Open source application software is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open source application software is the most prominent example of open source development and often compared to user-generated content or open content movements. The term open source application software originated as part of a marketing campaign for free application software.

Hardware

Computer hardware refers to the physical parts of a computer and related devices. Internal hardware devices include motherboards, hard drives, and RAM. External hardware devices include monitors, keyboards, mice, printers, and scanners.

Software

Software consists of carefully-organized instructions and code written by programmers in any of various special computer languages. Software is divided commonly into two main categories: (1) System software: controls the basic (and invisible to the user) functions of a computer and comes usually preinstalled with the machine. The Linux kernel is released under the GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2) (plus some firmware images with various non-free licenses[), and is developed by contributors worldwide. Day-to-day development discussions take place on the Linux kernel mailing list.

The Linux kernel was initially conceived and created in 1991 by Finnish computer science student Linus Torvalds.
