Treasurer’s Report
The total net income is currently $55,000. The staff volleyball game had a net income of $1400.
Field trips were recorded for Kings Glen in the past month.
The PTA will carry $14,500 over to the 2012-13 school year.
Motion for the principals of Kings Park and Kings Glen to designate remaining balance for cultural
arts, field trips, technology, and staff development for the remaining 2011-12 school year expenses
by Noelle Looney, seconded by Erica Hosken and approved by unanimous consent.
Principals Minutes
Mr. Elson reported that KG is in the middle of SOL testing. June 18 and 19 will be all day staff
development. Girls on the Run was a great success. 39 out of 40 girls in the program ran the 5k.
Mrs. Smith reported that they too are in the middle of SOLs. Construction is in full swing. Underground plumbing will start this week. Kindergarten registration and assessments will happen
throughout the summer. Yearbooks will be handed out after the end of SOLs.

2012-13 calendar
Family fun fitness nights are scheduled in January. Kim Shaw is writing a grant to purchase equipment and paper for those nights. There will be 6 PTA meetings in 2012-13, and some are
scheduled during the day.
After School Programs The TopKick partnership continues at KG. There will be an after school mind and body program
next year that will fund a mobile iPad lab at Kings Glen. TopKick will also sponsor a few parents' nights out. There is the possibility of a summer program, but most likely he programs will start at
beginning of school year. Andrew Gause will continue at Kings Park. Girls on the Run, chess club, and overtime athletics will continue next year. Junior Lego league may start next fall.
PTA Conferences
There is a PTA leadership program at LBSS on June 9. The PTA can pay for members to attend. Virginia PTA Annual Conference July 12 through 14 is in Richmond and Erica Hosken and Kristen
Minichello will attend.
No Left Turn Resolution The PTA discussed the problems caused by kiss and ride vehicles making a left turn onto Clydesdale
Road. John Cooke, Braddock District Representative, suggested that the PTA adopt a resolution that he could use when making a case to VDOT. Motion to adopt the following resolution by Erika
Hosken, seconded by Jackie Kurisky, and approved by unanimous consent. The Kings Park/Kings Glen Parent Teacher Association supports the addition of a no left turn sign at the exit from
Harrow Way onto Clydesdale Road during drop off and pick up hours at school.
Old Business
The special education committee had two events since last PTA meeting. Both were very well received.
Teacher appreciation week went well and the PTA has gotten many thank you notes.
International Night was a success. There was great food, displays, and entertainment. Hopefully the
event will continue next year. Motion to adjourn by Jackie Kurisky seconded by Emily Rusch, and passed by unanimous consent.

Treasurer’s Report
The Silent Auction had a net income is $14, 626. The total net income for the year is currently $62,134. Principals Minute
Mrs. Lin reported that the construction is well underway. The school is starting a construction blog to keep parents informed. The construction workers are leveling ground and putting in footers and exits have been changed. The construction project manager is very responsive and checks in with Mrs. Lin twice a day. The volunteer luncheon is on April 16 from 10 to 12:00. April 13 will be an Autism Awareness event. The Art Gala is April 30. Mr. Elson reported that Alice in Wonderland Jr. finished the week before spring break and it went very well. Girls on the Run is full at 40 girls. SCA elections will be soon, with heavy campaigning well under way. Hoe Down Day will be April 20. Old Business
KP Yearbook Orders due tomorrow, 4/11. There will be no yearbook sales after April 11.
International Night will be May 18 at 6 pm. The next planning meeting will be April 26th in the KP liaison trailer.

By-Law Revision
Proposal to change number of meeting per year to 4. Motion by Erica Hosken, second by Jackie Kurisky, passed by unanimous consent.
A tentative PTA 2012-13 Schedule was presented. There will be changes made to some events, in particular the Silent Auction. There is currently no chair, so the event may end up being Baskets and Bingo. The Board is proposing new events in the winter that focus on wellness. The events wouldn’t cost anything to attend, but would hopefully increase community involvement. PTA meeting nights may change depending upon the Board.
2012-13 Budget
The 2012-13 budget was reviewed line by line and opened to discussion. Members agreed to revise amount carried over into new school year to $14,500 in order to cover actual startup expenses.
Mrs.Lin shared that Kings Park works hard to have a welcoming atmosphere for all families and hosts many family nights and events. Reclarification was given that siblings are welcome to be at school for events such as Dance Mania, Musical performances, author’s celebrations, daily lunch in the cafeteria and Thanksgiving lunch to name a few. During all evening school events families are welcomed and encouraged. However, when a parent is volunteering siblings (or any additional children) are not allowed. This helps ensure the quality of the instructional environment and everyone’s safety.

Treasurer’s Report
Contributions are still coming in, including checks from the Queensbury HOA, Andrew
Gause's Martial Arts, and Austin Grill. As of the meeting, the Silent Auction had netted $13,401. All of the expenses had still not been paid out. The final deposits have been
made for the REACH reading fundraiser. There was a net income of 23,404.73 from that program. The total net income is currently $60,700. The next PTA meeting will focus on the budget for 2012-13.
Principals Minute
Mrs. Lin reported that construction is getting underway. All displaced classes and
offices have been relocated. Construction fences will go up this week. March 27 will be a second and third grade literacy event. Children will get books, and parents will learn about reading comprehension and county wide resources.
Mr. Elson reported that the fifth grade SOL writing test will start March 6. Other SOLs
will be given in May. Kings Glen will also pilot online SOL testing this year. Girls on the Run is starting soon at Kings Glen.
Old Business
Silent Auction Volunteers were thanked for their hard work Pre-raffle ticket sales brought in over
$500. Only 40 were sold last year. The committee welcomes comments so that changes
can be made to improve the event, in case it is held again. Without several volunteers
this event will not happen next year.
International Night There will a March 29 meeting. The meeting in February had a good response. The first
flyer goes out March 6. The event is planned for May 18.
New Business The next two PTA meetings will look to next year. Two new candidates will be selected
for Board. The PTA also needs a REACH chair and a silent auction chair. Nominations will be made in April and the vote will be in May. The 2012-13 budget will be presented
in April and voted on in May. Anyone interested in volunteering for the nominating
committee should contact Erica Hosken.
The Bylaws will be reviewed, including changes allowing less meetings per year.
The staff volleyball game is April 13.
The next PTA meeting is April 10 at Kings Park.

Presentation by Tom Ours, Construction Manager for Kings Park addition
The Kings Park renovation will begin in the coming weeks. A new quad will be delivered this week and
construction will begin within a month. The project is projected to last a year. New classrooms will be added
to the kindergarten pod and near the playground. There will also be work done to bring some bathrooms and
parking up to current ADA standards.
A field construction representative will work at Kings Park every day if needed. RJ Crowley Company is the
contractor for the job. Contractors will all have a badge and all will have safety background checks. Extensive
precautions will be taken to protect students, including safety inspections, air quality monitoring, and
installation of construction fencing. Indoor work will happen at night and over the weekend to minimize
disruption to students and teachers. There will be no work done during the SOLs or on the first day of
school. There will be no community use of the school during the construction. Questions about the project
can be sent to Mrs. Lin via email. She will send any question she cannot answer on to Mr. Ours.

Treasurer’s Report
Movie Night in January had a net profit of $200. There was a bit more REACH income ($1,710 ) in January.
The PTA’s net income as of 1/31/2012 is $46,908.
Principals Minute
Mrs. Mallory reported that Girls on the Run registration will start after Presidents Day, and the program starts
March 13. Kings Glen is gearing up for 5th grade SOLs. The state of Virginia is moving to all online testing
next year for SOLs. There will be field test for online writing tests at Kings Glen after real SOLs this spring.
Mrs. Lin reported that the big news at Kings Park is the renovation project that will begin in the coming
weeks. The 100th day of school is on Valentine’s Day and Dance Mania on 9th and 10th of this month.
Dining and dancing for the SOLs for third graders is also coming up. The parent liaison coffee, Bullying
Awareness and Prevention, will be on Thursday, February 9 at 11 am.
Old Business
Elke Trick provided a Silent Auction update. The auction catalog will be available on the PTA website. Kim
Shaw is working to get volunteers for that night. The PTA needs help with setup, running the event, and
closing bidding tables. The last committee meeting will be February 21 at 9 am.
The International Night committee had its first meeting in January. A flyer gauging interest levels for the
event will go out next Tuesday. The next planning meeting will be Thursday, February 23rd at 10:30 in the
Kings Park parent liaison trailer.
The next PTA meeting will be March 6th at Kings Park with a speaker following the meeting on Raising
Resilient Children.

Treasurer’s Report There is currently a net income of $50,435.66. Expenses in December and early January included a
movie night, field trip transportation, staff development, copy paper, and a special project to clean up King Glen grounds. REACH donations have slowed. The net income for the fundraiser stands at
$24,200.
Principals Minute Mrs. Lin reported that there is a new traffic pattern for buses that lessens stress on the bus drivers.
January 18 is another progress report information night since it will be the first time the kindergartners get a progress report. There is testing coming up for children who are English
language learners that includes group and individual testing.
Mr. Elson reported that there was a great performance by the sixth grade chorus at Zoo Lights in December. Kings Glen was given a new staff position for the self-contained autism class and Brandy
Moss started in the position right after holiday. January 11 is the 5th and 6th grade string and chorus concert. January 19 will be the beginning 4th grade strings concert.
Old Business
The PTA directory will come out soon. There have been many challenges this year pulling it together, including the addition of email addresses. Printing will happen the week of January 16 and
then distribution will happen soon thereafter. Volunteers are welcome to help with the process.
New Business The April PTA meeting date needs to change due to spring break and a school holiday the Monday
after break. The date will most likely be Tuesday, April 10. Movie night featuring Kung Fu Panda 2 will be January 20. The PTA still needs volunteers for that
night.
The February 6 PTA meeting will have a speaker on Avoiding the Homework Blues. The March 5 meeting will have speaker on Raising Resilient Children.
The KP Yearbook production will be managed by Jeanne Lowe. It will cost 18 and orders will be
due 4/25.
Wei Smith has volunteered to run International Night on May 18. A planning meeting will be held on January 18 at 10:30.
Silent Auction planning is going well. Community donations continue to come in at a good pace.
Teacher donations are due in February. Classroom baskets are moving along now that email lists have been given to parent coordinators. Many volunteers will be needed for that night. Flyers
requesting parent donations are going out on January 10. All of the information will be on PTA website and Facebook. The next Silent Auction Committee meeting will be in February.
PTA would like to establish a Fundraising Evaluation Committee to evaluate fundraising efforts and
explore other options. Volunteers are needed for the committee as soon as possible.
The PTA will coordinate the paperwork for the Kings Glen Girls on the Run program in the spring. Chess club will continue at KG. Jump rope and Overtime Athletics will start at KG in the coming

Treasurer’s Report
There is a net income of $2,528.50 for membership. The REACH reading fundraiser has a net income of
$22,742.84. There is a net income of $3132.95 for Spiritwear sales. The current treasurer's report showed a total net
of $50,598 as of the meeting date.
Principals Minute
Mr. Elson reported that the Kings Glen Book Fair is this week. Human growth and development classes will be
next week for fifth and sixth. Fourth graders will get one day of human growth and development instruction.
Mrs. Lin reported that there was an unplanned fire drill late in the afternoon on December 5 and the fire alarm
systems in place worked well. Kings Park will soon have a new Autism teacher, Courtney Thieberger, who brings
wide experience to KP.
Old Business
Austin Grill Spirit Night brought $491 and 203 people participated. The income is comparable to McDonald’s
spirit nights. The PTA may plan a spirit week with Glory Days in the spring.
REACH has a net income of $22,742.84, which is at its budgeted level. More donations may come in later as well.
There were a higher number of people participating than in last few years.
Mr. Elson and Mrs. Lin had a meeting with the cluster supervisor regarding the parents group for students with
IEPs. The meeting went well and the initiative will move forward. More information will be shared with parents
soon.
PTA directory will be out soon. Adding the emails and removing the opt outs made the process slower this year.
New Business
PTA member Diane Clayton reported on her research on forming a dads group. She spoke to the Terra Center ES
Watch DOGS (Dads of Great Students) representative. The first step in forming a DOGS group at KP/KG will be
to have a video orientation with school administrators, the parent representative, and a teacher representative. The
involved parties will schedule a time for the video conference.
Elke Trick, chairman of Silent Auction, reported plans are moving forward. Many business donations are coming in
already. Classroom basket flyers will go home to students soon.
Jeanne Lowe has offered to put together a KP yearbook. Splendid Portraits has an online Easybook option that
would work well. Mrs. Lin asked that discussion of the yearbook continue at a later date.
The planned community event for January, International Night, is in need of a chairperson.
There will be spring after school activities at Kings Glen provided by Overtime athletics. They may offer a jump
rope and conditioning class. Chess club will continue into the spring.

Treasurer’s Report
The current treasurer's report showed a net of $3096 for spirit wear sales. Movie night netted $363 and Fall Festival netted $1715. REACH income was $17,410 as of the meeting and more income is expected. More expenses will come in as the year goes on.
Principals Minute
Mrs. Lin complemented the PTA on a great Fall Festival. She added that Thanksgiving lunch will be
November 18 and volunteers are needed. Volunteers are also needed for the Book Fair in December. General
volunteers are needed in many places in the school and training will be provided.
Mr. Elson reported that it has been a good first quarter and that the Kings Glen staff was up and running
quickly this year. The Kings Glen Thanksgiving lunch was on November 11 and turnout was great.
Old Business
Fall Festival was a successful event. Those who attended liked the new traffic patterns and activities.
REACH is going well and has a highest level of participation since the first year it was started. Final numbers
for donations should be available in the coming months.
The PTA’s new Facebook page is proving to be a good way to stay connected with parents.
Mr. Elson & Ms. Lin will be meeting with the Cluster Superintendent on Friday to discuss how the proposed
POSIEP group goes forward.
Reflections had a record number of entries- 56 total for Kings Park and Kings Glen.
New Business
Austin Grill Spirit night will be November 16. 20% of total sales will be donated to the KP/KG PTA if 100
people turn in receipts. There may be another spirit night at Glory Days in the spring.
A Silent Auction planning meeting will be November 28 at 7 pm. More classroom basket parents are needed.
The Silent Auction will be March 2 at Kings Glen. It is the second biggest fundraiser of the year and many
volunteers are needed.
International Night planning will start at a meeting on November 21 at 7 pm at Caribou Coffee.
One of the main goals for this school year for the PTA is to involve more people as volunteers. The PTA
needs membership and volunteer coordinators.
Erica Hosken provided a brief overview of Superintendent of Schools meeting with parents. One of the
topics was the use of online textbooks in middle and high schools. They also discussed the High School
Graduation Task Force. One of task force’s focuses is increasing parent involvement in schools. One way
discussed by the PTA was the introduction of a Dad’s program like the DOGS program at other elementary
schools. Diane Clayton offered to coordinate the program.

Treasurer’s Report
The current treasurer's report showed high income from spirit wear. Expenses have yet to make an impact, but will be coming in in the next few months. The budgeted split of startup funds for teachers, field trip transportation, cultural arts, and technology is 58% for Kings Park and 42% for Kings Glen.
Old Business
• Popsicles on the Playground, a play date for incoming kindergarteners, had a large attendance.
• The teacher welcome luncheon went well. Many teachers expressed gratitude for the Panera lunch provided on the day of open house.
• Movie night was a success. Although it is a community-building event, it produced a small profit.
• Spirit wear sales have gone well. This year's sales have out-paced the past two years' sales.
• A new PTA web site was launched at the end of the summer. Bill Jensen and Emily Rusch were thanked for their work on the site.
• The PTA now has a Facebook page in an effort to keep members better informed. A new email newsletter was also developed for the same purpose.
New Business
• The REACH reading fundraiser has begun. Letters are due back at the schools on October 14. REACH reading week will be October 15 through 21. REACH provides the PTA with approximately 45% of its operating budget.
• Fall Festival plans are underway. Volunteers are needs to help set up, run, and clean up the October 28 event.
• Silent Auction plans are also underway. Elke Trick, Terra Donlon, and Vivian Spathopoulos are co-chairs of the event. Further information will be sent out regarding volunteer and donation needs for this March 2 event.
• Plans for after school activities including a chess club, Overtime Athletics, FLEX foreign language, are being made. Elke Trick is waiting for county approval for the programs so that they can proceed.
• The November meeting date has been changed to 11/14.
• Austin Grill Spirit Night has been scheduled for November 16. 20% of sales that day will be donated to the KP/KG PTA.
• Reflections submissions are due October 21.
• Hannie Chambers and Laura Nickles would like to start a group for parents of students with IEPs. Ideas include connecting parents with teachers through meetings, scheduling parent coffees, and celebrating Inclusive Schools Week. The PTA Board will consider the best way to help them start this program.
