Talking About Actions That May or May Not Take Place

The subjunctive mood is used frequently in Spanish to express an action that is desired or hoped for but that is not necessarily real.

Los padres de Luis quieren que él pague sus gastos personales.

The sentence contains a dependent clause. The action expressed is this dependent clause is an action desired but not neccesarily real.

Los padres de Luis quieren que él pague sus gastos personales.

The action is dependent upon, and subordinate to the verb of the main clause “want.” What his parents want may or may not occur. This is why the verb in the dependent clause MUST BE in the subjunctive mood.

To form the present subjunctive drop the o ending of the first person singular of the present indicative.
