Going Places

What isGOING PLACES?Recognizing the current development trends as well as the challenges faced by our Region, the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission began a 4-year planning process to provide solutions and alternatives for how individuals, communities, and businesses can work together to shape a positive future for the Region. The overview of this three-phase approach is as follows:

Phase I • (July 2007-December 2008) Existing Condition Assessment: Physical and Non-Physical Condition Evaluation

Phase II• (January 2009-December 2010) Future Landscapes Exploration: Future Land Use Scenario Development and Assessment

Phase III• (January 2011-June 2011) Building a Clear and Shared Regional Land Use Framework

The conceptual Region-Based Growth Framework that will be developed as a result of Going Places will serve as a resource and guideline as the Region attempts to move forward and prepare for a better future. However, this process will only be effective if concerned citizens like you become involved. The future of the Region depends on its citizens and local jurisdictions participating and providing input. These questions represent just a few of the practical implications of continuing recent trends—suburbanization of people and jobs and low-density development patterns—that residents of the Miami Valley Region should be con-cerned about.

Over the past several decades, the amount of land being developed has outpaced the amount of population growth. As a result, the Region has been experiencing population density decline over time. What will be the consequences if these trends continue as we head into the coming decades? The figure below represents what could happen in the Region by 2030 if current trends continue.

The following questions address some of the most important reasons why you should become involved in shaping the future of the Miami Valley Region:

1970 2000 2030

How far are you willing to drive to work, school, the grocery store, or a restaurant?

How much are you willing to pay for utilities and services such as water, electricity, sewer, roads,

maintenance, schools, police, and EMS?

How much more of the Region’s open space, parks, and agricultural areas are you willing to forfeit to development?

What are some possible consequences if population density trends continue?

What are we doing as a Region to better prepare for our future and is it enough?

Will the Miami Valley Region Maintain a High Quality of Life? The residents of the Miami Valley Region deserve to enjoy a high quality of life for many years to come. But if the current trend of declining population density continues, the tax base will be spread thinner as a result, making it more challenging for local governments to provide services and amenities to their residents. Going Places will identify ways that communi-ties can develop to allow them to maintain a high quality of life for residents.

Will the Miami Valley Region Sustain a Sense of Place? A sense of place begins with the physical places that are important to a region. The Miami Valley Region is composed of diverse communities which contain many unique places that are vital to creating a regional sense of place. By raising awareness of the need for planning and cooperation, Going Places will help the communities of the Region continue to create and maintain great places.

Will the Miami Valley Region Stay Competitive in the Global Marketplace? In order for the Miami Valley Region to compete in the global marketplace, communities in the Region need to work together so that the Region becomes a place that attracts people, businesses, and jobs. This collaboration must include individual citizens as well as government and businesses. Going Places is an initiative intended to bring these groups together so that the Region can stay globally competitive.
