    2010-11 ENROLLMENT FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    1. What is KIPP Academy?KIPP Academy is a free public charter school that opened in 1995 and is now housed at three separate sites:KIPP Academy Elementary School serving 92 students in grades K, growing to K-4.KIPP Academy Middle School (grades 5-8) serving approximately 265 students in grades 5-8.KIPP Academy High School (as part of KIPP NYC College Prep High School) serving 160 students ingrade 9, growing to 9-12.

    In 2010-11, KIPP Academy Elementary School will serve approximately 185 Kindergarten and 1 st gradestudents.

    2. What sort of results have KIPP schools had? On the2008- 2009 New York State tests, 96% of KIPP Academy 8th graders scored at or above

    grade level in Math, as compared to 71% citywide and 60% in the district where KIPP Academy islocated. In English/Language Arts, 98% of 8th graders scored at or above grade level, ascompared to 57% citywide and 37 % in KIPP Academys host district.

    KIPP Academys student daily attendance rate is 98%. 86% of KIPP NYC alumni have matriculated to college.

    3. How old do you have to be to attend Kindergarten at KIPP Academy Elementary School?Children must be 5 years of age by December 31 st , 2010 to attend Kindergarten.

    4. What is the school schedule?By choosing to enroll at KIPP Academy Elementary School, families and students commit to an extendedschool day that lasts from 7:45 am to 4:00 pm on Monday through Friday. They also commit to attending aSaturday school program that lasts from 9:00 am to 11:00 am one Saturday a month, as well as a two and ahalf-week mandatory summer school session (8:00 am to 12:00 pm).

    5. What is the school calendar?In general, KIPP Academy Elementary s school calendar will follow the same schedule as the New York CityDepartment of Education during the 2010-2011 school year. As mentioned above, summer school ismandatory for all KIPP Academy Elementary School students.

    6. Do the students wear uniforms to school? Do I have to pay for the uniform shirts? Yes, all students are required to wear uniforms at KIPP Academy Elementary School. All students will beprovided with one KIPP Academy Elementary shirt free of charge. They will have the opportunity topurchase additional shirts over the summer and throughout the school year.

    7. How many students are in each classroom?There are twenty-three students in each classroom. Additionally, every Kindergarten and 1 st gradeclassroom is taught by two full time teachers.

    8. Do you take ELL (English Language Learner) or Special Education students?Yes!

    9. When is the first day of school?The first day of school for incoming Kindergarten and 1 st grade students will be in August 2010. While theexact dates of summer school have yet to be finalized, summer school hours will be from 8:00AM 2:00PMand summer school will last for two and half weeks. There is no Saturday School over the summer.

    10. Do you have free breakfast and lunch programs?Yes. Those students who are eligible for free or reduced lunch will receive breakfast and lunch as they did attheir previous school.

    11. Will KIPP Academy provide transportation for my child to get to and from the school?As with any public school, KIPP Academy Elementary School will provide eligible students with a fare orfull fare metrocard depending on how far they live from the school.

    ABOUT THE LOTTERY PROCESS1. Do you have to apply to get into KIPP Academy Elementary School?KIPP Academy Elementary School is a public school open to all New York students that are incomingKindergarten students. The only information needed to enter the KIPP Academy Elementary Schools lotteryis the students name and contact information. No test scores, grades, recommendations, or be havioralhistory will be taken into consideration. All applications must be received in person by April 8 at 5pm orpostmarked by April 8 th if submitted via mail.

    2. How does the lottery work? Do I have to attend the lottery? How will I find out if my child wasselected in the lottery? KIPP Academy Elementary School plans to enroll 92 incoming Kindergarten students annually, including

    siblings and returning students. If the number of families interested in attending the school exceeds thenumber of students we can serve, then we will conduct a lottery on April 13, 2010 at 5:30pm. All studentsentered into the lottery will have their names drawn by an independent auditor. Open slots will be filled inthe following order:1. Returning students2. Brothers/Sisters of Current KIPP Academy Students (must attend the same KIPP NYC school)3. Applicants Eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch and Residing in Community School District 74. Applicants Eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch and Not Residing in Community School District 75. Applicants Not Eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch and Residing in Community School District 76. Applicants Not Eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch and Not Residing in Community School District 7

    Upon submission of the application, applicants will have the opportunity to document their free and reducedlunch eligibility. Families do not need to be present at the lottery. Students will be contacted by phone todiscuss the expectations of the school in the order they were drawn until all open slots are filled. Familiesmay also call the school beginning April 15th to find out the number that they were assigned in the lottery.

    3. Do you accept applications 1st graders? While there will be a lottery for 1 st grade students, we anticipate that there will be few, if any, open seats.

    4. Can I enter my childs name in more than one KIPP NYC lottery? Yes. However, you will need to submit a separate application for each school. Each KIPP NYC school holds aseparate lottery and enrollment process.

    5. Can I enter the lottery more than once? No. Each child may only enter once. Any duplicate applications will be removed prior to the lottery.

    6. If I entered the lottery last year, do I need to enter again?Yes. There is a new lottery every year. Waitlists do not carry over from year to year.

    7. Where is the school and who can I contact with additional questions?The school is currently located at 928 Simpson Street, 3 rd floor in the Bronx. However, for the 2010-11school year, the school will move to its permanent location at the Mott Haven Complex located at thecorner of Concourse Village West and 156 th in the Bronx.
