    Design Considerations

    Introduction

    Thermal Bridging – Basic Principles Thermal bridging occurs at openings in external walls when the cavities are closed with materials of poor insulating performance.

    Such thermal bridging can produce problems of condensation and mould growth at the reveals of these openings. Prolonged exposure to condensation will lead to the deterioration of plaster and paintwork.

    Cavity Closer PLUS

    Kingspan Kooltherm® Cavity Closer is a PVC–U extrusion with a rigid thermoset insulation core, manufactured with a blowing agent that has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and low Global Warming Potential (GWP). It is manufactured in thirteen sizes from 50–150 mm. Jointing clips extend the range further by allowing the Kingspan Kooltherm® Cavity Closer sections to be joined to suit cavity widths of up to 300 mm. It is suitable for use with timber, metal or PVC window frames and can also be supplied to order in curved sections.

    Kingspan Kooltherm® Cavity Closer provides a simple and efficient method of closing cavities around openings in cavity walls. Its rigid thermoset insulation core prevents thermal bridging, and its PVC–U J–section forms a positive damp proof barrier and key for the direct application of plaster. It effectively prevents condensation and mould growth, frequently associated with traditional methods of closing cavities.

    Kingspan Kooltherm® Cavity Closer PLUS is made to order, and comprises Kingspan Kooltherm® Cavity Closer sections, prefabricated into a U-shape, to match specified opening sizes.

    Kingspan Kooltherm® Cavity Closer PLUS is available for the same range of cavity widths as standard Kingspan Kooltherm®

    Cavity Closer and helps you to achieve accurate opening sizes.

    Specification Clause Kingspan Kooltherm® Cavity Closer should be described in specifications as:–

    The insulated cavity closer shall be Kingspan Kooltherm®

    Cavity Closer __*: comprising a one piece, rigid, J-section, PVC–U extrusion, with flange keys for direct plaster application, projecting fixing flange, and premium performance rigid thermoset insulation core. The insulation component of the product shall be manufactured with a blowing agent that has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and low Global Warming Potential (GWP). The product shall be manufactured under a management system certified to BS / I.S. EN ISO 9001: 2008, BS / I.S. EN ISO 14001: 2004 and BS / I.S. OHSAS 18001: 2007; by Kingspan Insulation Limited; and installed in accordance with the instructions issued by them.

    Accredited Construction Details Background Regulators have recognised the issue of thermal bridging around openings and the significant effect that it can have on both heat loss and building degradation. The route chosen to deal with this issue has been to produce a set of details which are deemed to be of an acceptable standard. These have been published in documents entitled “Accredited Construction Details” and “Accredited Construction Details (Scotland)”.

    England & Wales A minimum thermal resistance path through the cavity closer of 0.45 m2.K/W and a minimum overlap of 30 mm between the window frame and the cavity closer are required by the Accredited Construction Details publication in order to gain compliance with the Approved Documents L in England & Wales. A 30 mm overlap between the window frame and the Kingspan Kooltherm® Cavity Closer or Kingspan Kooltherm® Cavity Closer PLUS will exceed the minimum thermal resistance path of 0.45 m2.K/W.

    Scotland Accredited Construction Details (Scotland) shows only a check reveal for compliance with the Technical Handbooks in Scotland. There is no minimum thermal resistance path or overlap as this is not necessary with a check reveal.

    Selecting a Section � The width of cavity to be closed will decide the size of

    section, or combination of sections to be used.

    � Kingspan Kooltherm® Cavity Closer and Kingspan Kooltherm® Cavity Closer PLUS are normally fixed with their flange against the inner leaf as shown.
