AIMS OF THE SCHOOL

A PARENT’S VIEW OF KNOCKBREDA

I was instantly struck by the warm and friendly atmosphere as soon as I walked through the door. From the pictures at the school entrance, the teachers and, most of all, the happy, smiley faces on the pupils. They genuinely looked happy to be there. KHS is an all ability school which encourages pupils to do their best. It is multi-cultural. KHS encourages positive behaviour. It is very hands-on and encourages parents to play an active role in their children’s education. It has wide range of after-school activities offering something for everyone.

PASTORAL CAREWe firmly believe all staff, teaching and non-teaching have a primary responsibility for Pastoral Care which is at its most effective when it is all pervasive, and fully integrated into our daily routines, curriculum and extra-curricular activities. Knockbreda High School has a strong pastoral ethos and our Child Protection Policy reflects this.

PASTORAL CARE

We realise young people need to: Key Stage 3 pupils participate in a comprehensive Personal Development Programme which includes Health and the Whole Person; Feelings and Emotions; Managing Influences and Making Decisions; Self Concept; Managing Change; Morals; Values and Beliefs; Learning about Learning; Safety and Managing Risk; Relationships and Sexuality and Drug Awareness. Through our Personal Development Programme we also teach pupils through our Learning For Life and Work programme which focuses on Local and Global Citizenship and Education for Employability as well as Personal Development.

As we have received a certificate for commitment to being a ‘Rights Respecting School’ we are particularly interested in pupil voice. Pupils take part in ‘Democracy Day’ and elections take place to be elected onto the Student Council

(i) grow in their self-esteem, confidence and independence of thought;

(ii) become understanding, sympathetic and sensitive to the needs of others;

(iii) develop the necessary skills to cope with their personal safety both within and outside school; and

(iv) meet with confidence the demands and challenges of adult life.

Consequently, the school aims to ensure:

(i) our Pastoral Care system creates a caring, supportive atmosphere based on mutual respect between all stakeholders; and

(ii) that our young people feel secure, know that they are valued as individuals, are encouraged in their learning, growth and social development in a healthy, safe environment.

The school is divided into Junior School - Years 8, 9 and 10 and Senior School - Years 11, 12, 13 and 14. Each Form Class has a Form Tutor with specific responsibility for the pupils in the class. The Head of Junior School, Mr A Galbraith and the Head of Senior School, Mr M Henry ensure Pastoral and Academic issues are dealt with in partnership with pupils, teachers and parents.

In addition, a New Life Counsellor is available to our young people on a weekly basis along with our School Counselling Co-ordinator.

The Key Stage 4 Personal Development Programme enables pupils to:-

• develop an understanding of how to maximise and sustain their own health and well-being;

• reflect on, and respond to, their developing concept of self, including managing emotions and reaction to on-going life experiences;

• recognise, assess and manage risk in a range of real-life contexts;

• develop their understanding of relationships and sexuality and the responsibilities of healthy relationships;

• develop an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of parenting; and

• develop further their competence as discerning consumers in preparation for independent living.

It may include the following:

Our reporting procedures have been developed to provide parent(s)/guardian(s) with detailed information about the progress of their children and the pupils themselves with an opportunity to comment on their own attainment and set Personal Targets. In addition to continuous classroom-based assessment, Common Assessment Tasks (CATs) are undertaken in November, February and May in order to inform teachers, parents and

pupils on attainment and progress. A detailed Annual Report is mailed to Parent(s)/Guardian(s) following whole school examinations and is supplemented by Progress Cards. All pupils are required to complete a Progress File as an on-going method of recording their success across the curriculum and in non-academic pursuits. Progress Files are distributed annually to all pupils at the end of Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.

DRUG EDUCATIONKnockbreda High School recognises that young people in today’s society are exposed to the risks associated with the drug culture which exists. Young people are challenged by the changing and sometimes conflicting values of society, which places demands on them to make informed and responsible choices.

For the purpose of the School’s Policy on Drug Education the term ‘drugs’ includes any substance which, when taken, has the effect of altering the way the body works or the way a person behaves, feels, sees or thinks.

The purpose of our Drug Education Programme, is to provide opportunities for our pupils to acquire knowledge, understanding and skills which enable them to consider the effects of drugs and other substances on themselves and on others. It enables them to make informed and responsible decisions about the use of such substances within the context of a healthy lifestyle.

The South Eastern Education and Library Board Chrysalis Programme is integrated into our Junior School Personal Development Programme with the School Health and Alcohol Harm Reduction Programme (SHAHRP) delivered in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. A life skills approach to drug prevention is essential and within the Personal Development Programme for years 8 – 12 all pupils are taught about raising self-esteem, self confidence and assertiveness to prepare them for making informed decisions about drug use, the main focus being on knowledge, social skills, attitudes and values. Detailed information regarding our policy and procedures is available on our website.

THE THOUGHTS OF A FORMER PUPIL . . .

“At the age of eleven, I decided that I should go to Knockbreda High School to complete the next five years of my education. I came from a small Primary School and transferred along with one other pupil from my school that I didn’t really know. I had always been reasonably shy and the thought of going to a big school scared me.

I settled into school life by joining the many clubs that the school offered such as the Drama Club, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Public Speaking. In senior school, I was voted on to the Student Council and finally became Head Girl. If someone had told me that this was possible when I first started Knockbreda, I would have laughed and said “that will never happen to me!”

The teachers are brilliant and always gave me help and advice when I needed it. Without them my experience at Knockbreda would have been completely different. They believed in me and what I was capable of achieving. With them I was able to achieve my full potential. Knockbreda opened many doors for me such as going on ski trips, visiting Alton Towers, raising money for charity and the opportunity to go on work experience. There were many laughs along the way and I have many happy memories of my time spent here.

µ [She] has found teachers very friendly and approachable.

I left Knockbreda in June 2012 having passed all my GCSEs. I achieved good grades to enable me to be accepted into a local grammar school to study four A levels. I have just filled in my forms to apply for university where I hope to study for a degree in Business Studies. Many of my friends who attended Knockbreda and transferred into Sixth Form Colleges are doing exactly the same thing.

Attending Knockbreda has enabled me to fulfil my dreams and it can help you fulfil yours. Whether it is leaving school and finding a job, continuing on at school or going elsewhere to study, all things are possible.”
