GENERAL INFORMATION

LOCATION.

LaGrange is in Lenoir County, N. C, on the A. &. N.

C. R. R., 14 miles from Goldsboro. It isknown through-out the country as the town of schools and churches.

It is of easy access by rail and telegraph from all parts

of the country. Location is healthy, climate fine, edu-

cational advantages good, and cost small. State

Chemist in examination of water for Board of Health

says the following : "We have probably never examineda purer sample."

CHARACTER OK SCHOOL.

The Kinsey Seminary is a female boarding school.

It is maintained as a private enterprise. Every effort

will be used to make it thorough in the character of its

work. None but competent teachers are employed,

therefore, the very best work is done by them. We give

girls a thorough preparation for the higher classes of

colleges, or fit them for successful work as teachers.

The Kinsey Seminary is the only Female BoardingSchool in Eastern North Carolina in which girls are re-

quired to wear the prescribed uniform of the School.

The School is strictly non-sectarian. Our patrons are

representatives of almost all the religious denomina-

tions, and our teachers are selected on the ground of

competency regardless of church relations, though,

other things being equal, we try to have as many de-

nominations of protestant Christians represented as wecan.

DESIGN OK THE SCHOOL.

It is the design of the Principal to meet a recognized

want in some places, and one fast gaining ground in

others, of a school in which young ladies are taught

subjects, not books. It will be his constant aim to teach

them in such a way that when they leave the KinseySeminary, they will knoAv some things well. If they de-

sire to attend college, they will be prepared when they

go to enter college classes. It is intended to employand retain only those teachers, who know the difference

between theory and practice, teaching and hearing a

recitation.

ADVANTAGES.

Parents cannot over-estimate the advantage of board-

ing pupils in the Schoon They receive constant atten-

tion, are not interrupted in their work, are under res-

traint of regulations conducive to good habits, and re-

ceive instruction in many things not offered to daypupils. Their improvement in mind and manners is so

much greater that the Principal reserves the right to

refuse to receive those from a distance as day scholars

whose reasons for boarding in town are not satisfactory

to him.

UNIFORM.

After four years experience we have found the plan of

uniforming the girls perfectly satisfactory to the stu-

dents and patrons, and it has elicited the admiration of

the public. It obviates the difficulty of invidious dis-

tinction in dress, it saves expense, it saves time, it saves

thought and reserves it for other and higher uses. Theuniforms are made of gray, woolen goods and we will

have a dress-maker here for that purpose as well as to

Page 16: Kinsey Seminary Catalogancestraltrackers.net/nc/lenoir/kinsey-seminary... · 2015-11-05 · CATALOGUE ^ClNS^ llMttlilMHAffif LaGrange,N.C,-FORTHE-YearEndingJune5th,1890. GOLDSBORO,N.C

teach all young- ladies who wish to know it, how to cut

and fit a dress by measure. In preparing a- young la.dy's

wardrobe for Kinsey Seminary, it will not be necessary

to furnish an extra dress to be worn on special occa-

sions. The uniform supplies this need and is wornwhenever the pupil leaves the school for church or in

any school capacity. In leaving home all that will be

needed in the way of wearing apparel, will be a supply

of good, neat clothing for every day use in the school-

rooms. Immediately after arrival each girl must pro-

vide herself with uniform and hat, both of which wefurnish at actual cost.

In addition to the above uniform, we require each girl

to have a plain, white dress to be worn during the

closing exercises. To avoid all unnecessary expense andtrouble to parents in getting dresses fitted, made andsent to their daughters, as well as to insure uniformity

in these white dresses, Ave will have the goods on handand have them made here.

DISCIPLINE.

The discipline is parental but firm. We employ nonebut female teachers, who, by the advice of the Principal

and Lady Principal, maintain authority and enforce all

needful requirements. In the management of obstinate

pupils appeals are made to their reason, their affection

and lady-like sense of propriety. Boarders are consid-

ered members of the family, treated as ladies and are

expected to act as such. Pupils committed to our care

will be watched over and attended in health or in sick-

ness, in school or out of school, with the same careful

solicitude bestowed upon our own daughters. We use

discipline as a* means to an end. Our rules are few andsimple, such as experience has shown necessary to makeinstruction thorough and develop the mind and char-

acter of our pupils.

ADMISSION OK PUPILS.

Pupils will be received at any time during the session

and will be charged at regular specified rates from date

of entrance. It is very essential to the progress of pu-

pils that they be present promptly on the day of open-

ing. No one will be received for a shorter period than

the entire session, or the remaining portion thereof at

the time of entrance. Precaution will be used to pre-

vent the admission of any one whose example and in-

fluence might prove injurious to others. No pupil whois found to exert an evil influence in the school, who de-

rives no benefit herself and whose example is injurious,

will be retained.

i

PREPARATORY DEPARTMENT.In this department girls and young ladies not pre-

pared to enter the Academic Department will receive

thorough instruction in all branches intended to fit

them for admission into higher classes.

ACADEMIC DEPARTMENT.

The course of study in this department embracesEnglish, Mathematics, Latin, French and German. In-

struction in all branches is thorough, fitting young-

ladies to enter any college they niay wish to attend.

The Principal exercises a general supervision over the

school. His personal attention is given to Mathemat-ics. Special stress is given to the advantage a Latin

quaintance with analysis and parsing. Young ladies

finishing our Academic course can graduate at any Fe-

male College in this State in one Year.

PENMANSHIP.In order that every girl who attends the Kinsey Sem-

inary may be able to write a good hand, a- certain part

of each day is devoted to practice in writing under the

supervision of a good teacher. Those who enter our

Preparatory Department have a good opportunity to

learn to write as it is taught systematically.

STUDY AND RECITATIONS.

When not on recitation during school hours, girls donot study in their rooms but in the chapel under the

supervision of a teacher. At night, they are required to

spend two hours in preparing their lessons for next day,

which they do in the chapel, one of the teachers being

present to render assistance and keep order.

RELIGIOUS PRIVILEGES.

A portion of the sacred scriptures is read before the

whole school every morning accompanied with singing

and appropriate devotion. The school also enjoys the

opportunity of attending religious exercises of the dif-

ferent denominations every Sunday. Whenever the

girls attend services, they are accompaniedjby a teacher.

BUILDINGS.

Our new school building is a handsome, two-stowstructure, built in connection with the Principal's resi-

dence, containing on first floor chapel, recitation rooms,

dining room and Principal's office. On second floor,

are bed-rooms for pupils and teachers. Rooms are

spacious and properly ventilated. Only two girls oc-

cupy one room. The Domestic and Scholastic Depart-

should be plainly marked with full name of pupil. Wewill not be responsible for clothing not thus marked,

i

ENTRANCE AND DEDUCTION.

Prompt entrance at beginning of session is earnestly

desired. The delay of a few weeks causes embarrass-

ment to a pupil entering a class somewhat advanced.

at the option of the Principal. Those who leave school

before the close of the term will be charged for boardand tuition for whole session unless the pupil is compell-

ART DEPARTMENT.The Art Department has been for the past year and

will be for the ensuing year under the care of Miss MaryA. Day, B. P., a graduate of the Fine Art Course of

Syracuse University. This department of the school is

in a growing condition. In evidence of this the NewBerne Fair of 1889 awarded our Seminary premiumsfor the best Oil painting and Crayon drawing. This

year the same Association gave premiums for best Oil

painting, best Crayon drawing, best Pen and Ink workand Diploma for best collection of Photographs by aNorth Carolina artist. These facts are very gratifying

to both teachers and pupils. Miss Day uses the methodrecognized as best, and taught in the best schools. She

teaches drawing from casts and nature as well as the

principles of perspection. Drawing is taught in pencil,

charcoal and crayon, and painting in oil and water

colors. Our Studio is furnished with a collection of

casts and busts which art students use free of charge.

STENOGRAPHY, TYPE-WRITINGAnd Book=Keeping.

In order to fit young ladies to earn a livelihood in

business, light and pleasant, and that legitimately be-

long to them, we have added to our course Stenography,Type-writing and Book-keeping. Stenography andType-writing are optional and classes will be so ar-

ranged as not to conflict with the regular studies. Par-

ents with daughters dependent upon their own exertions

will do well to give them advantage of this instruction.

PHYSICAL CULTURE.Daily exercise is given all pupils in Calisthenics with

Indian Clubs and Dumb Bells to develop and strengthen

the physical constitution. None will be excused fromthese exercises unless under the advise of a physician.

No extra charge for this.

EXAMINATIONS.These are made at end of each month and are both

written and oral. They are compulsory as to whole

class and are as important as the recitations in deter-

mining a pupil's standing in her studies. The result of

these examinations will be posted in chapel monthlyand kept on our record book for reference and exami-

nation by parents and guardians.

A LITERARY SOCIETY

has been organized by the pupils for their mutual im-

provement, and meetings are held every Friday evening

in a hall set apart for that purpose. Recognizing in

this society a potent factor for good, we advise all

pupils to join it.

VISITING AND CORRESPOND=ENCE.

As absence from school interferes with the welfare andprogress of the pupils, the visiting- of homes or friends

under ordinary circumstances cannot be allowed. In

granting leave of absence, the Principal will be govern-

ed by general rules impartially applied to all. It is not

our desire to exclude young ladies from all social inter-

course, but experience has taught us that they cannot

go into general society and attend to their studies at

the same time. Visitors coming from the homes of the

pupils and wishing to call on them must present letters

of introduction from parents or guardians. Parents

committing their daughters to our charge are respect-

fully asked to consider the above and also the follow-

ing:

Young ladies, while boarding in the school, will not

be allowed to attend places of amusement, except in

charge of teachers, or to spend the night out of the

school. No permission, written or otherwise, can annul

this regulation, and parents are particularly requested

GENERAL REMARKS.The Kinsey Seminary is owned and managed by the

Principal. Its patrons are, therefore, informed that the

greatest care is used in selecting competent teachers.

The object in teaching is thoroughness. Latin is taught

so as to acquaint the students with forms and prin-

ciples, and at the same time make them ready and exact

in translation. In teaching Mathematics it is intended

to combine practical knowledge with mental discipline.

Little value is attached to mere mechanical work; but,

at every step of the student's progress logical analysis

and demonstration are required. The student is ex-

pected to step behind the rule and become a rule-maker.

No one is allowed to drag along in the class, but mustdo the work assigned to the class. Those who labor

faithfully, but acquire with difficulty, are not discour-

aged; they are either transferred to classes where the

work is suited to their powers, or persuaded to go over

the ground, once traversed, a second time. Judicious

assistance is given to the pupil at every step, especially

» to such as need more help than others. Parents andguardians are earnestly solicited not to consent to the

absence of pupils from the school during the term, either

for visiting at home or elsewhere, as it interferes ma-terially with the progress of their studies.

OPINIONS OK THE PRESS,

Willow Greexe, N. C, Aug. 30, 1889.Editor Traxscript-Messexger : I had an occasion to visit the

thriving town of LaGrange on yesterday, and must confess that I

was somewhat astonished at the rapid progress which has been madethere in the last eight or ten years. I visited the Kinsey Seminary, aboarding school for girls and young ladies, and was conductedthrough the building by Mr. Kinsey, the Principal. The school build-

ing is large enough to accommodate one hundred and fifty youngladies, and well adapted to school purposes, being finely ventilatedand ample space for outdoor exercise, located near the western limits

of the town, I should say entirely free from any local cause of disease.

Mr. Kinsey is a practical, and well balanced man, of wide and variedculture, long experienced in teaching, and has fine executive ability,

therefore I think parents, who "have girls to prepare for college or thebusiness walks of life, would do well to visit and make themselvesthoroughly acquainted with the enterprise of Mr. Kinsey who well de-

serves the patronage of the eastern counties of North Carolina.Respectfully, E. H. Horxaday, M. D.

One of the most pleasing incidents of yesterday was the appearanceon the Fair grounds of about fifty young ladies of the LaGrangeFemale Seminary under the escort of Professor Joseph Kinsey. Theyoung lalfiies wore becoming gray uniform and elicited universal ad-miration. The Professor received deserved thanks for his beautifulcontribution to the pleasure and success of the day. It will be re-

membered that the Kinsey School carried off several prizes at the last

Fair, and many friends believe that they will be equallj* successful atthis. Professor Kinsey is a gentleman of culture, and an experiencedand successful teacher. We are happy to learn that the Seminary is

receiving a large patronage. The exhibit from Kinsey School is most artistically arranged, and

adds much to the appearance of the room. The pen and ink sketchesare beautifully done. Many thanks to the school for their exhibit.

New Berxe Jourxal.

Mr. Kinsey, soon after leavingTrinity, chose the profession of teaching which he has been followingfor nearly twenty years. LaGrange is indebted to him for the first

impulse given to education.
