CHIEF FIRE OFFICER KEVIN SUTTON‘S MESSAGE.

Chief Fire Officer Kevin Sutton. This year 2011, marks the centenary of service to the Kaitangata and the wider community by the Kaitangata Volunteer Fire Brigade. On behalf of the current brigade members and their partners, it is my privilege as the current Chief Fire Officer to welcome all life members, past members, invited guests and visitors who have travelled from throughout New Zealand and Australia to our Centennial Celebrations over Labour Weekend, 2011.

The Kaitangata Volunteer Fire Brigade has had an interesting and at times busy history and over the weekend of celebrations, I’m sure many stories will surface - some true and some maybe not so true!

From early beginnings fighting fires with buckets and hand pumps to the well equipped fire station and appliance we have now, our town has been well served and the brigade is in good shape to protect the community well into the future.

As the newest member of the brigade at the 75th celebrations in 1986, I cut the cake along with the eldest past member Bill Simm and I feel privileged to receive my Gold Star at this years centennial celebrations.

Thankyou to present and past firefighters, visitors, family and friends who have travelled from near and far to be with us today. I especially thank our members, wives, and all who helped to organise this event - I hope you all have an enjoyable time and safe journey home after the festivities are over.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR.9 September 2011

Mayoral Message for Kaitangata Volunteer Fire Brigade Centenary

It is an absolute pleasure to be able to welcome visitors and officials to Kaitangata to attend the Cen-tenary Celebrations of the Kaitangata Volunteer Fire Brigade.

Volunteers are the backbone of any community and the time and dedication they put in to keeping others safe cannot be underestimated.

Not only has the Kaitangata Volunteer Fire Brigade now served their community for 100 years, they have done so with distinction, always turning out a highly skilled and motivated force. That the Kai-tangata Brigade has now produced 17 Gold Star Members (firefighters who have served for 25 years or more) is testament to this fact.

Volunteer firefighters are most recognisable to the community when responding to major emergen-cies. As we all know, however, they also dedicate a huge amount of time to training, courses, practices, meetings and other community events. They give this time freely, taking reward only in the knowledge that they are doing their part to keep their community safe. Much appreciation must also be extended to the volunteers’ family members, who unselfishly support their loved ones in being away from home for long periods of time.

I must also make special mention of the work the Kaitangata Volunteer Fire Brigade has carried out under Civil Defence. They diligently perform tasks such as helping to shift people and stock from flood-prone areas, filling sandbags and providing transport where required. This work is crucial to ensure people’s safety, and to help protect property, during a major event.

On behalf of the Kaitangata and surrounding community, I would like to thank each and every mem-ber who has served the brigade over the past century. I am sure the brigade will continue to thrive and represent its community with honour over the next 100 years.

DEDICATIONThis centennial booklet is dedicated to the past and present members of the Kaitangata Volunteer Fire Brigade, who have unselfishly served the Kaitangata and District Communities for the last 100 years.

FOREWARDCongratulation to the Kaitangata Fire Brigade for their service to Kaitangata and neighbouring areas over the past 100 years.

From small beginnings - even more than 100 years ago it has been documented that bucket brigades were used to fight fires in Kaitangata, with members of the community forming lines and passing along buckets of water which were taken from the river to throw on the fires. Certainly times have changed immensely! Before electricity came to Kaitangata house fires were predominate, the use of candles for lighting caused many a fire, as well as open fires, ashes in unsafe places, smoking in bed, chimneys which went on fire - probably because they needed cleaning, and many other reasons.

Better safety standards and greater publicity and awareness of fire risks and with the installation of smoke detectors alerting people earlier to fires in buildings, hopefully these measures prevent fires taking too great a hold before they are extinguished. The increasing high level publicity of fire-safety awareness is attributable to the shift in ethos from being a reactive organisation, primarily occupied attending fire callouts to being a proactive one, for which prevention and education is equally impor-tant.

Expanding its role to reflect both the emphasis on prevention and to cover new hazards that have emerged as a consequence of new technology, the Brigade is no longer restricted to fighting fires. Wider fields and duties include Civil Defence emergencies, accidents, floods, earthquakes, rescues, hazardous chemicals and materials, and medical callouts are now all part of fire fighting duties.

Beside attending calls, these dedicated firemen and women give up significant time to attend meet-ings, practices, courses in first aid and training events.

A QUOTE, I feel is appropriate to the fire service.

“Coming together is a beginning Keeping together is progress Thinking together is unity

Working together is success”.

Thank you to all the Kaitangata Fire Brigade members for their help and co-operation in the writing and publishing of this booklet. A very special thanks to Lindsay Wright for seeking out much of the information I required. Thankyou also to Dwayne Thompson who designed and produced the cover photograph. To Chris Lee and his staff at Clutha Print thankyou for your understanding and help in the printing of this booklet.

I wish the Brigade successful centennial celebrations and as you look forward to the next 100 years no doubt the future will bring new technology in the areas of fire fighting beyond your future expecta-tions.

Irene Sutton.

EARLY HISTORYFire is a factor with which every community has to reckon with sooner or later, and in 1910 several connected premises in Kaitangata were completely destroyed by fire. These buildings we are led to believe were at lower Exmouth/Clyde Terrace where the Kai Auto and Panel-beating business now is. During that same year a row of shops on the eastern side of Water Street were burnt to the ground. Local residents formed a bucket brigade in an attempt to extinguish the fire.

Those fires set in motion a desire for some kind of fire fighting equipment. At the first meeting held in the Kaitangata Borough Council Chambers (then situated in Water Street) on Tuesday, 23rd May 1911, the decision was made to form a Volunteer Brigade. A list of thirteen members willing to serve was presented and approved officers were elected. Among those who took an active part and served as volunteers included: W. D. Patterson, C.E. Yates, D. Middlemass, and D. P. Clements. At the initial meeting, Mr. C. Yates (Mayor of Kaitangata and also the 1st Superintendent of the Brigade), stated that five lengths of hose, each one hundred feet long were available in case of fire. It would be neces-sary to fit a reel for the hose, provide housing for the appliance and a hose drying facility. Mr. Burrow kindly offered a pair of buggy wheels and Mr. R. Aitchison an axle for the reel.

The next meeting five months later saw the election of the second superintendent Mr. P. Souness, and a report on the first fire attended by the Brigade at Mr. Chas. Kirby’s shop in Exmouth Street. A full number of fireman attended and the outbreak was “quietly extinguished”.

Two years later on 18th November 1913, the next meeting was held, a report was given on an “equally exciting” Fire No. 2. What this fire was, we are unable to ascertain. The Town Clerk handed in corre-spondence regarding, the offer for sale by the Christchurch Fire Board, of two chemical engines, each of 80 gallons capacity, for sale at fifty pound each, a very low figure. The engines, which cost Christch-urch three hundred pounds, were now in first class order. It was decided to raise money to purchase one of these engines. Each fireman was assigned a section of the town, to seek public subscriptions and private donations, resulting in forty pounds handed in by firemen and nineteen pounds seventeen and six pence collected by the Town Clerk. Mr Alex Reid, (a transport operator who established “Reid Motors”) kindly offered the use of his horses to pull the chemical engine.

On the 26th June 1916, the chemical engine was in need of an overhaul. During the next two and a half years, five fires were reported, among them:

W. D. Carson, - a hedge fire. Mrs. Aitchison, - house fire. (Mrs. Aitchison was the wife of the Ex-Superintendent of the Brigade.)Mrs. Middlemass, - house fire. (Mrs. Middlemass was the wife of the Brigade Secretary.) On the 17th June 1919, there was a fire outbreak at the Bridge Hotel, which was promptly quelled.

The Brigade continued in active work. In 1921, Kaitangata was formed into a Fire District, under the administration of a Fire Board, with Mr. E. McFadyen as the first Chairman, (a position he held until 1927). Other Board members included: R. Aitchison, T. Purvis, H. Low, J. Hislop and T. Gage. Mr T. Middlemass was appointed Secretary at twelve pounds twelve shillings per year. It has been stated: on the Fire Board were two representatives from the Fire Brigade, a Borough Council representative, two Dunedin representatives, with the Town Clerk of Kaitangata in a paid position as Secretary to the Board. In 1924 the Kaitangata Fire Brigade joined the UFBA - the United Fire Brigade Associa-tion. 1975, marked the abolition of the Fire Boards, having been replaced by the New Zealand Fire Service Commission, which took control of all brigades throughout New Zealand. Roy Carmichael a Kaitangata Borough Councillor was the last Chairman of the Fire Board.

A bylaw was proposed on 11th April 1922, that the Fire Brigade control entertainment attendance numbers. By 1924, a weekly roster was drawn up for picture theatre duty. It was agreed the payment

for duty be paid to the Brigade, but eighteen months later it was discontinued. In 1928, A. Jensen gave notice that all firemen attend parades in uniform. During the 1930’s because of the Depression, new equipment was hard to procure; by 1936 a procedure was being followed to secure a larger Fire Station and more modern equipment.

FIRE STATIONSIn 1911, the “Model T” appliance was stored in a small station situated near the northwest corner of Water and Exmouth Streets, near the now unused men’s toilet. This building served its purpose well until it became too small for the size of the appliance it had to store. This building was then shifted to Torquay Street as an office/smoko room at the Kaitangata Borough Council yards and is still on this site, which is now owned by Ted Gallagher.

The Fire Board controlling the area, in 1937, negotiated the taking over of Mr. Bisset’s Garage on the corner of Torquay and Eddystone Streets for use as a permanent Fire Station site. By 1939, the new Fire Station (on the same site of the present Fire Station) was commissioned. This new Fire Station awaited the arrival of a new fire engine in 1940.

Extensions to the station were carried out at various times until in 1985, this building housing the engine was abolished and a new one rebuilt on the same site. During this time of alterations the Fire Engine was housed at Max Robertson’s Bus Garage in Water Street.

With the handing over of the State Coal Mine Office in Eddystone Street to the Borough Council after the closing of the Lockington Mine in 1970 (the last Kaitangata underground mine) the prop-erty was to be assigned to the Kaitangata Urban Fire Authority pending the further vesting of owner-ship and the implementation of Government Legislation.

The main activity in 1974-75 was to finally obtain the Ex State Coal Mine Office, to be used as an extension of the existing building; alterations were then made to join up the two buildings as well as an extension of a social room, on the north side. Beck Builders carried this out in 1976-77. Further upgrading later took place with the erection of the new Appliance Bay in 1984-85, and “the Snug” in 1992. Upgrading of both equipment and amenities are a continuing process, new computers, a dish-washer, a heat pump and a fridge-freezer and the lining of the building are among these changes. The building with its first class facilities is now a tremendous asset, to not only the Kaitangata Fire Brigade but to our community at large.

THE ARRIVAL OF THE FORD V8 FIRE ENGINE IN 1940.

In 1964 a brand new COMMER FIRE ENGINE arrived at the Station. The Kaitangata Fire Bri-gade used this fire engine for the next 10 years. Thank you to the Fire Brigade for this photograph.

In 1941, it was decided that any dress missing at the Annual Parade would be paid out of the mem-ber’s boot allowance. That same year, Brigade members joined the Emergency Patrol Service (E.P.S.) of the Home Guard.

June 1948, and “needing a quid”, Superintendent Alf Hall reported that timber had been ordered for the alterations needed for the station, a raffle and a score guessing competition on the Crescent via Clinton Rugby game was to be run.

Meeting nights were changed to Sundays with only one meeting to be held per month. By 1957, the meeting nights were changed to the 1st Thursday of each month. At a Gala Day to celebrate the 85th Anniversary of the Kaitangata School in 1951, it was decided to decorate the Fire Engine for the procession.

One of the Brigade’s sad days was in June 1955, when Fireman “Nip” Waters died while attending a fire in Start Street.

A new siren donated by the State Coalmines Department in 1958, was installed at the Fire Station. This was, as far as records show, the third sounding device used as an alarm. The church bell at the Presbyterian Church was used as a fire bell in the very early days. The first Fire Brigade Bell, which now hangs proudly in the Social Room at the Fire Station, was previously situated on the south side, of Market Street, “about outside No. 10 property.” As a boy, Jock Braidwood (who lived in Market Street), used to quite often be hoisted up onto the platform to ring the bell.

The FIRE BELL.Later there was a siren connected up near the school because firemen in that area of the town were unable to hear the siren at the Fire Station. Alarm Buttons for the public to activate were at the fire station, at the corner of Eddystone and Poole Streets, and in Clyde Terrace. An Alarm System connected the Eventide Home to the sta-tion.

In 1960, the Brigade was involved in having estab-lished in Kaitangata, a 24-hour telephone service (the Telephone Exchange was situated in the Post Office building on the corner of Eddystone and Exmouth Street) - as a result of the extension of hours, there was a much better alarm coverage.

It was unanimously agreed at a meeting on 4th Feb-ruary 1965, that a letter of thanks be sent to Mr. and Mrs. Richardson, for the donation of a piano. ( Jimmy and Winnie Richardson were members of Dick’s Band, who played for many Fire Brigade functions. They were also in-laws of long serving brigade member Lindsay Wright) This piano is still at the Fire Brigade rooms.

INTERNATIONAL FIRE ENGINE in 1974 came from Oamaru and later transferred to

Pukerau.

The Current fire engine soon to be replaced.

The new sophisticated paging system introduced in 1991, has proved its worth with faster responses and a larger turnout of firemen turning up to answer the fire siren.

Over the 1990-91 period, some 100 farms in the Rural District were surveyed by the brigade to assess vital information on water supplies, water / chemical storage, size and access to all buildings. A large time consuming task involving many miles of travel, but one crucial for the preplanning of fires in the Rural Areas. Now with the Rapid Numbers displayed on gates, properties are easier to identify and locate.

The Brigade has developed as an integral part of the Kaitangata community, over the years many names appear that are still prominent in our community today. There have been several generations from the same family as well as members from the same generation who have been firefighters, among names that come to hand include: Charles Hislop - with grandson Charles Hislop; Alf Hall’s - son Selwyn and Alf ’s brother Eddie Hall; Jack Stephenson’s - sons Neville and Bill; Jack’s - brother - Joe Stephenson - his sons, Peter in the Kaitangata Brigade and Wayne (who was a Fire Officer at the Dunedin Metropolitan Fire Station and the St Kilda Fire Station); R (Bob) Falconer and his son’s Robert and Bill; J. FIREMEN WHO ACHIEVED HIGH HONOURS WHO WERE BROUGHT UP IN OUR AREA BUT WERE NEVER MEMBERS OF OUR FIRE BRIGADE.DARRYL FORRESTIn 2002, Darryl Forrest a member of the Balclutha Volunteer Fire Brigade, an ex-pupil of the Kaitan-gata School and a son of the late Clarrie and Linda Forrest was elected Senior Vice-President of the United Fire Brigades Association of New Zealand (Inc), this was followed a year later by becoming their National President. Earlier Darryl had held the positions of President of the South Otago Sub Association and the Otago / Southland Fire Brigades Association. Darryl was awarded The Queens Service Medal for his service to the UFBA. In 2002, Darryl along with the association’s executive director, Don Roper were selected as representatives of the New Zealand firefighters, and travelled to New York to meet the families of the firefighters who died in the September 11th Twin Towers ter-rorist attack. They presented to the widows and families over $164,000, which was raised through a public appeal, with much of the money coming from firefighters throughout New Zealand. A wreath was laid in conjunction with the Kiwi Club, a group of New Zealanders living in the United States of America. Plaques were presented to each of the 40 brigades who lost fire fighters in this terrorist attack. A sober and moving experience.

JOCK BRAIDWOODAnother Ex-pupil of Kaitangata Primary School, Jock Braidwood now of Alexandra was member of the Alexandra Fire Brigade for 35 years. He proceeded through the ranks of the brigade to become Alexandra’s Chief Fire Officer (a position he held for 18 years).

As a child ringing the fire bell in Market Street must have had a profound effect on Jock, as he is always interested in hearing about our brigade and still attends Regional get- togethers.

IAN ROSSIan Ross A former Kaitangata schoolboy and son of Ruth and George Ross, owner of Ross’s Passen-ger Services in Kaitangata. Ian joined the Balclutha Brigade in 1966.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer of the Balclutha Brigade for 15 years until in 2007 Ian joined the Fire Police Unit, which provides security and traffic control when called upon.

Much of Ian’s spare time has been spent with the Balclutha Fire Brigade, being a competitor, judge and starter in the Competitions. Four times winner of the Frank Cooke Trophy awarded to the member of the Balclutha Brigade who attends most parades in a year. Gold Star holder for 25 years service, a Past President and Secretary of the South Otago Sub-Association, Past President of Otago /Southland Fire Brigades Association, Competition Panel and Gold Star Association. Ian along with his wife Janet have been timekeepers at both regional and national competitions. Janet still timekeeps and Ian is a starter marshall at competition events. After serving 45 years as a brigade member Ian hopes to achieve 50 years service and receive a Double Gold Star in 5 years time (2016).

GAVIN HAIG Gavin Haig, another Kaitangata guy, son of Vern Haig who lived in Wyre Street and whose father was a carpenter at the Kaitangata Coal Mine. Vern his father, was a member of the Kaitangata Fire Brigade during his time in Kaitangata.

Gavin supported the Gore Competition Team and was a Chief Fire Officer at Gore.

Gavin was a service manager for 28 years at Lattys a car dealership in Gore and for the last 25 years he was a probation officer for the Corrections Department based also in Gore. He retired in July 2011.

PAST KAITANGATA FIRE BRIGADE MEMBERS WHO DESERVE SPECIAL MENTION.It is very hard to not mention every Kaitangata Fire Brigade member or past member, as it takes a special type of person who voluntarily gives up his time and who is dedicated to the fire service and to their community.

The following past firemen from the Kaitangata Fire Brigade who have been honoured by the Queen, receiving the following recognised awards for Services to the Fire Brigade and to the Kaitangata Community.

Awarded Queen’s Fire Service Medal for his services to the com-munity and in particular to the Kaitangata Volunteer Fire Brigade. A mechanic by trade, Jim Rowe and his wife Thelma moved o Kai-tangata in 1952, buying a garage and setting up Rowe and Holden Motors, in partnership with Nat Holden. Later Jim took over the business, operating it for 35 years until selling it in 1987. Any me-chanical work to do on the fire-engine or at the station Jim was the “fix-it man”.

A volunteer fireman from 1953 until 1990, Jim held the position of Chief Fire Officer for 20 years from 1970 until 1990. The longest serving Chief Fire Officer to date. A valued member of the Fire Bri-gade for 37 years, Jim was awarded a Life Membership in 1968 and received his Gold Star in 1978. For a short time he was secretary

and also a representative on the Fire Board. At Auckland in 1985 in the New Zealand Competition Jim was a time-keeper.

After a family history of glaucoma and an early indication of trouble in his left eye, as well as a welding accident in 1986, it was a bitter blow when Jim lost the sight of both eyes. Joining the Foundation for the Blind, Jim was instrumental in South Otago in establishing the Telephone Information Service, a project that involves people reading the local newspaper over the telephone to the sight impaired.

Elected to the Kaitangata Borough Council in 1953, Jim remained a Councillor until amalgamation took place in 1984. He later took a great interest in the “Kaitangata Ratepayers Association” and then the “Kaitangata and Districts’ Promotions Inc”. Now living in Mosgiel, Jim a staunch Kaitangata sup-porter still rings up to find out what is happening in Kaitangata and Districts.

Lindsay was very proud of his competition teams and their achievements! (See teams Lindsay coached under section on the Competition Teams).

Lindsay still spends time at the Fire Station each week, cleaning-up, washing floors and other duties. Certainly a dedicated fireman!

CORONATION MEDAL.1953 - ALF HALL

Chief Fire Officer at this time, Alf Hall was awarded the Corona-tion Medal in 1953. Alf joined the Kaitangata Fire Brigade in 1934 and was appointed Chief Fire Officer in 1943, a position he held until 1959, a term of 16 years. In 1959 as Chief Fire Officer, Alf was awarded a Life Membership of the Kaitangata Brigade and he also received his Gold Star for 25 years service. No member of the Kai-tangata Brigade had held the position of President of the Otago and Southland Provincial Fire Brigades’ Association until 1949 when Alf was elected.

At the age of 14, Alf started work in the underground coalmine working there until he was one of the last few workers left when the mine closed down in 1970. During his time at the mine, Alf contin-ued to strive for success in his field and, with hard study he ended up in the position of under-viewer.

Alf Hall’s community interest extended into local bodies and in 1944 he was elected onto the Kaitan-gata Borough Council, being elected Mayor in 1950 a position he held for three terms of office, until 1959. He worked tirelessly and was instrumental in fighting to have the Kaitangata War Memorial Hall built. Another project dear to Alf ’s heart was the building of three Pensioner’s Flats in Eddys-tone Street which were first mooted in 1957 but it was not until 1986 after years of negotiation that confirmation was finally received. The flats were officially opened on 19th August 1988.

“May our reunion be coupled with the Union of Happiness. And the Fire of Friendship never be quenched by the ‘Branch of Discord”.

At the 50th Anniversary in 1961, the Mayor of Kaitangata at that time Mr Wattie Parker hoped that the Mayor at the time of the 100th Anniversary finds the “Volunteer Brigades just as efficient as that of today”. Amalgamation certainly wasn’t on his mind then, as we no longer have a Kaitangata Bor-ough Council or a Mayor. (In 1986 Kaitangata amalgamated with the Bruce County Council and the Milton Borough Council to become the Bruce District Council. Three years later in 1989 the above amalgamated with the Balclutha Borough Council to become the Clutha District Council).

HONORARY MEMBERSOver the years the Fire Brigade has conferred Honorary memberships to: Colin Jenkinson, Ivan Jenkinson, Kevin Gale, John Egers, Tony Berry and Bill Proctor, for services to the Brigade. They were musicians in “Jenkinson‘s Band” and “The Crescents” Band who played gratis for many brigade social functions. Also in this band was Fireman Mervyn Ferguson who later became a Life Member of the Brigade. It was in 1962 when Colin, Ivan and Bill were awarded honorary memberships. In 2002, Bill Proctor received a presentation, in appreciation of 40 years of Honorary Membership. (Bill managed the bar on a regular basis until he shifted to Balclutha in 2009). Other honorary members have included: Eric Bisset - who audited the books for many years, Ian Budge, Willie Morrison, Nicol Morrison, Dave Williamson, John Spence, Fred Uren, Ron McCabe, Graeme Jenkinson, Joe Karauria, Ted Gallagher, Ross Anderson, Gordon Wheeler, Wayne Cochrane.

FIRESOver the years, the Kaitangata Volunteer Firemen have responded to many calls: attending not only a diverse range of fire situations, but to all kinds of accidents, as well as to assist other brigades in larger emergencies by providing assistance or a back-up service. Other emergency alerts such as police and medical assistance calls are also responded to.

The brigade has attended several major fires over the years, many of these were out of the immediate area: at the P.P.C.S. Finegand Freezing Works in 1955, 1966 and 1989; McSkimming Pottery Works at Benhar in 1990; Ward 1, Balclutha Hospital in 1990; Windward Skins in 1993 and 1995; South Otago Engineers in 1977; Stirling School in 1987 to name a few.

Hundreds of acres of forestry are planted in close proximity to houses on the hill above the town. The Kaitangata Brigade first responds to the call and if it is outside their area the Rural Fire Officer employed by the Clutha District Council is consulted and depending on who owns the land what the next step would be. Eg. If it is the Department of Conservation Land - they have their own gear but at times could contract the Clutha District Council re - fire fighting purposes. The Rural Fire Service has its own smoke chaser and seven water tankers which are based throughout the South Otago area.Over the years several house fires have occurred in the town and surrounding areas, some suspicious others caused by a variety of reasons.

The former house of Arene and “Tote” Hale’s in Exmouth Street. This building was formally the KAITANGATA POST OFFICE from 1876 until a new one was built in 1911 in Eddystone Street. It burnt down in 2004. Thank you to Daphne Watt (nee Hale) for the photograph of the house and to the fire brigade for a photo of the fire.

During the quite frequent flooding of the Clutha Delta in the last few years, the Fire Brigade crews have given outstanding round the clock service and help to Civil Defence, to the Kaitangata town-ship and to the wider community. As a disciplined body their co-operation with the Civil Defence warrants a special mention. It is not until you have a major event such as the floods that frequent the Clutha Delta, that you find the full potential and resourcefulness of your own brigade. The safety of people is always the No1 priority and the fire brigade personnel under the control of the Civil De-fence worked hard alongside volunteers shifting people and stock from flood prone areas, filling sand bags at strategic places and providing transport when required.

Much voluntary time is spent not only responding to the siren or pager calls, but to attending the many Courses, Field Days, Meetings, weekly Training Sessions, Displays, Rescues and participation in a variety of Community events. Within the Fire District, as a public relations safety exercise in 1998-99, (after a large fund raising effort - “Stars in your Eyes”), free fire alarms were given to all the homes in the town which never had alarms installed. A tremendous effort!

To raise money for the roofing of the Swimming pool in 1994, a “Sports Person / Sports Team” Com-petition was held in Kaitangata, with the Running Team winning the top “Sport’s Team” Award.

The Fire Safety Officer assisted by a Fire Officer from the brigade promotes Fire Safety procedures at community meetings as well as at the Kaitangata Primary School and the Play Centre to educate not only the children but hopefully this also leads to the whole family becoming more aware of fire safety procedures within the home environment and the wider community.

After a change in regulations 2009, the Fire Brigade now turns out to medical calls to help the patient in any way they can until the ambulance arrives. Housed in the Fire appliance is a defibrillator and an oxygen kit. Members attend courses and are trained to use this equipment.

Brigade membership, reaches its full strength at 24 Fire Fighters. These numbers vary from time to time. At present their numbers total 20. In 1976 at the 97th United Fire Brigade Association Annual Conference in Wanganui, a remit was received from the Brunner Fire Brigade, calling for admission of women to the Membership of the UFBA. However the short answer from the Commission was that there was NO provision for female firefighters. Times change and women can now become fire-fighters.

The first woman fire fighter to join the Kaitangata Brigade was Myrlene Wright a daughter of Lindsay and June Wright, followed by Marilyn Oliver and at present Qualified Fire Fighter Rebecca Hertzig has joined the brigade after transferring from Takaka Brigade in the Nelson region.

The Fire Brigade is a great family to belong to. Social and family activities for members, ex-members, wives, partners and children are an integral and an important part of the brigade environment. Every year the Kaitangata Fire Station is beautifully decorated for the Christmas celebrations, a sumptuous Christmas Dinner organised by the ladies is served for the adults - members, ex-members, partners, and honorary members followed by a social at which the Service Honours are presented. The next day the children have their party after which Santa Claus arrives usually in the fire engine and distributes presents to all the children. This is followed by a BBQ for everyone.

Games nights, karaoke nights and social and fun events are held to get to know one another and for new comers to meet fellow firefighters and their families. The support given to the fire fighters by the wives and partners, their work in catering for events and fire brigade functions are very much appreciated and recognised not only by the brigade but by the community as a whole.

IYVIn 2001 the UFBA awarded medals to current members of the Fire Brigade throughout New Zealand to commemorate the “International Year of the Volunteer” (IYV). COMPETITION TEAMSThe Competition teams over the years have been extremely successful, this is mainly due to the dedi-cation and many hours spend in training over many months, by the coach and all members of the teams.

In April 1945, the Brigade met with members of the Borough Council to discuss the placing of a fireplug to be fitted at Victoria Park for the use of the brigade during the practise nights and for the competitions. During November of that year the Southern District’s demonstration was held at Mil-ton, in which Kaitangata was represented. The team being successful in gaining two seconds, and one third in the events, winning five pounds in prize money. This was the beginning of the running team’s organised competitions.

Since then, the Brigade has pursued a very active and successful involvement in the competition run-ning teams, not only in South Otago, Otago / Southland, and South Island, but the firemen have com-peted successfully at National level, winning medals at the United Fire Brigade Association of New Zealand Championships. It was an honour for the team to be invited as the Guest Team at the Can-terbury Competitions held in Christchurch on several occasions. Teams have competed nationally at Auckland, Christchurch, Gisborne, Queenstown, Petone, Invercargill, Renwick to name a few. Com-petitions involve many hours of practice over and above the regular fire brigade training or courses, which the firemen attend. Up to eleven competitions are held annually. Venues have been: Kaitangata, Milton, Queenstown, Balclutha, Gore, Browns, Mataura, Conical Hills, Roxburgh, Waikaia, Clyde, Outram, Alexandra, Edendale, Balfour, Bluff, Cromwell, Tiwai Point, Lumsden, Ravensbourne, Te Anau, Mossburn, Palmerston, Port Chalmers, Portobello, Owaka, Oamaru and Riversdale. Not all of these brigades now field running teams.

EMPLOYER RECOGNITION PROGRAMMEIn 2010 at a special night, employers of the firemen were given Certificates of Appreciation as part of a New Zealand Fire Service Strategy to recognise the contribution the employers have given to the Fire Service by allowing their employees to attend fire calls and musters. A notice board on the out-side of the Kaitangata Fire Station gives the name of various businesses who supported the Kaitangata Fire Brigade in 2010, Balclutha Honda, Country Motors, Fonterra, Greg Peoples Builder, Johnstone’s Electrical, Kai Point Coal, Russell Williamson Electrical and Silverfern Farms.

The wives, partners and families of the firemen are all very much part of the team, and work hard to make an efficient organisation, which serves the community proud. We all appreciate the firemen’s dedicated commitment to their communities.

FIREMAN’S PRAYER.Whenever I’m called to duty God,Whenever Flames may rageGive me the strength to save a lifeWhatever be its age.

Help me embrace a little childBefore it is too lateOr save an older personFrom the horrors of that fate.

Enable me to be alertAnd hear the weakest shoutAnd quickly and efficientlyTo put the fire out.

I want to fill my callingAnd give the best in meTo guard my every neighbourAnd protect his property.

And if according to your willI have to lose my lifePlease bless with your protective handsMy children and my wife. Amen.
