LABOUR PLEDGETheCapital Connection train, which travelseach day fromPalmerstonNorth toWellington return, will be saved by Labour, the party’s candidate forOtaki RobMcCann says.“We [Labour] believe the business case putforward byWellingtonRegional Councilmakes financial and practical sense.”He says theGovernment, through theTransport Agency, will cover half theshortfall, with the two regional councilscovering the rest between them. Therewould also someup-front capital costs.“For several years this train has beenthreatenedwith closure.“If the trainwere to bemothballed, passengers have stated that theywould nottake a replacement bus service, but woulddrive their cars fromLevin andOtaki andboard a service fromWaikanae orParaparaumu.“With the car parks already full to capacityat bothWaikanae andParaparaumu, thiswould createmayhem.“TranzMetro passengerswould findthemselves having to take earlier trainssimply to find a car park and the extrapassengers on services either side of7:30amcould find themselves standing alltheway toWellington.“The train is a vital link for the region. If wewant regional growth inOtaki, Levin andShannon then families need to know thatreliable transport toWellington is available.“The alternative is that the high levels ofunemployment affecting the northern areasof our electoratewill be even harder to bringdown.”

Primary school students puton their gummies and tookto the dirt on Thursdaymorning in a hands-on effortthat saw up to 1500 treesplanted at Queen ElizabethPark.

As part of New Zealand’sArbor Day celebrations,Queen Elizabeth Parkrangers welcomed studentsfrom Paekakariki, RaumatiSouth and Te Ra Schools toget involved with the park’sfavourite land restorationevent.

Among the annualcelebration was aneducational pit-stopdedicated to the Maori NewYear, Matariki, whichQueen Elizabeth Parkranger Brendan Bulliff saidtaught children aboutseasonal planting.

“It is about recognisingthis time of year as a goodtime to plant seeds andyoung plants, while theground is nice and wet,” MrBulliff said. “At the momentthere’s plenty of moisturefor the plants to getestablished before they haveto deal with summer.”

Having been in charge ofcore duties at the park for

over a year, Mr Bulliff’sdiverse role sees him handleplanting, restoration, andgeneral land management, including licenses andleases.

“One of the best parts ofmy role is days like today, where I work withcommunity groups, thepublic and schools.

“It’s great to see thechildren so enthusiastic.”

With all seedlings eco-sourced from the QueenElizabeth Park area, thisyear saw 12,000 plants readyfor planting, followinggrowth at an on-site

nursery.Alongside the planting,

which saw each schoolgroup spend an hour addingto the park’s thrivingplantlife, children wereshown areas where treeswere planted up to eightyears ago.

“We want to show thechildren what their effortstoday might look like in afew years’ time,” Mr Bulliffsaid.

“It’s good for them to getout and be involved innature and see what’sinvolved in restoring theenvironment.”

Book teaches childrenabout conservation

HELPING THE PLANET: Bianca Begovich and a copy of The Sea and Me.PHOTO: DAVID HAXTON / KAP2006014DHBIANCA

DAVIDHAXTON

Environmental messages arethe key ingredients in a seriesof children’s books beingcreated by Bianca Begovich.

Her first book, The Sea andMe, has just been released andwill be followed by The Treesand Me and The Earth andMe.

The first book is writtenfrom a fish’s perspective, thesecond book from a bird’sperspective and the thirdfrom a bug’s perspective.

Bianca, from Waikanae, who has been anenvironmental educator, saysshe’s seen a lot of great booksabout conservation, but not alot “that sort of put us in thestory.

“I’m trying to explain

sustainability by putting usinto the picture.

“It’s talking about people’sinteractions and doing littlethings.

“Small steps add up to bigthings.

“It’s really aboutconsciousness raising.”

She says environmentaleducation is rich learning forchildren.

“I was doingenvironmental educationbefore it was the thing to do.

“It has taken this long toget the messages in, but theexciting thing is that schoolcurriculum has it in now.

“Its been aboutincorporating those bigconcepts into children fromthe get-go.”

sustainability was a social

science, she says.“It’s about our

interactions with theenvironment.

“The planet is sustainablein itself, there are amazingsystems that renew, and it’sour interactions that seem tostuff it up and deplete it.

“It [being greedy] doesn’thave to be that way.”

The books, available inPaper Plus Coastlands, MobyDicken’s Paraparaumu Beachand Take Note Waiakane, alsocomprised activities teacherscould use among children.

“The idea is it is notsomething that would sit on ashelf, it’s something youwould refer to and buildactivities around — there’sarts links, science links,English links and more.”

Effort to reducegreenhouse gasemissions vitalDAVIDHAXTON

‘We need to be takingreally aggressive actionslike reducing emissionsby 40 per cent by the endof this decade and by 100per cent by 2060-70.’JAMESRENWICK

Climate scientist

Now is a good time for people tomake politicians aware of the needto make more effort in policy aboutreducing greenhouse gas emissions,Victoria University climate scientistJames Renwick says.

Dr Renwick, who has beeninvolved with theIntergovernmental Panel on ClimateChange, says global warming isunequivocal and mankind is playinga big part.

He says climate change was“gathering a head of steam” andwould “accelerate through thiscentury.

“For Kapiti, one of the mainissues is sea-level rise.

“Sea levels are likely to go up byat least half a metre this century, and possibly over a metre.

“Either way sea levels willprobably keep rising for at least 500years, that’s locked in alreadybecause that’s how long it takes theocean to respond.

“We’re not necessarily sayingevery house along the beachfront inKapiti will be gone, but you have tothink about it in terms of risks withstorm surges, which are going up allthe time.”

He said it was “99.9 per centcertain that greenhouse gas increaseis what is causing the changes today.

“And we know for sure because ofthe chemical signature of carbondioxide, and so on, that the extrastuff in the atmosphere comes fromburning oil and coal,” he said. “It’san open and shut case.”

Countries and individuals neededto do their bit to get on top of theproblem, he said.

“The action being taken so far isnot anywhere near what is required.

“We need to be taking reallyaggressive actions like reducingemissions by 40 per cent by the endof this decade and by 100 per cent by2060-70.

“Our government’s target is fiveper cent by the end of the decade and

there’s not really any sign on howthat’s going to happen, and theirtarget for 2050 is 50 per cent, whichsounds good, but it should be total.

“We need to be doing a lot more.”It was easy for individuals to feel

powerless, he said.“But ultimately all change comes

from individual action.“A really useful thing to do is let

your local MPs and electioncandidates know you consider thisan important issue and you want toknow what that person is going to doabout renewable energy andemissions reduction.

“Politicians do listen to thepeople, and with enough peoplemaking noise, we can get change.

“We can’t just hope for the best.”Dr Renwick is among a group of

speakers who will discussing waysto address climate change when theyattend a public meeting at KapitiCollege next month.

Others include Radio NewZealand’s voice of science VeronikaMeduna, Generation Zero’s AshleeGross, Kapiti Coast District Councilclimate change and energy advisorJake Roos, and communicationsspecialist Liana Stupples.

Before the panel discussion, therewill be a screening of Thin Ice: theinside story of climate science, adocumentary co-produced byVictoria and Oxford universities.

The event is in the college hall onWednesday, July 16 at 7pm. Goldcoin donation appreciated.

“great way to travel and engage in aculture,” the 24-year-old has beenworking two jobs in a bid to coverexpenses for the self-funded adventure.

“I was looking for volunteerplacements and saw this one, andthought it was a cool idea because it’sabout giving the children positiveactivities to do in their free time,” MissWilliams said.

“The activities are after school andwill encourage the children to keep outof trouble and build self-confidencethrough engaging with good rolemodels.”

With a set three days a week dedicatedto teaching the children how to surf, alongside other beach activity days, theprogramme will see Miss Williamsplaced in the children’s school

environment to experience hands-onhow the community runs.

When The Black Sheep AnimalSanctuary was first purchased as ahaven for mistreated and neglectedanimals in 2009, it was a bare pieceof 26-acre land boasting massivepotential.

Now home to over 160 animals, including wild kittens, injuredwildlife and ex-dairy cows, farmpigs, and battery chickens, theOtaki Forks-based sanctuary hostsa collection of shelters and fencedgrazing spots, gradually built overthe last few years to accommodatethe surge in residents.

In support of the animal welfarefarm, a new charitable shop hasopened in Otaki and is helping tofund the sanctuary’s current treeplanting requirements.

Sanctuary caretaker KateWaghorn said enhancing ofwetland and the fencing ofpastures is at the top of the farm’sto-do list, to provide shade insummer and wind and rainprotection over winter.

Having opened on May 27 thisyear, Opportunity for Animalsstems from registered charity andThe Black Sheep AnimalSanctuary founder, the AnimalProtection Society.

The second Kapiti Science Fairis underway and people areencouraged to see what thedistrict’s youngsters have beenup to.

The fair is being held in theKapiti Primary School halltoday and tomorrow, 8am-4pm.

And tonight at the school, from 4pm-7pm, is the WildScience Carnival, whichinvolves sciencedemonstrations and activities.

“It is shaping up to be a greatevent and will have a fewsurprises for those comingalong,” fair committeechairman Steve Aiken saidabout the carnival.

The science fair has involvedinviting all the schools andcolleges in the district to sendtheir best investigative projectsto be judged by scientists.

“Science fairs are wellestablished across the countryand the return here was

overdue,” Mr Aiken said.“In our second year the

number of schools entering hasmore than doubled and we’vehad entries from more than halfthe schools across the district.

“As any entry involves agood deal of initiative andeffort, mainly extra curricularto the schools’ normalprogrammes, the rising interestis pleasing.”

Mr Aiken said a major drivefor the fair was to get studentsthinking and communicating ina scientific way, which in turnintroduced them early to whatgood science looked andsounded like.

“We want grow a populationthat is more discerning and lessmanipulated by pseudo scienceand the false claims we see inadvertising.”

Mr Aiken said last year’stheme was ‘thinking like ascientist’ and this year’s is‘communicating like ascientist’.

“The uptake of concepts andlanguage at all levels has beenimpressive.

“Students are realising thatgood science is a search for thetruth.

“Proving your hypothesiswrong is not bad at all, as longas it is the truth.

“By doing good science usingthe scientific method we canadd to humanity’s body ofknowledge.

“By doing bad science orpseudo science, people justcontribute to all themisinformation that is outthere and the confusion and baddecisions that are made becauseof it.”

There are three competitionage groups — juniors Years 1-4,seniors Years 5-8 and collegeYears 9-13.

And there are five categories— the physical world, thematerial world, the livingworld, planet earth and beyond, and other.

Metering remains a minefield“The introduction of [water]metering and flow-based charging to provide economic incentivesfor consumers to becomemore efficient users, isa sensitive political and community issue. Thedebate can only be advanced if there isassurance of public ownership, guaranteedminimumsupply to all households to provide forbasic public health needs, and targetedassistance to those consumers in need”. That’s astatement fromParliamentaryCommissioner fortheEnvironment, DrMorganWilliams, is fromhisApril 2001 report ‘BeyondAgeingPipes: UrbanWater Systems for the 21st Century’.

Thirteen years later, the economic imperativeof water and the all-seeing eye ofwatermeters, sitting sentinel at almost everyKapiti household, has arrived. A journey litteredwith brokenpromises. Not least, the promise of a guaranteed400 litres per person per daymantra introducedby staff early last triennium. Amere carrot to getthe elected donkeys to commit to stepping overthe starting line, somemay say. Then therewerethe politicianswho flipflopped and thosewhoflop-flipped.Meters are nowembedded andticking their warnings before sipping bankaccounts fromJuly 1.

Changing a consumption culture, when theproduct is seen as a human right, is difficult.

Broken promises, in a situationwhere thecommunity is antagonistic, makes it harder.Wepromised two dummy readings, early in the year, before the charging regime started. This hasbeen compromised, raising the issue of the rightsof affected consumers underCommonLaw.

Two reasons for the delay. Firstly, staff withthe delegated authority to issue themeterreading contract, back inOctober 2013, delayedit. Why?Therewere at least five councillors in thenewcouncil with knownanti-watermeterpositions. Staff thought it financially prudent totest the political support. Secondly, followinganalysis of the first 3,800 trial reading in thedistrict—all Otaki properties— thosewith highreadingswere given on-site checks. Anomalieswere found. To ensure no systemic problems, likely to affect thewhole district, the posting of3,800 readings forOtaki was delayed to enabledetailed double checking.

These two delays have squeezed thewindow

for delivering the promised two trial readings forall propertieswell before July 1. This has had adomino effect.

Moving the July 1 deadline tomeetCommonLawobligationswould undermine the timing oftheAnnual Plan process and had legalimplications. Anymove to arbitrarily change thewater charges formula (50 percent fix charge 50percent volumetric charge), set to begin on July1, would breach theRatingsAct. The challengeis howdoes councilmeet its responsibilitiesunderCommonLawwithout breaching theAnnual Plan and theRatingsAct?One solutionsuggested is to keep the legislative deadlinesand charges, and introduce a one-off grantsystem, independent of the rating system, toprovide for the small, but significant, percentageof propertieswith genuine claims underCommonLaw.

Because its difficult to provewith certainty thephysical delivery of the second trial reading, there is a need for upholding the value of goodfaith. Irrespective of howonemay feel aboutwatermeters and volumetric charging, the grantsfromour public coffers are ameans to achievean equitable process. Rebuilding communityconfidence is a two-way process and good faithis onemeasure of our civic culture.

No final decision■ From Page 1are, or otherwise cover the cost of thedouble glazing,” she said.

Mr McCann said in this case he felt theagency “need to do the decent thing bythese people”.

The agency has advised they havelistened to Mr and Mrs Patten’s concerns, and are in the stages of making a finaldecision.

An agency spokesman said because thedecision is not yet finalised, and cur-rently going through the consenting pro-cess, it would be “inappropriate to com-ment.”

Big mailout as election nearsOne of this year’s biggest mailouts hasstarted, as the Electoral Commissionlaunches its campaign to make sure alleligible New Zealanders are ready totake part in the 2014 General Election onSeptember 20.

“Over three million enrolled votersare being sent an enrolment update packthis week,” says Murray Wicks, nationalmanager, Enrolment Services.

“Being correctly enrolled is critical tobeing able to vote in the general election,so check your mailbox this week foryour pack.

“This is your opportunity to checkthat your details are correct and up to

date, or to make any changes.“We ask that everyone open their

pack to ensure their details are correct, and if not, to fill in the form and send itback.”

With just three months to go untilelection day, the Electoral Commissionwants to ensure that people don’t missout on the chance to vote. “Make sureyour details are correct now – it meansthat you’ll be sent more informationabout voting closer to election day, andthat you’ll be able to vote more easily onthe day,” says Mr Wicks.

Wendy HustonChief Executive Officer,Kapiti Retirement Trust

Lodge DriveParaparaumu,

04 297 [email protected]

With the middle of the year now here andthe winter months settling in, it can be quitedepressing especially if you feel the cold. One ofthe advantages of working in an environment suchas that of the Lodge, here at Sevenoaks is theunderfloor heating. Not only do all the residents inour aged care hospital The Lodge enjoy the warmthbut with it running through our adjacent block of46 apartments, the days may be bleak outside butresidents are cosy inside.

It perhaps is one of the reasons why longevityis a common occurrence for those living in thisenvironment with the average age of residents beingin the late 80s. Yet another of our apartment residentscelebrated a 100th birthday this month – not bad tostill be living independently at this grand age.

Excellence in any field is what we love to see andthe Trust was thrilled recently when our contractcleaners,Westferry Property Services Ltd wonthe 2013 National Clean Sweep Awards. Theseare national awards run by the Building ServiceContractors of NZ. This organisation has beenrepresenting New Zealand’s building servicescontractors and promoting excellence in theindustry for more than 50 years. Its member baseincludes all of New Zealand’s major contractorswho offer a diverse range of services from cleaningto grounds maintenance, security, rubbish removaland document destruction.

Westferry Property Services Ltd are a privatelyowned NZ company specialising in the cleaning andmaintenance of commercial premises in Auckland,Hamilton andWellington. They are not a franchisecompany and part of their company ethos whichwe share, is that they value their employees greatly. They recognise the importance of staff providinga high quality, reliable and consistent service to alltheir customers.

Our congratulations go toWestferry managerLarry Taylor and his wonderful team who ensureour facilities are kept in tiptop condition. Theimportance of having an environment which notonly looks clean but smells clean cannot be over-stated, especially in a setting such as ours wherefrail residents can be especially vulnerable toillness and infection.

With the Government’s 2014 Budget nowannounced, the priorities for the coming year havebeen made clear. While it is understandable thatthe focus is on families and middle New Zealand,it is somewhat of a tragedy that while there maybe a record $15.6 billion being allocated to health, the plight of the infirm elderly has failed to attractany significant increases. The issues around payparity – whereby aged care workers who areemployed in state funded aged care facilities butnot in state funded hospitals, are paid significantlyless because they are funded less, still needs to beaddressed. The avoidance of any political party tomake this an election issue is one worth pursuingby all who have an interest in aged care.

It is worth remembering that residential aged caremay be the only viable option available to any ofus who survive into frail, old age. It then begs thequestion of all of us, if we can’t make working in theaged care sector a viable employment option, whois going to care for you?

Reports pave wayto new district planCouncil received two reports yesterdaywhich will pave the way towards a newProposed District Plan (PDP).

The goal is to develop a plan whichachieves good practice and provides forthe future economic and socialdevelopment of the district, whileprotecting the district’s unique naturalenvironment.

Development of the PDP has been onhold while two major independent reviewreports were released — the review of theexpert panel on science and assessmentsrelated to coastal erosion hazards, and thereview of the PDP itself.

Both draft reports were opened forlimited comment on matters of technicaldetail or fact from the many people whoassisted the reviews.

Three weeks were allowed forfeedback on both reports, with over 20responses received for each.

The two review panels haveconsidered the comments received andtheir final reports were presented at a

briefing for councillors yesterday.Council will decide on the

recommendations from both at itsmeeting, in particular choosing from thefour options offered by the PDP reviewand the additional coastal hazardresearch resulting from the expert coastalpanel findings.

Once council has chosen its preferredoption, staff will commit to extensive re-involvement with submitters.

“We are looking forward to achievingagreements and solutions, particularly inforums before the formal, legal ResourceManagement Act process begins again, for whichever option is chosen by councilas a way forward,” environmentalplanning manager Darryl Lew said.

Meanwhile, council is recruiting anew and experienced planning teamwhile retaining the experience of existingstaff to ensure continuity andinstitutional knowledge stay in the team. This is important so submitters don’thave to go over old ground.

WAIKANAE UPDATE

James WestburyWaikanae Community Board

A Spoonfulof Sugar

■ Governance review: The LocalGovernment Commission has indicatedtheir draft determination on GovernanceReview for the Wellington Region, whichincludes Kapiti, should be released bymid-June.

Following that will be a period of timefor public consultation to allowsubmissions from affected ratepayers andmembers of the public before thecommission makes a decision on itspreferred option against the status quo.■ Waikanae Town Centre: The council iscontinuing to refine its plans for thedevelopment of the Waikanae TownCentre. The next phase of theconsultation is planned to commenceshortly, hence it is essential to ensure youcontribute and input into this process.

The council, at this stage, is happy toreceive feedback from the initialconsultation. I would strongly encourage

you to participate. Let them know yourthoughts and views. We only get onechance. This is about transport, thearterial routes, parking, the layout of thetown and even the garden spaces in thevillage centre. How would you make it fitfor purpose?■ Consents: There is a consentapplication to put a significant, large-scale format advertising sign up at theentrance to Waikanae. What do youthink? I would encourage you to reviewthis application and make a submission.

Council stands upagainst dog attacksThe clearest evidence of why yourcouncil needs to enforce a firm policyon dog control was provided by thehorrific attack on two horses and theirriders at Paekakariki’s QueenElizabeth Park.

Karena Fellowes was riding with twodaughters when a mastiff-pitbull crossattacked their horses.

Karena and one daughter werethrown off their mounts. Subsequently,Mrs Fellowes got caught up in the reinsand dragged up the road. Her horse hadflesh the size of an egg bitten from itschest.

A park ranger had to hit the dog witha piece of wood. Fortunately a kick fromone horse stopped the attack. It does notbear thinking what could haveeventuated had it continued.

This follows the terrible incident inOtaki when two women ended up inhospital after being attacked by twodogs.

One was extensively bitten on thearms, legs and neck. A woman passingby, who came to her aid, had flesh tornfrom her thigh.

This is utterly unacceptable. Ourcommunity is entitled to walk in ourparks without fear of being attacked bydogs, or having their pets attacked.

It is for that reason we will remainfirm in our resolve to take actionagainst the dog owners who fail tocontrol their animals.

There is, however, another side toour approach. Kapiti Coast DistrictCouncil is one of the best councils in thecountry for finding homes for dogs thatare abandoned.

When dogs are found wandering,

they are held in our pound for at leasteight days — and we try to find homesfor them.

Every dog that is fit to be rehomed, and for which a new owner can befound, goes to that new home.

Between July 1 last year and June 16this year, we rehomed 31 dogs. This isthe caring side of our animal controlofficers the public does not see. All ofour animal control team are dog loversthemselves.

As a council, we provide dedicateddog parks where dogs can be let off theleash and socialise, learning to interactin a friendly way with other animals.

This is the correct balance to look forin a dog control policy. To be proactive, providing guidelines for owners toadhere to, providing areas where thedogs can be exercised, and successfullyrehoming many dogs that areabandoned.

But it also means being firm whenneeded, to protect our people in thecommunity from animals that are adanger to them and their pets.

As a dog lover myself, it is a policy Isupport. Be kind when you can, but befirm with those owners who let theirdogs endanger our people.

Nurses home becomes MenzShed

OPEN: MenzShed Otaki chairman Valdis Plato, Kapiti MayorRoss Church, Reverend Hira Royal and Otaki CommunityBoard chairman James Cootes were some of the many peopleat the official opening of MenzShed Otaki.

A former nurses’ cottage in Otakihas been converted into a place formen to share their skills, have alaugh, and work on practical tasksfor the community.

MenzShed Otaki was officiallyopened on Tuesday last week.

Otaki Community Boardchairman James Cootes declared itopen, Mayor Ross Church planted acommemorative tree, Reverend HiraRoyal gave a blessing, and OlinkaHeath sang a song before assembledguests toured the building.

The premises, at 186 Mill Rd, wasa nurses’ cottage situated next to thecentury old Cottage Hospital, whichis now the Otaki Community HealthCentre.

The idea for a MenzShed Otakiwas started by Valdis Plato.

Last year, in his role as vice-president of Probus Otaki, he looked

for another activity the club couldget involved in.

“I found there was a Menzshed inLevin and one in Waikanae.

“So I went to them and they saidthere’s some blokes from Otaki whocome here.

“I thought that was a bit crazy.“So I spent a fair bit of time

looking for premises in Otaki.“I talked to the council but they

didn’t have anything spare.”But after an article appeared in

the newspaper, Michelle Baker —who works at the health centre —contacted him and said the nurses’cottage, which was run down andlocked up for five years, could be apossible site.

“So I had a look at it and it wasideal.”

Members have been busyconverting the premises, which nowcomprise three workshops, akitchen, meeting room, toilet and

storage rooms. Mr Cootes said theopening was “another example of thegreat community we live in here inOtaki.

“I remember taking the firstenquiry from Valdis about starting itup and to see it now open is a creditto him and the committee and aninspiration to me.

“I should also mention the help ofMichelle Baker and the OtakiWomen’s Health Group, who wereinstrumental in securing thebuilding that the men have spentweeks transforming.

“It’s a great facility that willbenefit many and I’d encourageeveryone to support them wherepossible.”

■ Menzshed Otaki, which now has 26members, is open on Tuesdays andThursdays from 10am-4pm.People interested in becomingmembers are welcome to visit.

Discharged patients need better transport optionsCLOEWILLETTS

Kapiti Older Persons’ Councilrepresentative Jill Stansfieldbelieves there is still a long way togo in relation to a transport issueaffecting local elderly.

She thinks there should be amore effective way for ambulancepatients to get back to Kapiti afterbeing discharged from WellingtonHospital.

Her concern was prompted by80-year-old local Edna Sheppardwho was taken to WellingtonHospital by ambulance with asevere knee injury, but had trouble

getting home once discharged. She ended up getting a ride on

the Kapiti-based Red Crosscommunity health shuttle, although it wasn’t “mobility-impaired person friendly”.

“The problem is Kapiti doesn’thave reliable cheap return fordischarged patients, especially theelderly,” Mrs Stansfield said.

Following letters to local MPsand interim Capital and CoastDistrict Health Board chiefexecutive Debbie Chin, MrsStansfield received a responsefrom Otaki MP Nathan Guy, whoforwarded on a response from Mrs

Chin. Mrs Chin said since theincident, reminders had been sentout to hospital staff about how toaccess the available transportservices.

A copy of the hospital’s policydocuments was also included inher response, relating to availablecare for discharged Kapitiresidents.

As well as the door-to-door RedCross community health shuttle, and a free shuttle service betweenWellington Hospital and KenepuruHospital, the policy includeddetails about an after-hourshardship travel fund.

The taxi service is for Kapitipatients, “who are clinically unfitfor discharge and unable toarrange or pay for their own travelhome, after hours”.

Funded by the health board, theservice is offered on “adiscretionary basis according tocriteria”.

Mrs Chin said the hospital isalso engaged in projects aimed atstrengthening and improving the“links between hospital, home, andcommunity support services forour ageing population”.

Mrs Stansfield said she waspleased to receive a response

regarding the matter but, becausethe Kenepuru shuttle does not goall the way to Kapiti and the taxiservice is discretionary, it does notcompletely address the issue forthe coast’s elderly, who are “veryregularly discharged late at night”.

“I’ll be looking at trying to workfor a solution,” Mrs Stansfieldsaid.

Mr Guy said “Access to healthservices is hugely important for allof Kapiti’s residents.”

He made a point of stating thatthe problem does not lie in the RedCross, who run their voluntarilyservice on limited funding.

Every week we are inundated with calls for help. To be honest the volume of animals on the brink of being euthanaised is devastating. At HUHA we are all about problem solving and educating. As a community we have the ability to change the culture of how animals are kept and cared for in our society. And in many of these desperate cases changing the formula of care and instilling a little common-sense is all it takes. Often if you look at a “bad” “naughty” or “out of control” animal there is merely an inexperienced, misinformed or overwhelmed owner involved. The animal isn’t bad, it may be living inthe wrong environment or its caregiver may have failed to give it sound direction. It is HUHA’s mission to stop the suffering. The suffering of owners who are out of their depth and miserable, and the suffering of animals who are living on the edge due to an inappropriate situation stemming from ignoranceand or misinformation. So the good news is that HUHA’s track record to date is proof that to every problem there is a workable solution. Now all we need is to work some of that HUHA know how and magic into every home in every community in NZ…..and that’s just what we plan to do!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Voice of reasonAt last a voice of reason regardingthe removal of overgrown anddamaged trees in this region. Con-gratulations to David Haxton forhis concise and clear accountWednesday June 11.

The council acted disgracefullyin the recent Standen case andinstead of persecuting ratepayers, they should be supporting them, especially after seeing the effects offallen trees and storm damage inAuckland recently affecting thecity and environs on a nationalscale.

One of the major reasons forpeople moving into retirementhomes is that they can no longermaintain their gardens. Not somuch by health issues, but thecost, and especially the removal oftrees, rare or otherwise, but thesurgeons.

Thank you again Kapiti Newsfor reporting news as it really is.

IRENE TODDWAIKANAE

Lack of accessI live in Waikanae, east of therailway line. Three weeks ago, myhusband suffered a heart attackand required an ambulance toWellington Hospital. With varioushealth issues, this was not his firstcall for emergency assistance.

On Sunday evening (15 June), Iarrived at Waikanae’s ElizabethStreet level crossing to find thetraffic backed up because an excep-tionally long goods train wasblocking the line.

It was impossible to get to orfrom SH1 by either vehicle or foot.

This situation lasted about anhour and was extremely frustrat-ing. And given my appreciation ofthe need for accessible emergencyservices at all times, it was alsofrightening to realise that thosewho live on this side of the tracksare completely at the mercy of fate, given that there is only this oneegress from the east.

While the current governmentis fixated on its “roads of nationalsignificance” project and the sub-sequent expressway it is deter-mined to impose upon ourtownships, surely the basic neces-sity is that all residents of ourcommunities have unrestrictedaccess to emergency facilities.

It is imperative that either anunderpass is created for ElizabethStreet traffic, or else an additionalroad is created — the north end ofHuia Street being the obvious area.

The Kapiti Coast earthquakehazard maps on the KCDC websiteshow the highest risk area ofWaikanae to be east of the railwayline.

It is frightening to think thatthis district could be completelycut off from assistance.

It has already been proven thata train can block the railwaycrossing for any sort of reason and

cut off vital access to and from theeast. Before undertaking any otherroading project, both the govern-ment and KCDC need to ensurethat an alternative to the ElizabethStreet level crossing is available.Nathan Guy, Gerry Brownlee andKCDC, please work together toexpedite this matter.

It is extremely urgent!BLANCHE CHARLES

Water chargingRob McCann’s letter of 18 Juneregarding water charging is wrongon many points.

“…council will be taking moremoney off you each year…” Actu-ally, under the new scheme, morehouseholds will be paying aboutthe same or less for water.

We have always paid for treatedwater through our rates.

The user pays model is thefairest, most equitable way ofsupplying water and will sig-nificantly benefit one and twomember households, which makeup more than 60% of our district.

“…many will be unable to affordto replace these items [with energyefficient water appliances]… ”People don’t have to buy expensiveappliances to reduce water use.

Things like using wateringcans/handheld hoses on gardensinstead of sprinklers, washing carswith bucket loads rather than ahose and putting dishwashers/washing machines on only whenfull can make a real difference.

For more vulnerable membersof our community money has beenside aside to make sure no one isleft to struggle. This finance hasbeen allocated for at least 18months.

“…an ideal time to have [com-municated about water charging]was missed at the sustainable homeand garden show.”

Council had a huge tent dedi-cated to water matters at this showcontaining displays, all kinds ofinformation and helpful people totalk to.

“If I were a landlord I wouldhave expected several years’ warn-ing for such an important issue…”Council has been communicatingpublicly about paying for water viameters since June 2012. It’s nothard to charge tenants for theirwater use. Standard governmenttenancy agreements include anobligation for tenants to pay formetered water.

Finally, council will not profitout of this new charging scheme.Water charges cover the costs ofmaintaining the network, treatingwater and delivering it to people’staps.

Any surplus or deficit will betransferred to the following year’swater activities.

ROSS CHURCHKAPITI DISTRICT MAYOR

DebtsminisculeThe Notes from a Corner Dairy

June 18 highlights the fact thatlocal body debt is minuscule whencompared to government and pri-vate debt.

Long term debt reduces therates currently payable but, ofcourse, increases the long termcost. The alternative to debt isinstant payment. I estimate thatrates would have increased by 46percent over the period of con-struction if the aquatic centre hadbeen paid for in the years that itwas built.

The KCDC has appropriatelimits on its debt levels, and it hasa great credit rating of A+. No debtis not a good policy for a council, and the sector was berated in theShand inquiry 2007 for having toolittle debt and consequentlyrestricting development.

Debt creates intergenerationalequity.

The only consideration in mymind is whether or not it supportsa worthwhile activity.

TREVOR DANIELLKAPITI COAST GREY POWER

Scary figuresRecently I attended two meetingswhere political activist MurrayHorton spoke about the state ofNew Zealand’s economy. Hisorganisation, Campaign AgainstForeign Control of Aotearoa putsout a magazine called ForeignControl Watchdog which I recom-mend to readers.

The information he gave uspaints a very different picture tothe one being propagated by thegovernment. For instance totalpublic and private debt in NewZealand is now over $250 billion.

Similarly the degree of owner-ship by overseas people of ourshare market has increased fromunder 3 percent in the early 1980sto over one third (33 percent).

Under the Prime Minister’s taxchanges of 2010, the CEO of West-pac increased his weekly takehome pay by a massive $5358.37ceach week! (figures from Dr Rus-sell Norma, Greens executiveassistant.

Truly, his tax changes favouredthe wealthy, to a significant extent.

STEPHEN COTTERALLOTAKI

ShowconspiracyUntil fluoride opponents like PeterDaniel and Jenny Cronin can showme evidence that the Ministry ofHealth and the New Zealand Den-tal Association are part of a globalconspiracy to poison us, instigatedby David Icke’s lizard race, then Iwill continue to support the fluori-dation of our drinking water.

ANDREWWATTERSON

RAUMATI

Real leadershipUnfortunately only two council-lors, Scott and Gurunatham, showed real leadership and integ-rity when it came to deciding onwhether or not to continue fluori-dation. Most of the others were leftfeeling unsure about the safety oreffectiveness of the practice butinstead of deciding to put the safetyof the residents above all else, theychose to put politics first.

Cr Mike Cardiff said he wasvoting against his personalopinion and that if he was offered aglass of unfluoridated water and aglass of fluoridated water he wouldchoose the unfluoridated water. But he chose to continue fluori-dation. Why?

Cr Holborrow thought thatsince councillors had previouslydecided the issue should be acentral government one, decidedthey should continue since theywould be required to do so if itwere a central government one.

However, she failed to see thatthe drive to push responsibilityonto central government was socouncillors could absolve them-selves of the responsibility.

By voting to continue, council-lors have now made a consciousdecision to accept responsibility.

Residents should ask them-selves, if fluoridation is such agreat thing why is that neither thecouncil nor the government wantto be responsible for it?

Those councillors who haveunderstood that fluoridation doespose risk and that dental fluorosisis evidence of harm, should moveto dramatically reduce fluoridelevels or resolve to put the issueback on the table in six monthstime. In the meantime parentsshould be warned not to use the tapwater for making up infant for-mula.

For the peopleParts of Canterbury endureearthquakes, and repeatedfloodings, with no end in sight.

Those poor people should befully bought out so they can startagain. No cavilling, no questions, just do it. I am ashamed of ourgovernment pouring millions ofratepayer money into sport, whiletheir ratepayers battle on inunavoidable and, frankly, unim-aginable hardship.

What happened to “Govern-ment by the people for the people?”

JO MURPHYWAIKANAE

High debtLawrence Yule president of LGNZ(18/6/14) stated that the vast major-ity of councils scored well in debtlevels relative to assets except for

Kapiti. He advanced the proposi-tion that in this respect bothcentral government and the busi-ness sector compared much worse.

A district council it is quitedifferent to any commercial com-pany in that the bulk of its’ assetshave no market value and cannotbe sold to repay debt. The reasonfor this is that the value ofinfrastructure and utilities is anintegral part of the land value ofevery property in the district.

These assets are a necessaryfacility to every property and werecreated, maintained and servicedby ratepayer funding.

Further public debt is securedby debenture against the rateincome and consequently againstthe property of every ratepayer.

The terms of the debentureobliges council to obtain paymentfrom ratepayers and in the event ofnonpayment may force a compul-sory sale of the ratepayer’s prop-erty.

Consequently the comparisonof debt to equity is nonsense.KCDC has the highest level of debtper ratepayer in the Wellingtonregion and unlike the othercouncils has no investments.Theimportant issue is affordability.

ALDOUS MACIVORWAIKANAE

High salariesIn his Corner Dairy dated June 18,Guru states that “22 of our staff getpaid more than $100,000 each”.Surely that can’t be right. While Ialready know that PatrickDougherty, our town clerk, isgrossly overpaid. Twenty two onsix figure salaries — come on.

Now I have no problem withgood staff getting paid good moneybut to offset the $100,000 plus paidto this group of staff, council musthave a lot of workers on or justabove the minimum wage.

No doubt these workers mustfeel great and highly motivatedknowing their managers are earn-ing more than $100,000 while theystruggle to pay their bills.

Twenty two — that’s obscene, 5or 6 maybe?

HAMISH FRASEROTAKI

Cr Gurunathan responds: Thefigure is right. It’s based on data, asof 30 June 2013, collated by theTaxpayers Union from councilsannual reports. They checked andsent it back to the 67 councils toreview before publishing. KCDCregistered 292 staff with 22 earningmore than $100,000.

To put it into regional contextLower Hutt had 400 staff with 29 inthe above $100,000 or more bracket.Porirua 321 staff with 30 in thatbracket.Upper Hutt 136 staff and 11in the bracket. Wellington 1,152staff with 169 in the bracket.Readers should Google ratepayersreport.co.nz and check out thecomparative data for themselves.

Patient traveloptions limitedSome of you might recall thearticle in the Kapiti News aboutthe difficulties experienced byone of our older residentsrelating to transport optionsavailable for discharged patientsfrom Wellington Hospital’sAccident and EmergencyDepartment back to the KapitiCoast.

Suffice to say that thisrepresented the tip of an iceberg.

While it is correct to say thatthere are several transportoptions available, only one(apart from commercialservices) is available duringwhat might be called afterhours. I am referring to theKapiti Carers Society Inc whooffer Kapiti Coast patient careby transporting clients to andfrom medical appointmentsfrom Waikanae andParaparaumu to medicaldestinations throughout theregion. They operate on a kohabasis. But — how many readersknew about this service?(Contact 293 6349 for furtherdetails).

The Red Cross also operate ashuttle service betweenWaikanae and Wellingtonhospitals via Kenepuru — againon a koha basis. Although this isan excellent service for patientswho are relatively fit andmobile, it is not a disabled-person-friendly vehicle. Theircontact is 2984316.

Most of us will be aware ofthe Kenepuru Hospital toWellington Hospital shuttleserevice that operates on weekdays between 7am and 6pm,between — yes — Kenepuru and

Wellington hospitals. This begsthe question — would it bepossible to extend that serviceup to the Kapiti Coast?

As a point of interest there isan after hours hardship travelfund for patients in Kapitidistrict, but this is adiscretionary fund, thereforenot all discharged patients willqualify. Taxis operate thisservice from WellingtonHospital to Kapiti.

And for discharged patientsawaiting transport there is atransit lounge but this is onlyopen between 8am and 6pm! Inall fairness I should add thatthere is also the short stay unitwhere patients can beaccommodated overnight.

Again, to be fair, CCDHB iscurrently holding meetingswhere extra care needed by frailelderly patients is beingdiscussed, and I am privileged tohave been invited to join thisgroup. This is a big step forward, and at some stage I hope thatthere will be the opportunity forour community to have someinput, so — we need to thinkahead about what serviceswould best suit our needs so wecan contribute these ideas if theopportunity rises.

‘She’ll be right’ no goodwhen it comes to healthMaking men aware of the their health issuesis a big concern not just in New Zealand butaround the world. Kiwi males have tended tomaintain the ‘she’ll be right attitude’ to theirown health, so with the increasing obesityepidemic and more premature deathsthrough heart disease men’s health isbecoming a serious issue. Men have to makea change for the good of the nation, I’m notsaying women can’t do everything but werewould the All Blacks be without big stronghealthy men?

Domen neglect their health because:■ Their jobs keep them active?■ There not grossly overweight?■ Too busy working?■ They’re scared of gyms and vegetables. . . and change?■ They’re just pig-headed?

In my opinion I think most men don’t thinkthey need to exercise, eat healthy, or drinkplenty of water because they are not fat, littledo they know that skinny men die of heartdisease as well. All males have to take a stepback and a look at their lives, evaluate theirwork, family, hobbies and lifestyle and workout what is the most important to them. Nowyou have worked out what is important couldyou enjoy any of it without your health? No isthe answer.

Two weeks ago all around New ZealandMen’s Health Week was promoted with TV,radio and newspaper advertising tellingmales to take an online health test and/or seetheir doctor for a check up. If you had youreyes closed or just brushed the week off assomething for old men, I’ve put togethersome of my ownmen’s health questions for

you to answer.1. Are you able to run around with your

children or grandchildren without getting outof breath after the first minute. Yes/no

You should be able to run around withyour children it’s called being a good dad/grandad. If you can’t then you need to start abasic exercise regime building up some basecardiovascular fitness.

2. Can you can’t see your old fella whenyou look down in the shower? Yes/no. Whatabout if you bend over a little, yes/no

The doctor will use a measurement of100cmwaist circumference to determinewhether you are a health risk. I use thesimple ‘can you see you dickie doo’measurement, either way you need toimprove your diet and start an exerciseregime to start losing some body fat aroundyour middle.

3. Do you have three or four alcohol freedays a week? Yes/no. Do you smoke, yes/no

I’m not asking you to change your life andbecome amonk, I’d just like you to makesome small changes for the better. Increaseyour alcohol free days and take action to stopsmoking.

Men’s health is serious, so take a standand make some changes for the sake of allmankind.

Bird book beautifully illustrated

NEW RELEASE: Michael Peryerwith his latest bird book. PHOTO:

DAVID HAXTON / KAP170614DHBIRDS

DAVIDHAXTON

Waikanae birdman MichaelPeryer’s second book will belaunched next month.

Entitled Whatever Next! MoreTales from Waikanae Estuary, the 90-page book is full ofinteresting stories and stunningphotographs about birdlife in theestuary as well as otherinteresting anecdotes.

The book, which featuresstunning photography fromGavin Klee and Roger Smith, has39 interesting stories including alot from his popular monthlynewsletter.

There’s a story about ablackbird feeding a skylark, efforts to save a royal spoonbillcovered in ticks, how a pied shagallowed its throat to be strokedby a human, the day a herd ofcows visited the estuary, thediscovery of fernbird, a womanwho feeds eels in her backyard, asea bird rescue featuring stormhit broad billed prions, to a lovestory about a black swan andwhite goose.

One of the stories features alittle boy called LachlanMarshall.

“He rang me up and said therewas this bird going round andround in the water and red billedgulls were dive bombing it.

“The black backed gull couldhave had nylon or something onit.

“The boy asked if I could comeand save it and could he give mea hand if he put his wetsuit on.

“We went down to the bankwith Lachlan holding my handand slowly waded out to the birdwhich was in the middle of thebackwater.

“The water got deeper and it

was slippery so the little manheld on tightly.

“I was a little worried becauseif I slipped he would end upunder the water.

“I let him go and left him so Icould throw a towel over thebird, then took his hand againand brought the bird back toshore.

“We had a good look at it butcouldn’t find any injury orentanglement.

“We concluded it may havejust been sick, maybe old age, sowe put it back into the water.

“I told Lachlan that that’s theway of things in the wild.”

Mr Peryer was thrilled withthe book.

“And especially because mywife took the front cover photo, that gives me a few browniepoints.”

He has been running birdtours around the estuary for thelast 10 years and has gathered awide knowledge of the 66different species of bird thatenjoy the estuary environment.

Porirua in running to join internet fast lane

SUPPORT YOUR NEIGHBOUR: Kapiti mayor Ross Church, second from left, and some other local body leaders in the Wellington region, aregetting in behind Porirua’s bid in the Gigatown competition. PHOTO: MARK TANTRUM / KAP230614SPLMAYORS

A number of political leaders inthe Wellington region, includingKapiti mayor Ross Church, aregetting behind a bid for fast, affordable internet in Poriruathat will offer benefits for thewhole region.

Porirua is the only NorthIsland town in the running tomake the finals in the Chorus-ledGigatown competition.

Winning Gigatown will enablePorirua and the region’sbusinesses and families to bebetter connected with oneanother and the rest of the world, says Porirua mayor Nick Leggett.

“If Porirua comes on-streamwith gigabit speeds this couldopen the door for very fastregional internet.

“With 50 per cent of our peopletravelling to Wellington to workevery day and 21 per cent of thePorirua workforce coming fromthe Hutt, there would be hugebenefits if people could workmore from home.

“It would take cars off theroads and improve theenvironment, open up work-lifebalance opportunities, and couldeven lead to more people usingpublic transport if hi-speedwireless was made availablealong the rail corridors.

“The sky’s the limit really.”He says UFB will create a

closer, tightknit community ofinternet specialists.

“This is attractive from abusiness perspective having a lotof people in a common area, better able to collaborate andmove large amounts ofinformation in real time betweeneach other and out to the world.”

He says the economicadvantages are great, with part ofthe winning package including

$200,000 toward an incubatorproject for new startupcompanies.

“This will turn the city into ahot-bed of innovation; attractinghigh-tech companies offeringmore jobs and new careers. That’sgoing to help the whole region —not just Porirua.

Educational opportunities, especially for young people arethere too.

“In Porirua we haveproportionally the youngestpopulation in New Zealand with40 per cent under the age of 25 and25 per cent under the age of 15.

“By empowering our youngpopulation with the prospect ofgreater and better online learningwe can fuel the growth of theentire region with a digitallyliterate workforce.”

He welcomes the support of

Wellington Mayor Celia WadeBrown, Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace,Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy,Kapiti Mayor Ross Church andGreater Wellington RegionalCouncil chairwoman FranWilde.

“Winning the ChorusGigatown competition willtransform our region’s economyand the lives of our families.”

Top partnership for big outingTwo of New Zealand’s best-known poetsJenny Bornholdt and Greg O’Brien will beguests at this month’s Matariki Poets to thePeople outing.

The midwinter event is taking place onSunday at Valhalla, Raumati South from4pm to 6pm, with a collection of worksfrom the married pair, who havedeveloped a creative partnership over theyears.

Mrs Bornholdt, an author of ninepoetry collections, is a poet laureate andthe recipient of many awards for her work.

Poets to the People’s Michael Keith saidMrs Bornholdt’s poems “portray a specialway of seeing and paying attention to theworld — apparently simple, but revealingmore and more layers and depths as youspend time with them.”

A reviewer of Summer said “Jennyallows her poems to immerse themselvesin marvelous details of everyday life.Constantly through the years she hasserved up poems rich in anecdote andincident.”

Mr O’Brien, an accomplished painteras well as writer, has illustrated much ofMrs Bornholdt’s work, with the OxfordCompanion to NZ Literature saying“critics have noted the sense of ongoingconversation occurring between (thepair’s) respective collections.”

“Greg’s poetry draws on his immersionin history and art — he is a noted andhighly versatile writer on cultural life aswell as a poet, and his personal experienceand beliefs,” Mr Keith said.

“He explores other ways of seeing,

sometimes in surreal terms, and is deeplyinterested in the creative process thatexpresses itself in all forms of life, not onlyin human invention.”

Both recently made members of theorder of New Zealand for their services toliterature and the arts, the pair’s Kapitiappearance will likely be a popular one, soearly arrival is advised.

“Karen from Valhalla is also offering aspecial midwinter dinner after the event, which people will need to book for on 049052010.”

Upcoming Poets to the People sessionsinclude a presentation from noted poet, novelist and creative entrepreneurAdrienne Jansen on July 27, followed byguest poet Laureate Vincent O’Sullivan onAugust 31.

Not so strange attractionREVIEW

■ MOVIE - The Face of Love■ TIME - 1h 32m PG■ STARRING - Annette Bening, Ed Harris,RobinWilliams, JessWeixler■ WHERE - Shoreline CinemaWaikanae

Five years after the death of her belovedhusband Garrett (Ed Harris), Nikki (AnnetteBening) meets a man who seems his exactduplicate.

Not only does this stranger possess thesame deeply lined face and startling blueeyes, he also shares Garrett's kindness, humour, and passion for art. And yet he is astranger. Romance blossoms between Nikkiand this alluring doppelganger, but she can'tbring herself to tell him the truth about whatdrew her to him. So she hides her photos andprevents him from meeting friends andfamily.

Still, she can't resist taking him to all theold haunts. It isn't a question of if the truthwill come out, but when. Arie Posin directsthis emotionally thorny drama about how wecope with loss, live in the moment andultimately move forward.

He has said the idea for The Face of Lovecame when his own mother saw a look-alike

of her late husband on the street one day; themovie follows through on what Mom did not.

It’s a fascinating notion: What would youdo? Would you go after him? Would you sleepwith him?

The director creates a casual world ofupper-middle-class privilege beneath whichdemons lurk, and the film’s chief fault is thatit’s unsure how far or even whether to letthose demons out.

This is a discreet movie about ragingpsychosis.

‘This task wouldsuit someone who

but it’s notessential.’MARGARET BROWN

A volunteer position as regionalrepresentative of theShakespeare Globe Centre hasbecome available, as currentrepresentative Margaret Brownleaves the role after five years.

The Shakespeare GlobeCentre, the body that organisesthe University of Otago SheilahWinn Shakespeare Festival, requires a representative for2015, for a festival in its 23rd yearin New Zealand.

With up to 100,000 pupilshaving taken part in the festivalduring that time, Mrs Brownsaid it is hugely rewarding “tosee pupils acting, directing, composing and coming to gripswith the wonder ofShakespeare’s stories, and hisgenius with language.”

“The whole festival, culminating in the NationalFestival at Queen’s BirthdayWeekend, involves schools fromBluff to the Cape and is run on avoluntary basis, and funded byfundraising,” Mrs Brown said.

Working alongsideprominent New Zealand actors,

with course teachers includingTim Spite and Stuart Devinie, the regional representative willhave a hands-on approach in“keeping Shakespeare relevantto our young people.”

“This task would suitsomeone who has been inteaching or involved in drama, but it’s not essential. The festivalis growing and needs help fromanyone with an interest and whois willing to give their time.”

Memorialisationby Andrew Malcolm

Society has used Memorials in varying waysto honour life since time began.

With about 80% cremation in this region, many people simply plan to scatter the ashesafter cremation, but in the end most needa place to go, a special place to remember, and usually end up putting up a permanentmemorial of some sort.

Over 20 years ago the cremation wall atParaparaumu Beach cemetery ran out ofroom and it was decided to place memorialplaques around an existing rose garden.

This idea caught on so quickly that withinonly a few months the garden plaques werefull and a new garden was needed. All thecemeteries in the district now have gardenswith plaques for people to either place theashes or simply have a special place to cometo.

For more information about memorials pleasecontact a Funeral Home listed who can referyou to a company that can help.

Excruciating start ends ultramarathonJo Johansen, the female winner of the recent Tarawera as well asThe Hillary ultra marathons in New Zealand, went to Australia totake part in The North Face 100 ultramarathon in New South Waleslast month. But soon after the start she had to stop and was quicklytaken to hospital. Jo explains the lead up to the event, whathappened to her, and some reflections.

My first DNF[did notfinish]

Thosethree letterssoundhaunting andlook sodisappoint-ing.

I put big expectations onmyself for this race. Mytraining load was high, as itturned out, way too high. I hadbuilt my own homemade stepthat sat in the backyard andwould use it daily. I would alsorun 194 steps on a bush track inmy runs during the week. If youdon’t know, The North Face hassteps throughout the course. Iwanted to get sick of stepsbecause I knew that’s what itwould feel like on race day. Iwas hammering the training, twice a day seven days a week, with the vision of winning. Iwould tell myself “this is what Ihave to do to win — train thehardest and I will perform thebest”.

Little did I know I wasforgetting a major rule for peakperformance: rest, recovery, repair.

I never gave myself a day off.I barely stretched and I wasalways limping, sore, tired, grumpy and stressed out aboutthe smallest things. Theexpectation of the raceblindsided me into ignoringsymptoms of overtraining andignoring my body screaming atme to rest. I ignored the advicefrom friends, family and otherrunners telling me to slowdown, telling me that I wasdoing enough and that my bodyneeded to rest and repair, otherwise training is wasted.

I wish now that I hadlistened, hindsight is a greatthing.

In the days leading up to therace, I decided to get a deeptissue massage for the firsttime. I do wonder if this was asmart idea, releasing toxinsafter all the hard training then

flying on a plane.I was feeling exhausted and

done with running. I gavemyself three days to taperprobably, not a smart ideaagain. I had no idea really totaper I just go with what hasworked for me in the past.Going into the Tarawera I tooktwo days off from running butmy mileage was a little less. Theday before the race I felt unwelland was experiencing back painand headaches that wouldn’t goaway. Exhausted, fatigued andI’m not happy or excited aboutthe race. Driving from Sydneyto Katoomba, it was amazing towatch the landscape change soquickly. From bustling city to,what looked like to me, a grandcanyon of native Australianbush, tall gum trees, massivecliffs, and a beautiful sunsetting clear night. You knewyou were in a different country. It was unreal. Katoomba isthriving with people and traffic, and the accommodation is soldout. I thought the Taraweraregistration expo was big butThe North Face wasoutstanding.

I attend the athletes Q&Aforum, meet the other runnersand we are all buzzing. RogerHanny takes the forum, hereminds me of Kerry Suter inthe way he ran Q&A atTarawera, very funny andenergetic. I register for the race, get the mandatory gear checkedoff and head off for an earlynight.

I wake up race morningfeeling good and ready but as Iwalk up to the start line I get

sharp pain in my lower back. Itgets my attention but goes awayeventually. I move to the frontof the start line, my plan is tofind Nuria Picas and stay withher. She looks psyched andconfident and I’m excited to bein the same race as her.

The race starts and everyonetakes off and I find a position toget comfortable in. I positionmyself right behind Nuriafocusing on her form and speedand feeling comfortable with it.

I’m thinking to myself thatthis is going to be a great race. Iget 4.5km in, heading downfrom the outback onto furbersteps. I feel tightening in mylegs. It gets stronger andstronger and it stops mecompletely on the steps. I can’tmove, my legs have totallyseized, locked up and notbending at all. I have no ideawhat’s happening to me, itcouldn’t be cramp, I never havecramp. I’ve just had a salt pilland it’s only the start of therace. I think to myself, what thehell is going on? I’m prettyupset and angry at this point. Iaccept I can’t be up the frontanymore, but I want to finishthis race.

The pain is excruciating, each step hurts. I try to keepgoing. I can only manage acouple of steps before I need tostop. Tim Day passes me andreassures me that I will comeright and I will try to walkwhatever this is out. All I keptsaying to myself was keepwalking, keep walking it willcome right, it has to.

Massaging and trying to

stretch did nothing, my muscleswouldn’t give. I had so manyrunners stopping and trying tohelp me. Thanks to all thosepeople who stopped out of theirway to help me. I arrive atcheckpoint one in two and halfhours (10.5k). I go to the toilet todiscover I’m peeing blood and Iknow my race is over.

If I hadn’t gone to the toilet, Iwould have continued the raceas I was convinced I wouldimprove if I kept moving. Ididn’t know what was going onwith my body. All sorts offeelings entered my mindrealising it was the end of therace for me. I felt ashamed, likea failure, and like I had letmyself and others who havesupported me to get to this race, down.

At the checkpoint I am seenby a medic and then transportedto Katoomba Hospital. Oncethere, I am asked manyquestions by doctors who seemunsure about what could begoing on. Electrolyteimbalance, dehydration andsome sort of extreme cramping.

It is my brother who informsthem that I never rest and havebeen over training, and that Ihad been in A & E withdehydration back in December.I get hooked up to an IV drip andheart monitor and blood testsare taken. An hour later theresults are in and the doctortells me I am really sick. Hediagnoses me withRhabdomyolosis. A diagnosis ofRhabdo as they call it, is madewhen creatine phosphokinase(CPK) levels rise above 10,000

u/l, well above the upper limitof 200 u/l of normal range. CPKis an enzyme found insidemuscle cells, so when musclesare damaged, this enzyme isreleased into the bloodstream.CPK is not harmful but used as asurrogate marker of myoglobinrelease. Myoglobin is a big redprotein that can block orcrystallize within the kidneys. This can lead to acute kidneyinjury and renal failure ifsevere. So the red I was seeingat checkpoint one wasn’tactually blood but myoglobin.Rhabdo literally means“dissolution of skeletal muscle”and is common and well-knownconsequence of strenuousphysical activity. Ultra runningand racing in particularrequires heavy skeletal musclerecruitment and places hugedemands on the body. Thesedemands are well above andbeyond what is typical ofnormal daily training. Thereare a number of factors that canincrease your risk of gettingRhabdo: extremes of hydration,non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)and analgesic use, heat stressand recent viral/bacterialinfection. Rhabdo is also foundin crushing situations, whenpeople get stuck of pinned underbuildings or anything massivein weight. With me, the fact Iwas training seven days a week, twice a day for months andmonths with no rest or recoveryand I was dehydrated, causedmy muscles to breakdown.

Because I had won pastevents, training the way Ialways had, I thought I must bedoing something right. So I justkept running with what I wasdoing with no down time. As itturns out my way was not theright way. You live and learn. So now I’m getting out of themindset that more is betterwhen actually less and rest isbest. It is easy to get lost inexpectations and pressure, andI need to remember why Iactually love to run.

Kapiti boomsaccording tonew figuresAn organisation formed topromote, develop and coordinatethe tourism, hospitality and retailsectors in Kapiti is encouraged byrecent positive signs in the localeconomy.

Manaaki Kapiti was formed lastyear with members from Kapititourism, retail and hospitalitysectors.

Loosely translated ashospitality, manaakitanga plays akey role in Maori society andinspires the New Zealand visitorexperience. It sums up the act ofwelcoming and sharing.

Chairman of the organisation,well-known local tourismoperator, John Barrett, points to anumber of indicators whichdemonstrate real progress is beingmade in the local tourism/hospitality economy.

Figures released by StatisticsNew Zealand show the numbers ofpeople staying in commercialaccommodation in the Kapiti areafor April were up 40 percent on theprevious year.

“While there are a number offactors behind this, including thefact Easter and Anzac weekendswere close together this year it’sgreat nonetheless and is a clearindicator of an increasing interestin tourism in the area,” Mr Barrettsaid.

He also pointed to a recentsurvey of local airport userscarried out by Kapiti Coast Airportand The Kapiti Company.

“With more than 700 responses, the survey has been a great successand given customers anopportunity to have their sayabout local air services again thisyear.

“Passenger numbers on theAuckland, Christchurch and otherlocal flights are steadilyincreasing.

“It’s often very difficult to get aseat on the peak morning andevening flights.”

The expressway development isclearly giving a boost to the localeconomy as well, he said.

Coastlands manager JanForrest echoes Barrett’s view onpositive indicators with the Kapitiretail sector showing stronggrowth currently.

“Much is made of thetremendous growth in Aucklandand Christchurch but Kapiti hasbeen seeing positive growth forsome time,” she said.

“Coastlands Shoppingtown is atits most tenanted for many years.

“Currently we have only oneempty tenancy and we have newbuilding activity for a number ofkey tenants including Briscoes andThe Warehouse.

“Overall Coastlands is tradingahead of this time last year. Areassuch as the food court, cafes andeateries have shown positivegrowth for the past 12 months.

“Some months have beenstronger than others but overallthis sector is up 11.6 percent on lastyear. These kinds of businesses areabout discretionary spending.

“When people are treatingthemselves it’s a good indicator ofconfidence.”

Barrett sees Manaaki Kapiti asproviding a voice for the tourism, hospitality and retail sectors of theKapiti district. We want to be in aposition to advocate for theirinterests to a range of groupsincluding local, regional andcentral government. We will beinvolved in the planning processesand we aim to be the group youcome to when you are developingbusiness and opportunities in thesector.”

The key businesses currentlyinvolved in Manaaki Kapiti will bemeeting shortly to develop thegroup and to expand themembership to include the widestpossible involvement by localtourism, hospitality and retailorganisations.

Gas plan wins eco-award

PROUD MOMENT: Eco design adviser Richard Morrison, senior climate change and energy advisorJake Roos and mayor Ross Church receive an environment award from Environment Minister AmyAdams. PHOTO: NEIL MACKENZIE / KAP180614SPLAWARD

Council has won yet anothermajor national environmentalaward for reducing greenhousegas emissions.

The 2014 Green RibbonAwards were announced by theMinister for the EnvironmentAmy Adams, in Wellington onMonday.

The award recognised thecouncil’s success in reducingits absolute greenhouse gasfootprint by 48 per cent since2010 through a range of energyand waste minimisationinitiatives. These includereduction of organic waste tolandfill and the conversionfrom diesel to wood fuel insewage drying.

There has been a 26 per centenergy reduction at Waikanaepool through bettermanagement practices and newtechnology. Use of heat pumpheat recovery at CoastlandsAquatic Centre condenseswater vapour from the exhaust

air stream. This producesaround 3000 litres of water a daythat can be recycled back intothe pool.

The programme has alsodelivered significant economicbenefits, with council’s energycosts in 2012-13 reduced by morethan $400,000 due to the energysaving programme.

Mayor Ross Church says it isa huge achievement forcouncil’s environmentalcredentials to be recognised fora third time in the first sixmonths of 2014.

“I’m very proud of the effortsof council staff, who are veryfocused on energy saving, which is giving us great results.

“We won double honours atthe 2014 Energy Efficiency andConservation Authority(EECA) for our proactiveapproach to energy andengagement with thecommunity to improve theenergy efficiency of people’s

homes and reduce waste.“We were also highly

commended in the energymanagement category of theNew Zealand Property Councilawards.

“In addition, our watersupply project won the NewZealand Planning Institute’sRodney Davis Project Award inApril and has just beenannounced as a finalist in theLocal Government NewZealand Excellence Awards.

“Now, the Green RibbonAward caps off an outstandingsix months, confirming theeffectiveness of council’sresponse to climate change, which is one of the mostsignificant challenges facingNew Zealand.

“We are committed toreducing our own impact aswell as inspiring change andresilience, both in our localcommunity and for othercommunities in New Zealand.”
