T he Camano Center is privileged to have Mac Frampton performing solo with us on the evening of Wednesday, Sep- tember 14 from 7-9 p.m. before he contin- ues on with a tour of a larger stage show. Mac Frampton has toured the world performing over 4,000 times to date and has a reputation of more than one standing ova- tion per performance. We heard a sampling of Mac playing Rhapsody in Blue on our new piano in the lobby two years ago and we knew our community would enjoy an evening with his incredible talents at the piano. We never imagined we’d be able to have him perform here but it is now hap- pening. It’s difficult to describe Mac Frampton’s performances since he doesn’t really fit any one mold. Roger William’s described Mac as “The one pianist who plays with his heart as well as his head.” Other reviewers have compared him to Horowitz combined with Liberace and then add some Victor Borge humor. What can you expect to hear during Mac Frampton’s program? You may hear what Mac refers to as jazzed-up classi- cal, or ragtime, or a medley of movie themes, TV show themes, a Disney medley or a rocking Southern Gospel medley, along with some of the standards and other ar- rangements he has created. Mac also often educates before he plays certain selections by giving a brief historical description of how certain pieces became popular in the music world. Be assured, there will be something for everyone of every age and often laced with much humor. The real surprise comes at the end of the evening. His ending number will have you saying “What just happened?” if you’re able to speak and you’ll know that ending piece alone was worth far more than the price of admission. Tickets go on sale July 1 and the early bird ticket price of $15 ends September 6th, so purchase your tickets now. If you have a lower mileage pickup in good me-chanical and physical repair that you are interested in donating to us, please call Roxanne at 360-629-6142.

S ummer is here. The

Camano Center grounds are so beautiful this time of year. Last month we celebrated the life of Dick Hepburn in our Legacy Garden. Many attendees said

that they had no idea that the garden was there. The Legacy Garden is a wonderful place to just sit and reflect. It is off the trailhead at the north end of the parking lot. Take time this month to walk the trails around the Center and watch the birds playing in all the water fea-tures. Thank you to our FOCIP friends for keeping the garden and trails in such good shape. I would also like to thank our Down to Earth

Gardeners for their work in tidying up the Sep-tember Garden. Big News this month is our 2nd Chance Thrift Shop Expansion Project. See the front page update for more details. It is been really ex-citing to see everyone jump in and get behind this important project. The thrift shop provides over 50% of the oper-ating revenue that keeps the lights and heat on at the Camano Center. It is a critical source of revenue and this addition will provide even more stable revenue to ensure our doors stay open. Thank you to Marilyn Grosjean for her challenge donation to our volunteers. It was met with resounding support. 2nd Chance Volunteers are organizing the first TRUNK SALE at the Camano Center on Sat-urday, July 16 from 10 to 4 pm. Each parking spot costs $20 and you can purchase one or more spots to sell your garage sale items out of your “trunk” or your parking space. The Cen-ter will do all the advertising for this giant

community garage sale in the Camano Center parking lot. All the money generated from sales of the parking spots and from sales for food and beverage will go towards the expan-sion of the new thrift shop. It should be a fun day. You can sign up for a space at the front desk of the Camano Center or plan on coming for the day to find your hidden treasures. Save the date- MONDAY, JULY 25 IS OUR ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING. Come to hear reports from the board and your staff, vote on the new board members, and en-joy a root beer float. The meeting starts at 6 pm in the Craft Room. Happy 4th of July everyone!!!

Kitchen Scoop

T he Camano Center staff and board would like to thank Darlene Miller for her 10

years of service as the Camano Center Book-keeper. Darlene retired on June 30th to spend more time traveling the world with her

husband who has been waiting patiently for her to join him in retirement!

Darlene’s passion for the mission and work of the Camano Center is evident in her involve-ment beyond employment at the Center as a volunteer, member and donor. She always steps forward to be the bake sale lead at the Craft Bazaar, manage the membership table at the Car Show, greet families at the Afternoon with Santa, work race day registration at the Crab Dash and has even been in the Women’s Expo fashion show! Darlene refers friends to the Center, donates items for and attends the Gala Auction and keeps the Center in her an-nual giving plans. She has given presentations on her trips at the Travel Talk series and is an incredible ambassador for the Center out in the community.

Thankfully, Darlene plans to continue her in-volvement with the Center as a volunteer. We will miss seeing her on a regular basis but wish her the best!

S ummer’s here – and it’s the perfect time to take to the water! Even if you missed

the Deception Pass Whale Watch tour in June, there are still a few seats left on the One-Hour Deception Pass Jet Boat Tour on July 7, and a chance to enjoy a beautiful, truly “waterfront” dining experience on the Chuckanut Cracked Crab Dinner Cruise on August 26. Did you know that if you take one of the Deception Pass boat trips, you will get a Season Pass that can be used over and over all summer long and into the early fall? It can be used for any Jet Boat Tour, and applied toward the cost of a whale watch tour as well. Be sure to check out their website for details: http://www.deceptionpasstours.com.

If you’d rather we “take you out to the ball-game,” and you hurry, we might still be able to get you tickets to the Mariner’s Senior Day on Wednesday, July 20, but they’re going fast!

Maybe you’re ready to cool off indoors for awhile. We have three museum trips to look forward to. The first is on July 14 for a famous Norwegian artist’s exhibit, “Edvard Munch and the Sea” at the Tacoma Art Mu-seum. Then, in August, we’ll be going to the S.A.M. (Seattle Art Museum) for an amazing display, “Graphic Masters.” Come September, we’ll get a bit less serious with our trip to MO-HAI (Museum of History & Industry) to re-visit our own childhoods (and introduce the kids to what life was like ‘way back then) with the “Toys of the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s” exhibit. Bring the grandkids along!

BIG NEWS!!! Did you know that we now have TWO 14 passenger vehicles?!? Come on one of our trips to find out what the generosity of last year’s Gala Auction “Fund a Need” bidders has made possible for your future comfort and safety on our Camano Center Trips!

Camano Crab Dash—5K/10K Family Fun Run An All Ages Event that Benefitted the Camano Center

T hank you to all of the racers, volunteers and sponsors involved in the Camano

Center Crab Dash 5K/10K on Saturday, June 11th. The rain held off as close to 300 racers lined up to walk, run, and scamper for the fifth annual Crab Dash to raise funds for the Ca-mano Center! Medals were awarded for the top three female and male runners and ribbons went to the top three finishers in EACH age group. Skagit Valley Regional Health was our pre-senting sponsor this year with Pope Chiroprac-tic, RE/MAX Associate Brokers, Momentum Performance Training, The Everett Clinic, and Stanwood Swim & Fitness all joining in as sponsors of the 2016 Crab Dash. Subway, Road Runner Sports and KIND bars offered in-kind products for participants. Cold water kept racers hydrated with Island Harvest Farm, Pope Chiropractic and Utsalady Ladies Aid all hosting water stations along the route. Stanwood Swim & Fitness kicked off the event with a warm-up to get racers stretched out and ready to go and Margaret Pilcher from Pope Chiropractic worked many hours organizing registration and race day packets. Thank you to all involved! We are lucky to live in such a supportive community!

The Long Days of June

I n June our surroundings were transformed by the lowest tides of the year and the longest days with the sunrise far north on the horizon

and sunset far north as well. Only a few hours of full darkness between the hours of light.

In fact, during June and July, a solar PV system will generate almost five times as much energy as it does in December.

The PV Watts Calculator is an excellent online resource for estimating how much solar power a rooftop is likely to generate for each month of the year. The Calculator is run by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and funded by the U.S. Dept of Energy.

To use the Calculator, start by putting in an address. Then choose the closest weather stations that best matches the site’s weather. The cal-culator uses historical weather data to predict future weather and hours of solar resource.

You need to put in the tilt (pitch) of the roof and the direction it faces (azimuth). Due south is 180 degrees. With these details, plus solar sys-tem size (usually 5 to 10 KW for residential size systems), you can get an estimate of the total solar electricity a rooftop will produce.

When a solar site evaluation is done by a professional, then they add a site specific test using a Suneye tool which then accounts for the spe-cific degree of shading from nearby trees, buildings, chimneys, smoke-stacks, etc for 365 days of the year.

In this chart, you can see PV Watts month by month projected output estimate for Camano Center’s solar system. Interestingly output in July is over 6 times greater than December.

Joan Schrammeck with Fire Mountain Solar Solar Panels at the Camano Center were installed by Fire Mountain Solar in November 2014.
