THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

“Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens.”

Jimi Hendrix

FROM THE PRINCIPAL CLASS

The days are starting to get a little longer and the weather is certainly starting to feel warmer. It is suddenly the beginning of August and, as always, Koonung is a hive of activity. The team working towards the 50th celebrations are at the stage of counting down sleeps, and there is considerable excitement mounting as we approach the events planned for the weekend of 29th -31st of August. We would love to see each of you at some stage during this weekend. This week Mark Threadgold, Jane Thornton, James Fowler and Craig Canning are heading up to Mt Buller with 50 students for our annual Ski Camp. This event is always a highlight of the winter calendar and places on the camp are hotly contested among both staff and students. We wish the group a safe trip with cold nights and clear days and lots of powder snow. They will return late on Friday night after 4 days of skiing. Planning for the French trip to our sister school in Arras is now finalised. Mark Quinlan, Anna Buzzi and Kate Hindell will be departing on the 21st of September with 21 students for three weeks touring throughout France, including a home stay in Arras in the North of France. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to further develop their language skills with native speakers as well as the amazing cultural experience that visits such as this provide. The School production of URINETOWN closed on Saturday night after 8 amazing performances. There were some very tired but elated staff and performers after many months of planning and rehearsals. The commitment shown by both the staff and students to ensure that the performances were of the highest calibre is commendable. Congratulations once again to all involved and I look forward to hearing what will be on offer in 2015. In the classroom this term, it is a time for consolidation and building on skills. All students in Years 9, 10 and 11 will have 1 on 1 course counselling interviews before the final submission of subject selection forms. It is important that students listen to the advice given by the counsellors and their parents during this time and make careful and realistic decisions about their subject

choices. Many students make a commitment to improved study habits “next year”, however, we consistently stress the need to demonstrate these improved habits now! In this regard, the Student Reflections part of Compass is a great place for students to record their goals for the remainder of 2014, and develop strategies to achieve them. I encourage parents and students to look over last semester’s report and sit down together to complete this section on Compass. For Year 12 students, third term really is the “pointy end” of the year. There will be SACs in all subjects and balancing workload and other commitments will be paramount. Last week the Year 12s were privileged to have Bob Hillman, Chief Assessor in English, speak to them about preparing for the final English exam. He provided students with a vast array of strategies which will help to ensure success in English and many other subjects. Bob’s message to the students encouraged them to trust the advice provided by their teachers as they guide them towards the final exams. Many teachers will start providing students with past exam papers in the coming weeks; the timing of this will be dependent on things such as the structure and style of the final exam. For many subjects it is difficult to complete practice exams until all of the content is completed as they require integration of content from each area of the course. I look forward to seeing many of you at the 50th Anniversary Celebrations in August. Please mark the last weekend on your calendars.

COMMEMORATIVE PAVERS

As part of our 50th Anniversary Celebrations, individual commemorative pavers will be installed in a prominent position in the school grounds. You can have your name engraved into a paver as a lasting record of your connection to Koonung Secondary College. This is a rare opportunity to commemorate your time at Koonung in such a permanent way. This is the first time commemorative pavers have been offered to our community and it is unlikely to happen again in the near future. A paver can represent the whole family or individuals. Details are in the Order form. Print the form or alternatively please fill in the hard copy which has been sent home with your son/daughter and return to the school at your earliest convenience.

2014 PARENT OPINION SURVEY

Randomly selected families were recently posted the 2014 Parent Opinion Survey from the school. The survey is designed to take no more than 20 minutes to complete and your feedback and opinions play an important role in making our school the best it can possibly be. It is important that as many surveys as possible are completed and returned to the school. Should you require another survey, please contact the school.

JUNIOR GIRLS’ SQUASH STATE

CHAMPIONSHIP

Koonung was able to display our junior talents at the State Squash Championship on the 23rd of July at the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre. After our arrival and a quick warm-up session, it was straight into our first match against Melton SC. Tiffany Torounoglou was our number three seed and quickly got into the rhythm of the game making some winning shots. Our second seed was Mikala Burchell, who fought hard and further improved our confidence in a fast paced game. Our number one seed was Jenna Weingartner. Despite facing a strong opponent, she battled on and gave a solid performance and our best game score of the match.

The next team to be faced was Highvale SC. We were up against a team of mixed skill levels and experienced some thrilling close games. Mikala’s game saw the lead swap many times and had everyone on the edge of their seats to the very end. The final match was with McKinnon SC. Again some great squash shots and rallies were experienced from both teams. While the

grind of three matches in a row began to show on the energy levels, our girls fought on to the final point.

While we did not win the State Championship, Tiffany, Mikala and Jenna played with great determination and excellent sportsmanship. Other team coaches commented on the happy, smiling attitude of our team. Congratulations to our State Squash team on your effort and commitment.

SENIOR BOYS HOCKEY

Senior Boys Hockey – Playing in State Finals

Last Tuesday, I took the Senior Boys Hockey Team to

play in the Regional competition. Our first match was

against Mt Waverley Secondary College (MWSC) and

after a few minutes they penetrated our defence and

scored the first goal. It was not until late in the second

half that Koonung equalled the score to finish the

game off with a draw.

It was a tough match. After a quick rest we played

John Monash Science School, who put up a strong

fight. Koonung persisted with their attack and finished

with a score of 2 – 0. At the end of the pool rounds,

we were on even points with MWSC, so the result was

decided on penalty strokes. We reached the finals

with a score of 4 – 3.

We then played against Balwyn High School (BHS), a

team that won state the previous year and won their

pool easily. After changing a number of positions, the

start was not good for Koonung as BHS scored easily

within the first few minutes. The team persisted with

the game plan and was rewarded with a goal soon

after. Both teams attacked and defended extremely

well. Koonung scored their second goal late in the

second half and continued to hold off the late

comeback by BHS.

The final was an excellent match and the boys played

extremely well. The team consisted of: Robert DI RICO,

Will PHILIPP, Will BENNIE, Liam MORRIS, Luke ROWE,

Jake DOUGLASS, Matthew PONZA, Marcos KEMP,

Hamish PRIOR, Darcy CAREW, Rowan POLLOCK, Alistair

PAYNE, Roman KELBEL, Karl STAGG-EIDEM. Good luck

with the State Finals.

CASSE TEACH THE TEACHER

PROGRAM

Traditional school roles were redundant this week, with a group of CASSE students taking to the front of the class to teach the teachers. A number of students from all year levels showed initiative and leadership when they ran a staff meeting, discussing issues with the teachers that they had developed. Mutual respect, engagement, and understanding were some of the themes covered. The aim of the meeting was to bridge the gap between teachers and students and work together to further improve the teaching and learning culture at Koonung. Lots of teacher/student interactions took place, with both staff and students enjoying the time to play, work together, and discuss the concerns of the students. Information from this meeting will be looked at and discussed by our CASSE students to further improve what happens at Koonung. This event was a huge success and all students involved presented themselves with maturity, respect and were understanding of the teachers’ busy workloads. CASSE (Creating a Safe and Supportive Environment) is a special program running at the school that is focussed on empowering students with a voice, and helping assist young people from all year levels to develop their skills in empathy, understanding and acceptance. Part of the program has been to train the students to teach the teacher.

Congratulations to all students involved in making this meeting so fun and enriching.

TERM 3: WHAT’S ON IN THE LIBRARY

THIS TERM?

LUNCHTIME IN THE RESOURCE CENTRE After careful observation and monitoring by Staff over the course of Semester 1, and in consultation with the Principal Class, it was decided that the Library would be open at Lunchtime to students who wish to use its facilities for:

Quiet study time

Group activity study time

Social get together and

Non-computer game time.

In order to achieve this it was decided that there would be no notebooks in the Library at lunchtime. This was quite a radical shift but students have positively embraced the new guidelines and the Library at lunchtime now buzzes with laughter as students engage in playing Chess, Mancala, Upwords, Sea Battle, Connect 4, UNO and other card games. Other

students sit in groups in the Quiet Study Area discussing their work, still more sit in the Reading Lounge quietly reading whilst others sit around the tables simply chatting and enjoying each others’ company. If students wish to complete homework at school they are reminded that the MYC is open at lunchtime and the Library is open every morning at 8.15am and in the afternoon Monday to Thursday until 4.15pm. Students are also reminded that the Homework Club is on Wednesday after school in the Library with Mr Canning and Ms Symons.

COMPETITIONS Our Chess Tournament finished last week and currently there is a Name the Movie competition running in the Library. Come along and see whether

your knowledge of movies, past and present, can reward you with a chocolate. A Community Jigsaw is also underway – come and contribute to the big picture.

PRINCIPAL’S READING CHALLENGE This is our second year of the PRINCIPAL’S READING CHALLENGE at Koonung. All years 7 & 8 are part of this competition and year 9-12 students and Staff are invited to participate. Students are awarded 1 point for every 50 pages of a novel, biography, graphic novel or reference book that they read between June 9th and September 1st 2014. The competition runs on three levels, points are earned:

1. On an individual level, 2. On a form level and 3. For the student’s House.

Celebrations recognising achievements are held during Koonung’s Book Week September 8th-12th. VISITING AUTHOR James Phelan, YA Fiction author of the trilogy Alone and high action, adventure novels such as Fox Hunt and the new series Thirteen, will be visiting Koonung on Monday August 25th. He will be speaking to year 8 students and running a Writer’s Workshop. If any student is interested in joining the Writer’s Workshop on the day, they need to speak to their English teacher.

DEBATING REPORT

The C Grade debating team had a successful final round on Monday night. The result for the team was convincing, with Koonung winning the debate by 5 points. All the girls, Samantha Lee, Alexandra Douros and Anna McLean, debated really well and displayed a calm and confident manner. A special mention needs to go to Andrew Della Gatta, the C Grade Coach, who helped the girls prepare for the debate by running many preparation sessions and providing them with feedback. The team was faced with an interesting topic, taking the negative side of the issue, ‘That we should abolish the minimum wage’. Not only did they win the debate, but Alexandra Douros was also awarded best speaker. Well done and thank you to all the debaters that debated in the senior competition this year, Koonung is proud of you.

YEAR 12 BIOLOGY EXCURSION TO MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY

On the 18th of July all three of Koonung’s year 12 biology classes attended an excursion at the University of Melbourne. We visited the genetics department and participated in 2 practical activities. We investigated the inheritance of Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies) in particular the role of meiosis in gamete production and also investigated the effects of using DNA tools and conducting gene manipulation.

It was a great opportunity to see how the theory we are learning in class can be used in a lab environment and also to gain a glimpse of what life after high school could be like. Thanks to Mr Sheehan and Mrs Kyrkou for organising the day.
