Orginally conceived as anorphanage- Alexandra Orphanage& non-Sectarian Home Societyback in 1894 & located at Pine& 7th. In 1972 Alexandra Housemoved to Vine & 7th, changed itsname to Kitsilano NeighbourhoodHouse & continues to serve the

    Westside of Vancouver.

    Childcare Programs

    Kitsilano Kids Club & Dunbar Kids Club are committed to providing qual-

    ity programs that encourage children to learn & explore their interests &

    ideas. Our staff work with families to establish programs & routines that

    meet the needs of all children & their families. We follow a child-oriented,

    play-based philosophy. This program is designed for children between

    the ages of 5 to 12 years old, attending one of the schools that we serv-

    ice. We also provide all day care during the Winter, Spring & Summer

    Breaks, at an additional cost. We currently have spaces available at our

    Community PreschoolOffsite at 4050 W. 4th Ave.

    We affer a child centered emergent curriculum. Play based with focused

    questions and activities, the program supports children in emotional,

    social, creative, cognitive & physical development. The teachers focus is

    to support the child in being self condent, expressive & co-operative- all

    of these build the base for cognitive learning. At the school we have ten

    centres that offer occasions for children to interact with others: blocks &

    building, art, music, story theatre, literacy, math, science, dramatic play,

    sensory & physical development. The children go outside everyday and

    eld trips which expand the childrens learning happen 2-3 times a year

    for each class.

    Morning Session: Monday, Wednesday & Friday 9:30am-12:00pm

    Afternoon Session: Monday, Wednesday & Friday 1:30pm-4:00pm

    Cost: $190.00/month + $50.00 registration fee + $10.00 annual member-

    ship. Sept & June fees to be paid at time of registration. Register for the

    September, 2008- June, 2009 session. Registration is a rst come rst

    served basis.

    knitting teddy bears to be shipped

    Building Welcoming and Inclusive Neighbourhoods

    Project

    The Building Welcoming and Inclusive Neighbourhoods (BWIN) project is

    a 3 year initiative that explores the role of Neighbourhood Houses in build-

    ing community capacity by encouraging inclusion and building on B.C.s

    cultural diversity.

    Kitsilano Neighbourhood House (KNH) is implementing a variety of capac-

    ity building initiatives through the BWIN project including the Seniors Asset

    Mapping Project (with diverse seniors consultations), an ongoing Welcom-

    ing Communities Steering Committee and Youth Volunteer Skills Training.

    Community participants and volunteers will be involved in projects such

    as: themed community potlucks, community events (Autumn Fair, Seniors

    Mapping Launch), creative projects (banner making, community gardens),

    cross generational programming and supporting Kits House inclusive policydevelopment.

    The Seniors Mapping Project is seeking your participation to...

    Develop an information guidebook for seniors and newcomers to the

    Westside

    Gain awareness of communities and services on the Westside

    Share your knowledge and learn about your community

    Participate in building a welcoming neighbourhood for all

    Interested seniors will participate in 3 workshops to identify community

    strengths, assets & resources using the Finding Home model, devel-

    oped by Jessie Sutherland from the Justice Institute of British Columbia.

    Information from the workshops will be compiled into an information

    Guide to the Westside for community members, seniors organizations &government agencies.

    Workshops are scheduled for October 2008.
