    TARKETT ACADEMY

    PROFESSIONAL WORK

  • KRSTO RADOVANOVI / ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO / 07

Tarkett Academy is an exhibition and educational space in the production complex Tarkett in Backa Palanka and was developed as revitalization of an old industrial building. The mission of the Academy is developing and improvement of technique of Tarkett flooring as well as improving knowledge of Tarkett products. This area provides clients, architects and designers with support and assistance in finding the best solution for flooring in a variety of projects, not only in its content and equipment, but also the way the entire facility was established.

The main challenge in designing the Academy was the introduction of new features into an existing industrial building space. The aim was to preserve the industrial character of the building, and to fit the new functions into the existing space with a series of spatial interven-

tions. External architecture is dominated by membrane made of perforated metal sheet which, in combination with large glazed surfaces, creates dynamic effects of shifting of light and shadow. In contrast to the reduced exterior, the interior is much more complex and is divided into two main parts: the showroom and the academy. The first area is an open, fluid space (space within a space) with a number of smaller units for displaying products and meeting with clients. This space is designed without strict physical barriers and spatial areas are highlighted as islands in the floor, which also show the design options of floor covering. The second part is more closed and it consists of a conference room, office space and training boxes for floor installers. Such concept of space is adjust-ed to a complex program, with a high level of flexibility and transformability.

The project of Education Center Patent Co was designed to meet the clients needs for space for training and accomodation of students (course participants). The building is located within the industrial complex in Crvenka, Serbia and will represent a new companys headquarters.

  • 14 PROFESSIONAL WORK

  • KRSTO RADOVANOVI / ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO / 15

The brief from the client was to design a facility which would accommodate various functions: education, ad-ministration, hospitality (hostel and restaurant), as well as the entrance lobby, which connects all the spaces. The primary function of the facility is to maintain cours-es, where trainees could become acquainted with the work of the company. In addition to the auditorium for theoretical classes and conferences, facility also con-tains an expo hall, where the course participants and visitors of the company may be familiar with the latest equipment for the production of animal feed and feed additives. Apart from the educational, complex also contains accommodation part (hostel) with living room, kitchen and inner courtyard, thus allowing longer stays of the trainees, with all necessary features.

This functional division affected the architectural design of the building: the complex is composed of five units, mutually physically connected but formally clearly de-fined. Each functional unit is one lamella (house), and their formation and spatial distribution was created as a contemporary interpretation of a traditional Vojvodina farm. Jagged form of the object is obtained by shearing of the spatial elements, thus allowing the creation of different interspaces and the integration of the building with the environment, as well as opening various per-spectives. In the nearby there is a forested area with a corrals for horses, and an artificial lake is planned to be built. All this affected the orientation of the building and its opening to the surrounding area.

  • 16

The building fits into the local context also by apply-ing traditional local materials, such as bricks and roof tiles. On the other hand, large glass surfaces with steel elements meet the functional and aesthetic needs of modern office and educational space. The faade is divided into two parts: the ground floor (dark brick) and

second floor (white brick). All the windows and doors are accented with wooden frame elements. The building is designed to meet all the criteria of ener-gy efficiency. Also, the arrangement of single units in a row allows the phased construction, which was one of the demands of the client.

The main challenge in designing this space was re-appropriation of one function into another. Originally designed as a tailors workshop, the space underwent functional changes after the arrival of new investors, and was converted into an office.Special attention in designing the interior is dedicated to keeping and maintaining the existing values, such as natural light-ing. Also, the integrity of the main room was has been retained, with the addition of glass partitions, which makes the physi-cal and acoustic barrier, without distortion of spatial continuity.

Young artists, architects or designers need a multi-pur-pose space that will be appropriate to live and work. These requirements were a major design challenge in designing the apartment for two architects housed in the old part of Novi Sad, in the area Podbare. The building dates from the first half of the 20th century, as evidenced by its internal and external architecture.

The interior of apartment contains a motif of apart-ment in the apartment where the entrance space is organized as a studio for work, while the other part is designed as a room apartment with all necessary ele-ments for life. The biggest challenge was to create two separate spaces in order to avoid the interference of functions, while not disturbing the existing geometry of the apartment.

The concept of the exhibition pavilion (stand) is based on the Knauf motto: from the family business to the family of businesses. The geometry of the building is in the shape of the house as a symbol of a family and gathering under the same roof. A stand occupies the central part, which is also both the exhibition space and a table for the guests, so that all the visitors are gathered around the same table thereby becoming part of the Knauf family.

The exterior of the building is geometrically reduced, enabling integration into a variety of venues; distinctive red line on the canopy is located above the slender pillars, which are drawn into the interior, making the impression of floating. In contrast to reduced exterior, the interior is playful and informal, symbolizing entrance into a new world - the world of Costa Coffee. Reflective elements are placed at different angles and allow reflection of the urban environment. The city and the environment are intertwined, making a unique ambience.

In the case of natural disasters, one of the biggest challenges is to accomodate a large number of displaced people in temporary facilities. In such drastic circumstances, SOS Panel provides the possibility to quickly adapt the space and make the most use of it in the new situation, as well as to establish better health standards and accomodation conditions. The panels are made and designed in a way that makes them extremly easy to store, set up and adjust to the space, and are made only of recycled materials.

In addition to this solutions indispensable role in case of flood, landslide, fire or humanitarian crisis, it also reduces the detrimental impact of waste, primarily discarded paper, on the environment and saves space in landfills. The social aspect is particularly important, as it is essential for the people who find themselves in such a situation to share their experience and new information with fellow citizens and offer each other comfort and encouragement.

The project Klupa_1000cm (Bench_1000cm) was devel-oped as part of research on the impact of architectural installations, such as micro-urban interventions in the public space and public space revival by creating bench-marks as points of socialization. It is an experimental spatial installation / street furniture primarily intended for open public spaces as a utilitarian object, but also as a specific spatial benchmark that visually dominates the space and calls for gathering.

Form of the object is achieved by computer model-ing which is then translated into a physical form. The structure is made of wooden slats, it is interchangeably full and empty which, combined with internal lighting, provides interesting light effects. Length of the structure is 10m, but it is possible to expand it unlimitedly or even shorten it in accordance with the requirements and size of the space.

deCODE is an experimental piece of furniture, between spatial installation and utilitarian object. By redefining the traditional concept of the bench and giving it new layers of meaning, the resulting spatial structure in ad-dition to physical dimensions also gets ambient, intangible value, enlivens the space and creates it, gives it a visual identity and character.Design is based on a process, constantly changing and moving, and less on the final shape, so the resulting form is to a certain extent incomplete and changeable. With different layouts of the elements and changing the length of the structure, it is possible to obtain different forms, applicable to different areas.

NS2051 is a project made in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina in Novi Sad, as part of the exhibition Ideology and ideals - the study of architecture 20th attachments century in Vojvodina , which was held on October 2010. The project was devel-oped within the part of the exhibition titled Habitat, in which they presented a utopian vision of Novi Sad in the 21 century.

The aim of the project NS2051 is to explore develop-ment possibilities of Novi Sad in the first half of 21st century, when large increase of population and expan-sion of physical structure are expected, and solution of this problem in the current urban planning practice is not on the horizon. In project were explored urban, architectural, social, ecological, political and economical factors that influence development of the city, transfor-mation of the city, and its expansion and development of the periphery and surrounding villages.

In addition to being a place for learning and development of an individual, an education center also represents a place of integration into a society; therefore, it is needed to redefine the traditional concept of education and the conception of the facility in accordance with the modern understanding of the term and the concept of lifelong learning. Instead of the closed facility (box-es) which is divided into different rooms, an open structure is proposed in which the traditional division of space by walls is minimal. In this way we obtain a current area in which a variety of functions in the form of islands are placed. Such an area enables a high level of social interaction, cohesion and unity, instead of separation.

Instead of continuous expansion of urban fabric, it isproposed to divide the city into urban grains - the units with a cer-tain degree of autonomy, which are interconnected. Each of these grains is divided into smaller sub-units - sustainable communities, and each individual community is composed of multi-functional center, made up of an education center, sports complex, spiritual center and park areas.

    A MODEL FOR SAVAMALA

  • KRSTO RADOVANOVI / ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO / 69

The project Model for Savamala is part of the Urban Incubator, a project of Excellence by Goethe-Institut in Belgrade. The aim of the project was to make a model that represents the current condition of Savamala: to visualise and make comprehensible what we are dealing with when talking about this area. To target the public awareness of it and (together with citizens,

visitors, developers, politicians and investors) try to illustrate the potential this area has. The project doesnt offer a conceptual design, but aims to create a transpar-ent area through physical 3D models, display information related to the historical, sociological, economic and political realities.
