fourth year design studio:first semester:project 1 (adaptive reuse)

professor: goodman

THIS ADAPTIVE REUSE PROJECT TOOK PLACE IN DOWNTOWN SANDUSKY, OHIO AND THE GOAL WAS TO TAKE AN OLDER BUILDING AND REVITALIZE IT INTO SOMETHING THAT WILL BENEFIT THE DOWNTOWN AREA. EACH STUDENT WAS ALLOWED TO DESIGN WHATEVER THEY FELT THE DOWNTOWN NEEDED. BY RESEARCHING THE DEMOGRAPHICS, I FOUND THAT THERE ISN'T MUCH EMPHASIS ON EDUCATION. THERE ARE ONLY A FEW SCHOOLS AND NONE OF THEM ARE COLLEGES. UPON FURTHER RESEARCH, I FOUND THAT SOMETHING SANDUSKY STRUGGLES WITH IS GETTING PEOPLE TO STAY IN SANDUSKY WHICH COULD BE TRACED BACK TO EDUCATION. IF THERE AREN'T OPPORTUNITIES FOR EDUCATION, PEOPLE WILL LEAVE TO WHERE THERE IS OPPORTUNITY. tHEREFORE, I DESIGNED A MARINE BIOLOGY INSTITUTE. THIS WILL NOT ONLY CREATE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY, BUT ALSO JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR SANDUSKY.

The Hector Kilbourne Institute ofMarine Biology, to be located in the Engels and Krudwig Winery building at 220 East Water Street, in Sandusky, Ohio is an opportunity in itself. The intention of this facility is to establish a stronger sense of education in Sandusky. This will be done by providing opportunities to anyone in the community, regardless of age.

HKIMB also provides connections to the community through a system of docks and boardwalks. These docks will tie the facility to the streets, green spaces, and water fronts and extend even farther out to two isolated observatories in Lake Erie. By connecting the facility to areas around it, there are both educational and recreational opportunities for a stronger community

interaction.

professor: maurer

THE Re/D HOUSE WAS A NEW PROGRAM BROUGHT TO THE CURRICULUM OF THE ARCHITECTURE PROGRAM AT KENT STATE. HEADED BY PROFESSOR CHRIS MAURER, A HOUSE IN THE ST. CLAIR SUPERIOR DISTRICT WAS PURCHASED AND RE-DEISGNED BY A CLASS OF ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS WHICH I WAS A PART OF. WE SPENT A WHOLE SEMESTER WORKING WITH THE SCSDC (ST CLAIR SUPERIOR DEVELOPMENT CORP.) AND THE CUDC (CLEVELAND URBAN DESIGN COLLABORATIVE). WE CAME TO AN AGREEMENT ON THE FINAL DESIGN OF THE HOUSE AND BEGAN DOING THE FLIP THE SUMMER OF 2014. IT WAS CONVERTED FROM A TWO FAMILY HOUSE INTO A ONE BEDROOM LOFT. SO WE STARTED WITH A COMPLETE DEMO OF THE INTERIOR OF THE HOUSE. WE THEN STARTED TO PUT UP THE STUD WALLS AND CUT OUT THE OPENING IN THE SECOND FLOOR. LARGE OPENINGS WERE CUT OUT OF THE NORTH WALL FOR SLIDERS AND A DECK WAS BUILT TO ENHANCE THE ENTRANCE INTO THE HOUSE. ALONG THE WAY WE RECEIVED VOLUNTEER HELP FROM VIP RESTORATION THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS AND ALSO LEARNED A LOT FROM THEM. THIS WAS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO NOT ONLY LEARN ABOUT THE COMPLETE ARCHITECTURE PROCESS BUT ALSO TO LEARN THE PROCESS OF RENOVATING A HOUSE.

the first day consisted of demoing the garage that was added on to the house.

spent the first two weeks ripping off all the bead board, drywall, plaster, and lathe that was over all the walls.

view of the existing living space looking from the exisiting kitchen.

demo of the second floor was the same as the first floor. we had to remove bead board, drywall, plaster, and lathe. this is the space that would eventually become the master bedroom and closet.

this space was an existing bedroom. The floor was removed to create a loft space surrounded by an office and master bedroom.

partition wall between kitchen and living space was then removed.

the joists that were removed were set aside to be repurposed and the old hardwood floor that was removed was used to patch holes in the remaining floors and also set aside to be repurposed.

this is a view of the first floor and loft space from the stairs. all joists were removed and a full privacy railing was built with intentions of possibly putting the hardwood floors over the plywood.

view of the master bedroom and closet from the office. double height space is to the immediate right. master bedroom is on the right and closet is on the left. the only access to the bedroom is through the closet.

the outside landscape was broken up into different parts. instead of one large parking space, there is a defined space in the front with a planter box sepearting it from what is essentially a back patio. attached to the house is a two teir deck.

on the other side of the parking space is a small green space with sever-al planter boxes with one main box at the start of the lot. chunks of concrete that were left over from the existing drive were lined along the edge of the site.

all the windows were replaced and two large sliders were added on the north wall leading out to the deck. this is where we finished the class. professor maurer, the cudc, and the contractors are currently working on it.

second year design studio:first semester:food bank

professor: teismann

THE FOOD BANK PROJECT WAS A STUDIO WIDE PROJECT AND WE WERE TO DESIGN A FOODBANK IN AN AREA WE WERE ASSIGNED. EACH PROFESSOR GAVE THEIR CLASS A SPECIFIC SITE AND MINE WAS LOCATED ALONG FRANKLIN AVENUE IN KENT, OHIO. WE WERE GIVEN A SPECIFIC PROGRAM TO FOLLOW WHICH INCLUDED: CLASSROOMS, OFFICES, AN AUDITORIUM, AN EVENT SPACE, AN INDOOR FOOD MARKET, A CAFE, STORAGE, ETC. WE WERE ONLY ALLOWED AROUND 23,000 TO 25,000 SQUARE FEET TO WORK WITH AND COULD MAKE MINOR CHANGES TO THE PROGRAM IF NEEDED. MY PROJECT WAS THREE STORIES.

SOME MAIN FEATURES OF MY DESIGN WERE:

• PROGRAM WAS CENTERED AROUND THE INDOOR FOOD MARKET

• LOADING DOCK LOCATED ON OPPOSITE SIDE OF ENTRANCE

• THIRD FLOOR (EVENT SPACE) WAS AN ALL GLASS SPACE THAT CANTILEVERED OVER THE AUDITORIUM SPACE LOCATED ON THE SECOND FLOOR.

THE KENT SHORES FOOD BANK IS A CENTRALIZED BUILDING FLANKED BY TWO ADDITIONAL SUPPLEMENTAL BUILDINGS. TO EXECUTE THE CENTRALITY OF THE FOOD BANK, THE INDOOR MARKET IS LOCATED IN THE HEART OF THE CENTRAL BUILDING. FOOD COMES FROM THE EARTH, THUS THE BUILDING IS ALSO MADE OF MATERIAL THAT COMES FROM THE EARTH, STUCCO. THESE FACTORS ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO THE FORMAL DESIGN OF THE BUILDING: THE ANGLE, THE CENTRALITY, THE LOCATION THAT THE FRONT ENTRANCE FACES, MATERIAL, ETC. ALSO, EVERY WINDOW IS EITHER A CLERESTORY OR A STOREFRONT WHICH ALLOWS FOR THE MAXIMUM VIEWING TO THE OUTSIDE. LIGHT IS FILTERED IN FROM ALL SIDES WHICH CREATES A NATURALLY LIT SETTING.

first year design studio (summer studio):first semester:j-2 house

professor: stauffer

THE J-2 HOUSE IS A HOUSE THAT MY PROFESSOR WAS WORKING ON AT THE TIME OF THE ASSIGNMENT. HE GAVE US EACH A PACKET OF DRAWINGS AND WE HAD TO RECREATE THE DRAWINGS, ONLY AT A DIFFERENT SCALE. THIS WAS THE FIRST LEARNING ACTIVITY WE HAD IN A SENSE OF ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS. WE STARTED WITH THE FLOOR PLANS, THEN WORKED ON THE ELEVATIONS, AND ENDED WITH THE SECTIONS. THIS TAUGHT ME A LOT ON DRAWING TECHNIQUE AND ALSO ARCHITECTURE IN ITSELF.

first year design studio (summer studio):first semester:shadow box perspective

professor: stauffer

THIS WAS ONE OF THE ASSIGNMENTS FOR SUMMER STUDIO. WE WERE GIVEN A MODEL AND HAD TO DRAW A TOP VIEW AND AN ELEVATIONI VEW IN ORDER TO DRAW THE PERSPECTIVE. WE THEN HAD TO CALCULATE THE SHADOWS AND DRAW THEM BASED ON WHAT THE PROFESSOR SAID. THE LAST PART OF THIS ASSIGNMENT WAS TO SHADE IN THE SHADOWS USING HATCHING. THIS PROJECT WAS MORE FOR THE DRAWING ASPECT THAN THE ARCHITECTURE ASPECT BUT A LOT WAS STILL LEARNED FROM IT.
