Lab Test Questionnaire

Client Name: Project Name:

last revised: 12/7/16 Page: 1

Question Client Response

1. What is the purpose of your testing request? - Seeking to learn the general BMP

(Biomethane Potential Testing) of the a single or multiple feedstock/materials (please describe)

- Seeking to learn the BMP of a “recipe” of blended feedstock/materials (please describe)

- Seeking to learn overall total Biogas production of feedstock/material

- Seeking to learn all constituent gas fractions and at what intervals?

2. What lab testing protocols are you familiar with?

- BPC/AMPTS - ASTM - DIN - Gunaseelan - ISO

3. Are you seeking batch testing” for the BMP (cross-sectional) or “continuous” for the BMP (longitudinal) study preferred? Is this parameter understood?

4. Are you seeking to understand the final nutrient levels of the digestate – i.e. NPK,

5. Do you want ATA (Anaerobic Toxicity Assay; microbial inhibition?) testing?

6. Do you want SMA (Specific Methanogen Assay) testing of your inoculum?

Question Client Response

7. What is the material (feedstock/substrate) you are desiring to test:

- Livestock (cattle, beef, dairy grow out facility, dairy flush, dairy scrape/dry lot, dairy mixed flush/scrape

- Horse racetrack (describe likelihood of drug contamination – lasix, antibiotics, etc.)

- Horse – Trail Horses - Poultry - Sheep/Other - Mixed livestock - Food Waste (pre-consumer, post-

consumer, industrial [please describe], mixed)

- Green Waste (source separated, grass, landscape, etc)

- MSW (green waste, other [please describe], bio-solids)

- Other material (please describe)

8. Do you expect the material to be: - High Solids/High Strength - High Solids/Low Strength - Low Solids/Low Strength - Low Solids/High Strength - Other/please describe

9. Are there any known contaminants? What are they?

10. Are there any known hazardous materials mixed in?

11. What is the known or expected pH?

12. What is the known or expected EC (Electrical Conductivity)?

13. Inoculum Source: Operating AD, Local WWTP, Dairy Manure, Other (please describe)

14. Will the inoculum be customer supplied or lab supplied?

15. Anticipated final digester type - CSTR - Plug Flow - Mixed Plug Flow/CSTR - Lagoon - Dry Fermentation - UASB – Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket - SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor)

16. Digester Process Temperature - Mesophilic (20 and 45 °C / 68 and 113 °F) - Thermophilic (41 and 122 °C (106 and 252

°F) - Other

17. Desired Retention Time - 21 day - 28 Day - >28 Days (how many) - Other

18. Geographic location of digester

19. Volume/mass of anticipated materials

20. Pretreatment at production? In order to replicate at lab scale

- Grinding - Maceration - Size sorting - Pre-Hydrolyses - Pre-pasteurization

21. Sample Collection will be done by: - ADLTN/Team Biogas® - Customer - Is chain of custody required?

22. Client Reporting Requested - Standard – just numbers (ml of biogas of

biogas per g of substrate, ml of biomethane per g of substrate), will it be normalized data per Dry Matter (DM) or Organic Dry Matter (oDM) or wet matter

- Standard – numbers plus report, with analysis (charts, graphs, commentary from lab)

- Standard + Special – standard numbers, special calculation requests (example – convert ml of biomethane per g of substrate to ft3 of wet tons of material), full report

- Gas fractioning intervals? Real time or selected stages [via tedlar bags, then remote or GC later]

23. Interim reporting requirements - First Report: Date substrates received,

date user provided inoculum received, initial materials observations (COD/BOD, TS/VS, pH, temp, etc)

- Confirmation of length of test, date testing started, anticipated date of completion, anticipated date of draft report

24. Weekly Updates: Overall observation of test, biogas/biomethane produced from last report and total biogas/biomethane produced to date.

Note: All laboratories are qualified for this specialized testing, however but not all are “Certified” laboratories, if you require a “Certified” lab operation we must know in advance and often these require full matrix testing, which may be 144 sample set run. These can be very expensive.
