  • CLUTCH HITS MISSING IN LOSS TO TIGERS--Kansas Citys shot at catching Detroit in the A.L. Central took another hit yesterday as the Royals dropped a 3-2 decision to fall to 2 1/2 games behind the frontrunners with just over a week to play in the season...as far as good news on Saturday, all three clubs vying for the two Wild Card spots lost, as the As and Mariners joined KC in falling to their opponents, leaving the Royals a half-game back of Oakland for the first spot and a half-game ahead of Seattle, though that half game will come into play tomorrow when the Royals finish up the suspended contest in Cleveland, trailing 4-2 in the 10th inning...as for yesterday, KC mustered up 11 hits, but the clubs month-long struggles with runners in scoring position raised its head again as the Royals went just 2-for-11 and stranded 10 runners, eight of whom were in scoring position when the innings ended...Kansas City is 9-12 in its last 21 games and has batted .224 in RISP situations in that stretch...James Shields deserved a better fate, working 7.0 innings allowing the three runs on seven hits, as Detroit snapped a 1-1 tie in the seventh with a 2-run, 2-out rally...the Royals cut the gap to 3-2 in the eighth and had the winning run at second base in the ninth, but couldnt plate it...KC also had a run taken off the board when it was determined that Salvador Perez did not re-touch third base on a ball that got away after a sixth inning lineout.

ESKY LOVING LEADOFF--Alcides Escobar was moved to the top of the batting order a week ago yesterday and has responded by hitting .379 from the leadoff position in the last seven games, going 11-for-29 with two doubles, a home run and five runs scored...he enhanced those figures yesterday with a career-high tying 4-hit effort in the defeat, his fifth career 4-hit game, first since August 29 vs. Cleveland...he also collected his 32nd double of the year, adding to his career-best single-season total and marking the most two-base hits by a Kansas City shortstop since Jose Offerman had 33 in 1996.

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN--The Royals enter todays season finale with Detroit with nine decisions remaining on the 2014 docket...the club will leave tonight for Cleveland, where theyll open what has turned into a 4-game visit, with the first contest tomorrow the completion of the August 31 suspended game with the Royals trailing 4-2 in the 10th inning...the regular season will conclude with this 7+ game journey (suspended game included)...KCs remaining opponents include the Tigers (1), Indians (3+ suspended game) and White Sox (4)...the Tigers return to Detroit to face the White Sox (3) and the Twins (4)...as for Wild Card opponents, Oakland has Philly at home today and then hosts the A.L. West champion Angels (3) before traveling to Texas (4)...the Mariners are in Houston today, will travel to Toronto for four and then host the Angels for three on the final weekend.

ROLLERCOASTER RIDE AT HOME--The Royals 41-38 at home this year and just 3-6 through the first nine game of this final 10-game homestand, going 1-3 vs. Boston, 2-1 vs. the White Sox and 0-2 to this point vs. Detroit...KC is now 6-9 and trailing in a suspended game in its last 16 home contests...the year began with Kansas City going just 21-25 in Kauffman Stadium, but then from July 13 - August 27, KC reeled off a 14-4 mark here before falling into this recent stretch.
