Are panic attacks a lack of faith? Is any type of anxiety considered sin?

Last week, in Daily Disciples Bible Study Group, one of the woman shared that the day before she became lightheaded and her arms were tinkling from her neck to her fingers. She believed she was going to pass out at the wheel. She stopped at a McDonald’s and the manager immediately called the paramedics. After being admitted to the emergency room, she was diagnosed with panic attacks. Her prayer request was that she would not worry and she felt horribly guilty of being in sin. Is worrying sin? Is any type of anxiety considered sin? Are you in greater sin if it leads to a panic attack? While studying Romans 5, the teaching focused on verse 1: “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Having peace with God means we are justified by our faith in believing Jesus Christ is our Lord who saved us from sin so we can be in relationship with God. Peace with God means we can enter into relationship with the Living, One and Only God who created the heavens, the earth and all the things of the earth. Peace with God means He loves us so richly and intensely that His kindness leads us back to Him as we continue to fall short and acknowledge our sin to Him. Peace with God means that no longer do we need to embrace condemnation because of the wrong and bad things we have done or because of all the ways we have failed in our past and present decisions. He made a way for us to have peace with Him starting on this earth as it will be in heaven forever and ever. This peace is given because of Jesus and this peace is not based on our righteousness but on our faith in Him. To Him be the glory. Through Him, we live and move and have our being. God loves the world that He gave us …JESUS. “Peace be with you.”

Peace with God does not mean we will not panic at times or that we will have absence of conflict. It means in the midst of life’s turmoils and tribulations, we can rejoice because our peace with God is not hindered or quenched. He is constantly in love with us and He is consistently willing to stay in relationship with us despite what we do or who we are. We are told in Luke 2:14, “…and on earth peace among those with whom He

is pleased!”

How is He pleased? Through our faith in believing Jesus Christ is Savior and Lord. Do you please the Lord through your belief? If not, ask Him to help your unbelief. God desires a peaceful relationship with you. Isn’t that awesome! The strange thing is that we hear the desire of the people on this earth to have world peace. Well, what did people do when Peace was walking on earth? Killed Him on a cross. The only peace we receive on earth will be through the relationship we have with Jesus. Keep praying, keep seeking and keep knocking. It is at His feet that we sense His presence. It is at His feet that His Peace becomes louder than our words.

Tonilee Adamson is continuing in Seminary. After completing the requirements for the Master of Ministry, she prayerfully decided to acquire the Master of Divinity. Tonilee consults when asked and specializes in hospital visitations, Biblical counseling, and performing funerals and weddings. Coming soon: a private online group hosted by Tonilee to assist with the healing of abuse, divorce, death and depression. Many women have asked her to share from the heart about private matters. She knows it is time to comfort others with the comfort she received from the Lord (as well as others).
