Today, Hulme’s iconic character and passion lives on. Every bag and accessory continues to be individually hand crafted by American artisans. Full grain leathers are all sourced from US tanneries and hand-cut by masters using steel dies. All hardware is solid brass. Threads are unbreakable. Zippers maneuver fluidly. Leather edges are hand-dyed. Linings are meticulously matched and hand-sewn. Designs include unexpected features such as key leashes and hidden pockets. Every detail is important and every piece is personally inspected.

Discerning owners of Hulme products have ample time to appreciate the design, construction and rich, deepening patina. All bags and accessories are guaranteed for life, for this generation and the next, preserving John W. Hulme’s legacy of outstanding American-made quality.

After World War I, J.W. Hulme Co. began to apply its fastidious approach of purposeful design and construction towards producing awnings for the homes of St. Paul’s elite. Such was the demand for Hulme’s craftsmanship that the company’s product offering grew over time to include leather and canvas sporting bags and accessories. Distinctive Hulme bags became a must-have for the serious outdoor sportsman. As the company flourished it concentrated solely on making bags, including private label bags for other prominent companies.

In 2003 J.W. Hulme Co. did something extraordinary. It purposely reduced its operations and stopped producing private label bags. The company refocused all hands on quality over quantity. Instead of replacing workers

John W. Hulme founded our company in 1905 as a tent and awning maker. By 1917 Hulme was making tents for American soldiers fighting the Great War. Conditions were severe. The tents were designed and constructed with 100 percent cotton canvas that expanded when wet to create a superior barrier against the elements. Each stitch and feature was crucial, and either increased the tent’s performance or reduced unnecessary weight and cost.

The design of Hulme's duffle harkens back to the days when travel bags had to endure the harshest of conditions. Ours still can. The three-buckle dust flap serves two important functions: first, to protect the large double-zippered opening; second, to secure contents. Expertly crafted, each duffle is reinforced with double-stitched unbreakable T90 thread and/or riveted leather at the stress points; has an all-leather shoulder strap with sliding pad (to make bearing heavy loads easier) and a secret internal end pocket for valuables. Additionally, all rolling versions are outfitted with a hard-formed dropped bottom for separate extra-durable storage of items such as boots, tools, equipment or even dirty clothes. Rolling features include a telescoping handle and stair glides.
