About me...Born and raised in upstate New York, my love for nature and animals was nurtured by living on top of a mountain on a mini-farm. Throughout the years, cats, dogs, horses, cows, goats, chickens, a squirrel and ducks were a huge part of my growing up. My father was an animal lover and farmer at heart. He had worked the fields with plow horses in his youth and had always dreamed of owning a farm. He had a small herd of dairy cattle started but the Korean War interfered with this dream. The cows were sold, and off to war he went. My mother, also an animal lover, was a dairy farmer’s daughter and carried on many farm traditions in the kitchen with awesome home cooking. There were no boxed cake mixes or prepared foods in her kitchen; everything was made from scratch.

From the time I left home, there have been animals in my life. Numerous dogs and cats, tree frogs, anoles, and a beautiful 5-foot-long iguana, which I begrudgingly gave away in order to move to North Carolina.

I am currently on the board of Humane Solution, an organization that holds rabies/microchip fundraisers in order to supplement spay/neuter certificates to pet owners. If we could control overpopulation, there would be no need for the animal shelters. It would be good to put them out of business! I’m sure they wouldn’t mind, either.

About Gabby...I was without a dog for about two weeks in my entire life. I didn’t like coming home to a dogless house - it was scary and an empty feeling. My son called me and told me about a dog he had found chained and starving to death behind a very “nice” house. A friend and I contacted these people and offered veterinary assistance, and to help or assist them with food. The next day I called them directly and left messages asking to buy the dog. They did not respond. This was during a cold spell in November so it was imperative that we get the dog out of that situation as quickly as possible. I knew if I didn’t act, her days would be numbered. A neighbor had shared with us that he had buried other dogs that were unfortunate enough to be owned by this family. I had no choice but to contact Animal Control. Knowing full well that the deck was stacked against this dog for survival at the shelter, I volunteered to foster the dog and take on its medical bills. Once we got her to the vet, my fears were realized - she was extremely heartworm positive and severely emaciated. Those two factors would have been her death sentence at the shelter. The staff at the shelter was incredibly helpful in getting her through the system and to a vet as quickly as possible.

They also stayed in touch to see how she was doing. I can only say good things about Forsyth County Animal Control.It only took about two weeks of fostering before I realized I’d found my dog. Two years later, I have the most amazing, intelligent, well-behaved, loving dog I’ve ever owned. Despite all she endured in her first 2 years of life - she’s absolutely trustworthy and loyal. I named her Gabrielle, after Gabrielle the princess warrior from the Zena, Warrior Princess TV series. I thought it only fitting that she should be named after a strong, scrappy, female warrior, since she herself was a survivor. I call her Gabby for short.

About Moonlight...Moonlight Designs, Inc. was started in 2002,

in upstate NY, as a part-time venture with my dream to one day make it a full-time business. The name “Moonlight” seemed appropriate since that’s what I was doing—

moonlighting. In 2004, I moved to North Carolina, which is when I decided to put all my efforts into turning this dream into a reality.

Early on, Moonlight Designs was fortunate to partner up with Forsyth Woman Magazine, then Forsyth Family Magazine. It has continued growing partnerships with other local publications, such as Sensible Shopper, Triad Biz, Forsyth Woman Engaged and I Do. Moonlight also has partnerships with publications in New York (LER) and Vermont. One of the nicest things about owning a business in Winston-Salem is getting to know the community and being able to give back. The longer I live here, the deeper my roots grow. I have come to know the people, the city and the community. I’m proud to call Winston-Salem my “home” now.
