And subhan+Allah see how easy Allah <a,la has made the earth ookat the ground it is easy to cultivate soft to dig wells easy to !ull out it,s soilminerals metals to benefit us.

Explore all sides of the earth

$o walk in its . <he word comes fromthe root of mun+kab or shoulder. Walk on its shoulders what does thatmean $cholars comments and say that this an expression. <he root of theword shoulder is na+ka+ba which means sides of something. $o there is areference to walk on all sides of the earth it is strong it is for your benefit

look at the greatness of Allah.

Also ?bn+Abbas comments that the word refers to themountains. $o ?bn+Abbas is telling us that this refers that the earth at ishighest and strongest !oints meaning the mountains is accesssable to usand for our benefit.

Verbal diom! Strong yet humble

Another comment on this !hrase of refers to the"erbial idiom of camel that is an animal that is so strong and !owerful butit is at the same time so humble that #hen you #ant to get on its

bac$% it lo#ers itself and you literally #al$ on its shoulders to climbon its bac$&

Eat'onsume of llah*s +ro"isions

$o here the scholars comment that the word Bri3q7refers not only to the food but all the benefits that we get from the earth.'rom its water !lants animals farmland metals minerals and so on.

,o and #or$ and benefit from the earth

$cholars also comment that this also refers to going out andworking to benefit oneself.

Return back to reection

$o after Allah <a,la tells to that He has made the earth managable tractableeasy for us to us and go and e"!lore all its tracts all its corners and benefit

from it,s bounties Allah then says .

$o our attention is again returned back to the hereafter.

Resurrection is like unfolding

$o the root of refers to s!reading to unfold. And so the day ofresurrection is when we are go through hashr gathered together in one hugecrowd and then nashr or s!read into our various grou!s.

Also from an indivdual basis when we are com!acted in our graves and outbones and flesh turn into dust then on the day of Dudgment those samebodies will come together and be s!read into our normal form.

$o the discourse or reflection is you are walking around this earth you arebenefitting from it you are e"!loring it you are enDoying from all of itsbounties but reali3e that you will die into that same earth and one day youwill come back out of that same earth to your Ereator Allah <a,la and allthis benefit you are getting has a conclusion and reali3e who is giving youthese benefits it is Allah <a,la and you will held accountable by Allah again +

Ayah 16 Same Earth can swallow you

Have you found a sense of security (do you feel completely secure) that the

One in the heavens [Allah], that He would which refers to compress, envelope, suck something

This is a harsh word, even by its pronunciation.

t can imply and refer to the !clipse (i.e. "hasaf al #amar [$unar eclipse]). %othis eclipse is slowly and &radual.

combined with the word !Ardd "earth# refers to the $arthsucking someone in

Think of %uick sand as example &ut here it refers that this fallinginto a %uicksand as punishment

An example from Surat 'asas a(ah )* talks about 'aroon beingpunished b( being swallowed b( the earth+

%o this ayah of this surah is implyin& /o you feel safe, that the One who is inthe heavens will not mae you suc into the !arth0

n the e1pression the letter ba refers to the earthfully latchin& and pullin& you down.

%o in order to understand this the scholars &ive the e1ample ima&ine youhave a 2ar of su&ar and you put a spoon in it. 'hen the spoon is partially inwhat would you do to have the spoon fall all the way into the su&ar0 3ouwould shae it. 3ou would shae to have spoon totally enveloped by thesu&ar.

This is somethin& ima&inable and it is clear that is is an e1tremely violentpunishment.

Ayah 17 Punishment from above

%o here the refers to 6Or7 which is tells that the same line of 8uestionin&

is continuin&.

Stones from the sk( and example /ut AS people

%o the scholars refers either of two thin&s.

9irst could refer to a stones fallin& from the sy as a punishment. Asan e1ample we 5nd in %urat Al #amar (4:;:) the people of $ut, who violated

the boundaries of Allah by inventin&, pioneerin&, startin& the sin ofhomose1uality. And after continuous warnin&s about stoppin& this immoralact, so one of the punishments came down includin& the rainin& down ofstones from the sy, as Allah informs us

.

Tornado storms down

A second meanin& of is lie a tornado that pics up the stones, homes, people, livestoc, trees and then rains them bac down the earth.

So it could be like stones falling from the sk(. or a strong tornadopicks up the stones from the ground and pelts them at (ou So the%uestion is do we feel secure from that

The second part of this ayah isThen (ou will soon come to know how 0( warning was

These people who too the messa&e as a 2oe they will truly reali<e thatAllah=s punishment is real. Then they will cry to Allah to &ive us one more

chance. >ut then it will be too late.

So the warning of the hereafter. the wakeup call is repeated. andAllah is gi,ing us the warning from di1erent angles $arlier in thechapter we were details of the hell 2re. and bla3ing. breathing 2re4ow we are warned from the perspecti,e of the earth below us andthe sk( abo,e us To remind us not to forgetful our true purpose oflife. and our accountabilit( that is coming in the next life

Ayah 18 Allah’s surrise unishment

And indeed those before them belied (the essen&ers of Allah), then how

Hitting hand on the table

%o the $am here is used for emphasis.

And the used in classical Arabic refers to a thump, or when you hit yourhand on the table and then mae a statement. %o when hit my hand on thetable what does this si&nify0t means am serious, mean business, am not playin& around. %o if slammy hand on the pulpit and say 6Absolutely not talin& durin& the hutbah, itis haram7, then you now am serious.

Also note how 2ust sounds powerful. 3ou now as your #uran teacherand they will tell that #aaf is a heavy letter, a full mouth letter, and daal withsuoon &ives you the 8uality of 8al8ala or bouncy sound. %o here we have aheavy letter combined with a bouncy letter and becomes a power soundin&word that delivers a punch.

%o And indeed without adoubt there were those in the past who denied

So how terrible was 0( re5ection of them6adh-dhaba - someone Denies something or accuse someone of/(ing

Na$eer 4 Surprise +unishment

Scholar also comment that the word root means something

that is unde2ned So here refers to punishment that

comes out of nowhere. unannounced

And so this word is used here rather than adhaab. becausewhen (ou are walking on the street (ou do not expect that theground will suck (ou up. or when (ou look at the sk( (ou do notexpect that stones could rain down upon (ou

t also implies that loo there were people who did do bad, and they werepunished. 3ou could face an Bne1pected punishment (Daeer) if you followtheir e1ample.

$onclusion %iscourse of Ayah 15& 16& 17& and 18:

The discourse or narrative in ayah -4 starts out by tellin& us that the earthhas been created easy, soft, mana&eable for us, so we have our way with. %othen &o and e1plore all of its tracts, wor, and earn the substance that Allahhas put in it, but remember that in the end you will die, and after you die you

will be returned to your Ereator so obey Allah. n ayah -? the narrativecontinues that same earth that you have your way with now that Allahcould mae to where it swallows you up, as what happened to #aroon whore2ected the messa&e of truth, and so the earth was ordered to swallow himand his wealth. n ayah -@ the narrative continues that the sy that is aboveyou that you en2oy, its beauty, the sun shinin& from, the cloudy Foatin& in it,now that same sy could turn into a violent tornado or you could be pepperwith stones, lie what happened with the people $ut who invent homose1uality and when they became insistent on this sin, then stones startedrainin& down on their town.
