  • In addition to the sensors, on-board repeaters communicated data via a ship/shore fibre optic link or radio telemetry that also accommodates emergency shut down protocols and telephone communication.

Other repeaters are also available and include tablet PCs, PDAs and pagers. PDAs and pagers can be certified for use in hazardous areas.

The system can be configured as a basic array or designed as a total system for a new facility.

Strainstall are also able to retrofit or upgrade existing systems, and it is this flexible yet integrated approach that provides unique solutions wherever the critical functions of jetty monitoring and management are required.

During the critical approach phase you need complete information; speed of approach, distance to jetty and environmental parameters. Once alongside, the total jetty monitoring and management system really comes into its own. Sensors monitor mooring loads, wind speed, wind direction, oceanographic parameters and drift-off.

All these functions are integrated into a PC based control room display system, which provides graphic representation of all critical data, data logging and a system printer for hands on information.

bespoke systemsBased on over 45 years of experience in load and force measurement, the Strainstall total jetty

monitoring and management system is designed to assist the mooring master during a vessels

approach to, and whilst moored at the jetty.

  • Strainstalls DockAlert system provides protection of the jetty infrastructure by measuring the distance and

calculating the vessel approach speed to ensure that it is kept within the allowable limits for the jettys

    safe operation.

Additionally, Strainstall can also supply a portable GPS system that is carried on-board by the pilot. It comes in a lightweight waterproof case that is placed on the bridge wing, with its two antennas attached to the vessels railings by either magnetic mount or spring clamp.

Data is passed wirelessly to the display laptop, which the pilot can place in any convenient position.

    expertise

Jetty-Based Laser System The system uses two eye-safe laser units installed on either side of the jetty head and aimed perpendicular to the berthing line. These measure the distance of the bow and stern relative to the jetty, while also providing speed and angle of the vessel to the berth.

The data from these lasers is fed to a central control system, where it can be displayed in the jetty control room and relayed to either hand held telemetry units (i.e. pagers and/or PDAs) or a large digit display mounted on the jetty.

The large digit display is visible from over 200m and provides the pilot and vessel master with data on the speed of approach and distance from the jetty.

Incorporated into the display are arrows indicating whether the vessels speed is increasing or decreasing using simple traffic light indicators to warn of excessive speed. These can be set against pre-determined safe parameters to ensure smooth and gentle berthing.

Once the vessel is safely moored the system will also monitor any

  • Strainstall has been designing and manufacturing these load measuring pins for over 45 years, and the design utilises the unique experience gained over this period to provide a reliable and totally environmentally sealed unit that will perform unhindered over the life of the installation.

The signals from the load pins, together with the hook status sensors (open or closed), are consolidated by a network interface unit mounted in the hook motor starter enclosure, situated at the rear of the hook base. This unit

Strainstalls MoorAlert mooring load monitoring system provides an accurate indication of mooring loads in multi-line mooring configurations. These loads are measured and monitored in real-time by strain gauged load measuring pins installed in the quick release hooks.

This enables each mooring line to be pre-tensioned to acceptable values of load. The strain gauges detect any deviation from these defined values and provide the data that will protect the performance of that line.

The forces generated by a vessel on the mooring lines due to wind, tide, surge and currents can become

extremely high, resulting in progressive failure of the mooring lines and potential damage to the loading

arms, access gangways and jetty infrastructure.

    Mooring Load Monitoring

allows the digital signals from all the hooks to be transmitted over a simple two wire network back to the jetty control room.

  • proven designQuick release hooks form the basis of any safe mooring system and enable a vessel to be securely moored

alongside a jetty, but with the facility to quickly and safely release the mooring lines, even when they are

    at full tension.

    Quick Release Mooring Hooks

The Strainstall quick release mooring hooks are based on the respected Stevens Design and are unique as they have been designed to provide full mechanical protection to the release mechanisms and incorporate load monitoring. They have also been upgraded in material selection and manufacture to provide safe and reliable operation in the environments encountered on jetties.

A unit usually comprises of single, double, triple or quadruple hooks as required by the layout of the

mechanism tested at full load rating at our own test facility, witnessed by a surveyor from an independent Classification Society. They are also supplied with material certification and

Local displays of the mooring load tensions and audible and visual alarms can also be incorporated into the hook. In addition, when the hooks are equipped with mooring load monitoring, an in-hook load cell calibration facility is provided, eliminating the need for separate and costly testing of the system.

terminal, although other configurations can be supplied.

In addition to the standard local manual hook release, Strainstall offer electric, hydraulic and pneumatic remote release systems, with the activation devices totally integrated into the hook assembly. This allows

as an option of activating a button on the motor starter enclosure on the rear of the hook.

  • Strainstalls jetty management technology is the world leader in terms of

flexibility and functionality in use. The package integrates a number of

sub-systems to provide complete docking, mooring and environmental data.

    integrated systems

Advanced information and data logging capability provides real-time analysis of load, drift-off and environmental conditions to ensure safe and accurate vessel approach and optimum mooring line performance, whatever the stresses and weather conditions.

Sensors installed around the jetty provide the data that is then processed and presented on a control room display to provide graphical representations of all critical data.

An alarm facility and data recording provides a full backup system that

allows the user to review any berthing or mooring sequence to ensure that optimal usage of the berth is maintained. In the event of a heavy berthing or an unexpected ESD departure, the system allows the operator to relay the sequence of events leading up to and during the unforeseen incident, identifying the exact cause.

Strainstall is able to relay this information via telemetry to pager, PDA or laptops operators who are not located in the central control room to provide additional flexibility and monitoring.

  • The integrated approach to jetty monitoring and management

    total jetty managementControl Room Display

The control room display is the essential heart of the system. PC based and fibre optic linked, a series of well designed graphic screens are displayed and essential data is logged to the system for instant recall in the event of incident management.

    Approach Sensors

Strainstall sensors are critical components of the system. The approach sensors are jetty mounted, and most importantly, they are suitable for use in hazardous areas. The sensors compute the distance from the time a transmitted laser pulse takes to be reflected back to the unit from the approaching vessel. This measurement is the basis for determining the distance from the jetty. On board GPS units are also available.

    On-Board Repeater

A PC designed to provide the vessels crew with replicas of the control room screens and alarms. The jetty layout software is stored on the on-board repeater and the real-time data is transmitted from the control room PC via a fibre optic or radio telemetry communication system. In the event of any alarms occurring in mooring load, environmental and/or drift off, the crew would be warned instantly, as well as the control room personnel. The crew can accept the alarms on the vessel, but this will not silence the alarms in the control room.

    On-Board Repeater

The environmental parameters are monitored by a number of sensors that determine wind speed and direction, tidal currents, wave heights, temperature range, etc. This data is vital in controlling the vessels approach to the jetty and its position when moored.

    Drift-off Monitor

Having secured the vessel on the jetty, the approach monitor sensors are used to monitor any drift-off by the vessel and provide alarms if the pre-set limits are exceeded. This facility is used to ensure the loading arms are not overloaded and consequently damaged.

    Ship/Shore Fibre OpticCommunication

The system consists of two sub-systems, one on the jetty and one on the vessel. It provides a link between the jetty and the vessel, allowing safe, high-speed communication of data (emergency shutdown, mooring data and telephone) through hazardous areas.

    Jetty Repeaters

Tablet Pcs, PDAs and pagers are also available. The PDAs and pagers can be certified for use in hazardous areas.
