Judo is a very popular martial art which originated in Japan, but is now practiced all over the world. It involves various kinds of techniques. Throwing techniques, standing techniques, sacrifice techniques and grappling techniques are used extensively in this martial art. All these techniques have been discussed briefly for those interested in pursuing Judo.

Nage-waza is the Japanese name of grappling technique. It involves throwing an opponent to the ground by off-balancing or lifting him. It involves a pulling and rotating motion while maintaining balance.

Standing Techniques (Tachi-Waza)

Tachi-waza are executed from a standing position. These can be categorised into Hand techniques (Te-waza), Foot / Leg techniques (Ashi-waza), and Hip techniques (Koshi-waza).

Sacrifice Techniques (Sutemi-Waza)

Sutemi-waza involves landing on the back or side to throw the opponent. The Sutemi-waza has two categories Ma-sutemi-waza (Back Sacrifice) and Yoko-sutemi-waza (Side Sacrifice).

Grappling Techniques: Katame-Waza

The Katame-waza technique is used when both opponents are lying on the ground. This technique can be divided into: Kansetsu-waza (Joint locks), Kansetsu-waza (Choking techniques), and Osae-Komi-waza (Pinning techniques).
