    Science City Showcase Event

On 17th May Newcastle Science City organised a showcase event to publicise some of

the cutting edge science research being carried out in the region. EECE School was

represented by the Nick Baker, Glyn Atkinson, and Jamie Washington of PEDM group.

Over 700 people came through the doors over the course of the day, including peoplefrom local schools, industry and the public. The event was covered by Tyne Tees news,

including a short interview with Glynn.

Congratulations to Bing Ji (supervisor Dr. Pickert) who hasrecently received the Henry Lester scholarship award for his

research studies in the subject areas of prognostic and health

monitoring of power semiconductor modules. The Henry Lester

Trust grants Chinese students studying in the UK for high

    academic achievements.

Young Scientist Award atInternational Union of RadioScience (URSI), GASS 2011.Congratulations to Dr. RajeshTiwari for receiving anInternational Union of RadioScience (URSI) 2011 Young

    Scientist award. The award

    worth about 1000 Euros covers

    his expenses to attend the

    URSI General Assembly and

    Scientific Symposium in

    Istanbul, Turkey in August this

year. At this meeting he will

    present his Young Scientist

    paper entitled WBMod

    Assisted PLL GPS Software

    Receiver for Mitigating

    Scintillation Effects at High

    Latitude Region.

DATE 2011 & Async 2011 ConferencesThe MSD group saw its research excellence

    recognized in two premier international

conferences in the last few months. First our

paper Run-Time Deadlock Detection in Networks-

    on-Chip Using Coupled Transitive Closure

    Networks, by Al-Dujaily, R., Mak, T., Xia, F.,

Yakovlev, A., and Palesi M., presented by Dr

Terrence Mak at the Design, Automation & Test in

    Europe Conference & Exhibition (DATE11),

Grenoble, March 2011, was elected by the

conference as a Best Paper Prize candidate.

Then at the 17th IEEE International Symposium on Asynchronous Circuits and Systems

(ASYNC'11), Ithaca, NY, April 2011, two papers from the group were also chosen as Best Paper

Prize candidates. These are A novel power delivery method for asynchronous load in energy

harvesting systems, by Zhang, X., Shang, D., Xia, F., Yakovlev, A., presented by Xuefu Zhang andVariation Tolerant Asynchronous FPGA, by Low, H.-S., Shang, D., Xia, F., Yakovlev, A., presented

by Dr Delong Shang. Both conferences had very high rejection rates this year, and no more than

15% of all papers presented won these candidate awards.

Professor Alex Yakovlev has spent one month, in

May-June 2011, as a visiting professor at the

Technical University of Vienna (Austria), on the

    invitation from Professor Andreas Steininger.

During his stay in Vienna he gave an advanced

course on asynchronous system design to the

local PhD students and took part in research

discussions with the members of the Embedded

Computer Systems group (led by Professors Ulrich

Schmid) on topics of shared research interest,

including FPGAs, GALS, Networks on Chip, fault-

    tolerant asynchronous systems. These

interactions are likely to lead to a continued

    collaboration between Newcastle and Vienna,

including supervision of PhD students and joint

    participation in EU research projects.

    Dr Charalampos Tsidenidis and Professor

Bayan Sharif gave a Professional Tutorial

in this years IEEE OCEANS 2011

    conference.

The title for the tutorial was "Signal

    waveform design for underwater acoustic

    communications"
