About the Sankalp Forum

About Sankalp Forum: Launched in 2009, Sankalp Forum, an Intellecap initiative, recognizes & supports innovative, sustainable, high impact social enterprises. It builds an enabling ecosystem for early-stage social enterprises, channels impact investments, and engages over 11,000 stakeholders globally through collaborative year-round initiatives. It mobilizes a community of entrepreneurs, investors, enablers and policy-makers to encourage innovation, facilitate scalability, and drive consensus on matters that aid social enterprise development. Sankalp Forum also organizes an Annual Summit which is the largest social enterprise gathering in the world. The Summit convenes more than 1,000 social enterprise and impact investing practitioners from around the world to discuss, issues, trends and solutions that aid entrepreneur-led inclusive development. Sankalp Forum in Sub Saharan Africa: Thus far, Sankalp Forum has focused its enterprise support and ecosystem building efforts largely on India, with some activities in South and South East Asia. It sees a tremendous opportunity for expanding its efforts to Sub Saharan Africa to grow local high impact SME ecosystems; and also build a knowledge and partnerships corridor between India and Sub Saharan African countries. Between September 2013 and August 2014; Sankalp Forum plans to pilot a regional program in Africa in collaboration with local organizations. UKaid is a funding partner for this initiative and is seeding the pilot program by covering 50% of costs (USD 250,000).

Relevance of Sankalp Forum in Africa

There is increasing evidence that nations in the Global South stand to benefit from learning about and replicating successful sustainable development models created in the South and for the South. Intellecap’s vision is to build a knowledge transfer corridor between India and Sub Saharan Africa by:

Seeding interest and collaboration through a Sankalp Forum program in Sub Saharan Africa and then providing thought leadership and implementation support to accelerate this knowledge transfer

Working in close partnership with local organizations; and also building a local advisory practice based out of Sub Saharan Africa and led by local experts from the region.

Landscape Analysis

A track record of successful early stage investments is critical to accelerating an impact economy in

Africa. Such a track record can help to demonstrate the viability of investing in impact enterprises, as well

as create pipeline for impact-focused VC and PE funding. The lack of early stage investments is

especially a concern at this point in time as a 2013 JP Morgan-GIIN Survey of close to 100 impact

investors showed that 34% of respondents have an investment focus on Sub Saharan Africa – higher than

any other region in the world. In the same survey, respondents ranked “lack of investible opportunities

with track record” as the most critical constraint to scaling impact investing.

Further, only 20% of respondents felt that “many” of the opportunities they considered “passed initial

impact and financial screen” – a lower percentage than South Asia where 35% of respondents felt that

“many” enterprises were crossing this screen.

Three critical challenges that have been identified as barriers to the creation of a more cohesive inclusive

development ecosystem in Africa are:

Limited Support Available beyond Financial Capital: While

one part of the problem of early stage investing is that there

aren’t enough funders keen to take more risks and invest early,

the other part is that funders don’t find scalable business models

unless significant investments are made on sourcing and

enterprise capacity building which are not core business areas of

a fund. Hence, there is a need to make know-how and resources

around investment facilitation more available to intermediaries

and enterprises so they can achieve greater success in

catalyzing seed and early stage investments

Capital Mismatch: Despite large amounts of capital being

committed towards development in Africa, the enterprises are at

very early stages of their growth and do not have the appetite to

absorb this capital. There is a need to make the capital available

in instruments that are easily accessible and more suitable to the

enterprise growth stage. These include angel investments from

local and international investors, access to seed/VC stage

investments and improved debt lending facilities.

Highly Fragmented Ecosystem: Social enterprise ecosystem

exists in differing stages of evolution across the continent, creating a huge need to synthesize the

different activities and make available the most suitable support at the right time for entrepreneurs. Given

the diversity in the kind of support available across the continent, with South and East Africa being fairly

evolved, while West and North Africa in nascent stages, it calls for the creation of more easily accessible

shared networks and engagement platforms.

Based on Intellecap’s secondary and primary research, we have identified 3 key drivers

for a thriving social enterprise ecosystem:

1. Direct and indirect interventions to discover, build capacities

and showcase enterprises to investors

2. Collaborative efforts by intermediaries (consultants, investment

bankers, lawyers, incubators etc.) around shared challenges

3. Public/private sector building discourses and market

infrastructure building activities

Sankalp Forum, over the past 5 years played a critical role in catalyzing

the 3 drivers mentioned above to build an enabling ecosystem in India. It

now intends to draw extensively from its learnings to build a cohesive

ecosystem for entrepreneurship-led inclusive development in Africa.

Program Structure

SME Support - Direct and indirect interventions to discover, build capacities and showcase enterprises to investors Sankalp Forum will support emerging high-impact African SMEs through a rigorous Awards Program that sources scalable businesses across 5 high impact sectors; and showcases them to a group of funders ranging from philanthropic to equity to debt funders. Enterprises shortlisted for the Sankalp Awards for Africa will receive a broad range of capacity building support including business model validation and refinement; and training in capital raising. Convening - Public/private sector building discourses and market infrastructure building activities In addition to direct support to enterprises, Sankalp Forum creates an enabling ecosystem for them to thrive. It will annually convene Sankalp Africa Summit to bring together thought leaders, funders, entrepreneurs, intermediaries, corporations, industry experts, and policy makers from the region. Sankalp Forum’s first Africa Summit will be hosted in Nairobi, Kenya on 12th and 13th February, 2014. Knowledge and Thought Leadership - Collaborative efforts by intermediaries (consultants, investment bankers, lawyers, incubators etc.) around shared challenges The Sankalp platform will also create and disseminate knowledge and research to inform and influence entrepreneurship-led development. In the past, these have included sector landscape reports, and specific deep dives into talent and financing challenges faced by early stage, high impact SMEs.

Way Forward

As Intellecap looks to evolve and scale Sankalp Forum, it envisions a roadmap that helps to link impact investing and high impact SME hubs of the Global South to each other; and also with the Global North to drive a cohesive SME development agenda. This will include: South – South Knowledge Exchange: The Sankalp Summit is a convergence of knowledge, investment and dialogue geared towards building a better environment for high impact, pro-poor businesses. Over the years, the forum has successfully stimulated conversations and supported common action platforms that enable the Indian social enterprise industry. This year onwards Sankalp Forum, leveraging Intellecap and its partner network’s strengths will facilitate the creation of a knowledge corridor between the economies in the south beginning with Africa and expanding in Asia in 2015. Building Global Influence through Curated Discussions and Strategic Partnerships: Since its

inception, Sankalp has played a critical role in mainstreaming the impact investing agenda through its

network of 11000 global stakeholders. Going forward, Sankalp needs to be able to create mainstream

awareness and participation globally through strategic partnerships and carefully curated discourses that

include more significant global actors.

Research and Publications: Advisory work and thought leading research including landscape analyses, advocacy, and developing tools and other market infrastructure to drive SME development. E.g. in 2014 Intellecap in close consultation with the Office of the United Nations Envoy to Great Lakes Region will release an in-depth report on “Decentralized clean energy initiatives for the Great Lakes Region” that will be launched at Sankalp Africa Summit. This report will be and it will include recommendations towards the design and implementation of a decentralized clean energy initiative by the United Nations

The USD 2 trillion African economy has been growing faster than any other continent in the world. The region - is emerging as a hotbed of IT and mobile innovations that are catering to a global market. This change is increasingly being led by a growing young and entrepreneurial talent pool. At the same time, Africa also faces significant social, economic and political challenges in building a brighter future. Underlying these opportunities and challenges is a clear sense amongst business and development practitioners that "market-based approaches" have a critical role to play in driving inclusive development.

From slum sanitation to affordable housing to vocational training - innovative business models that seek to create both financial and social value are on the rise. These business models involve actors like SMEs, NGOs, large corporations and government bodies. The diverse initiators and leaders behind these innovations have lessons for the rest of the developing world. These innovations should be scaled as "common approaches to doing business" and not just as individual initiatives. To do this, a greater harmonization of voices between different organizations and individuals is required. Could a common action platform be created where questions of all types and unlikely collaborations come together to create fresh insights, new collaborations, and actions?

Transformational social change is complex, time-taking and not just related to the scalability of individual business models. Transformational change can mean a community in Kibera gets access to well-maintained private toilets and a migrant in Accra is able start a bank account and a young person in Bhisho is able to find a job after a school. This calls for systemic approaches - different actors along the "value chain" coming together and being incentivized to work together. As the world looks to Africa for insights on systemic approaches to inclusive development - can Africa also look to other developing economies of the Global South for answers? In the past decade, India has experienced a growth story similar to that of many emerging African economies. Funders, companies and intermediaries with a wealth of experience from India can add a powerful component to a discussion about inclusive development in Africa. In convening the inaugural Sankalp Africa Summit in Nairobi, Sankalp Forum aims to bring an ecosystem-focused lens to conversations but more importantly actions to drive inclusive development. It also aims to build bridges between two emerging giants of the Global South. Sankalp Forum launched in India in 2009 to bring together an entire ecosystem of companies and individuals who were driving inclusive growth. Built for the South by the South - over the past 5 years it has grown into one of the world's largest platforms geared towards building a better environment for high impact, pro-poor businesses. In finding another home in Nairobi, Sankalp, it will discover and bring scalable and high impact business models to the forefront, and connect them to enablers, mentors and crucial networks. It will also raise challenging and forward thinking questions about the future of what markets can do for inclusive growth; and bring together practitioners to drive common action. When we come together as an industry in Nairobi - ours will not be a one-time convening. Through our conversations we will seek to explore what an ecosystem-based approach to inclusive development in the region can look like. We will explore how we can create more collaboration, more talent, and better tools for decision making. Action will be our bottom line and the one critical aspect we will focus on is how to take our collective insights from talk to action.
