An international group of interns were invited by Taller KEN to create a public design-build intervention in Guatemala City. The city contains very few public spaces. The site chosen for our intervention is on the grounds of el Teatro Nacional. Closed off from the public for several decades, our goal was to reactivate the space as a

cultural hub, inviting the people back to their theater. The design creates an experiential path that leads the public back to the theater and park, and a colorful canopy to house cultural events. After one month of design and one month of construction, the space opened to the public August 2016.

Through a process of public outreach and meetings with local businesses, all materials used throughout the project were donations, both from local interest and international aid.

A retreat in nature that heals children and their families through sensory stimulation. In designing a pediatric hospice, the focus has been to create a celebration of life, a healing, comforting, and engaging environment for terminally ill children and their families. The vision for achieving this has been to

create a camp-like setting. An illness should not hold these children back from the joys of childhood. In order to experience a rich, fulfilling life until death, we must provide these children with a fully immersive environment connecting them to their roots in nature.

Columns act as wind flutes.

Kinetic facade flutters in wind. Materials invite touch.

Colored skylights create mood. Thermal comfort through floor.

A COMFORTING, SENSORY STIMULATING ENVIRONMENT THROUGH ARCHITECTURE:

UNDULATING ROOF CANOPYThe roof billows up as it reaches private therapy spaces and patient rooms, providing special intimate realms receiving light from above. This overhead experience becomes an important aspect to those bed-ridden, with eyes focused upward. Therapy spaces each have a unique colored sckylight that batehs the room in atmosphere. This light emenates out to the open spaces, setting a tone and providing wayfinding.

A walk through a forest is invigorating and healing due to the constant interaction of all sense modalities. The eye collaborates with the body and other senses. One’s sense of reality is strengthened and articulated by this constant interaction.

MATERIAL TRANSITIONAtop the raised plaza ramp, materials transition from the vehicle centered parking garage to the library. Guests walk along the board-formed concrete, and are brought under the wooden canopy that is the library.

RAMPS CARVING SPACESThe library embraces the ramps of its parking garage, and is carved by their form. The space above and within these ramps become the most important spaces of the library.

Communal spaces occupy the sloping areas of the library; this is where reading, studying, and gathering occurs. Above the streetfront community plaza ramp, the second floor houses the primary reading and study space. This leads to the outdoor terrace projecting a view north towards downtown Kansas City.

BRANCHING OFF TO VIEWSThe form is created by each datum’s pull towards nature. Studios and artist spaces reach out towards the solitude and calmness of the secluded forest, while the public datum reaches for the open pond.

CIRCULATION + PRIVACYMain circulation follows the artist datum. As guests move further along the datum, spaces progressively become more private and less accessible.

GALLERY ENTRYThe gallery space acts as entry point and connects the visitor wing of the building to the artist wing.

LAYERS PIQUE INTERESTUpon entry, guests are immediately pulled down into the gallery, where views out to an exterior exhibition space draw them further. The layers end at the studio spaces, allowing guests to observe and engage in the craft.

DOMINICAN FACADEMany Dominican homes are clad in tejamanil, a weaving of wooden shingles. The facade becomes an art piece of this Dominican craft.
