  • Kinneil Estate2000 years of history

part of the frontiers of the roman empire world heritage site

Discover 2000 years of history in the magical Kinneil Estate, on the western edge of Boness, near Edinburgh. The name Kinneil means Walls End - and the eastern end of the turf and stone Antonine Wall, the Roman Empires northern frontier, runs through the estate. Theres even a Roman fortlet to visit (pictured above).

For centuries Kinneil was the home of the Dukes of Hamilton. Their imposing former mansion, Kinneil House, dates back to the 15th century and features impressive renaissance wall paintings, said to be among the nest in Scotland. See inside during free open days. *

The park features the remains of Kinneils medieval church and graveyard, dating back to the 12th century. You can also visit the cottage where inventor James Watt worked on developing the steam engine. Plus there are extensive woodland walks.

The story of the estate and much more is told in Kinneil Museum, open from Monday to Saturday from 12.30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Themuseum includes a shop, audio visual show and a variety of displays.
