BSBI’S CHAI LIGHTS

Rabbi’s Corner

As you read this article, the last I write as rabbi of Beth Sholom B’nai Israel, we

have or are just about to celebrate my

retirement. I will go out on a limb to say that the celebratory Shabbat was

spectacular and I am very grateful to

everyone who made it possible. Being the rabbi of this community has

been both a privilege and a pleasure. As I look back over 37

years and wonder where the time has flown, I recall

moments of joy and sadness, triumphs and challenges. So many memories flood my mind at this time; it is nearly

impossible to pinpoint what the high points have been. Surely, among them have been the trips to Israel we have

made together. What a joy getting to know so many of you better in the land of our ancestors and being able to share

with you my passion for Jewish State. Last month, as we

celebrated Yom HaAtzmaut, over 100 people strong, dancing and singing, I felt an amazing pride in the

knowledge that I put Israel on so high a place in our

congregational agenda. How many times in 37 years have we gathered for prayer?

Most satisfying for me about those times is the fact that our

congregation is so participatory. When we gather on

weeknights, Shabbat and holidays, it is not a performance, it is true communal davening, and that is a joy. Just two

weeks ago we celebrated our annual Torah Shabbat. How

satisfying it is to know that we as a congregation have studied Torah with some of the greatest scholars of our

generation. Over the years, our work in Tikun Olam has increased and grown remarkably. How wonderful it is to be in a

congregation that understands the importance of Chesed

and participates so readily in fulfilling those mitzvot. These

achievements were all possible because of the many hard working volunteers who make our congregation a true

Kehillah Kedoshah, the holy community that it is.

Words from the President

Dear Congregants,

By the time you read this message, we

will be welcoming Rabbi Randall Konigsburg as our new spiritual leader,

with his wife Michelle. Rabbi Konigsburg

was a unanimous choice of our search

committee and the board, and we feel he and his wife Michelle will be a wonderful

diligently for over a year and has now resulted in a fantastic couple joining our congregation. I would

congregation. I decided to accept the Presidency, because I felt that

together, we could be innovative, creative and continue to move our congregation forward. I was so pleased with the

attendance and enthusiasm these past few months, as we

welcomed visiting Rabbis to our congregation. As I sat in services I felt the warmth and fellowship of worshiping

together. I hope we can continue this momentum. I am

And last but certainly not least I want to personally thank Rabbi Plavin for all his years of service and his devotion to

our congregation and community, and wish him well in his

Torah Fund and Shavuot

Desserts: Learn about Victor

and Lieba’s Volunteer Work in

Israel Victor and Lieba Bernstein have

spent most of the month of May

in Ra’anana, Israel, volunteering at Beit Issie Shapiro, working

with disabled children in a very

special setting. They will be

sharing some of their fulfilling

experiences with us on the

second night of Shavuot,

Sunday, June 12th

, at 7:30 pm, at a pot-luck dessert program at

the home of Rabbi and Lisa

Plavin, at 488 East Center

Street, Manchester. They are doing this presentation as part of

our BSBI Shavuot night

celebration, as well as to help

draw attention to the annual

Women’s League Torah Fund

campaign, which raises money

for the Conservative Movement’s

seminaries in New York, Los

Angeles, and Jerusalem, as well

as in Buenos Aires, and, in July

2017, in Potsdam, Germany. We hope you will be able to join

us for this exciting event! The

Rabbi and Lisa have graciously

offered their home for this two-

in-one program. We will

incorporate our Torah Fund

Dessert and program into a pot-

luck dessert and study session for

Shavuot. All are welcome,

whether men or women,

Sisterhood members or not, and

whether donating to Torah Fund or not. Attendees should respond

to Lisa at [email protected] to

let her know what kosher dessert

they will be bringing. Questions?

Call Judy Meyer, 644-9271.

Because we cannot collect money

on Shavuot, we request that

people who wish to donate to Torah Fund do so by June 9th. A

donation payable to "Torah

Fund," in any amount from $18

to $180 or more, can be mailed to

Sylvia Cheerman, 31 Laurel

Terrace, Manchester, CT

06040. Please include your

name, address, phone, and

email. A donation of

$180 will earn

the donor a beautiful Torah

Fund pin or

pendant with the

"Nat'ah Karem" logo showing a

bountiful cluster of grapes. This

phrase, which means “she plants

a vineyard,” is our Women’s

League Torah Fund theme for

this year; it is taken from Verse

7 of the beloved “Eishet Chayil”

prayer, often sung to wives at the Shabbat dinner table. With this

pin, Women’s League honors the

productivity, generosity, and

independence of women who

contribute to our fundraising

effort. Are You Saving Those Soda

Can Tabs? We hope that you are. Sisterhood

and BSBI USY'ers are collecting

them for Ronald McDonald

House fundraising. You can bring all that you have saved in

sandwich bags to any of our

meetings or you can put them in

the box on the bookcase in the

BSBI lobby. Please note: tabs

ONLY, no bottle caps. The tabs are delivered to the

Ronald McDonald House in

Springfield, MA. The aluminum

tabs are sold, and the money

received is used to buy items for the House which

provides free overnight stays for families of sick

children. Sally’s Summer Splash Sally Ivaldi opens her home to us every summer for

“Sally’s Summer Splash.” This year it will be held on

Sunday, August 7, from 11:30 am - 3:00 pm. The event is

open to any and all of BSBI’s women, from 18 - 108 and then some. Bring your bathing suits, enjoy a light lunch

and a dip in the pool, all courtesy of Sally and of course,

the company of our great ladies. RSVP to Sally, [email protected] or 860-647-8186.

Her home is at 16 Pine Hurst, Glastonbury, CT.

Brotherhood Corner Phil Margolis, Brotherhood President

Meet the new leader of the

Connecticut ADL Think anti-Semitism and ethnic hatred

is dead? Unfortunately, we see reports

that hatred against Jews and others is alive and well. Additionally, one can

often see anti-Semitism in some anti-

Israel rhetoric. Join us on Sunday

morning, June 5th

to meet Steve

Ginsberg, director

of the Connecticut

Regional Office of

the Anti-

Defamation

League. Mr. Ginsburg joined

ADL after serving as Principal at

Mission Measurement – a firm that

works with foundations, corporations and

nonprofits to predict and maximize their

effectiveness and ROI (return on

investment). Prior to that, he was

Director of Development for ADL’s

Greater Chicago/Upper Midwest Region,

one of ADL’s largest offices. Mr.

Ginsburg also served as Chief Legal Counsel to the Office of the Governor of

the State of Illinois, and helped run the

American Bar Association Rule of Law

reform project in Sarajevo, Bosnia-

Herzegovina, in the late 1990s. Our breakfast and meeting starts at 9:30

AM, and it is free for members and

prospective members. Everyone is

welcome to join us for the speaker

beginning at 10:30 AM.

Do you eat dinner? The Brotherhood’s largest fundraiser is

the Todd Abitz Memorial Golf

Tournament, which will be held this

year on Wednesday, June 15th at Blackledge Country Club in Hebron. It

helps brings together the community to

help East-of-the-River people in need.

Event proceeds help the Hockanum

Valley Community Council provide

individuals and families with food,

transportation, mental health and other

services so that they can remain

independent, and BSBI Brotherhood,

for our support of the synagogue and

the community at large.

We really need your

help to make this a

success. If you play

golf, please consider

taking the afternoon

and playing the

tournament. It is a day

of fun and full of food,

drink, golf and lots of

goodies.

Don’t play golf? No problem. We have

dinner beginning about 5:00 PM. Please join us for an enjoyable Kosher dinner

catered by Abel Caterers. We also need

volunteers. Volunteering is fun, and a

great way to meet others from the

synagogue. Please see the enclosed flyer for more

details. Anyone interested in

volunteering should contact Ron

Abrahams at [email protected] .

Rabbi’s Corner, cont’d.

On this occasion I want to recount just some of my blessings. Beyond any doubt, my greatest

blessing has been my life partner,

Lisa. I don’t know what my life would have been without her, but

surely I am a better man because of

her. Her wisdom, sensitivity and creativity have all contributed to

making this community a better

place and me a better rabbi. Words

fail me to express my thankfulness for the blessing Lisa has been in my

life. My children are an amazing blessing. The way they live, the

spouses they have chosen, and the

way they raise our grandchildren, imbued with a love of Torah and

mitzvot, are a joy to behold and

gives new meaning to the concept of

Nachat. Finally, my dear community – all of

you – you have indeed been a

blessing. Being with you in moments of joy and in mourning,

through multiple generations, has

been a significant privilege and source of deep satisfaction. May you

all share the feeling of blessing I am

enjoying at this time. With blessings and affection,

This May, incoming BSBI President Ron Abrahams (pictured right)

joined other presidents and president-elects of conservative synagogues

around the country at the Pearlstone Retreat Center outside of Baltimore,

MD for a leadership retreat sponsored by USCJ's Sulam for Presidents

program. This initiative helps provide presidents with the tools they need

to be successful leaders in their community while giving them a chance to

recovery from my fall.

It was all very much

appreciated.

Jaiden Gabrielle Libow Bat Mitzvah

June 11, 2016 – 9:45 AM

Jaiden Libow will be called to the

Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on June 11,

2016. Her parents, Joya and Jamie

Libow, along with proud younger

brother Jack, are looking forward to celebrating Jaiden’s milestone with

family, friends and the congregation. Jaiden attends Timothy Edwards

Middle School in South Windsor, and

excels in all subjects. She is a very

disciplined student and has made

honor roll in both 6th and 7th grade. Jaiden has many

interests including chorus at her middle school, along with

taking piano and dance lessons outside of school. In fact, she

will be performing in a dance recital the week before her Bat

Mitzvah. That should warm her up for being in front of a lot

of people for her big day at the Bimah! Jaiden will be adding a second dance class and will be

continuing her Jewish studies next fall. Jaiden is also a very

family oriented girl, and opted for a family cruise to Alaska

(along with both of her grandmothers) rather than having a

large Bat Mitzvah party.

BSBI Community

Celebrate Shavuot Sunday evening, June 12th – 7:30 PM

Our Shavuot night study session this year is going to be very different than what has been done in prior years. Rather than gathering at the synagogue for the service and study session, the entire program will take place at the home of Rabbi and Lisa Plavin, 488 East Center Street, Manchester. The evening will combine delicious desserts, Torah study, a brief prayer service, and wonderful fellowship. Additionally, there will be a presentation by Lieba and Victor Bernstein, who will have just returned from three weeks of volunteer work at Beit Issie Shapiro. This is an institution in Ra’nanah, Israel, that develops and provides innovative therapies and services for children with disabilities and their families. This presentation will be this year’s Torah Fund program. For those who wish to support our Conservative seminaries, please make your Torah Fund donations payable to "Torah Fund," sending it before Shavuot (checks will not be accepted that night as it is a holiday) to Sylvia Cheerman, 31 Laurel Terrace, Manchester, CT 06040 On Shavuot we celebrate God’s revelation of the Torah to the Jewish people at Mt. Sinai. The traditional custom is to stay up the entire first night of the holiday studying Torah in a session called “Tikun Leil Shavuot.” We will have a "Token-Tikun," studying for just 90 minutes or so, and do so this year on the second night of Shavuot, Sunday, June 12th. The refreshments for this program will be pot-luck desserts. Please email Lisa at [email protected] to RSVP and let her know what you will be bringing. We will need dessert items and beverages. Items may be brought in from kosher homes or purchased with a kashrut symbol. Our study material for the Tikun will be legends concerning what happened at Sinai on that fateful 6th of Sivan some 3,000 years ago. According to one legend, we were all there. But just in case your memory of the event has gotten hazy, we will have an opportunity for a refresher. Plan to join us. We would love to host you in our home. Rabbi Richard Plavin

will bring them to the Manchester Area Conference

of Churches and the Hockanum Valley Community

Council food pantries. Also, if you like to work outside, consider helping out

with Jessie's Garden at BSBI. Jessie was a young

woman who passed away at the age of 26, and her

family planted this program in her memory. Many

synagogues in the area have similar gardens, and the

harvest goes to local food pantries. People really

appreciate having fresh fruits and vegetables as a

supplement to all the nonperishables that come

in. To get involved in Jessie's Garden at BSBI, see

the box on page 8 and contact Laurie Bayer at

[email protected] or Manny Lerman at [email protected]. You'll be glad you did!

First Day of School!

Sunday, September 11th 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

When you receive your registration form for the 2016-2017 school year, please respond as soon as possible so that we can plan accurately for the next school year.

LOOKING FOR NEW GARDENERS No Experience Necessary!

We planted the Temple garden, "Jessie's Community Garden" on Sunday, May 15. I'll be scheduling the volunteers to keep the garden going again this year, and hope you are willing to volunteer for a week or so (Sunday through Friday). It should be easier this year as the Temple custodian will be watering the garden on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, so the responsibility of the volunteers will be to weed,

harvest, and deliver the produce to either MACC or HVCC. This will mean that you will only need to check the garden once or twice a week during the weeks you volunteer (and water only if the garden looks dry). The garden will be in operation from the week of May 15th, until the week of September 25th. We will be happy to orient you for the specifics of how, what, when, where. Please reply to me by email at [email protected] indicating whether or not you are willing to participate this year, the number of weeks you are willing to take, and if you know, which weeks you will be available. I'll then get back to you with a schedule,

THIS IS A GREAT FAMILY ACTIVITY!!! THIS IS A PEACEFUL AND GRATIFYING ACTIVITY FOR ANYONE AND

EVERYONE!!! Looking forward to a productive garden year. Manny Lerman

Thank you to all who participated in Mitzvah Day. Even the weather cooperated! Our Jessie's Garden is planted

with kale, green beans, cucumbers, peppers and eggplant. We had ten singers at Manchester Manor!!The

toiletries are packed with care and ready for delivery. The BSBI gardens are weeded and mulched and look

beautiful.

For more information on how you can help out

with Jessie’s Garden over the summer, turn

to page 8.
