Beware of Prize Scams

Canadians are solicited over the phone, email or social media and advised that they are the winner of a large

lottery or sweepstake. Prior to receiving any winnings, they must first pay an upfront fee. No winnings are

ever received.

The scammers constantly re-invent the wheel and come up with new twists to prey on potential victims. Over

the past 6 months there have been several complaints of people receiving calls from representative of the

STARS lottery advising them that they have won a big prize. Scammers advise that in order to receive the

prize the winter is required to pay a small advance fee to cover taxes or legal fees associated to the win.

Scammers ask that the money be mailed to a foreign country or to wire the money through Wester Union.

Warning signs—How to protect yourself

You will never be asked to send money to claim a STARS Lottery prize. Period. If you are being asked

to send a cheque, money order, or payment of any kind to claim your lotter prize, it is a scam. Hang up

the phone or delete the email.

Check with STARS directly to verify if you are a winner. You are always welcome to check the official

lottery numbers and websites, and not the ones a scammer may provide. STARS phone number

1-888-880-0992, email address [email protected] and on website http://starslotteryalberta.ca/.

Any fees associated to winnings will never be paid through a money service business such as Western

Union, MoneyGram or by loading funds to prepaid credit cards such as Green Dot.

Any unsolicited phone call advising that you have won a lottery is fake. The only way to participate in

any foreign lottery is to go to the country of origin and purchase a ticket in person. A ticket cannot be

purchased on your behalf.

Never give out personal information over the phone, no matter who the caller claims to represent.

HONOR FATHER June is the month we remember and honor Father. Truly a Father has a huge responsibility in the role modelling the Man image. They are teacher, provider, fixer and need to be, both strong and yet kind and compassionate. To be a balance of strong/gentle, teacher/learner, fixer /yet know their own limits and be a safe place and open to gentleness. Often the world is turned upside down and inside out and the strongest man is shaken by death of a parent, child, spouse, family member, friend or a relationship ceases and is broken. A dream dies for the future, or what could have been. If their father had been a more positive role model, if there hadn’t been abuse, if their family was still whole and not fragmented. If life could have been handled in a more positive way. When these losses are experienced one is left vulnerable, shaken and ‘naked’ so to speak. How can one model strength in the midst of such loss and pain? The myth of Society is that “big boys don’t cry” and “tough it out”. That is impossible to do with a broken heart. It is known there are different grieving patterns and many factors that affect how one grieves, but take heart there is no one way to grieve nor is there a right or wrong way or a specific time to be “over grieving”. One thing to note that one never need to stay stuck in grief, there are always supports and counsellors to assist in finding good coping skills through the grief journey to a “new normal” state of life. Never be afraid to reach out and learn some coping skills to heal and to be healthy and whole. Don’t stuff your emotions but find a healthy way to work through your grief. (There is strength in weakness). Find supportive friends, who are understanding, read information on the grief process, listen and seek out counsellors or a good support group. Self medicating with substances is not a healthy way to process grief, it only numbs grief and one still has to face the impact of grief, sometimes years later. Find routine in your out of control world that helps normalize your life Your loss is unique and cannot be compared to anyone else’s.

(Your personality, other losses, coping mechanisms, age, attitudes to death loss and grief, social supports and acceptance of myth of expectations that Man is strong and does not feel deep emotions.)

Commit to doing the hard work of grieving and, in doing so the role model of Man and Father will be there for others to learn from. "We are not alone," is the first line of A New Creed, one of the four faith statements of The United Church of Canada. The United Church has a long history of welcoming people of all backgrounds and orientations – wherever you are in your faith journey. Please feel welcome to join us for worship on Sundays at 9:30am, with coffee and fellowship following the service. The first Sunday of every month is Muffin Morning at 8:30am, an opportunity to visit with Rev. Taylor as he leaves for the service in Marwayne every week following worship in Kitscoty. Other events in the church throughout the week: Choir practice – Thursdays 4:00-5:00pm Bible Study – Thursdays 7:00-8:00pm Midwest Family Connections: Play & Learn – Mondays 10:30-11:30am

It has been a whirlwind start for me here in Kitscoty and Marwayne with the busyness of Lent and Easter. I just wanted to let you know that now that things are beginning to settle into a routine, my current priority for our church is rebuilding our children and youth programming. We at Kitscoty United Church know that many in the community would like to see a return of the Sunday School and youth activities. It may take us until September until these things are fully running, but if this has been a barrier for you joining us, please know that it my hope that we are able to meet your expectations in the near future.
