Remember how you felt the day you shot your best round of golf, reeled in that big fish, scored the winning TD or rolled that 230 game? What about the powerful emotions that course through your body when your child drives in the winning run? How much pride wells up when you turn to other fans and tell them that your niece, nephew or grandchild just scored their first goal?

at the age of 5, willie Mays was playing catch with his father.

Those are lifetime memories, and memories are best when shared with others. That’s what Kenosha Sports Network (KSN) is all about…capturing those feelings, sparking those emotions and sharing that exhilaration with family members, friends and neighbors.

Joe Montana started playing organized youth football at the age of 8.

Now, KSN is expanding its reach. On your screen is the first edition of a groundbreaking publication that will forever change the face of community sports. Kenosha Sports Network @Play is the exclusive digital magazine for community sports in the Kenosha area.

venus and serena williams began playing tennis at the age of 5.

This free e-mag will deliver timely community sports news, important announcements, essential events, comprehensive standings, player profiles, photos and much more to your computer or mobile device every week.

wayne gretzky began skating on his backyard ice rink at the age of 3.

Producing this revolutionary publication is Kenosha-based Community Sports Desk, a sports software and service company. Like you, we understand the deep emotions associated with dramatic moments on the fields, courts and rinks, and we want to help you preserve them. CSD has one main goal in mind with this e-mag: to bring together a group of people who are passionate about playing, coaching, watching and sharing information about community sports.

Danica Patrick began driving go-karts competitively at the age of 10.

OK, so what’s up with the “subliminal” messages in italics? The point is that great athletes can trace their love for sports, their involvement in community sports, and their sports connections with family members to an early age.

Of course, not every kid who starts playing sports early will grow up to be a superstar. But the 40 million-plus American kids who participate in youth sports – plus the 25-year-old beach volleyball player, the 45-year-old horseshoe pitcher and the 65-year-old bocce player – all have an opportunity to create memories for themselves and their families that will last forever.

You are already excited about community sports. Kenosha Sports Network @Play gives you a new platform on which to share that enthusiasm with an entire community. We provide the vehicle…all you have to do is drive it!

Kenosha Cyclones: 10 years of success

In 10 years of existence, the Kenosha Cyclones have garnered enough hardware to saturate even the most corpulent trophy case. Take, for example, their outing to the ASA Class A State Tourna-ment in Watertown last month. The Cyclones entered four of their seven teams and all four returned to Kenosha with a state champion-ship in tow.

The local softball club’s teams include 12U Blue, 12U Green, 14U Blue, 14U Green, 16U Blue, 16U Green and an 18U squad. The Green teams are generally less experienced and play in five or six tournaments per year, while the Blue are at a higher level and look to compete on a national platform.

The 14U Blue and 18U team went undefeated in winning state championships, each with a perfect 7-0 mark. The 12U Blue and 16U Blue were 8-1 and 6-1, respectively, in capturing a crown.

Most Players from KenoshaPlayers on Blue squad rosters

come from Kenosha as well as surrounding areas. Players from as far outside the area as Franklin and Mundelein, Ill., are also in the club. Players on Green teams rosters are predominately from Kenosha.

“We are very much community based and the success of our club

has been a community-wide effort,” said John Ruffolo, president of the Kenosha Cyclones. “The communi-ty has been great to us. We’ve really been embraced.”

Ruffolo said that maintaining a community-based focus can be a challenge. In order to compete at the national level with the Blue teams, it is necessary to acquire players from outside Kenosha.

“We have maintained that balance from being community based and being competitive,” said Ruffolo. “The Green teams are for everyone to develop and not just be put on a roster. There are a lot of multi-sport athletes in Kenosha and softball is just one of their sports and that’s understood. That’s why we have two levels. We have

something for everyone interested in the game.”

Despite the fact that there is a gap in competitive levels, the Cyclones do not necessarily see their teams as separate entities. Ruffolo credits Cyclones Vice Presi-dent Amanda Pollitt with keeping everyone on the same side.

high praise for Pollitt“She has done an outstanding

job of creating a program-wide mentality and building a culture of mentorship from our older players to our younger players,” said Ruffolo. “It’s a family from 12U to 18U and Amanda’s efforts have added to our success.”

Blue teams travel as far away as St. Louis and Indianapolis to

compete in tournaments. With travel comes expense. That’s where the community comes in. More than 100 groups aid the cause of the Cyclones. Many of the players and their parents solicit sponsorships, allowing the teams to play at an elite level, which for some could be parlayed into a college scholarship. The Cyclones website (www.kenoshacyclones.org) lists a myriad of former Cyclones who have gone on to play collegiately.

Year ‘round dedicationIt’s definitely not picnic softball

for Cyclone players. The nearly 100 girls in the program train year ‘round through indoor winter practices, summer league games and tournaments. Kenosha Cyclone teams are members of the Amateur Softball Association Junior Olympic program, as well as other national

softball associations. Most Cyclone teams compete in the Metro Milwaukee Fastpitch League in addition to their tournament schedules.

Over 20 unpaid coaches and board members donate their time to cultivate the area’s young softball talent.

The original goal of the program, back in 2002, was to increase the number of girls from Kenosha who

play fast pitch softball. Back in that inaugural year, there was only one start-up team, a 12U squad. Fast forward 10 years to when four teams win state championships.

“I’ve been involved in club softball for over 15 years,” said Ruffolo. “Winning four state cham-pionships has never happened before.”

Don’t bet against it happening again in the near future.
