As part of ‘Amrita Alumni Talk Series’, a talk by
four of our Alumni of 2005-2009 batch was organized on
9th February 2016. Approximately 200 B.Tech. students
attended the talk and the session went on for nearly two
hours.
The Alumni team members were:
Mr. Sandesh - Manager, MTR Foods, Bengaluru
Mr. Nikhil Das - IT Security Consultant, Dubai
Mr. Sriram - Consultant company for Airbus, France

The session was very interactive and informative
as the Alumni shared their experiences in & after Amrita.
They encouraged the students to choose their career as per
their intuitions and focus on their growth in the field of
their interest.
The focus of the session was on:
How Alumni can help to bring internships/
projects for current students?
Opening own Start-ups and developing/
succeeding in it.
Help from Alumni on choosing graduate universi-
ties for higher education
Wide range of opportunities after engineering
Fields of passion/interest etc.
It was also decided to build an android app that
acts as an interface between the student community and the
Alumni for facilitating speedy response with regard to
career related queries from the alumni who have expertise
in it. The session was highly appreciated by the students as
the main focus was following one’s dreams and achieving
it. They wanted many more of such events/talks to be
organized from the passed out students.

The music frenzy on campus topped the charts as
‘Raaga’, the Music Club of ASE-B presented its flagship
event, ‘The Voice of Amrita’ from 15th to 22nd of February,
2016. The format of the event was revamped this year by
the Club, which endeavored to surpass the successes
attributed to its previous editions. Out of the 70
participants who walked in to mesmerize the jury with
their melodies, 15 of them proceeded to the next round
where they enthralled the audience and jury with myriad
emotions with their romantic and melancholic songs.
The grand finale witnessed breath-taking and
heart-warming renditions which tested the versatility of the
top 7 finalists. The first round of the finale was the
presentation of a song from the 1960’s to 1980’s. The
performance of the participants had the crowd applauding
in exultation. The second round comprised of music with
fast beats which had the audience swaying energetically.
Only four contestants entered the final ‘Challenge Round’
– Mr. Nikhil Kumaar (S8), Ms. Anjali Nair (S8), Mr. Ravi-
teja (S8) and Ms. Ramya Lakshmi (S2). The Top 4 amazed
the audience with their melodies showcasing their voice,
adeptness in singing and excellent choice of numbers.
Mr. Aditya Vikram, (S2-M.Tech.) was awarded the
People’s Choice Award based on aggregate audience votes
from the first two rounds at the finale and Ms. Ramya
Lakshmi, (S2 CSE) carried home the title of ‘The Voice of
Amrita’ for this year.
Yoga, Acupressure and Natural Therapy
(YANTRA) Foundation, a voluntary non-profit
organization, was founded by Prof. K. Ravindran in the
year 2010. Prof. Ravindran is an Acupressure Expert. The
main objective of YANTRA is to create awareness among
the masses about acupressure, yoga and all other natural
therapies. Since these therapies are of no cost or low cost
& 100% safe without any side effects, it means only
prevention, diagnosis & cure, YANTRA ensures this
wisdom reaches the very common man. YANTRA has
been conducting the acupressure and naturopathy
workshops with well equipped and trained faculty through-
out South India.
To create awareness about this amongst our
students and staff members, the School had organized a
talk by Prof. Ravindran on ‘Naturopathy and Acupressure’
on Saturday, 20th February 2016. Prof. Ravindran
highlighted on simple remedies for different health
problems.
At the end of the programme, our students and
staff members gained some insight about the various
factors that are involved in maintaining their own
‘Wellness’ through Acupressure, the interesting of which
is that the patient himself/herself can stimulate the pressure
points on his/her own body without any external help or
side effect.

‘Voice of Amrita’ ‘Wellness In Your Hands’
The students at ASE-B enthusiastically celebrated
‘Eco Week’ during 20th -28th of February, 2016. It was
organized by ‘Prakruti’ the Environment Club. The
objective of ‘Eco Week’ was to create a diversified
awareness about nature.
During this period, a visit to Thayimane Ashram -
a plantation field was organized, which enthralled many
students and nurtured the environmentalist in each one of
them. Followed by the Ashram visit, an event titled ‘No
Plastic Day’ was organized by the ‘Go Green’ initiators of
the campus. The event attracted students to create paper
bags out of waste paper which culminated in 270 paper
bags and biodegradable dustbins. The paper bags and
dustbins were distributed in the cafeteria and the stationery
store in the campus.
Considering the high consumption of energy and
its negative impact on the environment, ‘Earth Hour’ was
organized as the fourth event of the week, in which
electricity supply to the entire campus was cut off. As a
mark of a successful ‘Earth Hour’, paper lanterns were
released into the starry sky, increasing its opulence. Eco
Week arrived at its climax with the ‘Cleaning Campaign’
where students joined hands to make the campus trash free
and beautiful.
One of the most awaited celebratory weeks of
ASE-B was the ‘Science Week’ which was organized by
‘Aavishkara’ the Science Club, ‘Vyom’ the Astrophysics
Club and ‘Sankhya’ the Mathematics club. A plethora of
events ranging from Olympiad to Tech Exhibition were
conducted from 22nd to 26th of February 2016. The
exhibition was open to Amritians on all four days and it
garnered the attention of numerous students. Various
working models were displayed and each exhibit was
accompanied by a brief & fascinating description.
‘Olympiad’, the true test of knowledge on a large
scale was conducted on 23rd February, 2016. Being an
online test, it made the takers search for a secondary
thinking cap. It was a mind wrecking experience for the 42
students who registered for the test. The winners of
Olympiad were Mr. Boyana Ravi Teja (S6 ME), Mr. P.
Bharadwaj (S4 CSE) and Mr. P. Madhivani (S2 CSE). The
following day played host to a renowned guest speaker,
Dr Annapurni Subramani, Professor at the Indian Institute
of Astrophysics. Dr Subramani expounded on
ASTROSAT, which is India’s first space observatory
containing a conglomerate of Hubble SpaceTelescopes that
are used to discover and explain astronomical phenomena.
Science Week had surprisingly the most engaging
closing ceremonies in the campus. ‘Treasure Hunt’ was the
final leap into the week, which saw participation of 40
teams. Each clue led to another and the final clue involved
the application of the theory of graphs and solution of
equations. The entire campus appeared to be the movie-set
of Indiana Jones. The unity showed by each team was
incredible.

B organized a free ‘Diabetes and Eye check-up’ camp on
24th & 25th February 2016.
Due to the massive increase in diseases across the
globe, professionals suggest that everyone should take the
test and move towards ‘prevention is the best cure’
lifestyle. With the assistance of Apollo Hospital, sponsored
by Lifestyle, the camp had nearly 950 students and
members of staff having their blood tested. More than 500
people from the campus got their eyes checked by ‘The

Shivagange trek area is a popular site for rock
climbing in Karnataka state. The entire trail to the peak is
well marked and the presence of man-made steps makes
the trail suitable for beginners. The trek commenced from
Milestone-1 which was the base of the hills. The entire
crowd was divided into 10 groups and a group leader was
assigned to each group. The thrilled trekkers wearing a
white shirt bearing the proud logo of ‘Squad’ started
ascending and it took about an hour to reach Milestone-2.
Milestone-2 is a small primeval ‘mandab’ (rest house)
where breakfast was served to the trekkers.
Dr. D. Praveen (Faculty in the Department of
Physics) led the group
from the front and
Mr. M.E. Shashi Kumar
(Faculty in the Department
of ME) backed up at the
end. On their way to the
peak, the students paid
respect to the Nandi statue and on reaching the summit,
Mr Shashi Kumar addressed the gathering and dedicated
this trek to the brave soldiers at the Siachen who recently
lost their lives due to an avalanche. A 1-minute silence was
observed in their honor. The trek at the Shivagange hill
came to an end, which left the students in awe. It was an
exhilarating experience for the trekkers.

also allowed to go around the plant to get a good
understanding of the process & design of various shafts
and generators. The Varahi plant has 4 generators which
convert the mechanical impulse from the Pelton Wheel
Turbine to current and have 6 transmission lines to carry
the power to Mangalore and Shimoga districts in
Karnataka. The final destination of the industrial visit was
the Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant. This plant is located along
the banks of the river Kali in North Karnataka. The
students were taken to the administrative block where they
were shown a video depicting the history and the progress
of the plant since its inception. Today it generates up to
220 MW of power which is equally distributed to every
state in India. The students had a Q&A session, which was
very informative & effective.
On their return journey, students also visited
Murudeshwar beach and Sathodi waterfalls which added a
little fun and relaxation to the trip. On the whole, the
Industrial visit indeed fulfilled its purpose with the
students gaining valuable experience and knowledge.
