This series is modeled after a brooch dating
from around 800 A.D. The piece was found at
Lukkarinmäki in Uskela. The round brooch is
ornamented with wave and ribbon-like designs.
This was a popular motif amond the Finno-
ugric tribes living along the Oka River, so this
piece was probably Russian in origin.

Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen is a story about a Spanish
beauty unwilling to give in to norms. The story of Carmen
inspired Kirsti Doukas to design the fourth Kalevala Jewelry
and Savonlinna Opera Festival collection.

Seppo Ilmarinen, the Eternal Hammerer, is a blacksmith and
inventor in the Kalevala. After the loss of his first wife, the
disheartened Ilmarinen attempts to craft a new one from gold
and silver, but finds the golden wife hard and cold.
The tale of the Golden Wife can be seen as a cautionary tale
based on the theme of “money cannot buy happiness”. To a
contemporary reader, there is also a similarity to the hubristic
nature of the Golem legend, or to Frankenstein, in that even
the most skilled of mortals cannot rival divine perfection when
creating life.

The Spell collection, designed by Kaisaleena mäkelä, refl ects immortal
symbolism through its intriguing dualism—the world we see and the
one we don’t.

The figures represented signs and meanings from the surrounding world. The sage would know their messages and the entire worldview of the time.
Figures in cave paintings speak to us from thousands of years ago. Humans,
an elk, or a bird, fi sh or a boat. The same fi gures also appear on the drum
of a shaman.

it was thought that f ly ing birds were in
communion with the gods. They were believed
to have knowledge to which only the gods
were privy and which humans could only learn
if they spoke the language of birds. Perhaps
this explains why many seers travelledto their
ancestors in the guise of a bird. The bird was
a messenger between man and the gods. buy
