KILLARNEY COMMUNITY CENTRE SOCIETY

An Important Message About The Future Of The Killarney Community CentreFall has arrived and with it the rain. As people now look for indoor programs for the Fall and Winter months, we hope youwill get a chance to participate in and enjoy the many programs that are being offered.

Many people I talk to in our community do not realized that Killarney Community Centre is jointly operated in partnershipwith the Killarney Community Centre Society (KCCS) and the Vancouver Parks Board. This partnership has been successfullybringing first class recreation programs to the citizens of Killarney for over 50 years. The revenues generated throughprograms in the community centre are reinvested back into OUR community centre. Examples of how the KCCS has investedin our community centre are:• Slide and ozone system on the pool• Rock climbing wall and inflatable toys for the pool• Score clock, sound system and seating area in the rink• Furniture in the lobby area

As I write this message to all of the members of our community, Killarney Community Centre Society (KCCS) is hard atwork trying to negotiate a joint operating agreement with the Parks Board. The Parks Board has proposed changes to theJoint Operating Agreement that will fundamentally change the successful partnership we have had. The Parks Board isproposing that all revenues generated through programs at the community center will go directly to the Parks Board not theKCCS. The Parks Board will then make decisions on how much money is given to each community center across the city.

All community centres have been told by the Parks Board that the proposal is NON NEGOTIABLE. We strongly believe thatthis is not in the best interests of our community. The KCCS have been working hard on a counter proposal that will takeinto account the current needs of the Parks Board while being able to continue to have the financial means to keep theKillarney Community Centre the great place it is today.

At some point in the very near future the members of the Killarney Community Centre will need to come together to tellthe Parks Board and City Of Vancouver how important our community centre is to us. Please watch for upcoming informationsessions that will be happening and help us send the message that we all need to have a say in that happens in our community.

Respectfully,Ainslie KwanPresident KCCS
