Book Cover

There are a few versions of fancy book covers with shaped flaps thatcan be used with 16-Page Little Book, which is also presented in thispublication. 4 of the pages of the book (1st, 2nd, 15th and 16th) will

be taken by the cover and in the result the book will have 12 pagesavailable inside and partially visible endpapers on the inside cover.

Fancy Book Covers © 1997 Katrin Shumakov - page 1

Suggested sizes: Use a rectangle of paper, 2:1 in proportion andrelated to paper size used for folding 16-Page Little Book as pictured. If the paper rectangle for the book is 8:4 then the rectangle for thecover should be 4:2.

If say for the little book you are using a rectangle 8x16 inches (20x40cm) in size, then for the cover take the paper 8x4 inches (20x10 cm)in size.

Suggested paper: regular origami paper, Chiyogami, washi, handmade paper, wrapping paper, fancy recycling paper.

The height of thefinished book withthe cover will be abit more than 1/2 of the shorter side of the original rectangleas pictured.

This presents the main principle of forming of fancy covers for thelittle book that will be developed into several variants of the covers. It also can be used to cover real books. You have to have the 16-Page Little Book folded to start folding thecover. If using two-color paper, begin with colored side down.

Place the open book on the paper in the middleand carefully plan top and bottom flaps of thecover, so they are equal and keep a certainmargin in relation to the block of pages. Whenfolded they do not meet the middle exactly butkeep a gap in about 1/8 of the short side of theoriginal rectangle as pictured.

Fold and unfold therectangle in half.

This should bethe result. Openthe flaps out.

Fold the rectangle inhalf from right to left.

Slightly squeezing the book, place it on the folded edge asshown to determine the size of the book spine. The size of the spine depends of the thickness and size of paper youhave used, so there is no universal recipe. However, thesize of about 1/8 of the top edge as pictured will be sufficient...Follow the next steps to make the book spine folds.

Working with the middle of the upper flap, fold it in half as shown…

…at the same time, move apart thestrained layers of the flap and squashthem into the triangular surfaces asshown in the next step.

This should be the result. Press the paper flat, and then unfold the middle folds.

Open up the upper flap.

Now pressing the paper to the tablesurface in places shown by red circle, straighten the edge in the middle, bringing the paper down and towardyou, along the existing fold-lines, asif you are forming a little ‘balcony’ asshown in the next step.

Continue bring the straightened paper (‘balcony’) down into the positionshown in the next step, therebyflattening it and forming the side foldsas shown.

This should be the result. Now repeat the

same (steps 14-19) for the bottom flap.

This simplified cover is designed for origami novices who can notcomprehend the folding of the base cover due to some reasonsyet, but want to have the similar cover. So this design will help toachieve the similar visual appearance of the cover with plain flaps, but there will be a lack of connection of the book and the cover inthe book spine, which can be compensated by a simple drop of glue to fix the book position on the cover.

Valley fold the top and bottom flapsalong the existing fold-lines.

First 12 steps are the same as for the base cover.Place the folded book as shown todetermine the side flaps, so that the cover will be expanded with a little margin withrespect to the book pages. Fold and unfoldthe side flap and be sure they are equal.

This should be the result. Valley fold andunfold the borders of the book spine as shown.Take the opened book and insert

the endpapers into the side flapslike into the pockets.

This should be the result.Optionally, you may add a dropof glue to the book spinebetween the book and the cover.

Book Cover

This cover is featuring the full flaps inside, which covering endpaperscompletely and designed for the 16-Page Little Book, which is alsopresented in this publication. 4 of the pages of the book (1st, 2nd,

15th and 16th) will be taken by the cover and in the result the bookwill have 12 pages available inside. This design also can be usedindependently to cover any book.

Suggested sizes: Use a rectangle of paper, 5:2 in proportion andrelated to paper size used for folding 16-Page Little Book as pictured. If the paper rectangle for the book is 8:4 then the rectangle for thecover should be 5:2.If say for the little book you are using a rectangle 8x16 inches (20x40cm) in size, then for the cover take the paper 10x4 inches (22.5x10cm) in size.

Place the open book on the paper in the middle and carefully plan top andbottom flaps of the cover, so they are equal and keep a certain margin in relationto the block of pages. When folded they do not meet the middle exactly but keepa gap in about 1/8 of the short side of the original rectangle as pictured.

Fold and unfold therectangle in half.

Elegant Book Cover © 1997 Katrin Shumakov - page 2

You have to have the 16-Page Little Book folded to start folding the cover. If using two-color paper, begin with colored side down.

This should be the result.Open the flaps out.

Fold the rectangle inhalf from right to left.

Now we have to determine the size of the book spine.Slightly squeeze the book, place it on the folded edge asshown. The size of the spine depends of the thickness andsize of paper you have used, so there is no universal recipe. However, approximately it can be in the way as pictured…Follow the next steps to make the book spine folds.

Slipcase

Book

10-Page Little Book 16-Page Little Book(with cover or not)

This slipcase is a five-sided box into which binders, books or booksets are slipped for protection. It’s an easy-to-fold model and can beused for little books presented in this publication. This design also

can be adjusted for any book or papers to store in. The model foldsfrom a square of paper.

Suggested sizes: Use a square of paper, the side of which is 1/8 less than the short side of the rectangleused for folding the little book as pictured. The calculationsare the same for both - 10-page Little Book and 16-pageLittle Book.

If say for the little book you are using a rectangle 8 x16inches (20x40 cm) in size, then for the slipcase take a7-inch (17.5 cm) square of paper.

Slipcase & Gift Bag © 1997 Katrin Shumakov - page 1

Suggested paper: regular origami paper, Chiyogami, washi, handmade paper, wrapping paper, fancy recyclingpaper.

If you fold the cover of the little book from patternedpaper, say Chiyogami, then you might want to pick upmatching plain-color paper for the slipcase, say, washipaper (Moriki Kozo in particular).

The long side of the finished slipcase will be about 1/3of the side of the original square used for the slipcaseas pictured.

Using the sameprinciple of makingthe slipcase, it’spossible to createfancy gift bags aswell.

Here is the completedSlipcase, ready toprotect your little book.

This design also can be adjusted for any book or papers to storein. To make the slipcase suitable to the size of your book, usea square of paper, appropriate to the size of your book as shown. The distance ‘a’ is the thickness of your book.

The distance ‘b’ is the height of your book. The distance ‘c’ is the width of your book.

Gift Bag

Slipcase for the little book

As the last touch, compress the sidesas shown to make theshape of the bagmore elegant.

Suggested sizes: In general, to fit your gift into the bag, takea square of paper, the side of which is 4 or 5 times bigger thanthe long side of the gift itself.

For instance, your gift is the little book in the slipcase and thelong side of the gift is 2 inches (5 cm). In this case, for the giftbag, take a 10-inch (25-cm) square of paper to fit this gift freely.

When planning paper sizes in advance before actual folding of your gift as the little book in the slipcase, then for the gift bag,

take a square of paper, the side of which is about 2 times bigger (or a bit less) than the side of the square which will be used tofold the slipcase.

Using the same principle of making the slipcase, it’s possible to createfancy gift bags. Use a square of paper; wrapping paper, fancy recyclingpaper like a poster may be a good choice for a gift bag. You will also

need 2 identical pieces of string for handles.

The long side of the finished horizontalgift bag will be about 1/3 of the side of theoriginal square, as pictured.

Suggested paper: wrapping paper, fancy recycling paper.

Move the knot under thelayers, thereby makingthe s t r ing handlesmooth. Attach thesecond string handle.

Take one piece of string and insert itbetween the layersof one flap. Then tiethe ends into a knot.

Follow the diagrams of the slipcase to fold the horizontal gift bag.

The horizontalgi f t bag isready!

For string handles, you may also useelastic bands, thinelastic hair bands inparticular.

In this case, in step 11 of theslipcase diagrams, slip thebands on the sides before

locking them. The gift bag withstring handles isready!

There is another way to attach stringhandles. You may use a hole-puncher to

make holes on f laps as shown.Working consistently with each flap, insertends of string into holes and tie them intoa knot. Repeat for another f lap.

It is possible to vary thickness, width, and height of the giftbag, changing the distances‘a’, ‘b’ and ‘c’ accordingly.

Here is the completedvertical gift bag!

The height of the finished vertical gift bag will be a bit lessthan 1/3 of the side of the original square.

To fold the vertical gift bag, follow thediagrams of the slipcase up to step 4.

Valley fold and unfoldthe left- and right-

hand edges over todetermine the desiredwidth of your bag(distance ‘b’).

Follow further steps (5 to 14)of the diagrams of theslipcase. Then attach stringhandles.

About AuthorsKatrin and Yuri Shumakov are internationally recognizedprofessional origami artists. First introduced to origami in France

in 1989, they developed this art in a heretofore unseen way. Nowresidents of Toronto, Canada and authors of many origami books, they share their art with the world.

They created the fantastic Oriland world, which consists of amazingcreations: goblins and wizards, castles of magical wonder, dragons, princesses, trees and flowers, sailing ships and sea creatures, dinosaur skeletons and so much more including elegant floralarrangements they call Oribana. Their origami designs have beenexhibited in dif ferent countr ies across the globe.

Psychologists by education, their Ph.D scientific work showedhow origami helps the development of children: creates conditionsof intensive interaction of the brain’s hemispheres and effectivelyallows development of motor skills of both hands, intellectual andcreative abilities.

Yuri and Katrin Shumakov have done Internet projects includingthis multiple award winning Oriland.com, acknowledged as a high

quality creative, educational and fun website for children andadults. They suggest that Origami is entertainment for the Soul, gymnastics for the Mind and training for the Hands.

Enjoy Oriland and see what origami can be!
