Crime on Campus

UCLA murder-suicide:

Slain wife found because of

note about gunman's cat

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The path to the campus shooting death of a UCLA professor began nearly 2,000 miles away in Minnesota.

There, a former student with a grudge,

Mainak Sarkar, killed his estranged wife.

Sarkar then made the long drive to Los

Angeles where he found his former mentor,

engineering professor William Klug, and

shot him before turning the gun on himself,

authorities said Thursday.

Both victims were on a "kill list" police

found at Sarkar's Minnesota apartment. A

third person on the list, another UCLA

professor, was spared because he was not on

campus Wednesday when Sarkar arrived

with two semi-automatic pistols, police said.

(Facebook via AP)

Authorities did not publicly identify the

unharmed professor or the woman. A law

enforcement official with knowledge of the

investigation told The Associated Press the

woman on the list was Ashley Hasti, who

documents show married the gunman in

2011.

The investigation unfolded rapidly based on

a note Sarkar left in the office where he

killed Klug. It asked anyone who read it to

check on Sarkar's cat in St. Paul, Minnesota.

At Sarkar's apartment, authorities found his

list of three planned targets. They checked

the home of the woman in the nearby town

of Brooklyn Park and found her body.

The law enforcement official said Hasti was

the name of the woman on Sarkar's list.

Beck said the woman named on the list was

the victim; and a neighbor told AP that Hasti

lived in the home with her father.

The official who said Hasti's name was on the list was not authorized to publicly discuss the case and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Gordy Aune Jr., who lives three doors away and is the neighborhood watch commander, said Hasti and her father kept to themselves.

Records in Hennepin County, Minnesota, show Hasti married Sarkar in 2011, though more recently they had different residences.

Hasti's grandmother, Jean Johnson, said the two remained together for only about a year, but didn't get a divorce because Hasti couldn't afford one.

"They just didn't get along," Johnson told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "The only enemy she had was him, I guess. I never thought he would do something like that."

Hasti hadn't mentioned any recent animosity with Sarkar, she said.

Sarkar had disparaged Klug online and the professor knew of his contempt, but police have not uncovered any death threats, Beck said. The writings contained "some harsh language, but certainly nothing that would be considered homicidal," he said.

A blog post written in March by someone identifying himself as Sarkar asserted that Klug "cleverly stole all my code and gave it (to) another student" and "made me really sick."

Beck said the investigation showed Sarkar's claims of stolen code are "a making of his own imagination."

Sarkar, 38, and Klug, 39, once were close. In his 2013 dissertation about using engineering to understand the human heart, the student thanked the professor "for all his help and support. Thank you for being my mentor."

Sarkar grew up in Durgapur, India, an industrial town where his father worked as a clerk in a cement manufacturing company. Residents there remembered Sarkar as a diligent student.

A former classmate at Durgapur's Bidhan Institute -- where Sarkar studied for two years after high school before attending the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur -- said he was "totally stupefied" by the news of the shooting.

"Mainak was a very good student. In school, he looked so innocent and was well-behaved," said Mridul, who like many people in India uses only one name. But Mridul said Friday he was not

in touch with Sarkar after he left for a life in the United States.

Sarkar's LinkedIn page shows he obtained a master's degree at Stanford University after graduating in 2000 from the Indian Institute of Technology with a degree in aerospace engineering.

He most recently was listed as an engineering analyst at a Findlay, Ohio, company called Endurica. Company president Will Mars said Sarkar left in August 2014.

It's unclear what he had been doing since.

Colleagues, family and friends described Klug as a kind, devoted father and teacher. He is survived by his wife and two children, a 9-year-old boy and 7-year-old girl.

On campus Thursday night, hundreds of students, staff and faculty gathered for a vigil for Klug, holding up their cellphones like candles to light up the night sky.

"Bill was so much more than my soul mate," his wife, Mary Elise Klug, said in a statement. "I will miss him every day for the rest of my life."

Show Time for Ralph

Lauren a comeback

2016

Mr. Larsson, 41, is expected to introduce a

new corporate strategy on Tuesday at a

meeting for analysts. Its settlement, the

company has too many brands and retail

outlets. It depends on the department stores,

where customers are connected to the

discounts. Its costs are bloated and inefficient

inventory system.

In an interview, he said the company will

focus on its main Ralph Lauren, and Lauren

Polo labels. Fifty shops, roughly 10% of the

retail footprint companies, especially high-end

stores will be closed. And shipments to stores

will be reduced in the hope that the shortage is

projected to increase sales of full-price.

Larsson wants to slash six months of

production time and eliminate three layers of

management.

movements, he said, will result in

disqualification 1,000 jobs, about 8% of full

time.

“Our performance has been disappointing over

the past three years, and it does not match the

strength of the brand,” said Mr. Larsson from

his office paneled in mahogany New York headquarters.

Such turmoil is painful for a company that was

once considered the bluest of blue-chip

fashion houses. Ralph Lauren faces a litany of

woes whole field, including the strong dollar,

which has scared off foreign buyers. Some of his problems are of his own creation.

slow to react Industry executives say the company was slow

to respond to changes reshaping the business.

These include the rise of fast fashion retailers

like H & M, whose short production cycles

and low prices are under pressure, traditional

clothing company, and a shift toward

sportswear in everyday life.

“Athleisure and fast fashion created the dual

headwinds for traditional polo shirt,”

said John Kernan, retail analyst with

investment firm Cowen & Co. “There was not

much novelty in this brand. “

Pan. Lauren, who declined to be interviewed

for this article, said in a written statement: “I

am very pleased with Stefan vision and action

to be taken to ensure that we continue to develop and prosper.”

Mr. Lauren remains chairman of the

company’s chief creative officer and largest

shareholder. He and entities controlled by his

family have voting power of more than 82%

of the ordinary shares. He is one of the few

designers of his generation, to continue to play

an active role in his company. And his

company is one of the few design houses that

were gobbled conglomerate.

chief operating officer, sometimes acted as a

control business focused on Mr. Lauren loftier

ambitions, according to several former managers.

A spokesman said Mr. Lauren ambitions were

not limited. He noticed Mr. Lauren was not

only the company’s creative leader, but her

business head.

Mr. Farah withdrew from daily operations to

become deputy chairman in 2013. He left the

company a year later, and now is co-CEO of Tory Burch LLC.

The company created a chairman, consisting

of Mr. Lauren and three other workers. Mr.

Lauren began inserting himself into more of a business decision by the previous leadership.

In China, the company is trying to revamp its

image after buying back its license in 2010

from a partner, former executives said. Mr.

Lauren wanted to pull the lower-end brand

Polo from China, and just selling luxury goods

from Purple Label Company, which suits cost more than $ 5,000, they said.

Ralph Lauren closed two-thirds of its Chinese

retail distribution and opened a high-end

stores that sell $ 85 polo customers come to

associate with the brand. Then corruption

crackdown the government reduced the

demand for luxury goods in China’s

burgeoning middle class has become the driving force of the economy.

Sales at Ralph Lauren with separate flagship

stores on New York’s Madison Avenue fell

after Mr. Lauren mandated in 2014 that lower-

end polo shirts, sweaters and sportswear to be

moved up to make space for $ 4,100 watch

and $ 2500 handbag, named for his wife, Ricky, the former executives said.

company spokesman said Ralph Lauren retail

stores closed in China because many were in

subpar places, and scale back Polo, because

the brand has been tarnished by counterfeiting.

Regarding the decline in sales at the flagship

stores of Madison Avenue, the spokesman

quoted throughout the industry decline in foot

traffic.

Earnings fell to $ 396 million in the fiscal year

ended April 2 from $ 702 million in the

previous year. Revenue fell to $ 7.41 billion

from $ 7.62 billion. The shares, which closed

at $ 96.33 on Monday fell nearly 30% more

than last year.

In an interview in September, Mr. Lauren said

he was looking for several years for a manager

who could help expand their business.

Although Mr. Lauren 44-year-old son, David,

is executive vice president and sits on the

board of the company was not in operation,

said one of the former managers.

The company hired a search firm Spencer

Stuart, who introduced Mr. Lauren Mr

Larsson, who revived Old Navy by shortening delivery times and storage trendier fashions.

Mr. Larsson, who grew up in a small town in

Sweden, joined H & M in 1998, when the

brand was not as hip as it is today. “The most

amazing of my friends, they called me and

said:” After work, Stefan, do not bring about

H & M bag, because you have the whole thing down, “he said.

Mr. Larsson is not foreign to navigate family-

dominated companies. the Gap, founding

Fisher family holds a large share and H & M, grandson of the founder’s CEO.

After he was Ralph Lauren hired Mr. Lauren

has made it clear he does not intend to resign.

“as for me, I strengthen, not out, “he said in September.

Mr. Lauren, born Ralph Lifshitz, rose from

humble beginnings in the Bronx to become the

arbiter of style. Starting in 1967 with a series

of ties, built company, which now includes

clothing, home furnishings, fragrances,

accessories and restaurants. Its products are

sold under a dozen labels on nearly 500

company-owned retail stores and thousands of stores worldwide.

People who have worked with Mr. Lauren

says that he considers himself more like a

movie director than a designer treated his old

world, a privileged lifestyle. Although the

highbrow image produces a halo for the brand,

the company makes most of its money selling

mesh polo shirts and moderately priced

sportswear in factory outlets and department stores, the former executives said.

The company does not break out sales label,

but wholesale, mostly sales to department

stores, accounted for 45% of sales last year,

and nearly two-thirds of operating profit. On

the retail side of the company’s 272 stores are 493 Factory Stores.

Mr. Lauren pioneered tiered strategy that

competitors to copy. Even so, the luxury business remains the focus.

Since 2013, the company increased the

number of high-end stores from Ralph Lauren

29. That drove costs without producing a

sufficient amount of sales or profits,

said Laurent Vasilescu analyst with the

research arm of Macquarie Group.

Expense problem Total costs were 45.8% of sales in the recently

completed year, compared with 42.2% two

years ago. U PVHCorp. PVH -0.06 % , which

owns Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, costs

decrease and amounted to 41.3% of sales in its

last year.

“The cost structure hasn ‘t been competitive,”

acknowledged Larsson. He said that shops

were opened in suboptimal locations were too

big and too expensive to build due to sales and profits are generated.

Another culprit was the bloated management

structure, he said, which is one of the reasons

for reducing the number of layers between

entry-level employees and himself six out of

nine. Reducing the executive ranks will return to roughly 2012 levels.

The office of President was disbanded

concentrate decision-making into the hands of

masters. Larsson and Lauren. One of the top

executive gave up his duties in November and

the other left in May. The third

memberValérie Hermann, , who oversees the

company the luxury company now has more

oversight of collections and accessories for

women.

Mr. Larsson tapped former H & M executives

to run global sourcing and business

development. The new head of online business

came from eBay Inc. EBAY 0.04 %

could take 15 months for a product to go from

design to disposal, the window in which Mr

Larsson hopes to narrow to nine months by

design, merchandising, sourcing and

marketing teams they work together. It plans

to test small batches of products that can be

produced in eight weeks, and then quickly

change the order-best selling strategy used at Old Navy.

Rather than scattering resources across brands,

will focus on high-end line of Ralph Lauren

and lower-end Polo and Lauren brands that are

the foundation of a home business. Smaller

brands such as RRL, named for the Colorado

ranch that Mr. Lauren own with his wife, who

sells edge denim, vintage clothing and other

equipment will have to prove that they are viable.

wants goods companies focus on pieces such

as navy jackets, military jackets and polo

shirts, which sees it as timeless, but updated

for today’s styles. For example, Ralph Lauren

double-breasted women’s jacket was modified

to make it more fitted silhouette and make it

narrower shoulders and arms. After the

changes, it has become one of the best selling jackets companies.

He also sees an opportunity to sell more

handbags and accessories, which carry higher

margins. This is an area where the company

has struggled, and that sets it apart from

European luxury homes, which make up most

of their money on bags and shoes. At Ralph

Lauren, handbags and small leather goods

account for about 8% of its revenues,

according to Mr. Vasilescu. That compared

with 57% in Kering SA KER 2.23 % ‘s Gucci

brand.

New CEO is even considering testing some

ideas pioneered online startups, such as

creating a subscription service for shirts and

ties and allows shoppers to rent high-end tuxedos.

Staying Young and

the invisible fountain

of youth

About Anti-Aging: The pressure to

embody youthfulness — particularly

when it comes to our appearances

— is an increasingly prominent part

of our everyday lives. Whether it’s

your mother coloring her grays

away or a reality star getting Botox,

everyone seems to be trying harder

and harder to turn back the clock.

So how far are we willing to

go? Allure took a good, hard look at

Americans’ attitudes

towards aging in a new study,

published in the April 2013 issue in

partnership with Penn Schoen

Page 10: June 2016 Connections Magazine Summer Issue

Berland. The magazine’s first-ever

anti-aging surveycollected

information from 2,000 men and

women, asking questions about

beauty, sex appeal and celebrities.

Some of the findings come as no

shock, such as: Both men and

women agree there’s more

pressure on women to look young

than on men. But there are some

responses that did suprise us:

63 percent of men color their hair to look

younger, versus 36 percent of women.

1 percent of men and women have

actually gotten cosmetic surgery,

injections and/or laser treatments... but 30

percent who haven’t yet say they’d

consider doing so in the future.

42 percent of women would consider anti-

aging injections or surgery, versus only 18

percent of men.

So women are the ones

contemplating Botox, facelifts and

the like... but men are the ones

grabbing the hair dye and banishing

those grays.

Even more intriguing than that is

how we judge each other for the

anti-aging actions we take. Allure

found that respondents ages 18-29

had a much more negative

opinion of celebs or politicians

who’ve had work done than older

respondents. These younger

respondents also felt more strongly

that those celebs and politicians

should reveal what they’ve had

done (like this gal).

While Millennials might protest

being painted as harsh and critical,

the contrast makes sense. It’s easy

for a taut 25-year-old to forswear

Botox or judge someone else’s

tummy tuck. But a 50-year-old

woman who is actually experiencing

aging firsthand may be less quick to

judge — in fact, she might

empathize with her older peers for

making the decisions they have.

As 28-year-old Mila Kunis once put

it, “I will not put a needle in my body

unless I have a medical reason...

but ask me in 10 years. Right now,

I’m like, ‘I’m going to embrace it,’

but... I’m probably going to want to

have something done. I have no

doubt.”

and women.

Myth vs. Reality on Anti-Aging Vitamins

Paying extra for exotic vitamins in skin creams

that promise to erase fine lines and

prevent wrinkles will get you little more than an

empty wallet, according to dermatologists.

Although many face creams

containvitamins known as antioxidants, very few

are actually effective in preventing or reversing

skin damage.

"Despite advertising claims, almost all available

topical formulations contain very low

concentrations of antioxidants that are not well

absorbed by the skin," said Karen E. Burke, MD,

in a presentation to the American Academy of

Dermatology's annual meeting this week in New

Orleans. "There are three antioxidants that have

been proven to decrease the effect of the sun on

the skin and actually prevent further

damage:selenium, vitamin E, and vitamin C."

Antioxidants are known to prevent agents called

free radicals from damaging cells in the body

and the skin. Free radicals are a result of normal

body processes, but they can also be created by

exposure to various environmental factors such

as smoking or ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the

sun and can speed up the aging process.

Burke says the problem with applying

antioxidants to the skin to fight aging is that they

aren't very well absorbed or only have short-

term effects. But new research presented at the

dermatology conference suggests more effective

formulations to deliver two of these antioxidants

directly to the skin that needs it may soon be

available.

Selenium The mineral selenium helps protect the body

from cancers, including skin cancer caused by

sun exposure. It also preserves tissue elasticity

and slows down the aging and hardening of

tissues associated with oxidation. Dietary

sources of the mineral include whole grain

cereals, seafood, garlic, and eggs.

Recent animal studies have found that when

selenium is taken orally or through the skin in

the form of L-selenomethionine, it provided

protection against both everyday and excessive

UV damage. A study also showed selenium also

delayed the development of skin cancer in the

animals.

Burke says those results are promising, but

studies are still needed in humans.

Vitamin E

Experts consider vitamin E to be the most

important antioxidant because it protects cell

membranes and prevents damages to enzymes

associated with them. Natural sources of vitamin

E include vegetable oils such as sunflower oil,

grains, oats, nuts, and dairy products.

New laboratory studies suggest vitamin E helps

inactivate free radicals, making them less likely

to cause damage. Several other studies have

Page 12: June 2016 Connections Magazine Summer Issue

CONNECTIONS JUNE 2016

MY CONNECTIONS MAGAZINE

11

shown applying vitamin E to the skin can reduce

damage caused by sun exposure and limit the

production of cancer-causing cells.

"For additional sun protection, individuals may

consider taking vitamin E supplements," said

Burke, in a release. "Supplementation with

vitamin E in 400 milligrams a day has been

noted to reduce photodamage,wrinkles and

improve skin texture."

Vitamin C Vitamin C is the most common antioxidant found

in the skin. It's also found in vegetables and

citrus fruits. Like vitamin E, vitamin C is

considered important in repairing free radicals

and preventing them from becoming cancerous

or accelerating the aging process.

Since vitamin C is most prevalent in the skin, the

skin is the organ that suffers most from

environmental stressors. Smoking, sun

exposure, and pollution rob the nutrient from our

bodies, says Burke.

"Even minimal UV exposure can decrease the

vitamin C levels in the skin by 30 percent, while

exposure from the ozone of city pollution can

decrease the level by 55 percent," said Burke in

a release.Creating a skin cream that carries a

useful dose of vitamin C is difficult because it

reacts immediately when exposed to oxygen.

Several clinical trials examining more stable,

effective formulations are currently under way.

The 15-Minute Anti-

Aging Workout

In just a few minutes a week, these six research-backed exercises will tighten and tone your trouble spots: Grab a set of dumbbells (beginners can use three- to five-pound ones) and complete six to 15 repetitions of each exercise unless the instructions indicate otherwise. Do two or three sets of each move, but if you’re really pressed for time, one set is OK. Follow the entire routine two or three times a week on nonconsecutive dayHave your upper arms, stomach and butt all started drifting south? Chalk up that droopiness to the loss of muscle mass that can begin in sedentary women as young as 25. “The muscle you lose is replaced with fat,” says Caroline Apovian, MD, associate professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and director of

Page 13: June 2016 Connections Magazine Summer Issue

the Nutrition and Weight Management Center at Boston Medical Center. And because fat is not supported by muscle, it hangs off your body. Another sag promoter is the declining elasticity of your skin. Sounds hopeless—but there’s an easy way to turn back the clock: strength-training exercises. By building up your muscles, you can regain your youthful tone, says Brad Schoenfeld, lecturer in exercise science at Lehman College in the Bronx, New York, and author of Women’s Home Workout Bible. Which exercises do the job most quickly? Click next for our picks—six that have been found effective by the nonprofit American Council on Exercise and several universities. The result: an efficient routine that in less than 15 minutes targets the most important muscles.

How to do it: Stand with left leg forward, knee bent, right leg back a foot or two. Place left hand on left thigh for support. Grasp dumbbell in right hand with palm facing body; let arm hang by side. Keeping elbow close to body, pull dumbbell upward and back until it touches your hip. Return to start and repeat; switch sides. Best move: Kickback How to do it: Stand with left leg forward, slightly bent, right foot back a foot or two. Place left hand on left thigh and lean forward, transferring most of upper-body weight to left side. Holddumbbell in right hand. Position right upper arm close to torso. Bend elbow 90 degrees. Keeping upper arm still, straighten elbow until arm is fully extended. Release to start position and repeat; switch sides. Front plank How to do it: Get on floor on elbows and knees, elbows directly under shoulders. Contracting your core, lift knees so body forms one long line from head to toe. (If this is too difficult, stay on knees.) Keep neck in line with spine and hold 10 seconds. Release and repeat five times.

Saggy Breasts Target muscles: Chest

Best move: Dumbbell chest press How to do it: Lie face up on floor, knees bent, feet flat on floor. Holddumbbell in each hand, and with palms facing away from face, bend elbows to 90-degree angles and place them even with shoulders. Press both weights directly over chest, moving them toward each other so sides of weights gently touch. Release to start and repeat. Droopy Butt Target muscles: Glutes, the big muscles in the derriere Best move: Stiff-legged dead lift

How to do it: Stand with feet shoulder width apart. Holding weights, let arms hang in front of body, palms facing body. Keeping knees straight and back neutral, slowly bend forward at hips and lower dumbbells until you feel a hamstring stretch. As you lower, push butt back; keep gaze on wall in front of you. Release to start, contracting glute muscles, and repeat. Floppy Thighs Target muscles: Quadriceps Best move: Goblet squat How to do it: Stand with feet shoulder width apart, toes turned out. Using both hands, hold dumbbellvertically in front of you at chest level, close to body. Keeping knees aligned over ankles, lower body toward floor until thighs are parallel to floor. Then rise back up to the start position.

Med Plus: about the confusion with Mediterranean Diet, Mediterranean Food, and just Middle

Eastern Food: WHAT IS

THE

MEDITERRAN

EAN DIET?

The Mediterranean Diet is a way of

eating based on the traditional foods

(and drinks) of the countries surrounding

the Mediterranean Sea. The

Mediterranean Diet is not a diet, as in

“go on a diet,” even though it is a great

way to lose weight or improve your

health. Rather, it is a lifestyle – including

foods, activities, meals with friends and

family, and wine in moderation with

meals. It has been studied and noted by

scores of leading scientists as one of

the healthiest in the world. Just as

important, the Mediterranean Diet is full

of wonderfully delicious, flavor-filled

dishes and meals. It’s easy to

understand what it is by thinking

about Mediterranean dishes or “plates.”

For instance, think about these simple,

yet healthy and delicious dishes:

L to R: Whole Grain Pasta with

Vegetables, Fragrant Couscous, Greek

Salad, Creamy Hummus with Warm

Pita, Sautéed Spinach with Lemon.

What Is Mediterranean

Food?

When you think of Mediterranean food, you may picture pitas and hummus, and little else. The cuisine of the countries surrounding the

Mediterranean Sea, however, is extremely diverse. So just what is Mediterranean food? It includes staple dishes from European countries such as Greece, Italy and Spain; North African countries, such as Algeria, Libya and Morocco; and Middle Eastern countries,

such as Lebanon, Syria and Turkey. This region is rich in a wide variety of ingredients and spices that make ordinary food pop with flavor. What's more, the food of the Mediterranean region is prepared with fresh, healthy ingredients that are actually good for you. In fact, it is this perfect marriage of taste and

nutrition that has made Mediterranean food so popular throughout the world – and Pita Jungle so popular here in the Southwest. For centuries, the residents of countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea have enjoyed a lower risk of certain cancers, reduced risk of developing heart disease and

increased longevity overall. (Source: http://www.webmd.com/food-

recipes/guide/the-mediterranean-diet). One of the reasons for this is daily exercise. But another, equally important, reason is a healthy, balanced diet. What is Mediterranean

food's secret to better health? The Mediterranean diet is rich in lean proteins, like chicken, fish and legumes; fresh fruits and vegetables; whole, unprocessed grains; seeds and nuts; healthy fats like olive oil; and a limited intake of dairy and red meats. It all adds up to a nutritionally balanced diet that

of a horse and rider. The horse represents the

id, a powerful force that offers the energy to

propel forward motion. The rider represents

the ego, the guiding force that directs the

power of the id toward a goal.

Freud noted, however, that this relationship

did not always go as planned.

In less ideal situations, a rider may find

himself simply along for the ride as he allows

his horse to go in the direction the animal

wants to go. Just as with the horse and rider,

the id's primal urges may sometimes be too

powerful for the ego to keep in check.

In her own 1936 book The Ego and the

Mechanisms of Defense, Anna Freud that all

of the ego's defenses against the id were

carried out behind the scenes.

These measures against the id are known as

the defense mechanisms, which are carried out

silently and invisibly by the ego.

While we cannot observe the defenses in

action, Anna Freud suggested that they could

be observed in retrospect. Repression is one

example. When something is repressed from

awareness, the ego is not aware that the

information is missing. It is only later, when it

become obvious that some piece of

information or a memory is gone, that the

actions of the ego become apparent.

Travel Try to choose well in your

travel from the first time so it turn everyone

on to look forward to revisit at least once

again in our life time. Summer is about

vacation time, relaxing, and what else on top

of the list but at least one place to visit or

revisit. You must admit that it is in our

bones, as we grew up going to places with

our parents, school trips, and Boy Scouts.

Must visit also activities and places around this Amazing Place (THE NORTH SHORES).

Attractions & Activities Major

Markets | Lessons | Tours | Services

Many of the beach and nature parks

that line the North Shore offer stunning

views of the Pacific Ocean and O’ahu’s

natural beauty. Two such places are

Pu’u O Mahuka Heiau above Waimea,

O’ahu’s oldest and largest ancient

Hawaiian religious site, and Ka’ena

Point to the west. In season, catch a

glimpse of whales frolicking in the sea,

pack a picnic lunch and watch surfers

brave the winter swells, or go

beachcombing and discover turtles and

monk seals. Better yet, take a glider

ride and see breathtaking views of the

North Shore as well as the whales

below.

process HERE.

State Parks is now accepting applications

for the 2016 Kaena Point vehicle access

permits at its new online special use permit

website (see link above or below).

Applicants will need to create a login

account before accessing the application

page. This same account and password will

also be used to obtain the weekly gate

combination as needed. Combinations will

not be distributed by mass email or text

after December 30, 2015. Once submitted,

applicants will receive an email confirming

approval of their permit and should receive

the permit and 2016 vehicle decal by mail

within 5 working days. Permits can also be

obtained at the State Park office during

working business hours.

In 2014, the Division of State Parks

designated a portion of Kaʻena Point State

Park Reserve, Mokule’ia Section, a

controlled vehicle access area. This action

was taken after years of uncontrolled off-

road vehicle use and other prohibited

actions continued to negatively impact the

park’s natural and cultural resources and

disturb park users. Anyone wanting to drive

a vehicle into the controlled section (beyond

the paved parking lot and locked gate)

needs to obtain a free permit. This does not

apply to users who hike or bike on the dirt

road behind the locked gate. Permits must

be renewed annually and, among other

conditions, require drivers to stay on the

major upper road and designated shoreline

access roads. Signs and colored survey

markers help identify the designated routes.

Users issued a permit have access to the

combination on the gate lock which changes

once a week each Wednesday morning

before 9am. Permit holders can now access

the weekly gate combination online using

their Ka‘ena Point special use permit login

account. Permit holders without internet

access can call State Parks at 587-0300 for

the weekly combination. Please have permit

number available.

San Antonio Tx The

Riverwalk At Night

Paseo Del Rio

Postcard

Once a frontier settlement in the Wild

West, San Antonio has become a

modern city full of modern amenities. As

one of the top shopping destinations in

the nation, San Antonio offers upscale

boutiques, multiple shopping malls and

the largest Mexican market in the United

States. The city is also famous for its

scenic River Walk, which makes getting

around downtown a breeze. Stretching

15 miles from start to finish, the River

Walk’s shaded pathways connect

hundreds of shops, restaurants, hotels,

historic landmarks, museums and

attractions. It’s also the setting for many

of the city’s annual festivals and events

featuring food, wine, live music and

more. With a unique culture stemming from

Spanish, German and American roots, San

Antonio offers an abundance of history, arts and

exciting cuisine. Take the River Walk to the

north and you’ll find museums filled with

everything from Picassos to Western

memorabilia and the Pearl, an exciting culinary

and shopping destination. To the south, the

River Walk leads to four Spanish missions that

once provided shelter for frontier settlers, and

still provide some of the best bird watching

around. Perhaps most notable of all San

Antonio’s missions is the Alamo, located in the

heart of downtown. The Missions and the Alamo

have been named a World Heritage Site by the

United Nations Educational, Scientific and

Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Just a short way outside of downtown, you’ll find

five different theme parks, more than 50 golf

courses, one of the largest zoos in America, the

largest caverns in Texas and miles of hike and

bike trails stretching into the Texas Hill Country,

a region quickly gaining recognition for its

wineries. All in all, San Antonio is one

unforgettable city where you’ll never run out of

things to do. And if you ever need a suggestion,

just ask one of the friendly locals.

The San Antonio River Walk

Beginning at the city’s center, the San Antonio

River runs for 386 kilometers before emptying

into the Gulf of Mexico. While in 1921 this river

brought disaster to the city in the form of a

flood, today it brings liveliness through the San

Antonio River Walk.

Nestled one story beneath downtown, the San

Antonio River Walk is a system of walkways

along the banks of the San Antonio River.

Stretching across eight kilometers of

downtown, the River Walk combines the

tranquility of water with the bustle of urban

life.

Lined with shops, restaurants and bars, the

River Walk provides access to daily amenities

as well as tourist attractions like the Alamo,

the San Antonio Museum of Art and the

Arneson River Theater.
