Gilad Atzmon
2pm: gilad atzmon’s orient house ensemble featuring Sarah Gillespie
Gilad Atzmon was born in Israel in 1963 and had his musical training at the Rubin Academy of Music, Jerusalem. Highly respected in the jazz world Gilad is the musical equivalent of a magpie, collecting jewels and treasures from the Middle East, North Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia, skilfully weaving them into his ornate nest of Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Cannonball, Dizzies Gillespie, Miles Davis and Bill Evans.
Sarah Gillespie is a dynamic, thoughtful extraordinarily talented young woman who as an artist with something very real to say deserves massive exposure. Her sincere contribution to last years festival was both beautiful and extraordinary.
4pm: kelvin christiane quintet featuring Paul Jayasinha
London born, classically trained Kelvin Christiane gravitated towards jazz in his early teens, he lives locally, is professor of saxophone at Hampton School and together with his wife Lesley Christiane runs Richmond and Twickenham Jazz Club. Kelvin is a prolific composer and virtuoso performer on alto and tenor saxophone, clarinet and flute. He has produced 15 original albums to date. He performs world wide at jazz festivals and clubs.
Paul Jayasinha, a gifted child prodigy with a Scottish mother and Sri Lankan father who now works on some of the biggest International musical, charity Jazz projects, fascinated as he is by the ambiguities of World Rhythms, Politics and life itself.
Expect a buoyant, creative, energetic set of known standards and originals from their new album ‘Paladian Tales’.
6pm: the three tenorsDon Weller, Mornington Lockett and Art Themen
Heartwarming jazz.
A rare opportunity to enjoy music from these three very special tenor players. Each a jazz legend within this own right with his very own distinctive, and original and voice. Together they perfectly compliment and contrast each others styles which makes for engrossing musical dialogue and imaginative stamina and humour. There’s no edgy ego protective competition amongst them they are totally relaxed with mutual respect and collective insouciance which leads to endless entertainment, surprises and joy.
8pm: back to basie orchestra featuring vocalist Jacqui Hicks
Directed by trumpet player Paul Lacey, Back to Basie features brilliant London session musicians and jazz soloists all dedicated to playing the music of Count Basie’s second great orchestra of the 1950’s and 1960’s. The band captures the sound of Basie’s legendary ‘Swinging Machine’ with uncanny accuracy and style.
In addition to great reviews Back to Basie has won the Big Band category of the British Jazz Awards six times in the last seven years 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, no other British Big Band has achieved this.
“Brilliant a really exciting band” Dame Cleo Lane
“They took their instruments and lifted the roof off ” Sunday Times
2pm: alan barnes quartetA lively start to our second day with gifted Manchurian Alan Barnes.
Twice winner of the BBC Jazz Awards for best instrumentalist Alan plays alto and baritone saxophones and clarinet. Playing mostly carefully chosen standards his main criteria is that the music should swing like mad. He has played with Charlie Watts, Bryan Ferry and Bjork amongst many others.
Much loved on the British and international jazz scene he regularly appears in The Michael Parkinson Big Band. He is also the boss of Woodville Records which has released some of the finest jazz recordings produced in the UK.
4pm: mingus movesMulti award winning saxophonist Toni Kofi, trumpet legend Henry Lowther and internationally acclaimed local musician Chris Biscoe delve into the eternals and ethereal kaleidoscope of music from Charles Mingus
A troubled soul, Mingus music is yet another example of the unacknowledged genius of yesterday finding its voice in 2012 and studied at all major international jazz academies.
Mingus was arguably one of the most important band leaders and composer to follow Duke Ellington. His musical portraits were of friends, lovers and one particularly well trained house cat.
Chris Biscoe’s CDs ‘Gone in The Air’ and ‘Profiles of Mingus’ are now on their second pressing and will be available at the Festival.
6pm: ian shaw & liane carol & a grand piano
Two stunning voices, two magnificent singer-pianists, two great friends whose sensitive and somewhat unpredictable rapport makes every performance they give together as personal, illuminating and dusted with informal jazz genius as any jazz connoisseur or mere observer could enjoy. Ian Shaw and Liane Carroll bring incorrigible wit, musical class soulfulness and incredible personality, to a repertoire that embraces the jazz songbook, carefully selected contemporary songs as well as many of their own acclaimed and very brilliant originals. Prepare for an emotional roller coaster for this very special acoustic session with these multiple BBC Jazz Award winners.
8.30pm: echoes of ellington orchestraThe climax of our festival features Pete Long’s All Star Big Band playing a stunning selection of Duke Ellington’s music including excerpts from ‘The Queens Suite’. Pete is a versatile woodwind musician and arranger and the presenter of Big Band Special on Radio 2.
The Queens Suite This exquisite piece of music was written by Duke Ellington after he met the young Queen Elizabeth II in 1958 at a private reception to mark the Bicentenary of Leeds Festival. So inspired and moved was he by the meeting that he locked himself away to compose a piece of music for her, working also with the iconic lyricist and composer Billy Strayhorn. Only one LP pressing was made and sent directly to Buckingham Palace. The music is widely regarded as one of Ellington’s most beautiful and sensitive works. Sadly it was never released during his lifetime.
sunday 3 june monday 4 june
Building on the success of our first Strawberry Hill Jazz Festival in 2011, we are proud to be presenting a two day celebratory festival in honour of Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee on Sunday 3 June and Monday 4 June 2012 in the newly restored grounds of Strawberry Hill House.
An outstanding daily programme of varied jazz music and musicians will culminate each evening with a spectacular All Star Big Band Concert in the main marquee.
Entertaining was at the heart of Horace Walpole’s philosophy for his Gothic house, and it is widely believed by our hard working team of volunteers and staff that his ghost still inhabits the glorious rooms and gardens. Hence we have it on good authority that our ghost thoroughly enjoyed The Strawberry Jazz Festival in 2011 and is looking forward to an even bigger and better event in 2012.
Funds raised are for the continued restoration and maintenance of the house and grounds.
We hope that you will join us.
Best wishes,
