THE MARCO EFFECT – VOL. 5 ‘ e most boring day in the world’, a news-paper called the day of April 11, 1954. But for the boy Marco it was the day that delivered the worst thing that could ever happen to him: the birth of his uncle Zola. Decades later, Zola coldly and cynically destroys and abuses people and forces the members of his clan into crime.

JOURNAL 64 – VOL. 4 Until only 40 years ago “maladjusted” or simply unlucky Danish women were deported to a little island where malice, mistreatment and torture-like methods were employed to maintain order. Nete Hermansen came here and was also able to escape – or so she thought. e day the past caught up with her became the start of one of Department Q’s most complicated cases.

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE – VOL. 3 In Scotland, a bottle was forgotten on a windowsill for a long, long time. Inside was a barely readable note; the only two things that were certain were that the rst word was the Danish word for HELP and that it was written in blood. Carl Mørck and his assistant Assad nd them-selves drawn into a scary case of cults and disappearing siblings.

THE PHEASANT KILLERS – VOL. 2 In 1987, a brother and sister are found brutally killed in a summer house. e police investigation suggests that the killer is to be found within a group of young boarding-school pupils from some of the wealthiest families in the country. But the evidence is not strong enough and the case is shelved until one of the suspects turns himself in and confesses that he is responsible for the killings.

THE WOMAN IN THE CAGE – VOL. 1 On a beautiful winter's day the young, progressive politician Merete Lynggaard disappears without a trace. e media are all over the story with their headlines suggesting anything from murder and suicide to a planned voluntary disappearance. e police immediately com-mence a large-scale investigation, alas with no result. Carl Mørck, the deputy detective superintendent who has been through a lot in his time, is put in charge of the new department for "cases of special focus".

A B O U T T H E B O O K Having recently been red from her job as a journalist for one of Denmark’s major newspapers, Eva Katz’s life has stalled. She is 35 years old and lives in a xer-upper – with a devastating grief she can’t share with anyone.

When she is o ered a job at a kindergarten, she thinks of it as a fresh start in life. But in the meeting with a ve year old boy Eva’s life is turned upside down, as she begins to suspect that the boy has been witness to the gruesome murder of a family member. e boy won’t talk about it, and since the authorities have written it o as suicide, Eva follows the only clues she has: a child’s crude drawing and the fact that the little boy comes from an unusual family. His mother is the Danish Crown

Princess’s lady-in-waiting and the little boy has the run of the royal household.

It gradually dawns on Eva that the crime implicates the Danish royal family – and can be traced back to a 200 year old society that is still actively trying to reinstate monarchs across Europe.

A Holy Alliance is a thoroughly researched, fast paced thriller about the war between democracy and monarchy. It takes the reader behind the Disney façade of Europe’s royal families and exposes them for what they are: a large, powerful family, tied together by intermarriage, that wages war to maintain and increase its privileges.

T H E AU T H O R S A.J. Kazinski is the pseudonym of authors Anders Rønnow Klarlund and Jacob Weinreich. A.J. Kazinski is also the author of the international bestseller The Last Good Man (2010) and Sleep and Death (2012). ”BLOODY GOOD”

– Jyske Medier

A formidable novel. A story that oozes suspense and drama (…) US is a contemporary novel, unravelling the life we strive for and the dreams we have (…) There is plenty of humour in the novel since Sabroe possesses the gift of wittiness.”

– Nordjyske Stiftstidende

”The novel is a tour de force, like an American skyscraper (…) A multifaceted thriller of rare quality.”

– Jyllands-Posten

” Present are the crescendos bursting with energy, which are always to be found in Sabroe’s prose (…) Then there is the sex and lasciviousness, powerful men throwing spectacular parties, while their cheating and subdued wives read The Great Gatsby in their boudoirs, hate and revenge – and love.”

– Politiken

“ This critical satire Sabroe mixes with a melodramatic and violent thriller about fraternal rifts, fatherly failures, vigilantism, destruc-tion of the male, and sex at the inappropriate time and place.”

” Morten Sabroe writes well and with recklessness. US is elementary thrilling as an entity fascinating and scary and it is very difficult to put aside. I am excited about this well-written novel, which has a drive, a violence and an intensity like a crime story.”

A B O U T T H E B O O K At birth the seven children have only two things in common: ey all come into the world in Maternity Ward B at the National Hospital in Copenhagen, and they are all given up for adoption. In the following months, the women who run Kongslund, the famed orphanage, nd new families for the children in di erent parts of Denmark. ey grow up without the slightest clue about their past.

Many years later an anonymous letter is sent to a down-and-out journalist at a failing newspaper. e letter reveals that one of the seven children carries a secret, and someone has done everything possible to keep that secret hidden. When the story goes public, it brings about explosive consequences. Could it be that for the past fty years the prestigious or-phanage has been covering up the love a airs of wealthy and famous Danes, hiding scandalous liaisons that took place at the highest levels of society?

e seven adopted children, now adults, are swept up in the search to uncover their past. At the same time, they are despe-rately trying to gure out which of them is the seventh child, and what could be the nature of the secret that person holds.

”A tour de force”

A B O U T T H E B O O K e Curse is the dramatic story of Søren Kierkegaard, the brilliant and mad master thinker, whose passion-ate focus on the “single individual” and the necessity to “imitate Christ” revolutionised philosophy and shook theology to its core. In the tradition of Dostoyevsky and Kafka, e Curse places its main character in a universe where crime and punishment, sin and mercy constantly uctuate between reality and illusion, so the reader is dragged into Kierkegaard’s meditations and takes part in his existential battle with God and humanity. In this respect e Curse is a theologi-cal novel, but also it provides a psycho-logical portrait of a human who with tragic pathos put heaven and earth in motion in order to nd the truth he could live and die for. Kierkegaard’s opponents, Bishop Mynster and Professor Martensen, his unhappy love for Regine, his brother Peter, and his friend Emil are represented together with many other characters in this great tale of veneration

and perversion, murder and perjury, the falsi cation of the gospel by the church – and of a shepherd boy’s fateful cursing of God.

T H E A U T H O RPeter Tudvad (born 1966) holds a Master’s Degree in Philosophy with subsidiary studies in eology and Political Science. He has worked at the Søren Kierkegaard Research Centre Foundation at Copenhagen University and has written several books on Ki-erkegaard, amongst others the critically acclaimed Kierkegaard’s Copenhagen (2004) and the scandal-ridden Stages on the Road of Antisemitism: Søren Kierkegaard and the Jews (2010). Further he has written the documen-tary bestseller Nurse in the ird Reich (2009) and translated vari-ous books on World War II. e Curse is his rst novel.

A B O U T T H E B O O K It’s a winter evening in 1979. e boy tells the police what he saw: a car ran over his father. e people in the car did it on purpose; they drove up on the sidewalk to run him over. And then they backed up and drove o , he says.

No one believes the boy, who is ten years old. ey tell him it must have been a drunk driver, that the street was slippery, a lot of people lose control of cars in snow that high.

e boy visits his father at the hospital. His father insists on talking to him in private, and he bequeaths to his son a verse. It’s a type of oath – a promise his son must keep. A promise that he gave to his own father, a promise that has been given through generations, as far back as anyone can remember, always from father to son. A promise to stand on Mt. Washington in the U.S. on October 3rd, 2000, at dawn. en his father dies.

Twenty years later, the boy is now a man to whom life has not been kind. He’s in a European prison, an ocean away from his destination. His woman waits outside the prison. She’s pregnant, only a few weeks away from giving birth. And a few weeks from when he must be on the mountain at daybreak. But if he ees prison and enters the U.S. illegally, he may never see his child. Who knows, he could be shot trying to escape, drown on his way across the Atlantic, freeze to death on the mountain. But he must

go – he has to nd out who killed his father on that winter night and what lies behind that cryptic oath, why Europe’s dark history has chosen him and his family to play a special role. He’s not a man who has wasted his life on long speeches and ne words. But now he needs them. Words. If he must leave the one he loves and his unborn child, he has to explain to them why. e night before he breaks out, he begins his story.

My beloved unborn child, this is the story of why I left you. T H E AU T H O R Anders R. Klarlund (b. 1971) is one half of the A.J. Kazinski moniker with whom he has written two bestselling novels, The Last Good Man (2010) and Sleep and Death (2012).

A B O U T T H E B O O K e most highly decorated soldier in Denmark’s history, Niels Oxen, scrapes through life in a gritty neighbourhood of Copenhagen. Hoping to escape his inner demons, the retired Elite Soldier relocates to Northern Jutland together with his dog, setting up camp deep in Rold For-est in a bid to live the simple life. But the dream turns into a nightmare for Niels Oxen. After a night-time visit to a medieval castle on the edge of the forest, he is suspected of the murder of the castle’s owner, a former ambassador and founder of an in uential think tank. e Danish Security and Intelligence Service appears remarkably quickly, and before the pressured war veteran has time to blink, he has been sucked into the investiga-tion of a string of mysterious murders. Murders that seemingly only have one thing in common: hanged dogs… e unorthodox Intelligence agent Margrethe Franck assists Oxen. Deliber-ate omissions of the truth and a general mistrust makes their partnership extremely di cult, but slowly they fall into step in the hunt for the mur-derers, even as the motive for the crime remains completely in the dark.

Hangdogs is the rst volume in a new series featuring the traumatised war veteran Niels Oxen. e rst three volumes in the series have individual story lines – but are tied together by an overreaching plot: the veteran’s struggle for rehabilitation, and his battle with a secret power elite that have roots stretching all the way back to the Danes Court, the medieval Danish parliament.

A Danish professor of microbiology and his daughter appear to have died in an accident while on diving holiday in northern Kenya, near the Somali border. By chance, the Danish Defence Intelligence Service discovers that the two may still be alive, kidnapped by Al Qaeda and the Somali allies of the terrorist organisation, Al Shabaab, and held in an unknown location in Somalia.

The professor is forced to build a biological weapon con-taining a deadly virus, meant to be detonated in a major European city. Thousands of lives are at stake and panic is spreading in Danish and foreign intelligence circles.

Special Forces soldier Michael Plessner is put on the case and his mission is clear: go in with a handpicked Special Forces team, free the Danish hostages and prevent Al Qaeda and Al Shabaab from carrying out their planned terrorist attack.

In a frantic race against the clock, Michael Plessner and his men secretly infiltrate deep into Somalia with the help of a local militia, and once more Michael Plessner has to face his nemesis, Al Qaeda’s top terrorist Mohammed Jamal Azzam.

Meanwhile the fate of the two missing Danes unfolds. One turns out to be playing a very unexpected role in a cynical and calculating conspiracy. Black Dawn is the second book about Michael Plessner and his team.

SCANDINAVIAN STAR

J P / P O LI T I K EN P U B LI S H ER S 2 0 1 3

A B O U T T H E B O O KThe arson aboard the ship the Scandinavian Star the night of 7th

April 1990 is Scandinavia’s biggest unsolved crime. 159 people lost their lives in the blaze. 23 years on, it is still unclear who set fire to the ship and why. Was the conflagration started by a py-romaniac as claimed by the authorities? Or are the perpetrators to be found among unscrupulous ship owners and their cronies in the ship’s crew? The case has never been fully investigated, provoking endless theories and speculation. This book aims to tell the definitive story of the Scandinavian Star tragedy, as accurately as is possible in a documentary report. Previous books on the subject of the fire have been more narrowly concerned with specific aspects of the case or with technical descriptions of the many details of the original investigation. Scandinavian Star gives us the whole story from beginning to end.

The manuscript will be ready for translation December 2014 and will be published in Denmark April 2015 (in time for the 25th anniversary of the disaster).

Many survivors and relatives of victims have asked themselves whether the ship was set on fire in an attempt to pocket insu-rance money. $24 million was eventually paid out to the Ameri-can company SeaEscape, who were the registered owners of the ship at the time of the fire, although a Danish company claimed that they had only recently bought the ship from the Americans. As a consequence, the Danish business man Henrik Johansen was convicted for negligence with regard to safety procedures on-board together with the ship’s captain, Hugo Larsen, and shipping director Ole B. Hansen, in 1993.

For survivors and relatives it remains a mystery why the courts considered Henrik Jansen to be the sole owner of the ship, when the insurance money was paid to the company SeaEscape. The truth is that the ownership issues surrounding the Scandinavian Star were never fully cleared.

The story regularly features in the media in all the Nordic countries, whenever new information that could help solve the mystery emerges. Survivors and relatives of victims have recently asked for a pan-Scandinavian commission to be set up to investigate the matter fully. Former Norwegian police attorney Nicolai Bjønness, who conducted the original criminal investi-gation and fire specialist Kjell Schmidt Pedersen, who headed the fire investigation team, support this request, in view of the fact that the case was never solved and that new information, which seriously undermines the official explanation, has come to light. The authorities of Norway, Denmark and Sweden have so far refused to reopen the case.

T H E AU T H O RLars Halskov, 49, is an author and journalist. Since 1996 he has worked for Politiken, Denmark’s largest newspaper, where he has focused on investigative and narrative journalism. He covered the mystery of the arson aboard the Scandinavian Star for the paper. Lars Halskov is the author of three critically acclaimed documentary titles: Condemned Spring – The War in Kosovo (2000) together with Kim Faber, The Ship that Disappeared (2009) with Morten Halskov and A Country at War (2012), with Jacob Svendsen.

A B O U T T H E B O O KThe impressive benefits of eating less just two days a week has taken the world by storm. Danish nutritional therapist Louise Bruun and Birdie Bjerregaard has several years’ experience of working with the 5:2 diet, which is based on the simple principle of eating normally 5 days a week and fasting for 2 non-consecutive days. Fasting involves limiting your calorie intake – 600 calories per day for men and 500 calories for women. In this book, Bruun and consultant Birdie Bjerregaard offer concrete advice and a host of delicious recipes to help you get started with a diet that will make you slimmer, healthier and fitter.

The book provides an uncomplicated intro-duction to the principles behind the diet and follows four people as they try out the 5:2 approach. The participants undergo a series of tests that reveal how their health improves week by week. The effect of the 5:2 diet is astounding. It will help you shed all those unwanted pounds and never put them on again. T H E WORLD’S BEST DI ET 2 This time, Christian Bitz and Arne Astrup have made a book for those who are dieting on their own. The scien-tific basis for the book is still Diogenes, the most extensive research study on diet and weight loss ever conducted. The recipes, which are all measured in portions for just one person, are even simpler. VBK 2.0 guarantees a weight loss of 1-2 kilos (2,2-4,4lbs) per week with a 4-week meal plan. After the initial weight loss, the reader is guided onwards with the more than 80 easy recipes designed to inspire healthier eating and living, which is the foundation of a change of lifestyle. And a lifestyle change is essential to enduring weight loss. Sometimes it takes that little bit extra to reach your ideal weight, but Bitz and Astrup highlight seven ‘slimming sins’ to look out for. The book presents seven formerly overweight people, who have each

conquered their ‘slimming sin’ that had tripped them up in their quest to lose weight for years. They tell of their success with following the dietary rules and the reader gets con-crete advice and knowledge that, once and for all, dispel any excuse for not becoming and staying slim.

JOHAN BÜLOWCOOKING WITH LIQUORICE

A B O U T T H E B O O KLiquorice, delicious, soft liquorice, has become immensely popular almost overnight, and it obviously tastes great straight out of the package. But liquorice also has unexpected potential as a flavouring in food, and this has quickly become one of the hottest trends in cooking, both among chefs and amateurs. In Cooking with Liquorice, Johan Bülow, the man behind the black quality liquorice that bears his name, reveals the world of indulgence hidden inside the rough and stringy liquorice root, from which liquorice is made – and he explains why liquorice deserves a place in next to pepper and saffron in our spice cupboard. Cooking with Liquorice contains

72 hands-on suggestions on how you can use liquorice in all its forms - liquorice powder, liquorice syrup, liquorice oil and normal liquorice - in both sweet and savoury dishes, without it getting complicated.

T H E AU T H O RJohan Bülow is the director, founder and gastronome of his own company, Lakrids by Bülow, a young, fast-growing Danish enterprise, which has made its mark on the Danish market and already exports to countries like Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany and the Netherlands. In Denmark the company’s product can be found in specialty stores – wine shops, design stores and selected hotels – in short, wherever content and design are held in high esteem. Lakrids by Bülow also operates four brand stores in Denmark. In London, Lakrids by Bülow graces the confectionary department of illustrious Harvey Nichols and in New York all products can be found at Chelsea Market.

A B O U T T H E B O O KNordic cuisine has created an interest in cooking with ingredients found in nature. More people than ever go hunting and never before have so many of the hunters been women. But how is the game that you’ve proudly brought down yourself or bought from the supermarket best prepared and cooked? Serving Up Game gives you expert advice. Its 75 recipes cover all types of game, such as red deer, hare, boar, pheasant, wood pigeon, woodcock and wild duck, to mention only a few. And it’s not just recipes for fancy dinner parties, Serving Up Game also helps you with ordinary everyday dinners and provides instructions on how to use every part of the animal in your cooking. Take, for example, the pheasant, that will make three whole meals. The emphasis is not on classical dishes, but on reinterpreted and modern versions with delicious side dishes that complement the strong, deep flavour of the game. Finely honed gastronomic skills are not necessary to enjoy the book as much thought and effort has gone into making the cooking experience simple and straightfor-ward. Comprehensive instructions are provided as well as information about hunting seasons for each kind of game. The beautiful pictures are the work of one of Denmark’s most prominent food photographers, Columbus Leth. He has just received the Danish Gastronomical Academy’s honorary award for his efforts to promote gastronomy.

ABOU T THE BOOK Little Allan is home alone and that is scary. When he looks out the window it’s as if there’s someone there, behind the bushes, staring straight at him. And out in the square there’s a spot-less and fairly long, black car of the sort that would normally never park in his part of town.

A while later Little Allan is at the hot-dog stand to buy some chips. “D’you want salt on your taters?” a man with long, thin hands asks him. “Yes, please”, Little Allan replies, picking one up and dunking it in mayo. And then everything goes black.

When he opens his eyes, four boys are sitting over him. ey look like him, all four of them. Little Allan is at the doppelganger school in Næstved.
