Did you know?
• 26 million Americans have Chronic Kidney Disease and millions of others are at increased risk
• 548,000 people in the United States have end-stage renal disease (kidney failure so advanced that it cannot be reversed)
– This number will grow by 50% during the next 20 years

• And… many more deaths are caused from Kidney Failure but are deemed as something else
– Up to 20% of people with diabetes die of kidney failure
– 50% of people with kidney failure die from heart disease
• Kidney Failure can be connected to…
The harsh truth is…
• Kidney failure cannot be treated with conventional medical treatments such as drugs
• Only 2 treatments allow individuals to continue living: Dialysis or a Kidney Transplant

Many are just waiting while they endure
• 2000: 47,000 U.S. people were waiting for a kidney transplant
• 2010: 83,950 were waiting
• It can take up to 7 years for an individual to find a kidney… While they wait they survive by dialysis…
• 15,430 Americans received a transplant in 2010

The truth about Dialysis
Dialysis is like chemotherapy – other than it is a short term mask, versus a cure
•The number of U.S. dialysis centers have increased approximately 4% each year
•1998: 3,394 dialysis centers
•2008: 4,957 dialysis centers
•382,343 End stage renal disease patients are on dialysis at least 3 times a week

Why so many dialysis centers?
• From 1996 to 2007, there was a 57% increase in the number of people receiving dialysis treatments

Which causes billions to be spent
• The Medicare system alone spends $25 billion on dialysis treatments each year, and it is projected to increase
• Dialysis treatments cost between $4,341 and $9,760 per month depending on frequency and insurance coverage
– Totaling $117,120 per year
Not only is dialysis monetarily draining, but emotionally as well…

What is it like to have to survive through dialysis?
• For 2 ½ years Amanda received dialysis treatments that lasted 4 hours long and left her exhausted, in pain and stressed
• Her food intake was limited and water intake reduced to 500cc a day to reduce the risk of edema

“When your body is not ridding itself of salts, you feel like you've had 3 fast food meals without being able to drink... It’s a form of torture… I played the clown, juggling these values... Fighting for time, fighting to retain my health until I could have a transplant”
The truth about kidney transplants
Kidney transplants are one of the most successful transplant procedures today…
– Individuals who receive a kidney from a live donor have a 96% success rate

Transplants are more cost effective
• According to Medicare expenditures, kidney transplants are by far the most cost-effective kidney treatment
• A kidney transplant procedure costs approximately $110,000
• One year worth of dialysis treatments can cost up to $117,000

Total Medicare Expenditures for Kidney Therapy Treatments
The benefits outweigh the cost
• When a person receives a kidney they are cured and able to fully function for the next 20 years of their life
• Ask yourself…
“How much heartache and money could be saved each year if more kidney transplants occurred?”
“How many lives could be saved?”

Increasing kidney
donations will substantially
reduce Medicare costs…
And save lives!© Laurence Verga Consulting - 2010 17
The Price of Renal Failure
The results of receiving a new kidney are immeasurable…

• She disliked dialysis so much that the idea the transplant could fail never occurred to her
• The transplant was successful…

“I feel eternally grateful. I have been given a new life. I am changed. The simplest acts are amazing to me. To be able to drink a half-liter of water, without fearing for my life. To cave-in on occasion and eat fast food. Sleeping in, running. Things I dreamt of for years, accessible to me once more… It doesn't bother me that I have someone else’s organ, because this is exactly what I would want my organs to be used for. I hope that I can save someone's life one day, and repay the debt.”
You are the cure!
