Galatians:Starting Over {Yet Again}

Relationships don't start this way:

Bringing flowers

Sending notes or texts

Flirting, smiling and eye contact

Dates and holding doorsMovies and dinnersTalking non-stop all night

Something changed…

No one enters The Faith:

- I don't feel like God loves me- I've screwed up too much

- If I could just start/stop- At least I'm not like those…

Fresh, new, real!

Eyes opened, heart changed

Joy, peace…I wanna share it! Gimme more!

So what changes?

I confronted Peter…

I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose

Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works

of the law or by hearing with faith?

"God won't accept you unless…?"- Judaizers

And follow lots of rulesAnd dress like everyone elseAnd be a clone…to please God

"You had all these experiencesWith God…

Was that in vain?"

When God gives us an experience of his love, his Spirit, his power and direction in our lives…

When God gives us an experience of his love, his Spirit, his power and direction in our lives…It should produce a desire to know this God even more

What they experiencedIs the validation of what

God's Word had promisedAnd Paul had preached

Instead:"Great!

Now do these thingsAnd God will accept you"

Mission Drift

Government agency started byEmployees who want to helpPeople in need…

All about keeping jobs, getting benefits and building

nice officesPeople aren't treated well…

"You had all these experiences with God. You have his Spirit. The goal is to know him more, not to gain the favor of Judaizers

Or to earn his love and grace"

The moment I make my Walk with God

About something more thanKnowing him and glorifying him

I lose the point of The Faith

Mission:Know Christ and

Glorify him

Drift:Do things to get blessingsTo gain the favor of menTo look good for others

To look down on everyone else

Destroys the simply joyOf knowing and being accepted

By the God of the universe

Based on the cross of Christ

The answer is The Gospel(Not just for salvation)CreationFallRedemptionRestoration

There's something I need:

- Distract from it

- Intellectualize it

The Gospel saysIt's a need for RedemptionAnd Restoration

Not just salvation

I'm angry and bitter

- Try harder to be at peace- Seek alternative paths- Medicate it- Ignore. Or embrace it

Doesn't solve a thing

Gospel:What do I not have

That I really think I need?

Do I believe Jesus is enoughWhen people fail me?

RedemptionRestoration

The Gospel is for all of life:

- Overspending

The Gospel is for all of life:

- Addiction

The Gospel is for all of life:

- Self-centeredness

The Gospel is for all of life:

- Being nice & moral to be liked

The Gospel is for all of life:

Adding rules to the FaithAnd judging people by them- the Legalists and Judaizers

Everything else isTrying to meet a need Jesus has already met

When Jesus aloneSolves the equation

Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles

among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing

with faith…Present Tense

Judaizers: "God won't accept you unless

You follow Jewish Law

Listen to us! Abraham and Moses are our Fathers"

…just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”?

Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of

Abraham

Not the Judaizers

And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed”

Blessed:"Not counting men's trespasses against them"- 2 Cor. 5Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness

Us: By grace through Faith because Christ died

Abraham: By grace through Faith in God

BECAUSE Christ would die

So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith

So how was he righteous?

Mission Drift:- The goal is to know GodAnd honor him, glorify him

- The goal is to do things: Makes me righteous & God blesses

So the point is made:You don't have to do things

To be accepted by God

And then…

For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them”

We're not underThe Mosaic Law

In any wayIf we're in Christ

By calling this covenant "new," he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear- Hebrews 8:13

Mosaic Law: Blessing and CursingTied to Land for Israelites

All who rely on works of the law613…1 Mistake= curse

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a

curse for us- for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is

hanged on a tree…”

…so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith

Christ became a curse for usSo that in him we might inherit

The blessing of righteousnessAnd the Presence of his Spirit

Judaizers were sayingJesus isn't enough

The goal is to do for GodIn order to get from God

In this Faith, we finishExactly how we started:

By grace through faith:Knowing and glorifying ChristBecause he is enough

Relationship:Started with showing love

Because you wanted her to Know how much you loved her

Relationship Mission Drift:When it became about"Getting my needs met"

Or Comparison to a guy I knowIt went south…quickly

Gospel:Jesus is enough

And I'll serve the other personRegardless of what I get back

Because Jesus served me first

The Faith was new and freshI was forgiven and clean

Then I became guilty andContinued to fall into sinAnd it became dry and…

The Faith Mission Drift:

I have to stay forgiven and cleanBy doing things that win

God's love

The Gospel:

Jesus has done it allGod is pleased with his SonAnd I am in Christ by graceHe's pleased with me now

What do I needThat Jesus hasn't done

Or won't do as I follow him?

Am I trying to earn whatJesus has already given?
