    JOHN THEODORE MUELLER

    18851967

    John Theodore Mueller was born near Janesville, Minn*, April 5, 1885,

    the son of the Rev Andrew Mueller and wife Ottilie, After preparation in

    St, Paul, Milwaukee, and Fort Wayne Concordias, he entered Concordia Semi-

    nary in St, Louis and was graduated in 1907* Up on graduation he became

    an instructor at Luther College in New Orleans, and subsequently at Witten-

    berg Academy, Wittenberg, Wis, In 1913 he became pastor of St, John 's

    Church in Hubbell, Mich,, and in 1917 at Zion in Ottawa and Trinity in

    Marseilles, 111, In 1920 he was called as professor of dogmatics and exegesis

    at Concordia Seminary, where he continued to teach until his retirementJune 30, 1964, In 1927 he earned the degree of Th , D, from Xenia Th eo -

    logical Seminary then in St Louis and pursued graduate studies also elsewhere

    In 1908 he married Adeline Meibohm, who preceded him in death in

    1959, His sons, the Reverends Armand, Norbert, and Arlo, and his daughters

    Irma and Marilyn mourn his death.

    He was one of the last of a generation of seminary professors who were

    competent in many fields. He worked and taught in both original Biblical

    languages. Called as support to the late Franz Pieper, he produced the volumethat first conveyed the contents of Pieper's Dogmatik in English ( 1934 ) andin 1946 prepared a one-volume revision for use by German pastors. He was

    deeply interested in missions, was the editor of Die Missionstaabe from 1923to 1929, for 13 years was a member of the missionary board of the Synodical

    Conference, and prepared numerous volumes on missionary themes. He was

    a coeditor of Der Lutheraner from 1920 until his last illness. He was chairman of the Young People's Literature Board of The Lutheran Church

    Missouri Synod for 30 years. He was one of the first commissioners to the

    Bad Boll conference in Germany after World War II, He contributed to theCONCORDIA THEOLOGICAL MONTHLY since 1920, For many years he con

    tributed materials to the Lutheran Annual and to the Kalender.

    For 27 years he was assistant pastor of Bethlehem Church in St, Louis,

    In recent years during a prolonged vacancy at Bethany Church, he rendered

    appreciated services of preaching and pastoral care. He was an indefatigable

    essayist, lecturer, and writer, and a poet (especially in German) of no mean

    ability.

    On Feb, 17, 1966, he was incapacitated by a severe stroke, and his last

    months were spent at the nursing home of the Lutheran Altenheim in St, Louis,

    His death came at Lutheran Hospital on April 15, 1967, The funeral service

    was conducted on April 19 at Bethany Lutheran Church, with the Rev, George

    J, Mueller, pastor of Bethany Church, officiating and the Rev, Prof, Richard

    R, Caemmerer preaching. The committal service was conducted by the Rev,

    Elmer J, Schwartzkopf, chaplain of the Lutheran Altenheim, On May 11,

    1967, a memorial service was conducted in the chapel of Concordia Seminary

    by Dr, Martin H, Franzmann, chairman of the Department of Exegesis, of

    which Dr, Mueller had been a member. The sermon preached on that occasion

    is reproduced on the following pages.
