Kahjok Tae Kwon Do Dear Student, You now have a taste of the martial art Tae Kwon Do, taught in the most traditional way through the Kahjok (family) Tae Kwon Do organization. We trust you have found your experience thus far to be enjoyable, refreshing, and worthwhile. As you continue your training, you will begin to feel the enduring physical and mental benefits from consistently attending classes and working hard while in class. You will notice an improvement in your stamina, breathing capacity, and flexibility (yes, it will come). You will also notice an increased ability to concentrate, the ability to focus better on the task at hand, and general improvement in mental awareness of the things around you. By now you should also be enjoying deeper and more restful sleep because of your training. These benefits do come at a price. The price of earning a black belt in Tae Kwon Do is high, and you must resolve in your mind whether you are willing to pay that price. Those of us associated with Kahjok Tae Kwon Do strive to keep the financial cost of your training to an absolute minimum. The high price we are speaking of is paid in terms of your commitment to train consistently, your hard work while in class, and your positive mental attitude about your training. You will discover as time wears on, that the temptation to skip a class here and there will be great. You will also discover that it is possible to come to class and not work hard, but to simply go through the motions. Additionally, because learning Tae Kwon Do techniques can involve high repetition of the same techniques, you will find that boredom will desire to be your frequent companion in class. If you wish to excel in Tae Kwon Do, you need not be a naturally gifted athlete. You need not be a young person. You need not be a ‘coordinated’ individual. If you wish to excel in Tae Kwon Do, you need only to be willing to pay the price. The price is paid in the form of attending every class available to you, whether you feel like it or not. It is paid in the form of resolving to train as hard as possible, executing every technique with every ounce of energy in your body. The price is paid in fighting against the boredom and lazy mind attitude that victimizes so many would-be black belts. If you gladly pay the price, you will excel in this martial art. The Kahjok circle of black belts is an exclusive group. We value the friendship and camaraderie of each black belt. But this exclusive group is not a closed group, for there is always room for one more. It is our dream, that you specifically will persevere in your training, and join this very special group of people. Your Friends and Training Partners Kahjok TKD

C. Student / classroom relationship:

1. Never tire of learning. This is the secret of knowledge. 2. There is a common tendency among beginners to tire of repeating the same

G. Definition of Tae Kwon Do: Tae Kwon Do was named such on April 11, 1955. The literal translation of Tae Kwon Do is: "Tae" means "foot" or "to strike with the feet". "Kwon" means "hand", or "to strike with the hand". "Do" means discipline, art or way. Hence Tae Kwon Do (foot-hand-way) means literally "the art of the feet and the hands" or "the art of kicking and punching".

Thus taken collectively "Tae Kwon Do" indicates the mental training and the techniques of unarmed combat for self-defense as well as health, involving the skilled application of punches, kicks, blocks and dodges with bare hands and feet to the rapid destruction of the moving opponent or opponents.

H. Definition of Hap Ki Do:

Hap Ki Do is the martial art that we use for Ho Shin Sool (self-defense). The literal translation of Hap Ki Do is: "Hap" stands for "to combine in Harmony". "Ki" denotes the "Power of the Mind and Body". "Do" means an art or way

The literal translation of Hap Ki Do is the art of combining the power of our mind, body and spirit.

I. The Reason for 24 Patterns:

The life of a human being, perhaps 100 years, can be considered as a day when compared with eternity. Therefore, we mortals are no more than simple travelers who pass by the eternal years of an eon in a day. It is evident that no one can live more than a limited amount of time. Nevertheless, most people foolishly enslave themselves to materialism as if they could live for thousands of years. And some people strive to bequeath a good spiritual legacy for coming generations, in this way, gaining immortality. Obviously, the spirit is perpetual while material is not; therefore, what we can do to leave behind something for the welfare of mankind is, perhaps, the most important thing in our lives. Here I leave Taekwon-Do for mankind as a trace of man of the late 20th century. The 24 patterns represent 24 hours, one day, or all my life. The name of the pattern, the number of movements, and the diagrammatic symbol of each pattern symbolizes either heroic figures in Korean history or instances relating to historical events. - General Choi, Hong Hi, founder of Tae Kwon Do

Revised 01/05/2014 Page 12

INDIVIDUAL BELT RANK MEMORIZATION SHEETS Each student is to receive the following Individual Belt Rank Memorization Sheets upon their successful promotion to their new level. Each Belt Rank Memorization Sheet contains the form, form meaning, kicking combination, ho shin sool, set one-step sparring, detailed movement of the form, and any required pledge, oath, home rules or tenants required for their rank. Students are responsible for knowing all information on each memorization sheet through their highest rank for each promotion testing. Students should only receive memorization sheets up to their highest promoted level. Students are broken down into the following levels:

1. Novice Student: White, Yellow, and Purple Belts 2. Intermediate Student: Orange, Green, and Blue Belts 3. Advanced Student: Brown, Brown/Red, Red, and Red/Black Belts

The following apply to the memorization sheets: 1. Kicking Combination: All kicks are traditional and middle section unless otherwise

noted.

2. Essential Information about Patterns: The following points should be considered while performing patterns:

1. Each pattern should begin and end at exactly the same spot. This indicates the student's accuracy.

2. Correct posture and facing must be maintained at all times. 3. Muscles of the body should be either tensed or relaxed at the proper critical moments in

the pattern. 4. The pattern should be performed in a rhythmic movement with the absence of stiffness. 5. Movements should be accelerated or decelerated according to the instructions for the

pattern. 6. Each pattern should be perfected before moving to the next pattern. 7. Students should know the name and purpose of each movement in the pattern. 8. Students should perform each movement with realism.

All patterns are performed under the assumption the student is facing "D" (see pattern diagrams). There are a total of twenty-four patterns in Tae Kwon Do. The name of the pattern, number of movements, and diagrammatic symbol of each pattern symbolize either heroic figures in Korean history or instances relating to historical events. The interpretation of each pattern will be found on its specific page. Forms, kicking combinations, and Ho Shin Sool should be practice both from the right and the left sides.

One-Step Sparring: One-step sparring (il su shik) refers to a practiced self-defense technique that takes place in one step. In other words, your opponent throws one punch and you counteract with a block in one step before striking. Basic flow of one-step sparring:

• Students face each other in a ready stance (narani sogi) about an arm’s length apart • The student that is the attacker kihaps to indicate that they are ready. The student that is

the defender than kihaps to let the attacker know that they are ready • The attacker punches by stepping forward with their right foot and throwing a right punch

to the defender’s solar plexus • The student that is the defender simultaneously executes a block and counter attacks • Students return to ready stance and switch roles.

One-step sparring helps you to improve:

A. Accuracy B. Balance C. Control D. Distance S. Speed

Partner training also helps improve self control, cooperation, and respect.

Three-Step Sparring: Three-step sparring is similar to one-step only you react in three steps before striking. As your opponent throws a punch (three in total) while moving towards you, you counteract each punch with a block while retreating and counter attack after the last block.

How to Tie Your Belt

Hold the belt at its center, ends even with stripes (if you have them) on the left side.

Place center of belt on front of center of jacket, about one inch below the naval (a location called the tanden). Wrap belt around your waist, crossing the right side over the left side at center of back. Stripes will now be on your right side. Pull ends of belt forward and adjust so the

ends are even.

Lay the left side of the belt over the tanden. Lay the right side of belt across the tanden. Stripes will now be on your left side.

Slide the left side of belt (striped side) under and behind all the belt layers at the tanden. Stripes will still be on your left side.

Loop

Bring left (stripped) end of belt down and over the front of the U

Loop stripped end under and up through the U shape to form a knot.

Pull ends of belt outward to tighten knot. Stripes (if any) will be on your right side.

Adjust knot so the ends of belt are even and hang neatly.
