Features20 An Interview with Daniel Radcliffe

For years, this young actor has thrilled audiences with the escapades of his most famous character – Harry Potter. Film Critic Nick Nicholson met and visited with the twenty-one-year-old phenom from the Harry Potter saga. What he found was a globally famous young actor who is extraordinarily talented, extremely thankful and remarkably well-grounded.

44 A Shining Star…at SixteenIn her brief sixteen years, Cierra Ramirez has quite a list of accomplishments. From starring in a Disney television series to roles on CSI Miami and Desperate Housewives to the big screen, for this young Houstonian, the future looks bright. Nick Nicholson talked with the up and coming actress about where she’s been, and more importantly, where she’s going.

Though Tina Koenig began her career as an engineer at an engineering and construction fi rm, she’s still using those skills in her life’s passion: teaching and caring for children at her own school. At Primrose School of First Colony, Tina builds character while teaching the A,B,C’s and 1,2,3’s in a labor of love for children, community and most importantly, character.

Texas Direct Auto Partners with “Lunches of Love”

Texas Direct Auto, the nations largest indepen-dent car dealership, will participate this summer in “Lunches of Love,” a community outreach program which provides lunches to low income children in the Richmond Rosenberg area. “When we learned about the care and hope that ‘Lunches of Love’ and it’s volunteers provide these children, we were com-mitted instantly to supporting the program,” said Jessica DeMarr, Director of Business Development for Texas Direct Auto.

“‘Lunches of Love’ is very blessed and excited to have the opportunity to partner with Texas Direct Auto. Their bighearted donation is approximately 25% of our annual budge. This to me is phenomenal!”, said Adriane Gray with “Lunches of Love.”

“Lunches of Love,” developed in 2009 by First United Methodist Church in Rosenberg, provides a nutritious sack lunch to low income elementary children and their siblings during the long breaks from school. With a large percentage of the children in this area on free and reduced lunches at school, most of the children would go hungry during extended holidays when these services are not available. “Lunches of Love” is committed to helping end the hunger of these children by operating Monday through Friday during Christmas Break, Spring Break, and Summer vacation.

“Lunches of Love” currently provides service to children

at two local elementary schools and plans to expand to more elementary schools as funding allows. Volunteers can assist in many ways such as collecting food, assembling the lunches, and delivering.

The sack lunches cost less than $0.65 per lunch and consists of a main entrée (sandwich, hot dog,

or wrap), Goldfi sh, crackers or pretzels, fruit, yogurt or jello and water or juice.

Texas Direct Auto will participate by providing the lunches for all 762 children for the entire month of June for a total of 14,478 lunches. “Their kindness and generosity will help the program continue feeding these children in need,” said Gray.

This wonderful ministry has enriched many lives of the students and

families they have helped as well as all of the volunteers it takes to run the program.

If you are interested in making a difference in your community, local business, organizations,

groups, troops and friends are all welcome to be a part of a growing community outreach program.

“We can make a difference in a child receiving a nutritious lunch or going to bed hungry,” said Gray.

Please contact Adriane Gray at 281.342.3333 or [email protected] with any questions or if you are interested in being a volunteer. Visit www.lunchesofl ove.net to see how you can help end child hunger.

10 focus on women l June / Ju ly 2011

M y baby turned 12 years-old in May. It was certainly a monumental occasion in our family but perhaps

more so for me. As mothers, we love to see our children grow up, and at the same, we hate the fact that they are growing up. Selfi shly, we hold on to our babies thrilled with their achievements as they grow but truly saddened by the fact that the days of them cuddling in our laps are passing far too quickly. So now, my baby is 12, and my daughter is a teenager. Needless to say, the next few years in our home will be fi lled with adventures I’m not at all certain that I am ready for.

For mothers, raising children into productive, well-rounded, moral and kind adults is paramount. No other project, business or volunteer endeavor is ever as important as making every effort to insure that we’re doing the very best we can with our children. And, let me be frank: it’s not easy. It is the most consuming, joyous, tearful, frustrating and magnifi cent task we undertake in our lives. Fortunately, we have some excellent resources to help us be successful along the way.

In this issue, you’ll meet Tina Koenig who is just such a resource. For working parents, this educated professional is dedicated to providing much more than child care at her school. She is devoted to providing an educational experience focusing on one of the most important aspects of childhood development to us moms: character development. Tina’s investment in her community – and her school full of “cutie patooties” – is both a resource and an example to us all.

While we can’t help but worry about our youngsters, there are many young people out there serving as shining examples. In our interview with Daniel Radcliffe, perhaps better known as Harry Potter, you will read about a young man who has achieved great success and remains humble and appreciative of the opportunities he’s been given. I think Daniel said it best when talking about himself and fellow cast. “The fact that we’ve all come through and remained who we are and not become horrible nightmares, I think, says a lot about our parents, the crew and everyone associated with these eight fi lms.” Good job, mom and dad.

Sixteen-year-old Cierra Ramirez is already a television and movie star. The young Houstonian is bright, respectful, and full of both optimism and thanks for the opportunities she’s had. Focused on hard work and staying away from the negativity that can be associated with Hollywood, Cierra is very grounded, focused on enjoying her work and is extremely close to her mom. Great kid – great mom.

The Greek philosopher Socrates said, “I know that I am intelligent because I know that I know nothing.” I admit that in what is clearly the most important role in my life – that of a mother – I, many times, feel as if I know nothing. I still lament the day I brought my daughter home from the hospital without a comprehensive, illustrated book of instructions. After all, you buy any toy, car seat or kitchen appliance, and what does it come with? You got it – instructions. You may not be able to decipher them, but at least you’ve got them if you need them.

Sometimes it’s trial and error, sometimes it’s sage advice from generations who have been there, and sometimes, it’s just luck. We all strive to raise the bar in building character and content in future generations, and fortunately for us, some are able to achieve these goals. Yes, despite what we see on reality tv, the future does look bright in many of the youngsters we have – and are – raising. We are raising the bar on their expectations, dreams and realities by showing them and serving as examples. Whether we know anything – or know nothing – we are all learning as we go.

Stay focused!

Tina Koenig Enjoys Successin SecondCareer

A fter a successful career at Fluor, Tina Koenig followed her true passion in life. Now, she is living her combined dream of owning a business and working with children as the co-owner of Primrose School of First Colony along with her husband, Matt.

When she told family, friends and coworkers that she was planning on owning a school, most of the response she received was surprise. Some were shocked. “Many had no idea that I had aspirations to own my own business,” said Tina. “Many were surprised to hear that a person with my Engineering/IT background would be interested in working with children!”

Most people didn’t know that Tina had originally wanted to be a teacher. She acknowledges that her degree in engineering and work experience at Fluor opened the door for her to learn so many things that have made her successful today.

“There are a few key people in my career who gave me a chance and taught me so many of the business

management skills that I needed to be where I am today. Paul Marriott at Fluor taught me scheduling, cost control, project management, and the importance of material presentation. Jay Joiner at Fluor taught me not to limit myself and gave me the opportunity to grow beyond what my degree said I should be. My dad, John Kress, taught me the importance of expecting the best from myself and that education opens doors.”

“I was extremely nervous and excited about switching careers. I felt like I ‘grew up’ at Fluor. I was there for nearly ten years, straight out of college. I had many mentors and friends there, and I felt as if I was leaving my family. I call the day that I left ‘Jump Day’…that was the day that I took a leap of faith to leave my home at Fluor and start off on this new adventure. I was nervous about taking on the new challenge of owning my own business. Would I succeed or fail? I had

no idea, but I knew that I wanted to take a chance on myself. I loved Primrose and thought that it was a spectacular opportunity for me.”

On November 14, 2005, Tina and Matt Koenig’s dream of owning their own business became a reality when they purchased Primrose School of First Colony in Sugar Land. They enrolled their oldest son, Brandon, shortly afterwards; later their second son, James, joined the infant class.

Tina always had a love of children and remembers “playing school” when she was a little girl; she leaned towards education for her college career. However, her parents steered her in a different direction, and she studied ocean engineering at Texas A & M University.

At TAMU, she volunteered in elemen-tary schools, assisting in kindergarten and 4th grade classes. She met Matt at TAMU; he was also studying ocean engineering. She graduated in 1996 and began working at Fluor in Sugar Land as did Matt after he graduated.

When Tina became pregnant, the couple contemplated how to raise their child. “I grew up with my mom working and attended Tee Pee Day Care in Houston -- Matt grew up with his mom caring for him at home,” said Tina. “Since our experiences were so different, we decided to research childcare options.”

A friend from Fluor recommended Primrose. “When we visited Primrose, I knew it was the school for us. The school was clean, the campus beautiful, and the owners were very warm and loving. As I had this side interest in education, I was drawn to the advanced curriculum being taught. Another important component for me was the focus on character development that Primrose had. For me, leaving my child in school meant that there would be a true benefi t to him educationally, and I wanted him to grow up with core values that were important to me…and Primrose had it all!”

“Matt and I had always dreamed of owning our own business, but what type was never clear. Eventually, it dawned on us that

P rimrose School of First Colony utilizes a character development program in its curriculum called Posies and

Pollywogs. Through discussion, arts and crafts, puppet play, games, and role-playing, children are encouraged to share thoughts on moral concepts and values such as honesty, compassion, respect and good judgment.

The school also focuses on community awareness through its Helping Hands program. Tina and Matt Koenig take it a step further with their community support.

Primrose School uses Balanced Learning® curriculum blending the two leading philosophies of teaching children.

One philosophy endorses a child-initiated approach in which children are free to explore their individual interests with teacher support. The other places a greater emphasis on teacher direction, where an established curriculum leads children along a consistent learning path.

Primrose School combines the best of both philosophies. Each child’s interest serves as the springboard to healthy social, emotional, physical and academic development, while teachers guide them to self assurance and prepare them for lifelong academic and social success.

we should be a part of Primrose as owners as well as parents.” At fi rst, when they contacted Primrose, there were no opportunities for them in Texas. They would have to move out of state, which they didn’t want to do with a new baby. The couple kept meeting with Primrose and eventually some existing schools became available for sale in Texas, then in Houston, and eventually in Sugar Land. “We felt that our path was being laid out for us,” said Tina.

“For us, quality of care is mandatory…it is a given. We expect the same quality of care for all of our children, and the standard is very high. From there, with love, you can provide the children a wonderful education while they are having fun,” said Tina.

“I attended Franchisee training with Primrose Schools for three weeks. Over the last fi ve plus years, I have obtained my Director’s credential and have taken many hours of training in childcare and business management courses. Each year, I also attend Primrose School’s University and Conference to gain additional knowledge regarding our fabulous Primrose Program. Most of my knowledge in childcare has come from Primrose and our school’s director, Brenda White. Running our school with Brenda to Primrose standards elevated my knowledge of education and childcare.”

Tina says what she enjoys most about her new career is meeting new families and children. “I love the children that we have at our school. I consider every child that attends our school to be a part of our Primrose Family. I love the relationships that we have with our families. I also enjoy all of the activities our school does to support our community and charities. I really enjoy seeing our curriculum programming in action, and love to work with teachers to perfect their implementation. Primrose Schools is always setting trends in education, and I love to be a part of that. Our curriculum is highly advanced, and I’m thrilled that we are planning to implement a new music program for our upcoming academic year.”

“When we look for teachers, we are always looking at the heart of the person. A teacher must have a loving heart and drive to give their best to children every day. We attract wonderful teachers with excellent backgrounds. We are very proud of our school!”

Tina suggests that someone thinking about owning a private preschool should have the right heart as well as a good business mind. Decisions about the school should always be made in the best interest of the children. “It’s important to us that we know that we’ve done our best daily for them. We strive for excellence in all that we do,” she said.

“We love being a part of the Sugar Land community and seeing our children and their parents out and about. We see them at church, the grocery store, the movies, volunteering at events and more. We get to see our infl uence in the world every day in the children.”

When people ask how many children she has, Tina responds: “I have three of my own and a school full of other cutie patooties! Brandon (7) loves Primrose and the teachers he has grown up with over the years. Our two younger children, James (21 mos.) and Lana (3 mos.) love their classes, friends and teachers.”

Tina says her biggest adjustment as a business owner is the amount of time she spends on work. “My schedule is very

fl exible, yet it fl exes based upon the needs of the school. Operation of the school takes precedence over all else. My time is dedicated to the school. I am physically at the school every day, my family attends a lot of community events, and we volunteer a signifi cant amount. Most of my time is spent working on school activities. The school is now a huge component of who I am as a person, and if I am not actively working in it or on tasks for it, I feel out of place.”

“My husband and I are much stronger as a couple as a result of owning the school. We support each other through any diffi cult times that arise. We are an excellent team, and have always been great friends.”

“Professionally, I feel that I have to multi-task a signifi cant amount. To be successful, I have a strong management team that I am continually mentoring and training so that we all work as a cohesive unit. I also have a fabulous teaching staff who love children, provide excellent care and education to the students. I am successful as a result of the Primrose team I have surrounded myself with.”

feature By Nick Nicholson

D aniel Radcliffe could easily be a snooty little punk. After all, Radcliffe is twenty-one, a multi-

millionaire, and he’s famous in every corner of the globe because director Chris Columbus cast him as Harry Potter over a decade ago. But he’s not a diva. In fact, he’s as far from that label as possible. Here’s an example of who Radcliffe is: While on the set of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows earlier this year, I was waiting with a few other press members for Radcliffe to arrive for an interview. He was running a bit late and when he finally showed up, he had run to meet us and after catching his breath, he apologized because he felt bad for making us wait. I’ve done a lot of set visits when someone is running late, but I’ve never seen the main star run to do an interview and then apologize. But that’s who Radcliffe is.

During the interview, Radcliffe talked about the final installment and what it meant to him, is he comfortable being known as Harry Potter for the rest of his life, what was his reaction to reading The Deathly Hallows for the first time, and so much more.

FOW: You’ve come to the end of the journey now, and we’ve basically watched you and some of the other actors grow up on-screen. And, they’ve become kind of like a family to you I’m sure. I know it’s hard to encapsulate what that means to you, but how do you feel about it? Has it sunk in or do you not think about it yet?

Daniel Radcliffe: I’m thinking about it off and on. It’s very odd and very upsetting because I’ve spent so much time here and

made some fantastic friends who I hope will stay with me for the rest of my life. And so yeah, it’s very sad but equally it is an exciting time. I suppose whenever you go through periods of transition or in a way it’s a very definite closing of a certain chapter of your life. I suppose those times are always going to be both very upsetting and also very exciting by the very nature because things are changing and you don’t know what’s going to happen.

FOW: Could you talk about when you received the seventh book and your reaction to reading both it and the epilogue for the first time?

Radcliffe: Yeah, I obviously loved the seventh book as much as everybody else did. I was reading actually at a cricket match because it came out two days before my 18th birthday. And, I was going to a match for my birthday. So I was going around for two days without having read it where everybody else was. It was a two day-long struggle begging not to get told the ending. I remember finishing it on the plane and just becoming very emotional. I found it’s a very moving book. The epilogue was something that I liked. I know not everybody did at all, but it was actually something I didn’t have a problem with. And, it’s tying together all those loose ends. Because the thing is,

what people don’t realize about the epilogue is I think that if Jo Rowling hadn’t written that epilogue, can you imagine being her for the rest of her life and having to cope with questions about what did Harry go on to do with his life? She has to give something to just shut people up aside from everything else. There had to be some sort of conclusion to the story.

FOW: Let’s talk about the film and the enormous amount of physical action you were subjected to, not to mention the emotional arcs Harry had to experience.

Radcliffe: Well, the thing that is probably the most important and featured in the first half of book seven is Harry’s relationship

with Dumbledore despite the fact that Dumbledore is dead. Because Harry’s constantly finding out new information about Dumbledore, information which pertains to both the very specific situation that Harry is in and what Harry’s mission is, causes everyone to question him and puts him under scrutiny. Harry has to keep faith with Dumbledore, above all else. It is Harry’s belief in Dumbledore that drives him to find his innocence.

FOW: That sounds right. Can you expand on that a bit more?

Radcliffe: Sure. Historically it’s never been a good thing to compare yourself to biblical characters. The whole series for me is about loss of innocence and about Harry going from this kind of wide-eyed child and turning into this slightly grizzled young man by the end of it. Although, as I was saying to people the other day, it is essential that he does not turn into a man necessarily in the film because what makes all that fight stuff at the end so powerful and so kind of horrible to watch is the fact that you’re seeing a kid get beaten up by a very strong, very angry man.

FOW: Can you talk about the overall pride that you have for the series and what you and everyone have been able to accomplish, as it is simply amazing?

Radcliffe: Thank you very much. I think it is too. These are films that are some of the highest grossing films ever. I think that is amazing, and we have to maintain the level of enthusiasm and energy and the attention for detail that we have over all of these films. I do think that the people we have to worked with have always had an incredible attitude. There has never been a comment like, “Oh, that’ll be good enough.” The attitude with our crew has always been “not only must the job be done, it must be done excellently.” That’s

Continued from page 21

the point about these films, and I think everybody’s achieved that. I think that is the way that we’ve managed to navigate through these years so far quite well in terms of the cast and the young cast given what a lot of people might have expected of us at the very beginning. The fact that we’ve all come through and remained who we are and not become horrible nightmares, I think, says a lot about our parents, the crew and everyone associated with these eight films.

FOW: Are you comfortable with the association you’ll have for the rest of your life with Harry and this series?

Radcliffe: Harry Potter is one thing I will recognize for the rest of my life. I would not have these opportunities if not for Harry Potter. It would be the pure definition of ingratitude if I were ever anything but proud to be associated with this character or these films.

FOW: Can you reflect on the relationship you have with Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, and how it’s evolved over the past decade?

Radcliffe: It has been great. We all have been great friends. We also have the knowledge that no matter what happens in the rest of our lives, no one will have had this particular experience other than the three of us. The memories of working together over the past eight films will be something that will never, ever leave us.

The problem has been called a variety of names (Classic Silver Spoon Mentality, Affl uenza, Entitlementitis, Spoiled Brat,

Monetarily Mangled). The essential element is the belief that one deserves the best of almost everything without having to earn it. Something I call quid pro nihilo as opposed to quid pro quo, something for nothing rather than some-thing for something. There is a failure to accept that things must be earned -- disbelief in the Principle of Mutual Interchange. The usual jus-tifi cation for receiving a reward is that somebody else has it. “Jimmy is getting a new Porsche; I should at least have a new car.” “Everybody else has a laptop; I should too.” Commonly, children with this behavior are called ‘spoiled.’ They may lack empathy and become totally absorbed in satisfying their own desires. Because of this, the child may become exploitative of his parents as well as others.

What are the long-term consequences? If not checked, this attribute will develop

into a personality style which will remain throughout life.

• Financial Illiteracy - inability to manage money.

• Irresponsibility - inability to organize ones

activities to gainfully accomplish life goals.• Disturbed Relationships - using others as

objects to gratify his needs without giving up anything in return.

• Unhappiness - long-term dissatisfactionwith failure.

• Alcohol and Drug Abuse - trying to fi llthe empty space left by the perception that he has been treated unfairly by the world.

• Externalization of Blame - the individualnever learns his own part in causing prob-lems and solutions.

• Frustration Intolerance - due to continuedblaming and feeling not in control of the situation.

• Impulse Control Problems - due toa combination of immaturity in delaying gratifi cation, anger, and unhappiness.

• Frequent Anger/Rage - secondary to frus-tration intolerance and externalization of blame.

• Idealization/Devaluation - secondary toexternalization of credit and blame.

• Grandiose Fantasies - to avoid overwhelm-ing anxiety and emptiness.

Principles to Teach and Learn• Learning to take in information rather than

going to instant debate. • Delayed gratifi cation. • Teaching impulsivity avoidance. • Learning to prioritize.• Learning not to ruminate about

inconsequential matters.• Learning to stay within age appropriate

boundaries. • Learning to deal with frustration in

socially acceptable ways.• Learning self-reinforcement for

appropriate behavior. • Becoming coach and cheerleader.• Learning to view others with empathy

and seeing things from their point of view.• Developing a balance between giving

and receiving. When to Contact a Professional

If the parents are unable to correct the entitlement behavior through teaching, a profes-sional consultation is advisable.

Woman Woman

W2W I By Alisa Murray

C an you write your own obituary? Yes. I said obituary! Write it, go ahead. It won’t kill you! While

you’re contemplating all the things that you have done, step back for a few minutes, and write everything you should have done. I know, I know.... Many of you are now asking yourselves, “What?!”

Do it. You’ll be surprised. Are there people in your life that need to be forgiven? Are there hobbies that should have been cultivated into meaningful careers? Did you squander your life away fi lling your days with deeply seated resentment over circumstances and people that are not in your control? I know, I know.... This task that I am asking of you is not a comfortable one. But truly, I say it must be done. You ask why? Because it will one day be what it is. As Warner Brothers says, “That’s all folks!”

An intricate part of living a full life, a life well-lived let’s say, is in the daily living. How you see the world is often times tainted with resentments of people who have somehow hurt you in the past. These turn into attitudes that keep us from living to our fullest potentials and can be toxic to our self esteem and relationships with others. It eats a nasty hole at our souls and spills over into the next generations.

A few months ago, I met with a good friend of mine. She came into the studio for a shoot, and as we began sharing and catching up, she mentioned that I might consider therapy. That kind of threw me for a loop because I felt like I was pretty grounded, and her point wasn’t that I was crazy but that there might be a few things lingering from my past that could be holding me back. After some thought, I agreed to go see a therapist.

Laila Narsi has been in practicing for almost 15 years working with adults from all walks of life. She does a lot of work with people who have had stress, trauma, depression, anxiety, history of abuse, grief and loss, and personality disorders. She teaches people to learn to live

mindfully creating a deeper level of awareness so that they can be their true, authentic selves.

“Therapy” for me did not turn out to be at all what I expected. I had done all of that working out the demons from childhood while studying and getting my own degree in psychology, and I thought, “Well, here goes nothing!” We talked about mother getting killed and how the adults handled the situation, and we talked about parenting and about marriage. We just talked, and one morning, she said, “You know Alisa, despite loosing both parents and dealing with trauma, you are fi ne!” Hearing that I was doing fi ne from a professional in the fi eld felt good. Not that I was surprised!

Over the years, I have watched my siblings deal with life in different ways. The biggest difference between me living a happy, successful life has been in my ability to not hold grudges and not live life with regrets. They are all at different stages in their lives and some are still angry. They still haven’t learned to let go.

Fred Luskin is a leader in the fi eld of forgiveness. He has written many books and has made great accomplishments with people struggling with what he calls “content” of how life has been dealt to them. Some feel like the world owes them because they had something bad happen. I remember feeling that way in my twenties. I was still fresh with resentments

about my father remarrying six months after my mother had been killed. And, married to a woman who did not love me. After years of being under her reign, I was married and free from anything she could do to me. I was angry, and during those years, my world was black and white.

As I got older and wiser, I fi gured out the only person being hurt or held back was me and that despite what she had or had not done, I alone was responsible for my decisions in life and that I had a choice. I could spend time living with deep seated resentments or I could forgive. When my father died suddenly and she kicked my grandmother out of the house at the age of 101, I felt a surge of venomous rage. It took a few years to control it, get my head wrapped around it and yes, eventually to forgive her. Luskin says we have to “accept the relationship as it is rather than wishing it were different.” I chose not to try any longer at making her be the mother that I felt she should be. She and she alone has that choice to make. I have chosen to accept her as she is.

Today I want you to spend a few minutes evaluating your psychological closet. Think about what you want to be and how as Laila says “you can live a more authentic self.”

So get to writing that obituary. Go on, and when you’re done, I want you to fl ip the page over so it turns out to be upside down on the other side in front of you.

Now. That’s better. Just a clean page and you. What will you do? It is you and you alone that has that choice!

Take Care of You!

‘T is the time for shorts and bikinis, and toned legs and glutes are must-have accessories for the summer season. In addition to looking amazing in your summer attire, leg toning is important to your overall physical health.

Toning your legs and glutes consists of building muscle while burning fat revealing firm leg muscles. With these toned summer legs, you will have more leg strength, less back strain, and better posture. This will help improve your self-esteem, encourage a healthy lifestyle, and add to the amount of cardio exercise you are able to do.

These three exercises target your core, quads, hamstrings, and glutes. Do these exercises two or three times a week (three sets of ten reps per set) to build and tone your legs and be toned just in time for summer!

Tips for Tony Summer Legs and Glutes…in Only 15 Minutes!

Lunge 1 and Lunge 2Start with your feet together and then, take a step forward with your right foot with a good amount of space in between your legs. Keep your upper body up and your shoulders back. Slowly take your body down towards the ground by bending your right knee but don’t allow your knee to go forward. You want to be able to see your toes on your right foot. Once both knees are at a 90 degree angle, slowly raise yourself back up without locking your knees. Repeat this nine more times and then, switch legs.

Deadlift 1 and Deadlift 2Stand with your feet shoulder width apart with your knees slightly bent. Hold 10 lb to 15 lb dumbbells in your hands in front of your body. Keep your shoulders back which will allow you to keep good posture throughout the exercise. Keeping your shoulders back and your back flat, from your hips slowly bend your upper body down towards the ground stopping slightly before your upper body is parallel to the ground. Tighten up your glutes and slowly raise your upper body until you are standing upright. Slowly repeat this nine more times.

Plié Squat 1 and Plié Squat 2Stand with your legs wider than shoulder width apart and your toes pointed out. Hold a 15 lb to 20 lb dumbbell in between your legs with your arms straight. Keeping your shoulders back and your chest up, slowly lower your body towards the ground keeping your glutes back like you are sitting in a chair. Once your legs are at 90 degree angles, slowly raise yourself back up in the starting position without locking your knees out. Repeat this slowly nine more times.

Storm Flags Flying

H ere on the Gulf Coast we prepare for hurricane season every May. It’s not something we look forward to. We’d rather

be planning our summer vacation to the beach or a Caribbean island. But it’s what you do to prepare.

Investing is much of the same. An old adage on Wall Street is sell in May and go away. This saying came about decades ago as traders in New York City would sell their positions in anticipation of spending the summer in the cooler environs of the Hampton’s. This was well before electronic trading and cell phones.

However, there is a great deal of truth that still guides human nature today. There are documented seasonal tendencies such as the best six months and the worst six months of the year. According to the Stock Trader’s Almanac, May through October is the worst six month period of the year. If you had invested $10,000 in the Dow Jones Industrial Average on May 1st and sold October 31st of every year since 1950 you would have lost $300 total over the past 61 years.

The above example is not an investment recommendation. However, a wise investor, just like a wise vacationer, plans for a hurricane this time of

year, even as they go about their everyday business. The most recent good period, November through

April, produced a very nice gain of over 15%. May, on the other hand, has not been very kind to investors so far. With the specter of potential European debt defaults and heated political rhetoric on the U.S. debt ceiling, it promises to be a very hot summer indeed.

Don’t despair, just prepare. The average American cannot afford to retire on just their savings. They must invest to accumulate wealth. Our goal is to help you prepare for your future even as the “storm flags are flying.”

If you’d like to learn more about the “good” period of investing, how we manage “hurricane season” or how to accumulate and maintain wealth, contact us at www.hardeeinvestmentgroup.com.

F or an increasing number of men, looking and feeling good is now as important as being successful in life.

Traditionally, women have been the ones to take advantage of products and treatments to help improve their appearance, reverse the signs of aging and cope with symptoms of menopause. A growing number of men are now realizing that they deserve to look and feel good as well and have been investing in quality skin care products, treatments such as Botox®, laser hair removal and hormone balancing for Andropause.

Not long ago, wrinkles were thought of as the masculine signs of wisdom and maturity. That sentiment is changing as more and more men are now seeking treatment for these wrinkles with Botox®. Motivation for treatments include the desire to not look tired or angry, to look better for social and romantic ends, wanting to look as youthful as their wives who have already

benefi ted from these services, and perhaps most importantly, the desire to remain competitive in the workplace, especially during diffi cult economic times. Having spent hundreds of dollars on expensive suits, shoes and haircuts, more and more men are realizing the value of investing in services that can help them look and feel good every single day.

Many men stop feeling good about themselves when they suffer from decreased libido and energy. Ever notice how frequently commercials for Viagra and Cialis are aired during sports’ broadcasts? Unfortunately, these pills only address the symptom and not the root cause of the sexual dysfunction for many men. Between the years of 40 and 55, men begin experiencing a gradual decline in the male hormone, testosterone, a condition known as Andropause. The bodily changes associated with this decline occur very gradually in men and may be accompanied

Ladies, Guys Just Want to Look & Feel Good Too

by changes in attitudes and moods, an increase in fatigue, as well as a loss of energy, sex drive and physical agility. Andropause can actually put one at risk for other health problems like heart disease and osteoporosis. Proper testing, replacement of defi cient hormones and nutritional supplementation can help alleviate many of the symptoms associated with Andropause and give men the ability and the desire to enjoy what can be the best years of their lives.

So, ladies, this Father’s Day help your man invest in himself with services that help him look and feel his best and enhance the quality of life for both of you.

industry insights l By Brian Simmons

T he dimpled smiles of celebrities like Cheryl Cole, Mario Lopez and Jennifer Garner have always drawn fans. Recently, they’ve inspired those fans to get dimples of their own.

Dimple creation, also called dimpleplasty, is the newest trend in cosmetic surgery. Dr. Peter Chang of Timeless Plastic Surgery in Sugar Land, says he now performs four times as many dimpleplasty proce-dures as he did just a couple of years ago.

“Everyone in Hollywood has them, and everybody is wanting them,” Dr. Chang said of the dimple craze. Although women make up the majority of requests, the procedure is also popular among men, who want the “Mario Lopez” look.

Dimples have always been seen as cute, and they brighten a smile. Certain cultures even consider them good luck.

Natural dimples are muscle defects in the cheek where skin is stuck to underlying tissue. While some dimples stay through adulthood, many fade away as a child grows up and the defect disappears due to maturation of the cheek muscle.

It’s Allin the

SmileBefore After

Before After

Before After

Dimple creation consists of the doctor making a tiny incision inside a patient’s cheek. There are no cuts on the outside of the face. A small piece of cheek muscle is removed and the remaining muscle is attached to the underside of the skin with a dissolvable suture. The incision on the inside of the cheek leaves a permanent indentation in the skin, cre-ating the dimple.

The entire out-patient procedure requires only a local anesthetic and takes about 30 minutes. The patient can expect minimal temporary swelling, and the dimples will be deeper at first, Dr. Chang says, but look natural within a month. While the dimples may appear at all times initially, over time they are visible only when the patient smiles.

The “Timeless Dimple” offered only at Timeless Plastic Surgery is a updated modification of the original procedure made to be more pre-dictable, said Dr. Chang, one of the few area cosmetic surgeons who offers the service.

“Dimples can be more personalized,” Dr. Chang added. “Patients can choose designer dimples; they may want them long, short, deep, shallow, etc.” The patient also chooses exactly where they would like the dimples to be on their cheeks.

While one might pay $2,000 to $5,000 for dimpleplasty elsewhere, Timeless Plastic Surgery currently offers a special limited-time price. Call 281-242-TIME (8463) for details.

Dr. Chang has more than 15 years of training and experience in cos-metic surgery and has earned two Ivy League degrees and two doctorate degrees. He has garnered attention from being published in American and international medical journals, as well as Cosmopolitan magazine. Dr. Chang is trusted in the community for his personal (“Concierge”) and professional service.

Timeless Plastic Surgery is located next to St. Luke’s Sugar Land Hospital at 1327 Lake Pointe Parkway, Suite 300. Visit www.Time-lessPlasticSurgery.com for more information about Dr. Chang, dimple creation and photos of the patients on whom he has performed the procedure.

Is Your Homeand Your RoofHurricane Ready?

T he Weather Research Center re-cently issued a statement that struck fear in the hearts of many

Houstonians, saying: “The 2011 [Hurri-cane Season] Outlook indicates the Gulf of Mexico to be more active…The coast of Texas and the coast of Georgia to North Carolina have the second highest risk of a cyclone landfall with 70 percent.”

With the wrath of Ike still fresh on the minds of Houstonians, this prediction for a busy hurricane season leaves them worried. But rather than sit around and fret about the prediction, wise homeowners are beginning preparations in order to put their homes in an optimal position to weather a storm.

So how should you ready your home for the upcoming hurricane season? Certainly assemble an emergency supply of food and water as well as other essentials such as flash-lights and first aid supplies. Secure valuables in waterproof containers, draft an evacuation plan, and consider purchasing a generator.

You should also address the structural integrity of your home. Purchase plywood for the boarding of your windows. And turn your attention to that structure that takes such a lashing during a storm – your roof. The integrity of your roof is imperative in preventing devastating damage to your home, so consider calling a professional roof-er to determine if your roof needs additional reinforcement in order to survive a storm.

Before a storm rolls in, have a professional roofer inspect your roof for damage such as missing, rotted, and blistered shingles. They’ll spot damage that could result in leaks. And, it’s important to catch leaks early, since exposing your home’s frame to continual dampness will weaken its structural integrity.

Such a consultation won’t even cost you a dime. Ameristar Roofing provides free roof inspection and estimates. They’ll help you determine whether you need a roof restoration or a completely new roof. And they boast that “no job is too small,” as evidenced by their meticulous attention to detail even when roofing doghouses.

In addition, Ameristar will help you with your insurance claims. They’ve as-sisted thousands of people with insurance claims, so they’re able to help you decipher the confusing process.

And your roof may not cost as much as you expect, thanks to The Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthoriza-tion and Job Creation Act of 2010. This act provides tax credits of up to $500 for energy-efficient building materials, such as roofing.

With Ameristar Roofing, you’ll have confidence in your roofing investment be-cause they are fully insured and licensed. In addition, the company has attained the elite certification of CertainTeed Quality Master Installers. They offer CertainTeed shingles with SureStart™ protection. This plan covers 100% of the cost of both labor and materials during the first 3-10 years after your roof is installed. Homeowners may upgrade their wind warranty to cover damage from winds of up to 130 mph.

For more information on Ameristar Roofing or to request a complementary consultation, call 281-238-4230 or visit their website at www.ameristarroofing.com.

Approach the 2011 Hurricane Season with confidence, knowing that you’ve done all you can to enable your house to weather a storm.

The integrity of your roof is imperative in preventing

devastating damage to your home, so consider calling

W hen the school doors close for summer break, questions come from clients who ask:

“Is summer a good time to plant?” With temperatures rising over 90 degrees every day for months on end and the drought too, we completely understand concerns over plant life and health.

Thriving summer landscapes, even in droughts, depend on a few things…

Plant SelectionThis may sound like a repeat in our

articles, but plant selection is the number one mark of a successful, low-maintenance landscape, especially in the extreme heat. Here are just some of our favorites: salvias, black-eyed Susan, purple cone fl ower, lantana and daylilies.

Can I Plant in the Summer?

By Todd FarberPearls of Wisdom

Watering ScheduleWith the drought, you may want to

consider watering your landscape longer but less frequently. For example, instead of watering 3 days per week for 15 minutes, try watering 2 days per week for 30 minute sessions. The ground and the plants really need a good soaking and this method makes that happen. This is only a suggestion. Try this method, and see how your landscape responds. Remember, you should always follow the water restrictions for your area.

Fresh MulchMulch insulates and protects your

plants. A clean up of your landscape beds and fresh mulch will help keep the precious water in the soil longer.

Plant Today! Can you successfully plant in the

summer? Yes, you really can. Todd Farber, owner of Garden Guy, Inc, has been designing and installing amazing, drought-tolerant landscapes for 20 years. With a one year guarantee on everything he plants, summertime is a great time to get that yard you’ve been dreaming of. A Shining Star…at SixteenAn interview with

As a fi lm critic, I have the opportunity to visit with all sorts of celebrities both young

and old. Some may say that I have become a bit cranky in my old age, as I constantly complain about the youth of our country and how they have lost touch with reality. In my opinion, this is especially true in the entertainment industry. It would have been predictable for a successful 16 year-old actress to be full of narcissistic tendencies, yet she was not. There are exceptions to every rule, and Cierra Ramirez is defi nitely one of those exceptions. I had the opportunity to interview this bright Houstonian about her blossoming career and could not have had a more enjoyable conversation. It is easy to see why Cierra is so successful as she is bright, respectful and full of energy about the business she loves. She enjoys her Houston roots, is very close to her mom and is having a blast as a student at Westside High School.

FOW: What fi rst interested you in performing, and how did you get started?

Cierra Ramirez: I started out doing lots of local competitions. I had some success with those and saw a competition advertised out in Los Angeles. I asked my mom about it, and we decided we might as well try. The competition was for a number of different categories in the acting arenas, so my mom and I decided to go for it.

FOW: How do you prepare for a role?Ramirez: I try to immerse myself

in the role and understand as much as possible about the character. If I fi nd that I am having trouble with the part, I do go to a coach here in Houston. His name is John Lansch, and he helps me with a lot of my preparation.

44 focus on women l June / Ju ly 2011

Page 47: June-July-2011 - Focus on Women Magazine-Fort Bend County, Texas- Inspire, Educate, and Empower!

FOW: You have had a wide variety of guest appearances on television in some hit shows such as CSI Miami and Desperate Housewives. What were those experiences like?

Ramirez: I had a tremendous amount of fun and great experiences all around doing those shows. The cast and crew associated with all of the shows were great. I learned so much from everyone, and they were so supportive of me and what I was doing. CSI Miami was absolutely incredible!

FOW: You have done television and been in movies. What is different about making a movie rather than a television show?

Ramirez: The biggest difference is the amount of work and preparation that goes into a movie, as it is so much longer time wise than a television episode. Also, the movies that I have been in, I was a lead character, which added a great deal of weight to my shoulders. With the pressure of being a lead, I really doubted myself. Luckily for me, the director really liked to rehearse a lot and through that, I was able to find the character and developed a great deal of confidence in what I was doing. I really ended up having a great time and learned a lot in both the television and movie mediums.

FOW: Tell us about your experiences working for Disney playing Jasmine on the The Sweet Life of Zach and Cody?

Ramirez: What is amazing is that still, to this day, I have people who approach me and ask if I was on that show. That’s incredible that so long after the shows run, so many people remember it and or watch it in re-runs. Many of the people that do that surprise me as people that I would think wouldn’t have

watched that show, yet they did. Zach and Cody reached a wide audience evidently. It was a wonderful experience, and everyone was so nice. I am very proud to have been a part of that program.

FOW: You had the opportunity to do a pilot for Nickelodeon titled, Star and Stella Save the World. In that program, you played Stella. Talk about your experiences with that show.

Ramirez: It was a pilot, and we were really hoping that the show would get picked up. Nickelodeon was wonderful in many ways. I was excited as this was another opportunity for me to play a lead character. Disney and Nickelodeon were very similar and yet different in regards to the experiences. They were both great, though. Doing all of the guest star shots on shows were wonderful, but this was a lead role, and I really began to learn how to deal with the added pressure with this pilot. I had the most fun on set with this show and the other cast mates because they were all my age.

FOW: In your first role, you were in the film All In. That film starred Michael Madsen. What was it like working with someone so iconic?

Ramirez: Yes, this was the very first role I had ever done. Going into it, I was really scared. Luckily, I knew the actress who played my mom in the film, Patricia De Leon, and it was the first time I was around so many cameras and crew. Patricia was very helpful to me in learning how to work through everything. Michael Madsen is such a great actor, and he was a little bit intimidating. I started out shy, but I really got to know him well. He was so much fun and such a professional to work with.

FOW: Your most recent film, See If I Care, gives you the opportunity to work with Eva Mendes, Matthew Modine and Patricia Arquette. That must have been a tremendous experience for you to work with such seasoned performers.

Ramirez: They were all so wonderful. Initially, I think they sensed some of my apprehension and lack of confidence, but they were all very supportive and encouraging. They made me feel as though I was their equal. They gave me so much advice, which helped me with the role, then things just began to click. Everything about the job was a breeze because of the support and encouragement I received from everyone.

FOW: What are some of the things that might have surprised you about the entertainment industry that you wish you had known before you started?

Ramirez: Nothing really surprised me about the industry. You always hear rumors about this or about that. My advice is to stay away from that stuff. Never take anything personally. Constructive criticism is just that – it is meant to help you. I had heard scary things about the audition rooms and how they were just so awful. I found out they aren’t bad at all if you are prepared when you go to audition.

FOW: What future projects do you have lined up?

Ramirez: I don’t have anything lined up right now, as I am finishing up my school year. Once school is out, I am going out to Los Angeles to audition for whatever comes available, be it in television or in the movies.

well woman

A pproximately half of all men and one-third of all women in the United States will develop some

form of cancer during their lifetimes. “A diagnosis of cancer is sure to bring feelings of denial, anxiety and fear,” says Alexander Wong, M.D., board-certified hematolo-gist/oncologist on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “It also may become nec-essary to make important decisions about treatment options quickly. Here are a few suggestions to help you

through this difficult process:Ask detailed questions. Find out the

name of the cancer and its stage, size and location. Where did it start, and has it spread to other areas? “Some cancers are slow-growing, while others are more ag-gressive,” Dr. Wong says. “You may be facing different treatment options. Ask about the success rate of each option and possible side effects. Do not be misled by statistics, as each individual is unique and so is survival.”

Consult an oncologist. A cancer spe-cialist or oncologist has information about the latest treatment options and clinical trials that you may want to consider. Care provided by an oncologist in the local community can significantly reduce the hazard of traveling while going through treatments. Each treatment has its own set of side effects. Complementary therapies like acupuncture, acupressure and herbs are available to help improve side effects. Your oncologist can help you evaluate op-tions and explain realistic expectations.

Explore your options. The National Cancer Institute, www.cancer.gov, is a good starting point for learning about surgery options, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and integrative therapies. Your doctor can also supply you with patient education materials. If too much information overwhelms you, let your doctor know. He or she can recommend evidence-based treatment strategies appro-priate for your situation.

Enlist a support system. Bring some-one you trust with you when the diagnosis and treatment options are explained. At an emotional time when it may be hard to comprehend everything, it is valuable to have someone who can understand the information and ask more questions.

Maintain a positive attitude. Ask for help from your family, friends, spiritual ad-visors and health professionals. Dr. Wong says, “You have to forget about what is be-hind and focus on what is ahead.”

I love television, and I love movies, so it really doesn’t matter to me. More than anything, I just want a good part and will take what I can get.

FOW: Other than those we have already talked about, what other performing experience has been the most memorable for you?

Ramirez: I would have to say when I was ten years old and had the opportunity to sing at the Apollo. It was such a memorable experience to sing on the same stage that Michael Jackson had years before. Showtime at the Apollo is such a great program! What was interesting about this is that I sang at the Apollo during hurricane Ike. Luckily, we had purchased our airline tickets before the storm came, and the whole time I was away from home, I was worried about what we would fi nd when we came back. I was so worried. I actually lost my voice during our rehearsals. I was so scared and not sure I could do it. When I went on stage to perform, I just belted it out my rendition of I Am Changing by Jennifer Holliday. It was great! Still to this day I love watching myself in that performance.

FOW: If you had your choice, which actor or actress would you most like to work with and why?

Ramirez: I would say Rachel McAdams and Natalie Portman. I respect every-thing that Rachel and Natalie have done throughout their careers. Their performances are great, and they both stay out of the tab-

loids. I really respect them both for that. Everything they do, they take so seriously. It is easy to look up to and appreciate them.

FOW: What advice would you give to young people who might be interested in following in your footsteps?

Ramirez: I would tell them to work hard, live life to the fullest, learn as much as you can from everyone and have a blast! Part of what is so great about this job is the journey of experiences we have. Any role is so much fun and you should enjoy it as much as you can and always be proud of your work! The most important thing is to never, ever, give up on reaching your goals.

Style Tipsfor Your Man

Let’s face it ladies, when you agreed to better or worse, you did not envision a man who left his sense of style at the car lot when he bought the family’s fi rst mini van.

Here are a few quick tips to get your guy back on track.

Jacket: Calvin Klein available at SuitMart.

Shirt: H & MJeans: G By Guess

Invest in a nice pair of shades. Texas weather calls for a constant pair of super shades virtually year round so why not get a good, fl attering pair. But, make sure your guy only wears them at the appropriate time! Shades indoors – not as cool!

Oakleys are for baseball games.

A great grooming tip – make it messy! Men are always walking around with a circa 1989 super gelled helmet hair look. Take your guy to your salon – not his barber – at least once and have your stylist update his products and give him a quick lesson on how to use them. A great example of a product that does it all and is pliable is Sumo Tech from Bumble and bumble.

Mess is more.

tip:

tip:

There are jeans for cutting the grass and jeans to wear out on the town.Ladies, help us out here. Take your guy shopping and have him invest in a pair of jeans that are not “dad” jeans. And, the term invest does not mean you have to break the bank. Take him to the Gap or Buckle and buy one pair of jeans to wear when going out. And please, nothing bedazzled or with heavy stitching! Not cool!

tip:

Going casual is great; however, not tucking in a dress shirt really makes a guy look like they have missed the boat on style. Dress shirts are typically not as tailored, and they are for tucking in. If a shirt is not cut in a fi tted, fl attering style, it needs to be tucked.

Dress shirts are for tucking in.tip:

T hough often considered to be more common in men, heart disease is actually the leading killer and cause

of disability for women in the United States—and the majority of women who have a heart attack fail to make a full re-covery. Most potential heart problems can be easily identified during a regular check-up and review of your medical history with a family doctor. Women are often so busy caring for others that they do not take the appropriate preventative measures to un-derstand and maintain their own health.

Dr. Simbo Chiadika, a cardiologist with UT Physicians at Sienna Village, says that women should have comprehensive physical exams every 1-2 years to screen for health conditions such as heart di-sease. In addition, she encourages women to take control of their own health. This includes knowing your blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels as well as being screened for diabetes.

If an abnormality related to the heart is identified during a regular physical exam, your physician will refer you to a cardio-logist—a doctor who specializes in treat-ing the heart and vascular system. Other indicators that you may need to see a car-diologist include: a strong family history of heart disease, chest pain or discomfort known as angina, arrhythmia which can include irregular heartbeats, shortness of breath, and of course a cardiac event such as a heart attack. As you age, you have a greater risk of developing heart disease especially if you have a family history of heart disease at an early age.

Cardiologists work with patients to di-agnose and treat heart disease through a series of steps—usually beginning with a consultation to determine the symptoms a patient is experiencing, as well as what type of testing is necessary.

health & wellness

Following a consultation and possibly one or more of these tests, your cardiolo-gist will be able to provide a diagnosis and treatment plan for any cardiovascular problems that may exist. Depending on the level and progression of heart disease, recommended treatments might range from making dietary changes, to tak-ing prescription medications, to possibly undergoing a surgical procedure. Once a treatment regimen is started, follow-up visits should occur as recommended by the cardiologist to ensure that the treat-ment plan is effective.

Women work so hard to care for the needs of other, but it is also important to take care of ourselves. Along with main-taining a healthy diet, regular exercise and refraining from smoking, we should also take the time for regular visits to the phy-sician. And, we should especially note any possible signs or symptoms of heart disease.

Dr. Simbo Chiadika is a cardiologist with UT Physicians at Sienna Village and a faculty mem-ber with The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Chiadika, please call 713-486-1200 or visit www.UTPhysicians.com/SiennaVillage.

The Heart of the MatterUT Physicians’ Dr. Simbo Chiadika encourageswomen to care for their hearts

Some common non-invasive cardiology tests include:

• Exercise Stress Testing (or Treadmill Test) - measures how well the heart handles exercise.

• Electrocardiogram - monitors the heart’s electrical impulses to identify changes that may suggest insufficient delivery of oxygen to the heart (ischemia).

• Echocardiogram - uses ultrasound imaging to evaluate the heart’s structure and function.

• Nuclear Stress Testing - uses aninjected radioactive material to look at the blood flow in the heart during exercise conditions.

• Vascular Ultrasound - uses sounds waves to create detailed images of the vessels in the neck, abdomen, arms and legs in order to measure blood flow and detect blockages.

• Heart Rhythm Studies - utilizes Holter monitors and cardiac event recorders placed on the chest to record heart rhythms.

We celebrated our fi rst year anniversary on April 21st with Focus on Women Magazine - over 100 of our fabulous customers, a fl owing champagne fountain and dozens of cupcakes (red velvet, chocolate, banana...) courtesy of The Sweet Tooth Bakery located right here in the “Berg”! Beat the Summertime Heat with Refreshing Wines–with Refreshing Wines–

Cheers!

Here we go again fellow Texans! Welcome back heat and humidity along with the sound of children’s playful laughter in the pool and the scent of grilling smoke in

the air. It must be summertime in Texas! For generations, the Texas summer season brings back

memories of family vacations, outdoor holiday gatherings and cookouts that would impress the likes of those such as Anthony Bourdain. For me, summer brings a whole other craving to mind. Something light, something cold and something domestic. I’m not talking about a beverage recommended by the most interesting man in the world, or even a bottle of suds where when cold enough to consume, the label turns a shade of color. I’m talking about fermented grape juice that tastes good when it’s hot outside - my personal picks for summertime wines!

Light and crisp wines during the summer months have been a long tradition in my household, and you can practically pair a wine with any summertime occasion. Whether you like to soak in some sun while reading a book, grill out or just enjoy a nice summer evening out on the patio, please don’t do it alone! Here are some suggestions along with some food pairings to help you beat the summer heat.

Pinot Gris

For those who love Pinot Grigio, Pinot Gris is for you. In fact, Pinot Gris and Grigio are one in the same. I would bore you by going into the history on why Pinot Gris got lost in translation somewhere between Austria and Italy and popped out somewhere in Sicily somewhere as Grigio, but I won’t. Just know that if you love Pinot Grigio, you will adore Pinot Gris. Pinot Gris is grown all over the world and grows exceptionally well in certain parts of the Pacifi c Northwest. These wines are light, aromatic, fi nish clean and crisp and are loaded with aromas and fl avors of tree fruit such as apples and pears with hints of citrus. Pinot Gris pairs well with shellfi sh such as raw oysters, sautéed shrimp scampi or even some mussels in a garlic white wine sauce. Here are my Pinot Gris picks for the summer:

Willocrest Pinot GrisYakima Valley, WA ‘2010’ $11-$13

A-Z Pinot GrisOregon ‘2010’$13-$15

AlexanaWillamette Valley, OR ‘2009’$20-$25

I hope this brings some aid in shopping for some outstanding summertime wines. ¡Salud!

Dry Rosé

One of my favorite wines! Rosé practically performs well with any outdoor event due to its versatility. True rosé is made from red grapes, but it is not red – it is neither light or full-bodied, it looks sweet but fi nishes refreshingly crisp, and it pairs well with many different outdoor foods! Try your Rosé with smoked salmon, BBQ chicken, grilled fi sh or any fruit salad. Dry Rosé usually shows off a Pink, Salmon, or Garnet Blush color. You should receive aromas and fl avors of dried berry fruits such as cherry, cranberry, and strawberries, and the wine should fi nish clean and crisp. Here are my Rosé picks:

Sauvignon Blanc

My favorite white wine! Did you know that Sauvignon Blanc, “a white grape,” parented the most popular of all red wines? Cabernet Sauvignon is known to be a cross between the red varietal Cabernet Franc and the white varietal Sauvignon Blanc – Cabernet Sauvignon! Sauvignon Blanc is a grape that grows well in Napa Valley and throughout the North coast of California. Most Sauvignon Blanc from California exhibits citrus and grapefruit characteristics through nose and palate and fi nishes with a long, bright citrusy fi nish. Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with salads dressed with vinaigrette, grilled white meats and grilled fi sh. It also pairs well with sushi. Here are my Sauvignon Blanc suggestions:

Lost Summer RoseCA ‘2010’$10

Merryvale CabernetSauvignon RoséNapa Valley, CA ‘2010’ $15-$20

Robert Mondavi ReserveFume BlancSingle Vineyard “Tokolan” Napa Valley, CA ‘2006’$40-$45

Procrastinate Sauvignon BlancCA ‘2010’ $9-$10

Cade Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley, CA ‘2009’ $20-$25

between the lines

T he Home Fires Are Burning...My Feet! is a dry, funny book about surviving life with teenage sons, a mid-life job crisis, high school football, and turning 50.

More bourbon on the rocks than chicken soup for the soul, The Home Fires is a collection of stories about college admis-sions, car crashes, and middle-age sex—and why the game of Boff, Kill or Marry is an effective way to choose a presidential candidate.

Author Nora Barry writes like a 21st century Erma Bom-beck, from the front lines of suburbia, but with a global per-spective. Everything is interconnected in her stories, whether it’s Vladimir Putin and The Little Mermaid, Senators and Cialis or football and Amtrak - and why pink is actually a good color for living rooms if you have teenage boys in the house.

The Home Fires Are Burning...My Feet is available on both the Kindle and Nook platforms at amazon.com.

About Nora BarryNora Barry is a writer and

multimedia producer. She has contributed essays and chapters to several book collections, authored a number of journal articles on emerging forms of digital narrative and has written for the Wall Street Journal and the Philadelphia Inquirer. She also created and produced the fi rst Internet site for web cinema (The Bit Screen) and created and produced the fi rst online game-fi lm, an interactive gaming platform that generates short fi lms. Her website is www.druidmedia.com.

The Home Fires Are Burning… My Feet!

I used to think that a man in a coat and tie was a testament to the power of evolution.

This theory was on my mind recently because I have been treated to stories from the gym locker room. At the dinner table to be precise. I’m not sure this is the topic that child experts have in mind when they write that dining together as a family helps build strong bodies in twelve ways and keeps your kids off drugs. At any rate, football is an almost nightly topic at our dinner table and since I am outplayed three to one, I try to make the best of it. Sometimes I look at those perky female reporters on the sidelines and I think, hey I could make money not listening to men talk about football. I should get on that.

But I digress. I fell into tonight’s topic innocently enough. “How was

football practice this morning?,” I asked. Now you might think, as I used to, that football practice should not coincide with Major League Baseball in the spring, but you would be wrong. Spring is actually the season when football practice moves to the before school, 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. time slot. Wally and the Snapper launched into a full explanation while I chewed silently and silently let the words wash over me. I’m good at not really listening, as are most mothers. This is why we’re always surprised when the cops call to tell us what our kids have been up to. Anyway, as they talked, I ruminated to myself on what a lovely warm day it had been. The fi rst really hot day this spring. I hyperlinked from spring to warmth to teen age boys sweating it out on the football fi eld and mid-chew, I suddenly paused and asked, “Do you guys shower after practice? Before you go to class?” Dead silence. Even the dog looked away guiltily.

I looked from one son to the other. The Snapper recovered fi rst. “Yeah, we shower!” Wally disdainfully refused to answer, just rolled his eyes. But I’m an experienced investigative mother and pushed on. “Really? Do you take soap and towels in with you in the morning? Clean underwear?” Wally said, “Yeah mom, what do you think is in the bags we’re carrying?” He had me there. I’m never up when they leave at that hour.

64 focus on women l June / Ju ly 2011

I am motivated. I hope you’ll get moti-vated, too. You may ask, “Motivated to do what?” My answer is....to do that

thing, those things you have been meaning to accomplish, to resolve to do, to close out, just to get it done and feel happily “finished.”

Lately, I have been motivated to take care of some personal projects. I never got around to them because I kept telling myself that I really am too busy to accomplish these par-ticular goals – too busy with all the stuff that I am doing, good, productive, substantive tasks and fun activities that really and truly have to get done when you are raising young, rambunctious kids, a happy autistic teen, a busy spouse and running a household PLUS the job(s) and side projects. Something has to give, and I submit to you that whatever has to give is NOT your personal ambitions and endeavors. (A side note to this is that a pet peeve of mine is people lamenting they are too busy to call, write, or get together. Believe me, if you really want to call, write or get together, you will. Thus, I must quasi-irritate myself with my own pet peeve!)

However, as you strap on your seatbelt and race around this track called life, you do get preoccupied, stressed out (stress can be both good and bad – that’s another col-umn), distracted and dare I say it, comfort-able. Every once in a while, you’ll step out-side of yourself and think, “You know, life is pretty okay right now. It could be better, but I’m good. I’m taking care of business.” Then, that small, nagging voice (no, it will never go away) reminds you of all the per-sonal projects you had always planned on doing. That small, nagging voice nudges you to finally put YOU first and close out or reignite that friendship that has been somewhat stagnant, plant that herb garden, get that college degree, enroll in that Leisure Learning class, start your own small business or join a gym and actually go.

Please do it. Get it done. You may be comfortable, happy and blissfully content with your life or you may not. There is always something you wanted to do and in your mind, you just could not make it happen for any given reason. For an en-hanced you, make it happen. As much as you sacrifice for everyone else, you can

Get Up and Get to Gettin’!

the last word I By Tanya Sterling

make some sacrifices for you. There has been a spurt of local cam-

paigns and elections in my community, and these candidates have been working ex-traordinarily hard. This is one of the main reasons I have been motivated to get some projects done. I have had the opportunity to watch up-close as some of these candi-dates tirelessly campaign day in and day out for their desired elected office. I was even more impressed when I discovered that first, they have to figure out how they will finance their campaign and then raise the funds ac-cordingly; no one hands them money to run their campaign. Secondly, the elected office of their choice, if they win, does not pay a salary. Thus, I wonder, “Why in the world are these candidates working so hard to win this election? What is it that makes them pound the pavements knocking on your door and mine?” The answer is pretty simple: they want it. They want to win this election so bad that it consumes, and yes, motivates them. Now, there may be numer-ous reasons why a candidate wants to win a particular election, but the point is that they really want it.

Observing these hard-working candi-dates got me to thinking, “What is it that I want so badly?” I also pondered the curves and potholes I would have to overcome to motivate me to get up and get to gettin’ what I want. I hope you will do the same. Figure out what it is that you want to accomplish or close out, and just face it head on. Trust me, it won’t be hard to figure it out as it’s always on the forefront of your mind. After you have taken the time to determine your burning desire or a task that you simply must do, logically map out how it will get done. It may take some lifestyle modifica-tions, early mornings, late nights and sacri-ficing some household funds, but it can be done, and you should get it done. Once you have amazingly accomplished your goal or task, simple or complex, you will feel ridicu-lously accomplished and complete. And yes, you will then be ready and ultra confident to move on to the next goal or task that further enables you to be the confident woman that you are, or better yet, have become. Let’s get up and get to gettin’ together!

There is alwayssomething you wantedto do and in your mind,

you just could notmake it happen forany given reason.

For an enhanced you, make it happen.
