It is World Day of Prayer on Friday - remember that we have opportunities every day topray....

Remember that we are back at Alert Level 2: Keep scanning COVID-19 tracer apps and usecontact sheets at church, stay at home (and get tested) if you feel unwell, be safe at church -communion in one kind only, follow your plan for safe distances in pews and use the sanitiserprovided.

Opportunities for daily prayer can be found on our Prayer Resources web page.

A Common PrayerSince the start of lockdown last year and with ongoinguncertainty around Alert Levels that this has brought, manyin the Diocese have been rediscovering the joy of prayer incommon...

From Tuesday to Saturday at 9 am and Tuesday to Friday at5 pm, people throughout the Diocese and beyond continueto gather for prayer, using the Daily Services from A NewZealand Prayer Book He Karakia Mihinare o Aotearoa. This

includes a cycle of prayers, readings for particular days, as well as the Psalms, Hebrew scriptures,New Testament readings and Gospel as set out in the lectionary. This rhythm of prayer takes thechurch through the seasons and cycles of the Christian year.

But more than this, these times have become a life-line for the regular and occasional participantswho gather to pray in this way. They have helped form a very different community to what was inplace a year ago, where people are able to care for each other, pray for our world and for matterscloser to hand, while being the "body of Christ" in a unique way.

This kind of common prayer is anything but ordinary. We have it in common, it is part of a usualpattern that can be part of our days, but often with extraordinary consequences.

Rev'd Claire Brown from Otago Penisular Parish (one regular participant) says:

What is important for me is the sense of Diocese: people from all over, joining inpraying - for the Church and for the world, and for those in particular need - with ourprayerful Bishop. It is a very precious time.

Judy Ringland-Stewart from Port Chalmers Parish writes:

The Diocesan Morning Prayer on zoom has been the best thing to come out of COVIDand the lockdown for me. I love the sense of connection and community which thoseof us have to each other who meet regularly or even occasionally. We are quite widelyspread throughout the Diocese.

There is no obligation and not much effort to be sitting in your own home and clickingonto the connection on the Diocese website.

I also love the format of the service - the canticles, the psalm, the readings andespecially the intercession prayers. It feels as though added strength is given to ourindividual prayers of concern when we voice them 5 times in a week with the group.

We prayed for my pregnant daughter in law and the safe arrival of the baby. Werejoiced at his birth. And then one of us was delighted to meet that baby by chance.

There is plenty of room for more people to zoom in and be part of this community.

Jo Stevens, who is part of the Dunstan Parish says:

What's been important to me about prayer by Zoom has been the sense of being ableto contribute by reading a canticle, psalm or Bible passage or by adding to thethanksgivings and intercessions. While someone is always leading the session we canall contribute fairly equally as you would in a house group rather than in a churchservice.

The Australian cartoonist Michael Leunig in one of his books about prayer talks of morning andevening prayer as like contemplating a tree, whose roots reach down below the surface. The treeseeks nourishment from the dark soil, the rich "broken down" matter of life, with its roots holding itfirmly to the earth. This enables the tree to grow, to swarm with life... but also withstand all thestorms and changes that inevitably come our way. He says:

"A person kneels to contemplate a tree and to reflect on the troubles and joys of life. The person imagines mornings and evenings in a great forest of prayers, swarmingand teeming with life.

The person is learning how to pray." *

Everyone is welcome to join in these times of prayer together and to add this into your own spiritualdiscipline... who knows who and what we may encounter in these "thin places" where God is to befound...

10 Steps to Less Waste in 10 MonthsOne of our Five Marks of Mission is to strive to safeguard theintegrity of creation and sustain and re-new the life of theearth. Here is Step 2 of the challenge for the month of March.

The following is a resource for churches and whanau. Please copy and share (freecopyright). More material and videos at: www.conversations.net.nz/rubbish-challenge.html.

Step 2) March: Measure

Bible verse

There is lots of counting in the Bible; think of some and look them up. Counting helps us take noticeof reality. Jesus invited people to be fully aware of what was going on: “blessed are your eyesbecause they see, and your ears because they hear.” (Matthew 13:16)

‘Big Idea’

To read a map you need to know where you are. Measure your rubbish to set a baseline. Then youcan set goals and measure progress.

Questions for reflection & discussion

Take a good hard look at the rubbish that we produce.Find out more about waste issues in your city.Do you think you personally put too much in the bin? What are you already trying to do to reduce land-fill waste?

Action Step for March

Measure your rubbish. Choose a period (2 or 4 weeks). Make up a chart for each type of rubbish.Notice what is in each bin – what was in the wrong bin?

Watch the 4-minute video at www.conversations.net.nz/rubbish-challenge.html

Prayer

Dear God, if only we could throw away everything we do not want. If only stuff woulddisappear, from our homes, from our relationships, from the planet like … (pause toname things you would like less of).Dear God: We confess to you our rubbish - the junk we buy, the rubbish things we sayand do. Forgive us, God of infinite grace. Have mercy on us. Amen.

Join the World Day of Prayer 2021All welcome to the service at St John's Roslyn Dunedin onFriday March 5. Morning tea at 10am, followed by the serviceat 10.30am.

A series of devastating tropical cyclones form the backdropto this year's World Day of Prayer. Through the resourcesthey prepared for this global event, Vanuatu women sharetheir faith in God’s love and address some of the manychallenges they face. Vanuatu is vulnerable to frequentdisasters like last year's Cyclone Harold, climate change, andnow with Covid-19, the significant loss of income due to thecollapse of tourism. Like women everywhere, they face theeveryday struggles of providing healthy food for theirfamilies, educating their children, and in a growing numberof cases finding employment or adequate livelihoods.

The service and accompanying Bible study include theirreflections on the story Jesus told about building houses. In a

land rocked by earthquake and cyclone, covered in volcanic ash, or threatened by rising seas, thedecision about where to build can be critical. “Building on a Strong Foundation” offers time forreflection and prayer.

“This service comes from the Pacific and explores familiar themes. It is an opportunity for us all toshare with ni-Vanuatu resident in Aotearoa and show our concern for the world we share,” saysPauline McKay, National President.

Artist Juliette Pita from Erromango island captures the prayer of the ni-Vanuatu in her painting

'Cyclone Pam II: 13th of March 2015'. The image is of a mother praying over her child, protectedfrom the large waves by a palm tree held firm by its strong roots. During the cyclone, artist JuliettePita took refuge in a container with her neighbours. When they opened the door the followingmorning everything had been destroyed except for her studio, a traditional hut made from palmtrees. Juliette says God answered their prayers and nature protected them from harm.

Offerings from the services will go to Christian World Service for a new food security programme ofthe Vanuatu Christian Council, the Bible Society of Vanuatu and the Interchurch Council for HospitalChaplaincy as well as costs.

For more information contact your local World Day of Prayer organising group, or Zella [email protected] or phone 03 302 8587.

The World Day of Prayer is a global movement of Christian women who come together in prayerand for action in more than 170 countries. Begun in the USA and Canada in the nineteenth century,it became a global movement in 1927. The first service in Aotearoa New Zealand was held inChristchurch in 1931.

All churches that remain open under level 2 to must have a COVID-19 Tracing Poster displayed, as wellas fill in contract tracing information for anyone attending services or groups.

This is an on-going situation where we need to plan carefully, follow guidance and not let our guardslip as it can only takes one contact to start a new cluster.

Summary of Level 2 for Faith Communities

Groups of up to 100 can meet including weddings and funerals - tangihanga. For all groupoccasions appropriate public health measures include physical distancing and contact tracingmeasures. We are being encouraged to wear a mask if out in public, this is already bemandatory on public transport (including taxis and ubers). Regular worship services cancontinue for Churches who have an approved Action Plan from the Bishop.

We need to follow best practice and remain calm and confident as we continue to put our trust inChrist and be agents of joy and reassurance in our communities.

Ours is the crucified God. Jesus himself cried out from the cross. We feel and lament. We hope andso reach out in solidarity and care. We seek not to explain or reason, but trust and work outtogether how our hope leads us towards life-giving responses.

We have policies, guidelines and resources that will help you adjust your activities under level 2.

Key information from the latest Level 2 guidance as it relates to Faith Communities is sumarisedbelow:

Alert Level 2 requires that you

Keep your distance from other people in public i.e. ideally 2 metres for those we don'tknow outside the home and 1 metre in places where we know others and contact tracingmeasures are in place. Wash and dry your hands. Wash often. Use soap. 20 seconds. Then dry. This kills the virusby bursting its protective bubble. Use a sanitiser if running water not immediatelyavailable. Wash and dry your hands: before eating or handling food; after using the toilet;after coughing, sneezing, blowing your nose or wiping children’s noses; after caring for sickpeople.Keep a note of where you have been and who you have seen, download and use theGovernment COVID-19 Tracing app, if you are able. Wear a face mask if you can in public and you must wear a mask if using publictransport. Have a look at current advice on the use of these.

Only controlled gatherings will be permitted (a maximum of up to 100 in total indoors oroutdoors) while maintaining public health hygiene, physical distancing and contact tracingrequirements. This is to reduce the risk when people who know each other well socialise orfellowship together.

Any small or larger church related groups or services must conform to public healthmeasures including washing hands, keeping surfaces clean, limiting numbers to allow safephysical distancing and noting attendees for contact tracing. An Action Plan for these mustbe signed off by the Bishop. Smaller gatherings/groups can still take place on-line with norestrictions.

More about Gathering and Events

You can have friends and family over to your home, but play it safe — keep surfaces clean, washyour hands, and keep the numbers low so you can practice safe distancing. Please note, homegroups or any other church related small group can meet in private homes if an Action Planaround this has been prepared and signed off (see also a Small Group checklist to help youprepare your plan).

Please note we are not recommending you to offer hospitality at Level 2. If you intend to, itmust be signed off in your Action Plan.

Additional conditions on gatherings:

Physical distancing and infection prevention and control requirements must be met.All gatherings should record attendees to ensure contact tracing can be conducted ifnecessary.Hospitality guidelines regarding alcohol consumption need to be strictly adhered to.You can’t participate in any gatherings or events if you have COVID-19 symptoms or if youneed to be in isolation/quarantine for any reason.

All gatherings outside of the home (indoors and outdoors) can have no more than 100attendees, excluding staff like waiters. Indoor gatherings should be seated if possible, andshould be approximately two hours long.
