Bloomberg Use MSc Finance

Financial Markets - Prof. Robin Bladen-Hovell

Bloomberg is used to provide students with practical application of core concepts developed in the moduleand reinforce the use of the Terminal as a platform for obtaining financial information on companies. Suchinformation is then used to explore, among other things, the sensitivity of equity prices to the market andhow the value of this sensitivity varies with time; the theoretical value for the company using the DividendDiscount Model and the sensitivity of this valuation to the underlying assumptions; the equity risk premiumfor the company and the company’s total return; and analysts’ recommendations for buying and selling thecompany.

Quantitative Methods in Finance - Dr Panos Sousounis

We use the Bloomberg terminal to obtain data on various economic indicators, e.g. GDP figures, interestrates, unemployment rates etc. and prices of financial instruments and products such as share prices, market indices etc. The data is then used to conduct econometric analyses leading to commentary onpast performance of markets and/or individual assets and future predictions, which informs investmentchoices.

Financial Derivatives - Dr Gabriele Lepori

In this module we use Bloomberg to price options, find real-time information about the market prices ofoptions and futures on stocks and stock market indices, and find information about analysts’ expectationsconcerning the future behaviour of exchange rates and commodities prices. Furthermore, we use theTerminal to access news articles about specific companies’ risk management strategies.

Corporate Finance - Dr Haoyong Zhou

Students on the module learn how to use Bloomberg to derive the efficient frontier in Portfolio theory –Bloomberg has excellent capability in plotting efficient frontier functions using real world data. In addition,we use Bloomberg to introduce WACC, and BETA estimations in CAMP models. These parameters arewell structured in the platform and are readily available for use in analyses.

Portfolio Risk Management - Prof. James Steeley

Students are taught how to use Bloomberg Professional’s build-in functions for portfolio management andsubsequently use these in their course assignment that requires them to build a portfolio and to attributeand evaluate its risk-adjusted performance over a three month window, and compare this to an indexbenchmark.

Financial Modelling - Prof. James Steeley

Students collect data from Bloomberg on a company’s balance sheet, income statement and cash flowdata, and use these to value the company – using the valuation techniques taught in the module. Theyalso collect time series of price data on portfolio of shares. From this data, the students then buildspreadsheet models to compute the minimum variance set of portfolios and the “tangency” portfolio.

Applied Finance - Dr Reihold Heinlein

Bloomberg is used to study time series properties like stationarity and statistical moments. Also theretrieval of financial data and the exploration of historical events from market data are practiced.

Performance Management - Tracy Clewlow

The Bloomberg Terminal is used weekly for seminar and workshop sessions to undertake research onallocated companies. Students are required to research the financial performance of their allocatedcompany, (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow Statement) as well as review and analyse keyperformance ratios as calculated by Bloomberg. Analysis is also required on macro economic indicators, industry influences and the performance of key competitors. Share prices, earnings per share (equities)and overall company performance is reviewed. The Bloomberg Terminal is used to retrieve informationthat will enable students to make informed decision on the design, monitoring and control of aperformance management system. The integration of live case study data supports the theoreticallearning that takes place in the lecture and student independent academic study. The Terminal is used tosupport research for assessment (group presentation, group report and individual essay) and students willbe expected to demonstrate their understanding of the Terminal via their presentation content.
