As Sam Cooper, president of our board, said at Beth Adam’s Annual Meeting “It has been quite a year.” This year the congregation’s impact and reach have been greater than at any other time in our history. We can all take pride in knowing that our community is having an impact in Cincinnati and beyond.

Serviceswith science -- unites all of humanity and provides the wisdom and larger sense of meaning that we need to face our future, as well as the future of our damaged planet, together. Nancy will be joined by her husband, Joel Primack. He is a distinguished professor of physics at UCSC who works on cosmology, especially dark matter and galaxy formation. Abrams and Primack have co-authored two books, The View from the Center of the Universe: Discovering Our Extraordinary Place in the Cosmos, and The New Universe and the Human Future: How a Shared Cosmology Could Transform the World.

These speakers are sure to give presentations that educate, excite, and challenge.

This is but a glimpse into what is coming next year. A year that I might add has deep significance for the congregation. Next year marks the 36 year anniversary of Congregation Beth Adam. Thirty-six being double “chai.” Chai being the number 18 in Hebrew and meaning “life” in English.

Thirty-six years is a tribute to the dedication, commitment, and support of our members. Because of you, Beth Adam has grown from a handful of individuals into a Cincinnati institution. We give voice to a BOLD Judaism that has spread beyond the walls of our sanctuary and is now being heard throughout Cincinnati and beyond. We can be proud of the impact we are having on the future of Judaism.

Social Action

As you travel out of the city and stay in hotels this summer, please consider bringing back the complimentary toiletries to donate to those in need. The size of the complimentary toiletries is perfect because people in need often cannot store or carry large containers due to the fact that they are so transient. You may drop off your collection in the basket outside the office. Donations will be distributed to The Mary Magdalen House, which provides a safe and pleasant place for persons who need to shower, shave, brush their teeth, etc., and to Church of Our Saviour.Thank you to those who have recently contributed.

Live Streaming Guests

Remember Shabbat Services are only a "click" away. Join Rabbi Barr and others from around the world for streaming Shabbat services at www.OurJewishCommunity.org. The services stream live at 6:00 PM EST on Friday and are archived for viewing at your convenience. If you participate live, you can "chat" with others who are also attending services. If you view the services in the archives, earlier comments are available to be read and more comments can be added.

Rabbi Barr is excited to have other rabbis, clergy, and educators participating in services with him. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn and celebrate Shabbat even as you travel this summer.

Community Connection

Rabbi Barr is excited about leading the Beth Adam Interfaith Trip to Israel with Rev. Sharon Dittmar. This is a community wide trip with over 500 people from Cincinnati participating.

Rabbi Barr attended a meeting at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion for supervisors working with HUC-JIR rabbinic students. This year we were very fortunate to have both Iah Pillsbury, fourth year student, and Zachary Goodman, second year student, working at Beth Adam. We are very pleased to announce that Iah will continue working at Beth Adam through May 2017.

Beth Adam was a feature story on WCPO.com Insider edition. The article provided a good overview of the history and philosophy of Beth Adam. Emphasis was on what distinguishes us from other congregations, such as "... you won’t hear people asking God for healing, or wisdom, or anything else..." and on our online presence which reaches thousands around the world via OurJewishCommunity.org.

Rabbi Barr participated in the community wide Yom HaAtzmaut celebration, Israel Independence Day.

Rabbi Barr will be among other Cincinnati rabbis on a panel discussion on the modern-day meaning of Zionism and the relationship between American Jews and Israel.

Membership Matters

We’re looking forward to celebrating our significant anniversary throughout the upcoming congregational year. If you would like to help in any way, please call the office at 513-985-0400.

36 Year Anniversary

One way of commemorating Beth Adam's 36 year anniversary will be to make a significant addition to the tile wall in the education wing. The wall represents the importance of education, the individuality, and open-mindedness of Beth Adam's core religious values.

If you wish to create a tile, you may go to one of two local places where you can paint a tile and have it fired: The Pottery Place in Kenwood Towne Centre or Mad Potter on Camargo Rd. Tile Guidelines: Tiles are to be 4 x 4 inches. The theme is What Beth Adam Means to Me. Tiles can be decorated with words, illustrations, and/or symbols.

by Iah Pillsbury

Thank you SO MUCH to all our amazing parents, students, and religious school teachers, Mike Pittinger, Lisa Forschner, Nancy Shayeson, Leigh Klyop, Debbie Snyder, Sheryl Cohen, Zachary Goodman, for leading us in song, and Emily Snyder, teacher’s assistant for Pre-K, who made this year a success. You were all busy with a wide array of commitments. Yet, you still woke up on Sunday mornings, and came ready to learn, teach, and make the world a more awesome place. A special shout out to Kaila Sizemore who made sure that we had coffee and bagels, and the supplies we needed.

We completed the Religious School year with a fabulous day of tile painting with Yvonne Cooper, fun games, and yummy food. Yvonne has fired the tiles in her home studio. By Yom Kippur the tiles will be installed in the Religious School hallway. We are excited to announce that Yvonne will be our Artist-in-Residence during the fall semester. This means she will come once a month to lead students and parents in creating their very own ceramic Judaica (Jewish ritual objects like candlesticks, mezuzahs, Kiddush cups, etc). Stay tuned for more information and dates.

Are you a committed Beth Adam teen looking for an interesting and exciting way to give back to your community while you learn new skills? Become a Teacher's Assistant in our Religious

This program will be tailored to your specific needs, strengths, and skills that you would like to acquire. And we give community service hours! Please contact Iah Pillsbury, [email protected] if you are interested or need more information.

We can’t wait to see you next year! The first day of Religious School is Sunday, September 11, and we will have a bouncy castle to enjoy; so get excited!
