Preparation Getting Ready to Knit Your First Scarf!

Yarn (About two spools, depending on how long and thick you want your scarf)

Knitting Needles

Needle size depends on the thickness of your yarn, so there are many different sizes. To buy the right size:

Find the numbers on the back of your yarn package.

Find the size knitting needles that correlate to that number. The thicker the yarn, the bigger the needles.

Example: My yarn is thick, so the package suggested size 13 (9mm) needles.

Tips and Pointers Keep These in Mind as You Go!

Remember to keep the yarn tight in your hand as you go, but not too tight- remember, you need to be able to fit your needle through the stitches!

Pay attention to your knitting so that you don’t ‘drop a stitch’.

Don’t worry if you make a mistake- luckily, knitting is simply a series of slip knots, so any mistakes can be undone!

When taking a break from your project, always push the stitches down to the bottom of the needles so you don’t loose any stitches!

Casting On Starting Your Scarf!

Step One: Your First Two Stitches Drape the yarn over

your thumb and pointer finger, leaving a tail of about 2 ft. Gather the excess yarn with your other fingers.

Using one needle, pull the middle of the yarn down into an ‘upside down A’ shape.

Step Two: Your First Row Continue on in the

same pattern as you did for step one.

Do this for however wide you would like your scarf to be.

Example: I wanted a thicker scarf, so I knitted about 20 stitches for my first row.

Binding Off Finishing Your Scarf!

When your scarf is the length that suits you, begin a new row with two stitches as usual.

Take the first stitch of the row and pull it over the second stitch and off the needle.

Make another stitch as usual, and repeat these steps until the whole scarf is cast off of the needle, finishing the scarf with a knot.
