AcknowledgementsThe creation of this manual was made possible because of the spiritual gifts, time and talent of many people. Their help and participation served as a witness to a message included in the Year of Faith Pastoral Letter written by Most Reverend Richard G. Lennon:

“As members of the Church we are obliged to witness to our faith. Each one of us is sent into the world to joyfully witness to God’s love and our relationship with Jesus Christ.”

How to Use the Leader’s GuideIntroductionIn Spring 2015 the Offices of Evangelization and Stewardship launched Joyfully Gifted, a spiritual gifts discernment process developed for use in the Diocese of Cleveland for adults and youth in grades 8-12.

In a very short time, several youth ministers in the diocese expressed a desire to redevelop the materials with more age appropriate activities and media options for those in grades 8-12. In partnership with the Offices of Evangelization, Stewardship, and the Youth and Young Adult Ministries Office, a team of lay leaders has been meeting since that time to offer what is now in hand: Joyfully Gifted Resources for Youth Ministry Leader Guide.

The recommended format for the Joyfully Gifted spiritual gift discernment process is a retreat, prayerful personal discernment and a series of group follow-up sessions.

At the retreat, participants will learn what a spiritual gift is, use a questionnaire to begin discovering their charisms and be engaged in activities with their peers to learn how to begin using their similar and differing gifts with others in order to build the kingdom of God at home, school, work, church and in the wider community.

This Leader Guide will provide the recommended resources necessary to begin a Joyfully Gifted process including:

Catechesis and Formation Retreat PowerPointSample Retreat Formats Activity InstructionsGroup Follow-up Meeting Instructions

Additional resources and the electronic version of this Leader Guide and all supporting documents can be found at http://www.dioceseofcleveland.org/evangelization/joyfully-gifted-ym/.

These materials were developed for use with emphasis on offering a foundation for helping to form youth in the discovery of their spiritual gifts which hopefully will begin to provide a deeper understanding for further prayerful discernment of what God is calling them to.

These resources are being offered to parish youth ministry teams to provide adaptable and flexible choices for spiritual gift discovery and discernment for youth so they may go forth to glorify the Lord by their lives.

Catechetical and Formation ResourcesPrayer to the Holy Spirit

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithfuland kindle in themthe fire of your love.Send forth your Spiritand they shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth.

O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spiritwe may be truly wiseand ever enjoy His consolations, through Christ Our Lord, Amen.

From Scripture (1Timothy 4:12-14)

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.”

Quote from Pope Benedict XVI (25 April 2005 Address to the German Pilgrims)

“This is why young people are - you are - once again fully open to Christ. Christ did not promise an easy life. Those who desire comforts have dialed the wrong number. Rather, he shows us the way to great things, the good, towards an authentic human life.”

Quotes from Pope Francis (Joy of the Gospel, 130-131)

“The Holy Spirit also enriches the entire evangelizing church with different charisms. These gifts are meant to renew and build up the church.”

“They (charisms) are not an inheritance, safely secured and entrusted to a small group for safekeeping, rather they are gifts of the Spirit integrated into the body of the Church, drawn to the center which is Christ and then channeled into an evangelizing impulse…The Holy Spirit also enriches the entire evangelizing church with different charisms. These gifts are meant to renew and build up the church.”

Charism Basics (Catechism of the Catholic Church)• A charism is a spiritual gift, given by God to each at Baptism and strengthened by the Sacraments.• Each person has at least one, some have more.• Charisms are used to serve God and are used for others.• Charisms have natural and supernatural characteristics, for the giver and the receiver.

Recognizing Charisms• An unmistakable inner experience of peace, energy, joy and satisfaction• There is evidence of its fruitfulness (unusually effective and successful results)• Affirmation received from others

Discerning CharismsCharisms are instruments of evangelization that reveal Jesus to others and render his presence known. In using one’s charisms a person becomes an instrument, an agent of God’s purpose in this world, channels of his love, truth, and healing provisions specifically given to be used for others.

While use of charisms provides fruitfulness in the lives of other people, they also represent a call for the user. Spiritual gifts are not hobbies, but clues for how God is calling one personally.

Discernment can provide a major clue as to one’s vocation, with charisms serving as tools given to accomplish each person’s unique mission for God. A prayerful discernment process enables a person to use the gifts given to them by God in Baptism in order to help build the Church.

Understanding Charisms: Understanding the ways of God and humanity Discernment, Knowledge, Wisdom

Excerpts from Catechism of the Catholic Church To assist in a basic study on charisms the following excerpts from the Catechism of the Catholic Church are provided:

THE CHURCH – BODY OF CHRIST791 The body’s unity does not do away with the diversity of its members: “In the building up of Christ’s Body there is engaged a diversity of members and functions. There is only one Spirit who, according to his own richness and the needs of the ministries, gives his different gifts for the welfare of the Church.”222 The unity of the Mystical Body produces and stimulates charity among the faithful: “From this it follows that if one member suffers anything, all the members suffer with him, and if one member is honored, all the members together rejoice.”223 Finally, the unity of the Mystical Body triumphs over all human divisions: “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”224 (814, 1937)

THE CHURCH IS THE TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT798 The Holy Spirit is “the principle of every vital and truly saving action in each part of the Body.”247 He works in many ways to build up the whole Body in charity:248 by God’s Word “which is able to build you up”;249 by Baptism, through which he forms Christ’s Body;250 by the sacraments, which give growth and healing to Christ’s members; by “the grace of the apostles, which holds first place among his gifts”;251 by the virtues, which make us act according to what is good; finally, by the many special graces (called “charisms”), by which he makes the faithful “fit and ready to undertake various tasks and offices for the renewal and building up of the Church.”252 (737, 1091-1109, 791)

CHARISMS799 Whether extraordinary or simple and humble, charisms are graces of the Holy Spirit which directly or indirectly benefit the Church, ordered as they are to her building up, to the good of men, and to the needs of the world. (951, 2003)

800 Charisms are to be accepted with gratitude by the person who receives them and by all members of the Church as well. They are a wonderfully rich grace for the apostolic vitality and for the holiness of the entire Body of Christ, provided they really are genuine gifts of the Holy Spirit and are used in full conformity with authentic promptings of this same Spirit, that is, in keeping with charity, the true measure of all charisms.253

801 It is in this sense that discernment of charisms is always necessary. No charism is exempt from being referred and submitted to the Church’s shepherds. “Their office [is] not indeed to extinguish the Spirit, but to test all things and hold fast to what is good,”254 so that all the diverse and complementary charisms work together “for the common good.”255 (894,1905)

COMMUNION IN SPIRITUAL GOODS951 Communion of charisms. Within the communion of the Church, the Holy Spirit “distributes special graces among the faithful of every rank” for the building up of the Church.484 Now, “to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for

Page 9: Joyfully Gifted - Roman Catholic Diocese of Cleveland · Joyfully Gifted Joyfully Gifted Resources for Youth Ministry Leader Guide ... God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did

page 9www.dioceseofcleveland.org/evangelization/joyfully-gifted-ym/

the common good.”485(799)

952 “They had everything in common.”486 “Everything the true Christian has is to be regarded as a good possessed in common with everyone else. All Christians should be ready and eager to come to the help of the needy... and of their neighbors in want.”487 A Christian is a steward of the Lord’s goods.488 (2402)

GRACE2003 Grace is first and foremost the gift of the Spirit who justifies and sanctifies us. But grace also includes the gifts that the Spirit grants us to associate us with his work, to enable us to collaborate in the salvation of others and in the growth of the Body of Christ, the Church. There are sacramental graces, gifts proper to the different sacraments. There are furthermore special graces, also called charisms after the Greek term used by St. Paul and meaning “favor,” “gratuitous gift,” “benefit.”53 Whatever their character—sometimes it is extraordinary, such as the gift of miracles or of tongues—charisms are oriented toward sanctifying grace and are intended for the common good of the Church. They are at the service of charity which builds up the Church.54 (1108, 1127, 799-801)

2004 Among the special graces ought to be mentioned the graces of state that accompany the exercise of the responsibilities of the Christian life and of the ministries within the Church:

Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching; he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who gives aid, with zeal; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.55

2005 Since it belongs to the supernatural order, grace escapes our experience and cannot be known except by faith. We cannot therefore rely on our feelings or our works to conclude that we are justified and saved.56 However, according to the Lord’s words — “Thus you will know them by their fruits”57— reflection on God’s blessings in our life and in the lives of the saints offers us a guarantee that grace is at work in us and spurs us on to an ever greater faith and an attitude of trustful poverty.A pleasing illustration of this attitude is found in the reply of St. Joan of Arc to a question posed as a trap by her ecclesiastical judges: “Asked if she knew that she was in God’s grace, she replied: ‘If I am not, may it please God to put me in it; if I am, may it please God to keep me there.’”58

Excerpts on Spiritual Gifts from St. Paul1 CORINTHIANS 12

Concerning Spiritual Gifts12 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy

Spirit.

4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b]11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

Unity and Diversity in the Body12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by[c] one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.

15 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body.16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body.17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty,24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it,25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.

27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues[d]? Do all interpret? 31 Now eagerly desire the greater gifts.

Love Is IndispensableAnd yet I will show you the most excellent way.Footnotes: a. 1 Corinthians 12:10 Or languages; also in verse 28 b. 1 Corinthians 12:10 Or languages; also in verse 28 c. 1 Corinthians 12:13 Or with; or in d. 1 Corinthians 12:30 Or other languages

ROMANS 12:1-8

A Living Sacrifice12 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing

to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.Humble Service in the Body of Christ3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your[a]faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,[b] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Love in Action9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.Footnotes: a. Romans 12:6 Or the b. Romans 12:8 Or to provide for others

HEBREWS 2:2-4

Warning to Pay Attention2 We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2 For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, 3 how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. 4 God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

Joyfully Gifted Vision“The Holy Spirit also enriches the entire

evangelizing church with different charisms.

These gifts are meant to renew and build up the church.”

Pope Francis, Joy of the Gospel, 130

What is a Charism?• The definition of charism is a spiritual gift, given by

God to each at Baptism and strengthened by the Sacraments.

• Each person has at least one, some have more.• Charisms are used to serve God and are used for

others• Charisms have supernatural characteristics, for the

giver and the receiver.

Spiritual Gifts“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the

same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.”

1 Corinthians 12:4-7

Recognizing Charisms• Yearning: I am naturally drawn to...• Rapid Learning: I pick up these kinds of activities quickly• "Flow": I "get" the steps of these kinds of activities almost

automatically• Glimpses of Excellence: I sometimes wonder, "How did I do

that?" when I...• Satisfaction: In some activities I never seem to tire, and am anxious

to do them again• Losing Time: When I am doing this, I lose all sense of time because

I’m so into what I’m doing… not bored or distracted

.”

Summarize purpose of sessions• A way to learn more about my spiritual identity and what God is calling me to do with my life.

Revisit the definition of spiritual gifts • The definition of charism is a spiritual gift, given by God to each at Baptism and strengthened by the

Sacraments. • Each person has at least one, some have more. • Charisms are used to serve God and are used for others. • Charisms have supernatural characteristics, for the giver and the receiver.

Page 30: Joyfully Gifted - Roman Catholic Diocese of Cleveland · Joyfully Gifted Joyfully Gifted Resources for Youth Ministry Leader Guide ... God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did

Discussion and/or Activity

Weekly Challenge

Closing Prayer• Invite a participant to lead spontaneous prayer, or lead the prayer yourself if no one volunteers.• Ask for intercession of Saints important to your community.• End with a Hail Mary asking for the intercession of Mary, Star of Evangelization.

SESSION ONE: MY IDENTITY

Witness• Preselect a witness to share how they identified and have meaningfully used one of their spiritual gifts.

Discussion: • Which spiritual gift do you most want to share? • Share a story about a time when you have used one of your charisms.• How did you feel?• What did you notice about how others around you responded?• How have you drawn closer to Christ by using your spiritual gifts?

Weekly Challenge: • Ask the Holy Spirit to help you identify your charisms and when to use them.• Use one of your charisms this week and pay attention to how you and the people around you are reacting.

How do you see yourself as an instrument of God in that moment?

SESSION TWO: MY CALLING

Witness: • Preselect a witness to share how knowing their charisms helped them to discover their calling and how it

fulfilled them.

Discussion:• Last week we challenged you to pray to the Holy Spirit to help you identify your charisms and to use one of

your spiritual gifts. • Share what happened.• How did you feel?• How did those around you respond?• How did you see yourself as an instrument of God in that moment?• Are you feeling more confident in using your spiritual gifts now? • If so, how?

Page 31: Joyfully Gifted - Roman Catholic Diocese of Cleveland · Joyfully Gifted Joyfully Gifted Resources for Youth Ministry Leader Guide ... God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did

page 31www.dioceseofcleveland.org/evangelization/joyfully-gifted-ym/

• If not, why do you think that is?

For leaders: It is possible that the participants are fearful to use their gifts. Give them whatever support you can to encourage them. It is also possible the participants may have misidentified their spiritual gifts. Encourage individuals to revisit the inventory at home if you think it is the possibility, and affirm the spiritual gifts you see in them.

• What are you passionate about?• How does that intersect with your spiritual gifts?• How might God be calling you to use your charisms on a daily basis?• How can you use your giftedness to serve the Church and to build up the Body of Christ?• Based on the gifts you have right now, where do you think God is calling you?

Weekly Challenge: • Ask the Holy Spirit to continue to help you identify your charisms and when to use them. Pray about

where God is calling you.• Go use a different charism than the one you used last week and pay attention to how you and the people

around you are responding. • How do you see God calling you?

SESSION THREE: MY GOALS

Witness • Preselect a witness to share how they have lived their charisms in the world to build up the kingdom of

God.

Discussion• Last week we challenged you to pray to the Holy Spirit to help you identify your charisms and to use

another one of your spiritual gifts. • Share what happened.• How did you feel?• How did those around you respond?• How did you see God calling you? • How are you using your gifts to proclaim the Gospel?• When you are on social media, or hear of events happening, what is the topic that makes you say, "Someone

should do something about that!"• How can you address that need using one of your spiritual gifts?

Activity• Meditation: Play video of Matthew West's song, "Do Something"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_RjndG0IX8• Have participants quietly reflect on what they feel they may be called to do. • Ask them to write down three things they feel God may be calling them to do with their charisms.• Ask them to write down three nuggets of wisdom they will be taking away from these sessions.

• The first person (the one whose birthday is closest to today) will start sharing their story. When finished telling their story they will say “Amen.”

• All others in the group will participate by actively listening – no talking and no cross talk or questions.

• Once the first person says “Amen”, the other persons in the group acknowledge completion of the story and they say together “Amen”.

• With no talk or cross talk the person to the right of the first person begins sharing their story. When finished, the second person says “Amen” and the rest of the people in the group acknowledge the completion of the story by saying together “Amen.”

there can be some physical space between each group. Have the small group form a circle. • Ask the pre-assigned retreat team members, acting as small group leaders, to join one of the small groups.• Once all are situated ask for quiet and start the process with the following prayer :

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit; Lord, we ask you to be with us today. Holy Spirit, help us to feel safe here and to be open and vulnerable with each other. Give us the words to pray. In a special way, we invite our guardian angels to join in our discussion and pray they can help us listen and share with your grace. Amen.

• Continue with the following direction to participants:

• In each of your small groups each participant will take turns reading their letters of introduction.• As soon as the participant has completed reading, the person will sit or stand in the center of the

small group. • For those who did not read, they will extend a hand to them (on their shoulder, arm, back, etc.) or

over them and pray separate prayers out loud at the same time for this person. • Encouraging everyone to join in prayer, the retreat team member will end with:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen.

• Continue allowing each participant to read their letter and be prayed over until all have had a turn.

seal and turn them into the small group leader. • Collect letters and give to Youth Minister or Retreat Organizer.

LEADER• Begin this activity by explaining:

• All gifts are needed for the wholeness and holiness of the Body of Christ. All charisms should be treated as equal as they are equal in God’s eyes and are each used to serve others as God wills.

• Ask the participants to gather in small groups (no more than 8 per group).• Ask each group to choose one person to be the recorder for the group and give this person a piece of

paper and a pen.• Once all are settled into groups, give the following directions:

• Let the participants know that they will be asked to participate in planning an event which is _________________ (name prechosen event).

• Explain that very often in group settings we are asked to “Brain” storm for what to do for the event. But today we are going to do something different. We will be “Spirit” storming.

• Ask each participant to assist in the planning of the chosen event by “Spirit” storming using the following format:

“Because I have the spiritual gift of ____________________, I would suggest we do this for the event: __________________________.”

PARTICIPANT WORK Allow approximately 15 – 20 minutes for participants to share their ideas in the small group.

LEADER• Ask each of the recorders from the small groups to share some of the ideas they have written with the

large group. Affirm all answers.• When all have had a chance to share, read the following passage from St. Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians:

• 1 Corinthians 12:4-11There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to an-other miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
