SUSTAINABLE WATERPROOFING FOR BRIDGES

DeckProof.

4. Sustainable waterproofing for bridgesA sustainable waterproofing system should consist of a number of compatible and verified

products that together forms the waterproofing system. It shall be intimate documented how

each product is installed in connection to different details, what equipment to be used and what

preparation is needed for best possible durability.

8. DeckProof Waterproofing system-Basic requirement and pre-treatment

Before primering the concrete surface it is important to have pre-treated the concrete according

to the manufacturers rtecommendation. There are several methods of controlling the surface,

sand patch method is one.

9. DeckProof Waterproofing system-Primering

We are recommending our DeckProof C Epoxy Primer, applied in one- or two layers,

alternatively our bitumen based primer, DeckProof B Primer, as primering system.

10.DeckProof Waterproofing system-Waterproofing

Installation of waterproofing is carried out by torching one or two layer of membrane.

Longitudinal joints with an overlaps of 80 mm and transversal overlaps with 120. Transversal

joints should be displaced at least one metre in relation to transversal joints in adjacent lengths.

Application always in direction of traffic.

DeckProof C5 waterprofing membrane

DeckProof fullfills the most stringent bridge standards like the Swedish, Danish, German,

Polish, Lithuanian, Latvian etc.

11.DeckProof Bridge Deck Waterproofing SystemOn this split section it is shown different products included in our waterproofing system.

Different primer system on horizontal and vertical concrete surfaces. DeckProof waterproofing

membrane, DeckProof Joint Sealant. DeckProof waterproofing system can be combined with

Gussasphalt/Mastic asphalt or asphalt concrete.

12.The No. 1 waterproofing system !A very common system today in many markets are the combination of:

1.DeckProof C Epoxy Primer

2.DeckProof C5, one layer waterproofing membrane

3.Polymer modified mastic asphalt

13.The resund Fixed LinkHere is one famous reference where the explained The No. 1 waterproofing system! have

successfully been used.

The resund Fixed Link between Denmark and Sweden includes two connecting bridges ( 3739

and 3014 metres long respectively ) and a 1092 metres long high-level bridge with a span of 490

metres. DeckProof membrane on the roadway covers an area of more than 200 000 m.

DeckProof waterproofing has also been used on the abutments and viaducts on the approach

roads.

15.Transflex expansion joint systemThis is one of the expansion joint system that is produced within the Trelleborg Group.

16.Transflex Expansion Joint System-Expansion Joint System

This is a top installed expansion joint system. The prefabricated Transflex is installed on a

bedding mortar and a mechanically secured to the concrete. In combination with transition

mortar, joint sealant and drainage the Transflex is installed.

Prefabricated kerb units are available according to the demands in the actual project.

17. DeckProof Flexjoint SystemThis is an on-site built up asphalt plug joint system.

18.DeckProof FlexJoint I.M.P.-Expansion Joint System

Here we can see a cross section of the Flexjoint, in this case including DeckProof compression

seal.

All included epoxy rimers shown on this picture and on the other ones included in this

presentation are available from our company.

19.Elastomeric BearingsIn the Trelleborg Group we are producing bearings as well, and they are a part in our DeckProof

System. On this slide you can see the different types of bearings available.

20.DeckProof Bridge modelA sustainable waterproofing system can be looking like this. I have today just talked about the

most common bridge construction, concrete bridges. We have also products, systems and

recommendations for steel- and wood bridges.

By this picture would I like to thank all of you for participating in this presentation.

21.The endSustainable waterproofing for bridges

Waterproofing! The word waterproofing means to most people within the civil engineering field, a

layer or a membrane that prevents water to penetrate through a certain construction or structure.

This is correct, by means of general terms. In the CEN works, waterproofing is defined as

action to prevent the passage of water from one plane to another

[TC 254 WI 00254087:2002 (E)].

Even more specific, the definition of concrete bridge deck waterproofing according to CEN works

is: assembly of layers between the concrete bridge deck (or other concrete surface trafficable by

vehicles) and overlay; generally it comprises the primer, the reinforced bitumen sheet (or the

assembly of several reinforced bitumen sheets) and the protection layer if specified by the

manufacturer.

A sustainable waterproofing system should consist of a number of compatible and verified products

that together forms the waterproofing system. It shall be intimate documented how each product is

installed in connection to different details, what equipment to be used and what preparation is

needed for best possible durability.

By having the knowledge of different factors that have an effect on each component in the

waterproofing system, e.g. levelling compound, primer system etc, the system can be optimised for

the existing conditions.
