-24 hours notice is given for cancellation of an appointment

(otherwise a late cancellation fee of 50% of the original ser-

vice booked will be charged)

-that you try and come a few minutes early for your ap-

pointment to enjoy a frothy cappuccino and relax and set

the mood to gain maximum benefit

- avoid being late as your treatment time will be reduced in

consideration of the next appointment, with full charges

- turn off all mobile phones prior to entering rooms, and

have consideration that this is a quiet zone

Many of us are familiar with the term Antioxidants. While there has been

a lot mentioned in the media about the health benefits associated with consum-ing foods high in antioxidants, such as blueberries and raspberries, the use of

antioxidants in our skincare products is proving to have equally impressive re-sults when it comes to improving the

appearance and texture of our skin. What Is Oxidation?

Before we can understand antioxidants and what they do, we must first under-stand a naturally occurring process called oxidation.

Technically speaking, oxidation is de-fined as the process where one electron

is lost when two or more substances in-teract. During the oxidation process, free radicals are produced.

When it comes to our skin, these free radicals attack and damage healthy cells, such as those contained in our skin

and within other living organisms such as plants. The body produces free radi-cals in the normal course of energy pro-

duction and we also encounter them in day-to-day life from various sources such as pollution, certain foods and addi-

tives, chemicals added to our water and even when light hits some plastics, fab-rics or paints.

To make it easier to understand, all of us are familiar with one oxidation process relating to our car. If left for prolonged

periods unprotected outside, the expo-sure to the oxygen in the air causes rust to develop on the car.

What Are Antioxidants?

Antioxidants are molecules that slow down and minimise the oxidation of oth-

er molecules.

In the case of our skin, the end result of damage caused by free radicals is a de-

terioration and ultimately breakdown of the quality and health of the skin's sur-face. Instead of skin that is exuberant, plump, soft, and radiant, skin leaving in

its place skin that appears dull, has light or dark sunspots, dry and wrinkled.

One of the most potent causes of free radical damage to our skin is from expo-sure to harmful UV rays from the sun.

Sun and UV ray exposure amplifies the oxidation process and free radicals accu-mulate on the surface of the skin, play-ing havoc with the cells, creating prema-

ture ageing, sun-spots, blemishes, wrin-kles and overall damaged and dry skin.

Why Are Antioxidants Important In Skincare?

It is believed that antioxidants in skin-

care are capable of penetrating into the deepest layers of skin tissue. In their ability to minimize the oxidation of mole-cules in our skin, antioxidants work pow-

erfully to reduce free radicals and enable the living cells of our skin to repair and renew. The end result is skin that looks

and feels years younger. Other benefits of antioxidants in skincare

are:

Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by making skin appear

plump, soft and renewed

Improve the tone of the skin by making it appear firmer and more 'alive'

Reduce inflammation of the skin and helping the skin to look and feel

A fabulous article from our wonderful skin care specialists and personal chem-ists, I really wanted to share with you.

A newborn baby's skin is thinner than that of a child or an adult and hasn't yet developed normal barrier function, so it is important to use the mildest and most simple of skincare on these precious little people. As their skin is new and delicate, a baby's skin does not need nor does it respond well to strong chemicals commonly found in perfumed cosmetics such as ordinary baby creams, balms and sham-poos. When a baby is born, we find ourselves in a rush to wash their skin and make them nice and clean, a kind of inaugura-tion to caring for our baby. However, in some cultures they leave the sticky white waxy coating known as the Vernix on their babies for days, as a measure to keep the skin moisturised and protected. To optimize the benefits of this wonder coating, they even massage it gently into their baby's skin. Vernix is one of nature's best defences against dryness and bacterial infections for your new baby's skin. It is rich in anti-microbials that are active against certain strains of harmful bacteria such as E.coli and group B streptococcus, so it offers excellent protection from nasty bugs that may be floating around the hospital. An instant moisturiser and protectant, Vernix is comprised of both skin oil and dead skin cells that the baby has shed in the womb and is the ideal substance to protect your baby's skin from dehydra-tion. Without the Vernix the baby would be born dry and wrinkly from constantly

being exposed to amniotic fluid. For those not partial to its appearance on their baby's skin, it usually disappears within a couple of days. Another common misconception about caring for the skin of a newborn is that they need soap. Soap is very dehydrating and drying to an adult's skin, so you can imagine how de-pleting it is to a little newborn's skin. It's very important to help preserve baby's natural oils and not strip them away with harsh cleansers. Many people choose body washes for babies, thinking they are gentler. While they may not be as dehydrating, there are many undesirable chemicals in most body washes, such as Sodium Lauryl Sul-fate, that you may not want to expose your new baby to. As an alternative, look for baby washes that use natural and gentle surfactants such as Yucca and Soapwort and Decyl Glucoside. This also applies to shampoos - although ba-by's don't really need them - water works especially well on their thin tufts of hair.

If you would like to use soap, look for those that have retained the glycerin or soaps that are known as being "superfat", made with extra moisturizing fats and oils. You'll find them in health food stores or markets where they have been handmade. These kinds of soaps are somewhat less drying than the host of commercially manufactured soaps on the market. A wonderful and time-honoured moistur-iser for baby's skin is unrefined vegetable oil. Employed with a flannel or muslin cloth, natural oils are very effective for lifting dirt, nourishing the skin and leav-ing the skin's barrier intact. You do need to be careful however, as it can make both the baby and the bath very slippery! These oils are ideally massaged into your babies skin directly after a warm bath and also provide the perfect way to con-nect and bond with your new little friend. Some of the most loved and gentlest oils for babies are: Virgin Coconut oil, Apricot Kernel oil, and Jojoba oil.

Skincare For Babies

Lipid rich butters and waxes can also be

helpful. African women are known for

gently massaging Shea butter into their

baby's skin to keep it strong, but soft

and supple. If your baby's skin is irritat-

ed, place some oats in a muslin cloth,

tie all ends up to create a wash ball and

use it in the bath with water. This wash

ball transforms into a beautiful oat milk

cleanser when you gently squeeze the

milk from the ball. This however can

only be used once and needs to be

made fresh. Oats are rich in skin nour-

ishing and strengthening nutrients and

are a time-honoured remedy for sooth-

ing irritated skin for children and adults.

If you do prefer to use a lotion on your

baby's skin, look for a chemical and fra-

grance free lotions that are designed

especially for babies.

A far cry from a designer baby product

but an exceptional skin healer for your

baby is breast milk. It is rich in lauric

acid, a super nutrient that helps fight

infection. If your baby has any skin

problems, try breast milk as a topical

agent.

If cradle cap develops, try a gentle

shampoo (see above) onto a soft bristle

brush and softly massage the scalp with

it. If it continues, massage a little Virgin

Coconut oil or Olive oil into the scalp

and wash it off the following morning,

this will help dissolve scales making

them soft and loose and easy to wash or

gently brush away with a soft baby

brush.

Another product that is best avoided on

babies is talcum powder. Talcum pow-

der has come under the spotlight in re-

cent times for the questionable ingredi-

ents it contains, but even worse for ba-

bies is that they can inhale particles of

the powder that can lead to choking or

chest infections. A baby with any respir-

atory condition can become very ill.

Natural balms that are free of chemi-

cals are very handy for rubbing onto any

dry patches, as well as helping to pre-

vent or soothe nappy rash. Look for

those that are simple in their formula-

tion and include ingredients such as

beeswax, butters and vegetable oils.

Of course, if your baby's skin becomes

red, irritated or you feel concerned, al-

ways seek the advice of your doctor

INNOCENCE AND NATURALNESS

Angelo began his career as a trainee Barber in his home town in Italy at the age of 11. Five years later he

moved to Rome to take up a job with Toni & Guy, but he already had his sights firmly set on London.

Since 1995 Angelo Seminara became Trevor Sorbies protg and International Creative Director. Angelo

Seminara has captivated clients and inspired the work of hair professionals around the world with his creative

drive and passion.

In 2010 Angelo went freelance and has been working all over the world on shows and seminars.

15th January 2011 Angelo started as the new Art Director for Davines Spa.

He has also developed an incredible reputation on the catwalk circuit and his celebrity client list is impressive,

but it hasnt gone to his head, he maintains his gentle nature and carries with him an aura of calm.

Angelo has always been absorbed with his work, and delights in creating new shapes and textures, constantly

pushing the boundaries seeing hair as a fabric. Today he remains captivated by the possibilities of hair, and

is adept at bringing out every clients natural beauty. Working closely with session stylist Eugene Soulieman, each season Angelo is involved with at least 30 inter-

national fashion shows in Paris, New York, London and Milan, where his creations have brought him interna-

tional acclaim. Angelos agent Streeters make sure he is also regularly commissioned for editorial work by

many of the worlds leading fashion and style magazines including Harpers Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Italian
