OVERVIEW

2013MY ZR800A/B: Z800 ZR800C/D: Z800 e version MODEL INFORMATION PAGE 3

Z: UNLEASHEDFollowing the highly popular Z750, Kawasaki proudly presents the newest model in the Zfamily. 40 years after the birth of the original Z, the Z800 takes the Z design in anaggressive new direction. While the design of its popular predecessor may be consideredsomewhat reserved, for the Z800 designers were given free rein to pursue a more vividexpression of the Z brand for the mid-size class. Engineers were equally unconstrainedwhen it came to engine and chassis design. With increased engine displacement andincreased chassis performance delivering even greater exhilaration, the Z800 offers anexciting and expressive choice of ride that makes other options seem pale in comparison.

Longer intake ducts (36.5 mm >> 41.5 mm) also suit the increased enginedisplacement and help to move the peak torque to a lower rpm. The ducts are alsowider to accommodate the larger-diameter throttle bodies.

*

Cylinder is an aluminium die-castpiece with plated bores (previouslygravity cast with steel liners). Itsopen-deck construction (previouslyclosed deck) contributes to a weightsavings of approximately 1 kg.

*

To offset the weight gained by larger-diameter pistons, piston height was reduced(47.2 mm >> 40.2 mm). The new pistons are approximately 10% lighter, reducingreciprocating weight.

*

Larger oil jet diameter (0.8 mm >> 1.2 mm) increases piston cooling capacity, contributing to increased piston durability.

*

Crankshaft journal fillets have a wider radius (1.5 mm >> 2.0 mm), offeringincreased durability to cope with the engine’s increased power.

The Z800’s high-tensile steel tubularbackbone main frame is based on theZ750R, with revised rigidity balance.

*

Use of a cast aluminium enginesub-frame allows the front enginemounts to be positioned behind thecylinder, close to the engine’s centreof gravity. This reduces enginevibration transmitted to the rider(particularly at the handlebars),greatly contributing to ride quality. The engine sub-frame also allows themain frame construction to beslimmer, and contributes to theoptimised rigidity balance.

*

Pipe used to connect the front of theengine sub-frames (from left to right)contributes to optimised frame rigidity(in particular, torsional rigidity) forincreased handling stability.

*

Through the use of a combination of rigid and rubber mounts, chassis tuningdelivers a very planted feel and a high level of feedback. The result is a superb levelof control: the rider is better able to understand what the bike is doing.
